Top 5 non traditional romance heros (whatever that means to you)
Rahul from The Roommate Risk by Talia Hibbert: Okay this one is personal to me and less so the romance genre (but maybe it applies to the genre as well?) but South Asian men who are daddy?? I was taken aback by that because Talia does a good job of selling Rahul as this (and Zafir from Take a Hint, Dani Brown to an extent but not as hard as Rahul goes), while the prevailing stereotype irl (and in my experience) is that they're mostly mummy's boys. Take that as you will.
Beau from Mercy by Sara Cate: Not only is he a hero who is younger than the heroine and submissive, but his redemption arc from dbag ex-boyfriend to (mostly) stand-up guy who is a good boyfriend and reconciles with his ex is actually pretty impressive and rare as far as redemption arcs (and a well done one at that) go.
Kit from Duke the Halls by Felicity Niven: So many romance novel heroes are preternaturally gifted in the sack even with minimal experience, but it takes a brave man to realize he's not that great at sex specifically because he never focused on his partner's pleasure, and admit it. Out loud. Luckily Franny is willing to give him lessons, in the spirit of the season yk.
Wes from What Was Meant To Be by Heather Guerre: You expect certain things from small town romance heroes but Wes is an gruff all-American-type who also likes to be dominated (he's such a Good Boy), and as far as the subgenre goes, that's pretty unique imo
Michael from The Kiss Quotient Helen Hoang: Heroes who are sex workers are pretty rare, at least among the books I've read (as opposed to heroines who are sex workers, and I feel like sex worker heroes in historical romances are no longer sex workers by the time the story starts; often they've "risen up" and have no need to do so anymore), so the fact that Michael is still escorting and it's treated with minimal judgement by the plot (as far as I remember) felt like such a novelty to me when I read this a couple years ago.

'Hot Blooded' (Tooth & Claw #2) - Heather Guerre
Tumblr media
Desperate times call for desperate measures…
Saddled with insurmountable debt, Tessa is desperate for a way out. When she’s referred to an agency that pairs vampires with blood donors as a quick way to make some cash, she has no choice but to accept an arrangement. She expects pain. She expects fear. She expects a predator. But what she gets is something entirely different. Her vampire match is... sweet. Kind. Protective. And the way he makes her feel is anything but painful.
Can the ends justify the means…?
Amos has long since given up on the idea of ever finding a blood mate. Accepting that the only live blood he’ll ever enjoy will be from paid donors, he finally gives in and enlists a blood-matching service. But when he finally meets his match, she’s everything he could have asked for in a mate—kind, funny, beautiful. He knows right away that he wants her for keeps, but it’s a huge leap from temporary donor to eternal blood mate. If Amos is going to keep Tessa forever, he’ll have to win her heart first.
Predatory hunger sharpened to a piercing ache in his fangs. “Ah, Tessa, you make it so hard to be a gentleman,” he growled.
Her gaze dipped briefly to his lap and the obvious bulge beneath his jeans, a dangerous smile curling one corner of her mouth. She looked back up, meeting his eyes again. “Good.”

I finished 'Mercy' after you recommended it and loved it! Do you have any more FemDom recs for me?
I'm glad you enjoyed it!! It's such a novel book to me in the way Sara redeems Beau and writes him as a brat, and I really loved the taboo "best friend's son" thing. Here are some more femdom recs
Contemporary
Beg For It by Megan Hart: A second chance femdom romance! They met when they were in their early 20s they just naturally figure out their dynamic and he's very service oriented (at one point she's crying while she remembers how he would meticulously paint her nails and tbh I felt that) and likes punishment. Fast forward and they're both middle aged and she's divorced, and he ends up buying(?) the company she works which is how they meet again and they resume their relationship. Also, the DEFIANCE in this middle aged man when he's like "I'm not your boy anymore!!" is very funny and patently untrue. Plus, there's pegging that isn't relegated to a bonus scene.
Preferential Treatment by Heather Guerre: One of my favorite Fated Mates recs; he's a billionaire and she's his employee he pays to domme him. There are a lot of sexually charged chess games (with sex toys...?) and there's a financial domination aspect, the most hysterical part being that she has him donating to PACs dedicated to overthrowing Citizens United
What Was Meant to By by Heather Guerre: Marriage of convenience set in a small town except this small town blue collar man likes to be called a good boy in bed and loves it when his wife takes charge.
Also sidenote, I've seen multiple reviews complaining about how they were "surprised" Rain was the dominant one and "it didn't make sense considering she'd been isolated a lot of her adult life" and "there was no backstory" to which I'd say, why does there need to be a backstory? Why does there need to be an explanation about why Rain likes what she likes when I doubt any of these people would require one if it turned out the hero was the more dominant one in the bedroom. Especially in a book that isn't mainly about exploring kink and the mcs just kind of have kinks that fit together, there's little need, and I'd love to see more of that in romance novels.
Rules We Break by Dana Isaly: This is a novella; She's older and his boss, and they rekindle their relationship for a night in Nashville. There's service stuff, there's punishment, there's a lot of toys.
Historical:
The Duke I Tempted by Scarlett Peckham: Marriage of convenience between a powerful duke and a gardener— the bargain is an heir for money for her gardening business except they fall in love ofc, all while he's hiding that he's a masochist and frequents whipping houses. The reveal (to Poppy) happens fairly late in the book from what I remember, but she does ask him to teach her how to please him.
Would I Lie to the Duke by Eva Leigh: She's in the soapmaking business and he's a duke but also v business oriented; I remember him being kind of an.... alpha sub? If that makes any sense whatsoever, but he's into submission/service-oriented but he's still kind of calling the shots with Jessica especially in the beginning.
Scandalous Passions by Nicola Davidson: an MFF romance set in the 1600s in Scotland between an ex-royal mistress, a naive ingenue type, and a strong but silent soldier; the ex-mistress, Janet, definitely takes charge of her earlier encounters with Marjorie and Lachlan and kind of controlled the proceedings from what I remember. Also, solid dirty talk as is standard for this author.
Nicola Davidson has a handful of other femdom books from what I remember, but I've yet to read them. I'm also told The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes by Cat Sebastian qualifies

It’s the best and worst task of the year for us, because we read so many fabulous books over the course of the year, and choosing ten is hard for us, ok? But here they are — ten gorgeous books that we adored—books that delivered all the things we love in romance: sharp edges, sparkling dialogue, strong heroines and smoking hot chemistry.
Buy the Fated Mates Best of Book Pack in one fell swoop from our friends at Old Town Books in Alexandria Virginia, and get the eight traditionally published books on the list and a Fated Mates sticker! We love the idea of you gifting yourself this box, but maybe you’d like to slide into someone’s text messages with the link as a very excellent gift for you! Or…you can do what Sarah does, and buy the box and spread the love around—sending each of the books to someone on your list. FYI, you can also throw in other books (or a signed Sarah MacLean book!) if you’d like! Let us know what you end up doing with these fabulous books, and don’t forget to tag us on Instagram or Twitter when you unbox (#FMBestof22)!

Hiver 1922, Hylewood, Canada (3/3)
Terrifiante, belle, glaciale. Mais pas « mignonne ». Marie LeBris : Ça me va.

quick & dirty werewolf romance rec list
Wolfsong & the rest of the Green Creek Series by TJ Klune. Addictive, heart wrenching, fantastic. MM, adult, coming of age gay romances with high drama and romantic tension. If you want to read about werewolves, this is the gold standard. I'm in love with Klune's writing style. LGBTQA+ rep -- book three features an ace romance!!!
Cold Hearted by Heather Guerre (Tooth and Claw #1). @matsuoclan has the BEST book recommendations, oh my god. Grace moves to a remote town in Alaska to escape her past, and finds a new family, and more besides. Explores the themes of loneliness and depression with a supernatural twist, with a sprinkle of enemies to lovers. Love this book, will devour the series >:3
Ruby and the Wolf by Clover Down. @dominimoonbeam remains one of my favourite PNR writers. After putting her life on the line for a stranger, Ruby finds herself on the run from vampires with the wolf she saved. SO STEAMY. SO GOOD.
Mating the Huntress by Talia Hibbert. A werewolf falls head over heels for a hunter. SO GOOD. SO FUN. READ IT.
The Lone Wolf's Rejected Mate by Cate C Wells. Another book rec from a moot that I devoured. Wells is a guilty pleasure, and this is my favourite of this series. Deals with trauma, mind the content warnings, Darragh has my heart.
Tumblr recs
@monstersandmaw - Gabe and Odessa, complete, full novel. I cannot tell you how many times I've read this story. It's a comfort read okay. Slow burn. Odessa, lawyer, escaping the city, moves into a small cabin in the woods and meets Gabe, a park ranger, with more to him than it seems. Just a beautiful story.
@snowkissedmonsters - Candy and the wolves. Explores poly dynamics between a wolfpack and the human waitress Candy who is their mate. Gorgeous art to accompany it too!
