Snake

⚕️With a terrible past and the knowledge that he is different from the average human, it is no wonder that Snake has drilling insecurities when it comes to his looks. He can’t bring himself initially to show himself to you with his scales and a few of his snakes always with him. The only option left is stalking and his snakes do an excellent job in it. They can fit almost everywhere and even bring him little souvenirs from you. Snake, who at first thinks that this is wrong, is gullible with his longing and accepts what his snakes bring him and tell him about you.

⚕️There are days where he himself strolls behind you for a bit just to quench a bit of his heartache yet on that day you only worsen it when you openly tell one of your friends that you like someone and want to confess. Even his freaking snakes are shocked by those news before that shock turns into anger. Whoever that crush of yours is has to be removed since they���re Snake’s rival. Snake on the other hand just leaves the scene silently with his head hung low, tears shimmering in his eyes. He’s not surprised that you found someone, he can never hope to be noticed by someone as wonderful as you after all.

⚕️Days of being a sorrowful shell and his snakes planning murder turns into one big mess of emotions when you come to him one day whilst he’s running some errands to confess to him. His heart is in his throat, his knees turn into jelly and he starts blushing sweetly when he hears that you’ve admired him for a while now from far away. His snakes are ecstatic though now that they understand that you’ve liked Snake all along, urge him to accept your love since this is what he always wanted in the first place. Snake himself will grow clingy quickly since he needs some love.

Shiota Nagisa

🐍Nagisa is more reversed and shy around his darling, awfully awkward and nervous. With the start of his obsession comes a certain fear of what you might think of him as he winds up being more insecure. That’s what ends up making him a stalker and initially Nagisa feels more comfortable with this way. He’s stealthy and more invisible which allows him to never be noticed as he watches you obsessively and learns more and more about you. When he one day overhears you mentioning that there is this guy you like, his poor heart shatters a bit.

🐍Nagisa just freezes in his hiding place and doesn’t follow you when you go on. No, he has to mend his own broken heart at first. He is visibly more down and far more quiet the following days, prefers to be completely alone since he can’t fully hide his pain. Obviously you would end up liking someone who isn’t him, you probably don’t even know that he exists. He feels pathetic but can’t help the bitter jealousy dwelling up inside of him either as he wonders who your crush might be. He hasn’t noticed anyone you’ve shown interest him and that frustrates him even more. There is slight guilt though for feeling that way since it’s partially also his fault.

🐍The whole bitterness changes into a bubbly feeling inside his stomach when you end up confessing to him, admitting that you’ve admired him from the distance for a while now. There is a blush appearing on his cheeks as Nagisa tries to piece together a coherent sentence yet with his heart fluttering inside of his chest, he can’t help the stutter in his voice. So the whole time you’ve been crushing on him? How? He isn’t even all that special. You two end up dating after that day though as Nagisa couldn’t possibly say no to your anticipating and slightly shy face. Maybe you can help him being more confident in his charms.

Jericho

🟪Jericho is a bit more tsunderish and likes to keep up the tough facade in order to prove herself to all the other men. Yet she can’t stop herself from being terribly embarrassed and flustered when you’re anywhere near her since she gets so incredibly nervous. She knows that she has it bad but is too proud and embarrassed to admit that to you. Unable to act cool around you, Jericho ends up rather watching you from a safe distance. This is somehow under her pride too but it’s better than having an error when around you. She fawns over things she finds cute about you too.

🟪She’s heartbroken when she eavesdrops on that particular day on you admitting to your friends that you’ve really liked one of the knights for a longer while now. Pain and anger clouds her mind and in the next moment she’s storming away, not caring about the fact that you might see her. Her hands are clenched into tight fists, she bites down on her bottom lip and to her huge shame she feels even tears pricking her eyes. Why is she reacting like this? She’s more brash the following days, more rude to people around her as a way to cope with her pain. She also tries to avoid you as good as she can.

🟪When you approach you a few days later, she initially plans to shoo you away with her brashness since it’s painful to see you. All the bitter emotions crash down when you confess to her that you’ve admired her bravery and determination despite being a woman for a while now. She sort of stops for a while as the gears in her head turn around. You like whom? Her? You were talking about her on that day?! When she realizes that, her whole face turns red as she turns shy and flustered, not able to keep her cool act together anymore. Jericho feels embarrassed for a while for misunderstanding the situation but she’s also really happy that you like her.

Iguro Obanai

🐍Obanai views himself as tainted and keeps his distance out of shame, fears additionally that his face might disgust you. You’re pure and kind and somehow the Hashira can’t see himself as fully worthy. So he takes a role as a silent protector, adores you from a safe distance. Sometimes his snake follows you around when he can’t and gives him later that day a report. Obanai is undeniably more possessive though and ends up threatening and scaring away all of darling’s possible admirers since he can’t see any of them as good enough for them.

🐍He feels a painful dagger being plunged into his very heart when he overhears you one day telling your friends that there’s someone you really like. This can’t be. Why? Obanai knows that he’s being irrational right now since he himself desires you but doesn’t even show his face in front of you out of his belief that he’s tainted. He shouldn’t act so selfishly but he can’t help himself. The other Hashira see him rarely the following days as Obanai hides from everyone in an attempt to cope with his fresh heartbreak. Who is the person that you like anyways? He’s sure that he’s scared anyone away from you.

🐍He’s shocked when Mitsuri catches him one day and tells him that she’s been searching for him. Apparently you want to see him and so she volunteered to find him. You know him? Obanai is skittish and slightly nervous when he comes to the place where you wait for him. He’s never been that close to you before, can’t help but admire you. When you confess to him though, he’s in disbelief as he just stares at you with his heterochromic eyes. You get scared by his silence at first until you realize that he’s staring at you with unlimited fondness in his eyes as if you’re the entire world for him.

Saotome Yoichi

🟩Yoichi is very shy around his darling even if he tries to be helpful to them when he sees the opportunity to do so. Otherwise the guy tends to stay a bit out of the picture as he tries to collect a semblance of calmness around him. He doesn’t want to be constantly that shy and nervous around you so he doesn’t accidentally screw anything up, not to mention that Yu and Shiho constantly tell him that he should act more like a man around you. Yoichi can’t help but fawn over you though since you’re that precious and sweet in his eyes. He’s struck, no one can help him.

🟩He silently makes his exit when he eavesdrops on day on a conversation between you and your friends. The knowledge that you love someone cracks his heart and initially he just hides in his room so he won’t be disturbed by anyone. It just hurts and chances are that the poor boy ends up crying a bit out of sorrow. Worst is that he knows that he probably should have listened to his friends when they gave him the advice to show himself more around you since remaining as a background person wouldn’t help you notice him. It’s his fault and now you love someone else.

🟩You catch him off guard when you come running to him one day as he walks somberly around. Seeing you has his heart hurting and fluttering simultaneously as he pushes tears in his eyes back. Yoichi wants to face you properly at least one time now that it’s too late anyways. That gathered strength crumbles when he finds out the truth though. He’s been the one you’ve admired for so long with his kindness and altruistic behavior. Tears he fought back end up spilling out a bit but this time because Yoichi is really happy and relieved that you still noticed him despite his cowardly hiding from you.

Kurotsuchi Nemu

◼️As a rather shy and withdrawn woman, Nemu is the type who prefers watching her darling silently from the distance instead of actually trying to talk to them. You can’t expect Mayuri to be an overly good teacher for her in regards of her emotions and how to express them. This winds up as Nemu having not a single clue what it is she even feels for you, all she knows that she gets this weird and warm ticklish feeling in her stomach. She has the habit of staring very intensely though so you might have caught her just looking at you already quite a few times in the past.

◼️Her melancholic expression doesn’t change even a bit yet something inside of her heart moves when she one day hears you saying that you like someone else. There is a full aching inside of her chest and she really thinks that something is wrong with her. Most likely ends up telling Mayuri that she thinks she has a defect but the captain just tells her off so she doesn’t bother him with her whole love life story. When she tells the story in the Shinigami Women’s Association, she gets the completely opposite direction as everyone tries to cheer her up, explaining that she suffers from a case of broken heart.

◼️Nemu stares at you, blinks a few times, doesn’t say a word. She’s out of ideas what she is supposed to say in such a situation now that you’ve confessed to her and told her that you liked her. It gets awkward quickly and causes you to feel embarrassed and hurt. After a while she finally asks you if you were talking on that day about her too as she realizes that she’s been misunderstanding the whole thing. And then she accepts your confession. Just like that. You have essentially a newborn when it comes to the topic of wholesome romance so you have a lot of things to teach her.

This wk I started an obssession with Taichi's character in Dokurojo

Quick correction though: Saotome Taichi is a taishu engeki actor, it's a different genre from kabuki, like how noh=/=kabuki even though they are forms of traditional japanese theatre. He is the second generation leader of his theatre troupe Gekidan Suzaku and a leading figure in taishu engeki, playing a major role in reviving its declining popularity with the younger generation of audiences and injecting new blood into the field.

Dokurojo no Shichinin

So the moment that the Uta-Awase contest was over, Mabs and I dashed out of class to met up with Alex and Beryl, and the four of us practically ran to the movie theater near Kyoto Station to see the movie “Dokurojo no Shichinin” for the second time!  the four of us had gone to see it shortly after it came out, and it was so wonderful that we were all super excited for the chance to see it again!

Dokurojo no Shichinin (or “Seven Souls in the Skull Castle”) is a film of a kabuki-style play.  But this is not traditional kabuki!  It’s updated for a modern audience, has a cast of very famous actors, and contains lots of anime-like aspects and flashy, video game-ish battle sequences.  It’s about three and a half hours long, and has an intermission in the middle, but especially because this was our second time seeing it, we were all so into it that the time flew by!

Dokurojo no Shichinin

See?!  What did I tell you?!  It’s sooo cool!

Aaah, the battle sequences with the metal in the background… so epic that I legit started crying because I hadn’t seen anything this cool since Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. XD (yes, I am aware of how dorky that sounds)

But yeah, I have so many good things to say about this movie!  The characters are all really interesting with cool designs, this is based on the Sengoku Period (which, as you should know very well by now, we are quite fond of), the female characters are actually very strong and cool (surprising for a samurai movie), the choreography of the battle sequences is fantastic, and it is a good mix of action, humor, and interesting story.

And then there’s Ranbei:

He’s so pretty and graceful, and had a really cool voice too.  He earned himself some new fangirls; he was definitely our favorite. (Probably mostly because he’s pretty)

It turns out that the actor who plays Ranbei is a 20-year-old kabuki actor who has been acting in kabuki plays for his whole life, and usually plays women’s roles.  (traditionally, all of the parts in kabuki plays are played by men)  That explains the prettiness.

But yeah, back to the subject of Dokurojo, we’re all really really really hoping that they release this on DVD with English subtitles, because we would all buy it immediately!  (And English subtitles would be nice, since I’m sure we missed a few things.  Sometimes it’s hard to understand the way that samurai talk)

(10/10) ST☆RISH Special Training! - LE Event Story Translation (UR Masato, SR Ren)

Synopsis: On their "ST☆RISH Search!" program, it has been decided that ST☆RISH will be holding a summer training camp in preparation for their upcoming concert. And the destination for the camp will be on the beach! Masato who became the facilitator of the event is getting enthusiastic, along with Ren who casually providing a follow-up support. A hot and exciting summer that weaves the seven members is about to begin—!

Ch 1:

Currently on "ST☆RISH Search!" program. Natsuki: And for the "Masterpiece Drama Cooking Recreation Championship" this time! The winning member is… Natsuki: Masato-kun who impressed the judges with his overwhelming ability to perfectly recreate the dish and its delicious taste. Congratulations~♪ Masato: Thank you. Truth to be told, I'm honestly happy that I was able to win since I worked hard and even struggled on trying to express the world of it's original dish. Syo: And wow, would you look at that! It looks like the winner, Hijirikawa, will receive a great prize in return! Tokiya: That's quite a big box. As if its size could actually fit a person inside of it… Shining: That's right! And the prize for the champion is actually~, the right to decide the location for ST☆RISH's summer training camp! Otoya: Whoa!? He's really in there! Masato: S-Summer training camp…? This is the first time I heard of such an event… Shining: It's a surprise! In preparation for the upcoming concert, we're aiming to further improve your performance before then! Ren: Heh, that sounds good. …Especially if we were actually indeed talking about a proper training camp, that is. Shining: Now then, let's go and decide the destination right away. Come on, Mr. Hijirikawa! The roulette starts! Masato: It looks like our fate relies on this dart. Putting all of my soul in this one throw*…ha! Tokiya: "A tropical training camp for three days and two nights on a beach in the southern island"… It's been decided, Hijirikawa-san! Otoya: Beach huh, that's great! I wonder what kind of other candidates were left behind…Oh, there's a mountain too. Cecil: And then there's also a temple, a waterfall and… "a scrubbing brush"? Does that mean it'll be a cleaning training camp…? Shining: The training camp will be broadcast on "ST☆RISH Search!" at a later date. Stay tuned and see you! Ren: I wonder just where did he went off to in that split second. …Pull yourself together, Hijirikawa. As a winner, don't forget your message for all the ladies out there. Masato: Uh, yeah…you're right. …Although it was quite an unexpected turn of event, if the purpose of the training camp is to improve our skills, then we'll just have to give it our all. Masato: And with this, we promise you that we'll be back and show you an improved version of ourselves on the next concert. Please look forward to it.

*: Idk exactly on how to translate 一投入魂, but the jp article that I read, the phrase means concentrating/putting all of your heart and soul or going all in and trying really hard on something. It's mostly used on ball sports, such as baseball, tennis, badminton etc to boost the morale of the players.

Ch 2:

On the first day of the training camp at Saotome's private beach. Otoya: It's the sea-! Look, it's so beautiful. It makes me want to just jump and dive into it! Syo: That's right, especially in this hot weather. …Shall we go and do it? Shall we! Cecil: Uh, I-I… I'm fine with just looking at it from the distance for now. Besides I don't even have a swim tube with me… Tokiya: Otoya, Syo. Since we're in a training camp right now, please try to act and behave as a group. Remember that we need to follow the instructions of the facilitator, which is Hijirikawa-san. Masato: Thank you for your kindness, Ichinose. Although I'm the facilitator, it was all because I was appointed by the President…but I'll try to do all my best in it. Masato: From what I can confirm, the schedule is actually pretty packed. If you ever want to go swimming in the sea, please do so during our free time later. Natsuki: Wow, so there is a free time later on. I thought for sure that it'll always be a training or practice all day. Tokiya: I guess it means that it's important to take a break from time to time. It seems that the schedule has been prepared in a surprisingly reasonable manner. Masato: Without further ado, let me explain our first activity for today. First, we'll go and do some running on the beach to build up our strength. Ren: I see… I guess the unevenness of the sand will put a strain on our muscles, so we have to work out on a different muscles than the usual, is that what it means? Otoya: Although it seems quite difficult, but somehow it looks so fun! I do want to go swim in the sea but… I'll try to do my best in this and do that later as a reward after the special training ends. Ren: In that case, I have a suggestion that will raise Ikki's excitement even more. Since we're at it, how about adding a little bit of game into the mix? Ren: Instead of just running, why don't we make it into a race? That's right… the finish line should be around those palm tress over there. Otoya: That's a good idea! That would make the training a lot more fun! Masa, how about it? Masato: Yeah, it's perfectly okay. Now then everyone, please line up in a line. Take your positions… Ready, go! Cecil: It's really hard to run on the sand…! But I can't give up just yet…Oh? Syo: What? Somehow I could hear a sound like an animal's growl just now… Wait, is that a lion!? What is it doing around here! Natsuki: Wow, that's Rodriguez-chan, the animal talent from Shining Agency. Fufu, come over here~! Tokiya: What are you doing by calling it out…! If it pounce on you, who knows what might happen later!? Ren: I guess this is what they truly mean by running for your life literally…! Looks like it's going to be an even harder training session from now on.

Ch 3:

Masato: *pants* …We managed to escape somehow. Are you all okay? Otoya: Yeah. But still…*sigh* I was so surprised. That was some crazy training right off the bat… Natsuki: Yes, I had a lo~t of fun! Rodriguez-chan was so cute as always~ Syo: Cute, you say… I was chased back and forth and had all of my strength drained at once! Cecil: I had completely forgotten… This training camp was organized by Saotome himself. There's no way that it'll be an ordinary training camp… Tokiya: …*sigh* This makes the match invalid, right? Since we all tied. Ren: Fufu, then let's go and redo it on the next one. Of course we're not going to just end this by only running, right? Masato: Right. There will be a couple of beach competitions to work on your reflexes. This time it's a team event. Masato: By the way, since this is before lunch, there are already rewards prepared for it. The winning team will be given a high-quality food ingredients… Masato: While the losing team will have the usual ingredients and they will be in charge for cooking lunch. Natsuki: If you lose that means you can go and do some cooking? But if I lose then I would feel bad for the other members of the team… Ren: Haha, maybe that's why it's a team competition. I guess we can't afford to slack off. Natsuki: Yes. This time, I think I'll try and leave it to the result of the serious battle! - Masato: Okay. So, here are the results from our rock-paper-scissors game. First team will be Ittoki, Shinomiya and me. Ren: And over here we have me, Icchi, Cesshi and Ochibi-chan, huh. It's quite a nice balance. Masato: Now then, let's get started right away. The first event is "Shiritori* Beach Volleyball". Tokiya: So that means while we're playing, you're supposed to play a shiritori when you hit the ball, right. Since we have one more person over here, we can take turns on being a referee. Syo: Alright! If food is on the line, then I can't afford to lose! I'll make sure I definitely win this!! - Cecil: So far, the beach competitions have been a tie. It's a truly tight match. Ren: The outcome… I guess it'll be decided in the next beach flag showdown. This is a battle we can't afford to lose no matter what. Cecil: Yes! For the sake of delicious foods, I'll make sure I won't lose…! Masato: Ah, everyone seems to be in high spirits. Now then, let's begin with the final match!

*: Shiritori is a Japanese word game in which the players are required to say a word which begins with the final kana of the previous word. No distinction is made between hiragana, katakana, and kanji. It's like a word chain game where you play using the last letter of your opponent's word.

Ch 4:

Masato: And so, the result of the final beach flag showdown…will be decided in which team is the first one who capture the three flags, which means the winner is our team. Otoya: Yaayy! Although we barely made it, but with this we finally got the high-quality ingredients! Ren: Although it was actually quite a close match, but well… a loss is a loss. We will make the lunch with all of our hearts in it. Natsuki: Wow, so these are all the high-quality ingredients for the winning team? Matsusaka beef, spiny lobsters…. Oh, and there are also crabs in it too! Tokiya: For our part, it's just a very common barbeque ingredients. I'm relieved to see that it was actually something edible that we can normally eat. Masato: In other words, I guess this is like a sign of encouragement for our training later in afternoon. …Well then, I'll leave the cooking to you guys. Syo: Got it. Well, barbecue is all about cutting and grilling, so you can leave it to me! Syo: But still, if we had won then Natsuki would be the one in charge of the cooking, right? In a way, you could say that we're actually lucky. Natsuki: Syo-chan, did you really want to eat my cooking that badly? If that's the case, then I'll go and make a dessert too! Ren: That's a good idea. Shinomi's special dessert would be really stimulating. Cecil: W-We might get full just from eating the barbecue alone. I mean we have so many ingredients here too… Masato: T-That's right. I mean…we're also pressed for time too, so let's save Shinomiya's dessert for another time. Natsuki: Is that so…that's too bad. I thought banana with sea urchin cream sauce and raw oysters would be delicious… Otoya: Haha, you're still the same as usual. This might be quite a crazy and chaotic training camp, but somehow it reminds me back of our school days! Tokiya: Indeed. However, we're no longer students, but a full-fledged professionals now. Tokiya: …It seems to me that you have been eating more than you should, but as a pro, can you handle a hard afternoon menu later, Otoya? Otoya: Urgh. M-Maybe it's time for me to stop…. It's really such a shame but… here, I'll give my last piece of Matsusaka beef to you, Tokiya! Tokiya: No, thanks. That meat has way too much fat, and besides I've eaten plenty already… Otoya: You liar. Tokiya, you've been eating nothing but only vegetables! If you're a pro, then building your strength is also a part of your job, right?

Ch 5:

In the afternoon, during an indoor dance lesson. Ren: Phew… I guess we finally managed to get the choreography for now. Though personally, there are still a few things I'm worried about. Otoya: Eh, really? I thought for sure that it was already great just now… Masato: I also thought that we did a pretty good job too, but… if you have any concerns, then why don't you speak that out, Jinguji? Ren: …Rather than our performance, I think it's more a matter of the venue for our next concert. Ren: In order to convey our passion even to the farthest seats, I felt that we should adjust the choreography to be a bit more dynamic. Natsuki: I see… Indeed, when considering about the venue, I think Ren-kun might be right. Cecil: Yes. To think that you even paid attention to such details, I am very impressed with you, Ren! Ren: It's just by chance. But if everyone agress, let's go and try to think about making adjustment in that direction. Masato: …Wait a minute. Listening to what you've just said reminded me of something… Can we try out this device first as a trial? Natsuki: Wow… it feels so realistic. It's as if we're standing on a real stage! Syo: This is made by the Hijirikawa Group, right? As always, their technology is incredible… Masato: That's right. Although it's still in prototype stage, but it should hep us visualize how it would look like. Let's go and try it out immediately while imagining that we're in the concert now. - Tokiya: I see. Now that you said it, when we dance in this environment, you can see that the current choreography lacks an impact. Ren: Buf if we spread out too much, our sense of unity will weaken, right? I think we need to be more conscious of moving our bodies like this— - Masato: …Phew. What do you think, everyone? I felt we finally got the answer just now, right? Natsuki: Yes…I think so too! With this we'll be able to perform in the best possible way…! Syo: Alright, we finally complete it~! Seriously… I feel like everything that I had for lunch has completely been digested… Cecil: Fufu, Syo's stomach is growling. That's proof that he's been working hard— Masato: Pft, you too, Aijima. …According to the schedule, there should have been a training too after this but… I guess a slight change in order won't hurt anyone. Masato: Now it's time for dinner. You can leave the cooking to us.

Ch 6:

Masato: Sleeping on a laid out futons in the lesson room… This is definitely what makes training camp felt unique. Syo: I feel like I can fall asleep right now… I mean, it's only the first day, so I should be able to sleep normally after this, right!? Otoya: Maybe…? I mean they did made us do a test of courage even after dinner, saying that it was to train our facial expression skills… Cecil: And just when I thought that was over, there's already a game waiting for us with tomorrow's breakfast at stake! Masato: True… but just in case, I already checked and there's nothing on the schedule. The number of surprise events we've encountered for today should have been more than enough. Ren: Haha. With all the surprises going on, everyone has been totally paranoid. I'm sure that once it's over, it'll be a fun memory. Tokiya: Although I'm not denying it, but… I have mixed feelings about the fact that this will continue on for two more days. Otoya: Ahaha… But somehow this feels like our special training camp! One where you wouldn't encounter in a normal way. Natsuki: You're right. Although it was quite tough and difficult, but it was also fun and interesting… I think I laughed a lot for today too. Syo: There were also time when all I could do was just laugh at the situation. But well, I guess it means that it was fun enough that it makes you laugh? Cecil: I guess so. Even though we were all so tired, there's no one who give up and said that it's impossible for them. Ren: Why of course. If we think about all of the fans who are waiting for us, ST☆RISH, there's no way we can afford to have a weak mindset. Masato: Nowadays, we don't have that many opportunities to spend so much time together with all members. I felt like it's been a while. Natsuki: You're right. And that's why this training camp is so much fun, and such a joyful time! I'm sure that tomorrow will be the same too! Syo: Yeah! But please keep all of the surprises like today in moderation for tomorrow… - Otoya: —and then… Wait, that's right! We have some free time tomorrow, right!? Did all of you bring your swimwears? “Birdie Wing”: A Golf Yuri Story Soaring to New Heights

On April 6, 2022, Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story premiered on Crunchyroll. This series tells the story of Eve, a girl who plays underground golf games to support her friends, and their orphan children, who meets her match in Aoi, a wealthy Japanese girl.

Reprinted from The Geekiary, my History Hermann WordPress blog (it will be published on Dec. 30 there) and Wayback Machine. This was the forty-third article I wrote for The Geekiary. This post was originally published on July 3, 2022.

Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story is an original golf anime series directed by Takayuki Inagaki and written by Yōsuke Kuroda. Unlike other anime, it is not based on a manga or a light novel. Bandai Namco Pictures produces the series. They are a subsidiary of a company formerly named Sunrise, which produced series within the Love Live! franchise, Cowboy Bebop and Dirty Pair.

Trigger Warning: This post mentions sensitive topics such as bodily injury, blood, and bullying.

The first season of this yuri sports series began with a bang, with intense female sports rivalries, golf mafia, and smoking hot characters. Eve (Akari Kitō) defeats her opponents time and again with her golf style of piercing their hearts (and minds) with her "rainbow bullets". Aoi Amawashi (Asami Seto) changes everything for her and makes her excited, ecstatic to play against her in golf. As a warning, this post has spoilers for the first season of Birdie Wing.

This series is unlike any other sports anime I've ever seen. It fulfills what some reviewers, like Yuricon founder Erica Friedman, hoped for in the past. It is not perfect, but its absurdity and clear yuri themes mix well together.

Birdie Wing is, by far, the best anime I've watched this year, much better than Komi Can't Communicate, A Couple of Cuckoos, and Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie. All those series have their merits, but are not as intense, wacky, or relatable as Birdie Wing by a long shot.

The last seven episodes of Season 1 had even higher stakes than the first six episodes which I reviewed in mid-May. Eve plays an "ultimate" golf game against Rose and wins. She then flees the European country of Nafrece to Japan to escape the golf-obsessed mafia who wants to kill her. The later episodes have Eve enrolling in a prestigious Japanese golf academy. She gets closer to Aoi, who has a crush on her, as she tries to fulfill her promise to play her once again and win.

One of the best parts of this anime is the intensity between Eve and Aoi. While some criticized possible "questionable tropes" in Birdie Wing, the absurdity and series' unrealistic nature puts those claims into question.

The series is weird in a good way and has a sports angle which is extreme at times. Even so, it is hard to say it is trading goods for fanservice, as some critics argue, with those same critics even becoming invested in Eve and Aoi.

The series has garnered a significant following. The official Twitter account has tens of thousands of followers. Over 270 people follow the /r/BirdieWing subreddit. Fan art is spreading across social media. This undoubtedly played a role in Birdie Wing's renewal for a second season. It will premiere in January 2023.

Filled with Yuri

As I noted in my series recommendation, I became interested in this series after reading an article by The Mary Sue fandom editor Briana Lawrence highlighting yuri themes. She later described Birdie Wing as a "fantastically campy golf (love) story". There's more than that.

Aoi openly crushes on Eve, who uses her charm. In the above scene, Eve flirts with two Japanese girls and hangs out with them all day. Although this annoys her wannabe caddy, Ichina Saotome (Saki Fujita), this doesn't worry Eve.

In some ways, how Aoi feels about Eve is akin to Akari Tokitō's behavior toward Menou in The Executioner and Her Way of Life. Unlike that series, Eve often embarrasses Aoi and does things that make her heart beat fast.

For example, she lovingly touches Aoi in the head, demands Aoi play her while coming out of the shower naked, and kisses Aoi on the cheek. In the latter example, she says this is "normal" for girls to do. Aoi's caddy, Amane Shinjō (Ami Koshimizu), and Ichina are flabbergasted. Amane declares she can't do that in front of the press. Ichina mentions lily flowers blooming, a reference to yuri.

As reviewers have pointed out, Aoi and Eve are "super gay". There are also characters like Vipére (the snake lady). She inappropriately flirts with Eve during a golf match. Her affection is ignored because she focuses on Aoi instead.

The snake lady later becomes a friend of Eve. She helps get Eve, her friend Lily Lipman (Akira Sekine), Lily's sister Klein Clara (Sayaka Kinoshita), and their three orphan immigrant children, the adopted sisters of Eve and Lily, the proper forms. With the documents they can live free from the Mafia.

Others pointed out that the series is able to flex its "sapphic muscles" more once episodes take place at an all-girls academy. This theme is common to many yuri series. Adachi and Shimamura, Bloom Into You, Sweet Blue Flowers, Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl, Dear Brother, and Blue Drop, are all set in schools.

Yuricon founder Erica Friedman added that the series is similar to I’m in Love With The Villainess, with a "hefty splash of...yuri". She asked whether the audience will get "passionate platonic sisters or passionate platonic partners in golf" or something else.

Friedman said we probably won't get the end we want but gave the series a top score for yuri. She further argued the series is close to "being the greatest Yuri sports anime of all time."

The Most Birdie Wing of Them All

Certainly, sports anime are relatable. Birdie Wing is nothing like any of the other golf anime or manga out there, including one short film centered on golf girls, Sorairo Utility.

This series flaunts the rules of the sports genre, with characters either arrogant or supremely confident in their skills. They are competent enough to back up those feelings. Any of their errors turn into comedic moments, often with a yuri tinge when Aoi and Eve are involved.

This makes the series fun to watch. Although some have voiced concern that the series will "run out of crazy ideas" which make golf interesting, I doubt that will be the case. Instead, the series has beautiful musical montages of golf bullying. It has underground assassins trained in golf techniques. U.S. corporate executives sitting in their plush chairs, cancelling queer shows, would laugh off this series.

Birdie Wing is filled with terrible women, from top to bottom. It features golf crime with Mafia who believe that golf games are a way to solve problems. What other series out there are like this? I can't think of anything remotely similar other than the yuri comedy, YuruYuri.

It is an over-the-top series with dramatic tension and absurdity which pulls you in. It makes golf, a disgusting elitist sport, interesting to watch. How this series got made, and why, I don't know. But, it's here for us to enjoy.

After all, golf competition and rising the ranks is central to this series, with Eve and Aoi wanting to have a rematch. Both have a dream to become professional golfers The series follows them as they "battle it out in the biggest tournaments" as the official description says.

Birdie Wing is nothing like other-girl focused sports anime, such as Kandagawa Jet Girls, Iwa-Kakeru! Climbing Girls, or Tamayomi, some of which have yuri subtext. It is in a league of its own. It is not on par to any other sports anime I'm aware of currently.

The interaction between Aoi and Eve is one of the best parts of the series. They often tease each other and have a good time, even able to work with one another despite their different styles, even making bets. In one episode, Aoi says that thanks to Eve's influence, expectations on her will not tie her down, which surprises Amane.

Handling Heavy Themes

Some criticized the series of running the risk of "mishandling heavy themes" in the midst of its "high-octane action". This includes the claim that issues of police brutality and Eve's undocumented family fade into the background. For a series which can accurately be called "Birdie Wing : Yuri on Green" and with adorable golfer lesbians (Eve and Aoi), this criticism might seen to ring true.

It is a faulty criticism. The series does focus on heavy themes. The show's seventh episode is the first time the audience learns the names of Klein's immigrant orphan children: Emily, Charlotte, and Jessica. Thinking of her adopted sisters gives Eve the strength to defeat Rose Aleon (Toa Yukinari), who is a go-between for Eve (and Klein) to the underworld.

The snake lady gives them the proper identification forms after Eve's victory over Rose. All the while they are flush in cash. Later Anri (Chiaki Omigawa), one of Rose's subordinates, lashed out at Eve, for Rose's defeat, advising her to travel abroad to Japan. At the same time, Rose is assassinated by the Mafia after talking to Leo. Some heavy stuff!

We also learn, in the eighth episode of Birdie Wing, that the orphans are from Syria (Charlotte), Somalia (Jessica), and Palestine (Emily), as stated on their new IDs. Although this is not a major focus of the series after Eve goes to Japan, we do see the orphans going to school. In another episode, we see Lily and Klein are working at their new legal restaurant/bar, The White Hart.

This is an improvement for Lily and Klein. As one fan pointed out, they were implied in episode six of Birdie Wing as working as underage prostitutes in the Nafrece slums before Klein got her past restaurant which the Mafia destroyed in their crooked "redevelopment" effort.

In some ways, the series focuses on the exclusivity of golf. This is something that Malvina Reynolds sang about in her 1963 folk song, "Little Boxes". In the song, she sings about people in suburbia playing on the golf course and drinking dry Martinis.

Aoi, as a daughter of a business executive, is tied into the high life. However, Eve would never forget where she is from. Her presence and demeanor stands against the "professionalism" of golf, putting her street smarts to good use.

This fits with her utter disregard for academics. She is no Kim Possible and trying to excel in her classes. Instead she is a transfer student at a premier golfing school, Raiho Girls' Academy, backed by a golfing brand.

She likely sees the school as stuck-up. She gives it a bad name by declaring war on Japanese golf champion Mizuho Himekawa (Yukari Tamura). It is implied that she isn't a good student, even sleeping during class. Somehow she stays there without being expelled, suspended, or the like. Possibly, the academy's shady golf club adviser, Reiya Amuro (Tōru Furuya), wants her around.

Compelling Characters and Plot

The plot and characters of Birdie Wing are some of the series' strong suits. The show's official website currently lists 24 characters. While Klein appears to be the only character listed with brown skin, the opening sequence shows a Black woman at the end. This implies that Eve and Aoi would face a Black female golfer in the show's second season.

Episodes of Birdie Wing are filled with high-stakes golf matches. Signature golf drives by Eve, often terming it the "rainbow bullets", which come in many different colors, are at the center. There's also Rose's "Crimson Rose Bullet" and other "bullets" Aoi declares.

In keeping with the show's yuri themes, the series' opening sequence shows golf drives of Aoi and Eve intertwined. In the ending sequence, Eve and Aoi are lying side by side, with their silhouettes touching.

Leo Millafoden (Shūichi Ikeda), former legendary golfer, who trained Eve and other golfers, casts a shadow throughout the series. His motivations are unknown. They will likely be explored more in a second season.

The technologically advanced golf course owned by a mafia boss, Catherine (Umeka Shoji), added an interesting flair. The design of the course can be changed in an instant, even though it requires a lot of power and electricity.

The series became a bit sci-fi when it was revealed that Rose's arm is cybernetic, giving her an unfair advantage. The fact that her arm breaks off and falls to the ground, shows the stakes of the golf games.

The first season is divided into two arcs: Nafrece (episodes 1-8) and Japan (episodes 9-13). This is similar to the division of Disenchantment into various parts or acts which divide the first season of Arcane.

Even Ichina, who seems annoying at first, comes around to be a more compelling character. She becomes Eve's caddy and competes with Amane, Aoi's well-versed and tech-savvy caddy. Ichina grows over the course of the season.

There are funny moments, too. In one episode they talk with each other in internal monologues. In another, Aoi jumps toward Eve, overjoyed to see her, but Eve jumps out of the way. This series is filled with comedic moments, providing some levity.

The reaction of others to Eve makes the series interesting. For instance, students at the elite golf academy are intimidated by her, as she looks angry and pissed. Girls at the competition see Eve as scary, and mean, but pretty. They are taken in by her beauty.

Talented Cast and Crew

The amazing animation and backgrounds by Bandai Namco Pictures would be nothing without the efforts by the staff and voice actors.  The show's writer, Yōsuke Kuroda, was a head writer on Kokoro Library, Puni Puni Poemy, and Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid. The latter series is set in the same universe as Birdie Wing!

One of the two series composers, Kōtarō Nakagawa, is well-known for his anime work on the Code Geass series, Gosick, and Active Raid. The other composer, Hironori Anazawa, is known for her work on Scarlet Nexus, Shûkatsu Kazoku: Kitto, Umaku Iku, and many other series.

Takayuki Inagaki, the show's director, worked as an episode director on Chio's School Road, Sky Wizards Academy, and Rosario + Vampire. The show's animators and other crew worked on Azumanga Daioh, Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie, and Sailor Moon Crystal.

The show's cast are as talented. Some have lent their voices to characters in series with yuri themes, either indirectly or overtly, like The Demon Girl Next Door, Adachi and Shimamura, Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, A Centaur's Life, and Akebi's Sailor Uniform. Others voiced characters in the trans-centered slice-of-life drama, Wandering Son, and The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!

Tōru Furuya, especially, brought back a similar voice to many Sailor Moon fans. In that 1990s anime series, he famously voiced Tuxedo Mask, a masked hero who has a crush on Sailor Moon.

Additionally, I recognized that the voice actors of this series provided voices in Simoun, Yurikuma Arashi, Princess Connect! Re:Dive, Princess Principal, Asobi Asobase, Girl Friend Beta, Strawberry Panic!, and Maria Watches Over Us. Many of these series have yuri themes, something the voice actors could tap into for this series.

Looking Toward a Second Season

There are many avenues to explore in the next season. The above preview premiered after the airing of the season one finale. It shows that the stakes are higher than ever, with games against students from other schools. This includes Mizuho Himekawa (Yukari Tamura), Kaede Oikawa (Yu Kobayashi), Kaoruko Iijima (M・A・O), and Kuyou Iseshiba (Satomi Arai).

The preview shows the tough nature of golf, backstories of Aoi and Eve, and a possible assassination attempt against Eve. There are hints that Eve and Aoi are sisters. The status of Aoi as "totally bourgeoisie", as Ichina put it in one episode, could be a topic of episodes. This could manifest itself in Aoi losing her privileges or those privileges being threatened.

Predictably, the second season will focus on Eve. It may show she is a golf supersoldier trained as a tool of the Mafia. Maybe there is a trigger word which makes her subservient. Likely any past traumatic experiences she relegated to repressed memories will come flooding back.

However, Eve has no reason to go back to Naeferce and will stay in Japan for the foreseeable future. The same is the case for Eve's aggressive and brutish golf style, which will remain intact. However, they may end up losing the championship match.

Undoubtedly, the romantic feelings between Aoi and Eve will continue. They may even share the same room! I'm hopeful the series will not go the route of the problematic yuri romance Citrus or romantic comedy, Candy Boy. Both have incestuous romances between sisters, which cheapens representation.

Closing Words

I look forward to seeing how the series improves and changes in the next season. Unlike what I wrote about The Executioner and Her Way of Life, I don't see any issues with tone and don't believe there need to be stronger storylines.

The success of this series could pave the way for more original anime series from Bandai Namco Pictures and those licensed by Crunchyroll, perhaps with yuri themes. I wait in anticipation for the show's next season.
