Date Night
Here's a little Sanvers fic as part of the Mods' collection of example fics for the Supergirl May-hem event!
AO3 link
-
Alex ducks down behind a dumpster, nearly falling on her ass as Maggie slides in next to her, bumping into her with enough force to make the redhead have to grab onto the side of the dumpster to hold them both up. She’s utterly disgusted as her hands are immediately covered in a fluid she really hopes hasn’t come from the abandoned mattress, half sticking out the top of the trash.
“Gross.” Alex hisses.
“Sorry,” Maggie says, not really paying attention as she pulls out her gun.
Alex looks over at her in shock. “You brought a gun to date night.”
Maggie nods earnestly. “As current events show, sometimes date night can get derailed and we need a gun. Unless you want to fight whatever the hell kind of alien is trying to murder us with just your bare hands.”
Alex shakes her head, reaching behind her to pull out her own gun. “Nah, not when I have this baby.”
“You were giving me shit when you have your own?”
“I wasn’t giving you shit; I was just finding you very sexy.” Alex leans in to press her lips to her cheek quickly before she dives out from their hiding spot, her gun pointing up at the alien. It’s yellow, large and decidedly ugly.
Maggie joins Alex, her gun immediately finding its target. The alien looks kind of like a giant blob of Jell-O, and she’s not sure if that makes it more or less terrifying. Either way, they have to stop it before it takes over all of downtown. After that, maybe they can carry on with their date night. This is their first one in three weeks because of their jobs and all they want is a quiet night where they can eat at a greasy diner.
“How are we gonna stop it?” Maggie pants, unable to look away from it.
“Shoot now and ask questions later,” Alex says, looking equally as shocked at the appearance of the alien. She pauses after shooting her first round off into the alien, watching as the bullet gets lodged in the alien’s back as it merely scratches over the area where it was shot, tickled by the sensation. “Is it bad that I want to take a bite?”
“Yes.” Maggie nods, looking at Alex like she’s on something. “Now, call your sister to come and deal with this so we can go home and salvage what’s left of our night.”
Maggie has always been a little better at plans. Alex’s insistence on fighting before thoroughly assessing the situation has been her downfall before, and it certainly will be again.
Rushing to do what she says, Alex presses the button on her signal watch once, calling for the help of her sister.
It barely takes ten seconds before Supergirl lowers herself onto the sidewalk in front of them. “How can I…oh, I see.”
“Can you handle it, Supergirl?” Maggie questions. “It’s date night and—”
“Say no more.” Kara holds her hands up. “You two kids get out of here. I’ve got this all under control.”
Alex doesn’t control the cackle that comes out of her mouth as a bench is thrown at Kara, the metal wrapping around her head. That’s what she gets for talking like a chaperone at a middle school dance.
“Well, that wasn’t very polite,” Kara mutters, turning around to deal with the alien and letting the two lovebirds get on with their night.
Alex and Maggie both put their guns away as they back away from the fight, wincing as they see Kara get bellyflopped by the alien, but they’re not worried. They know that she can handle it. Kara is steadily using her heat vision to slice off part of the alien, hoping to injure it enough that it’ll stop rather than having to kill it.
“So, shall we go back to the diner?” Alex asks.
“We have vegan ice cream at home. Want to watch a movie and then head to bed for an early night?” Maggie links their fingers together, pulling Alex into her side more firmly, trying to warm herself up in the cool air. Her leather jacket might look cool but she should really invest in a warmer one now that it’s getting colder.
“Oh?” Alex smiles down at her, her eyebrows wiggling in the least sexy way possible. “Early night, huh?”
Maggie shrugs. “Yeah, it’s been quite a night. Maybe we should…sleep.”
“In your dreams, Sawyer,” Alex says, bumping her hip into Maggie’s as they walk.
Maggie leans into her side a little more as they fall into step, their shoes tapping against the ground in a steady, soothing rhythm, a nice sound to compliment the comfortable silence they’ve fallen into. A silence that is broken by the sad hum that Alex lets out as they walk past the diner they were in earlier. The one that they didn’t actually get to eat in.
Maggie sighs but smiles at her nonetheless, her dimples coming out in full force. “You still want a burger, don’t you?”
Alex looks a little guilty as she winces. “Yeah, kind of a lot, actually.”
“Fine, but I get to pick the movie when we get home.”
“Babe, if you think I care about that particular activity when we get home, you’re sadly mistaken.”
“Touché.”

This writer needs no introduction. She's been keeping eyeballs glued to AO3 since the Halcyon days when the show was still good and Alex was still Alex. Behold the origin story of the Sanvers fandom's very own @performativezippers!
Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started writing fic? Have you written for other fandoms? What are your favorite tropes? I've talked about this before, but I found fic because of research I was doing in grad school. I was studying a fan advocacy group about queer representation on Glee (bleak times!) but the group folded before I had everything I needed. I had to produce a publishable paper by the end of the semester, and fanfic was the closest pivot I could make to use the research I'd already done. So I started studying Glee fanfic, and went down a rabbit hole of canon vs noncanon representation in fanfic and what that means for queer imaginations, basically (one of my papers was called "Faberry is Love, Pass it On," and another was "Write Your Own God Damned Stories," good fucking times). And then later I was like...you know what, there's a formula to successful fanfics, and now that I know it, could I do it? What if I wrote something as a test? And oops that was in like 2013!
I originally wrote for Rizzoli and Isles, then for Sanvers, now also for Kacy (ncis hawaii).
In terms of tropes, I'm a sucker for a good friends-to-lovers slow burn arc. That's *chef's kiss* when it's done just right. What were your inspirations for this particular story? What was it about this/these ships that grabbed you?
Not to remind people of The Wars, but if you don't mind remembering, back when Sanvers was broken up (I'M SORRY), they said it was because Alex wanted a kid. Now, I thought that was stupid, because lord knows I fucking love Alexandra Danvers with all my heart but she was definitely not a parent of the year candidate in any way. I don't remember how it happened, but to get through our pain, some of us were joking about like, "just give her a dog and dress it up like a baby" and then I was thinking, "hmm, Alex would probably want like, a big ass predator for a child" and then somehow, probably in a fever dream, it became Make Alex's Child a Velociraptor. So it's actually a direct response to canon, which is weird because it's about a dinosaur and also Kara isn't in it, but there you have it.
This ship (Sanvers) grabbed me in a chokehold from day one. I had started watching Supergirl in season one because I like superhero stuff and I like ladies, and I crushed on Alex hard from the beginning. And then Maggie showed up for season two, and it was...fucking magic. I didn't know what was going to happen, I wasn't on the spoiler internet yet, so I watched it with baited breath. So often when you see two women characters with that kind of chemistry, you're screaming at the TV "YOU GUYS, THAT'S GAY" but it never happens. And this time it did. I yelled, "Alex, that's gay," and Maggie said, "Damn Alex, that's pretty gay," and then Alex said, "Fuck, you guys, I'm gay" and then THEY KISSED. I couldn't believe it.
And Alex's coming out speech was the most me-like thing I had ever seen on television, hands down. Has the time spent away from your story changed your outlook or approach to any of the storylines or themes? Have you had any new inspirations or breakthroughs/revelations in the meantime?
I'm a much better writer than I was when I started this fic. I've learned so much, from line-level work to how to write a plot and everything between. I still really love the worldbuilding I did originally, and the character of Gertrude the Dinosaur, and most of the large-scale choices I made for the ship and the tension. What's interesting about this fic is that it's the only thing I ever outlined, and it's the only thing I never finished. Not a coincidence! If I know what's happening, I get both bored and confined, and it doesn't work for me. The trick was to wait so long that I straight up forgot what was in the outline. I literally haven't reopened that word document, and I won't until my draft is finished. Maybe I'll find some gems in there that I want to work in, but I learned my lesson! No outlines! No thinking too far ahead!! That way lies madness (and unfinished fics). Any advice for new or aspiring fic writers?
Write what you want to read. Honestly, that's it. When I'm sad, I read my own stuff. When I want to be delighted, I read my own stuff. It's really easy to get hung up on what other people say or want to see, how many comments or kudos you get (I'm very guilty of this!) but ultimately, write something that, when you want comfort, you can read and go, "oh yeah, that's the good shit right there." Maybe that's fluff, maybe smut, maybe 100k of bloody torture--doesn't matter. Write what you want to read.
(But please, for the love of lesbian jesus, my actual advice is to put the dialogue tag on the same line as the dialogue. Please!) If you were going to promote this fic with a single line, what would it be?
Alex's child doesn't like Maggie, which is difficult because Alex is in love with Maggie and also the child is a velociraptor. If you’ve already posted some of your work, please provide a link.
You can find the fic here, but I haven't posted the edited versions of the existing chapters yet, so I honestly recommend not diving in until I've posted the first of the new chapters (chapter 10): https://archiveofourown.org/works/13799136/chapters/31724760
"Thanks, Zipps!"

20 questions for fic writers
Thanks for the tag, @lilolilyr!
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
135 fics total!
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count?
2,436,430 words (jfc hahah)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Ever? Listing them in vague order of when I started writing for them: Supergirl, Wynonna Earp, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Grace and Frankie, This Way Up, Once Upon a Time, Madre Solo hay Dos (just on Tumblr), Abbott Elementary, Hacks, and Julia
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
ALL of them are Supergirl from back in the early-ish days of the show when it was a pretty massive (by femslash standards, I suppose) and very active fandom! It's actually so interesting seeing how absolutely nothing I've written in more than half a decade even shows up, since I've largely switched to smaller fandoms since then.
But the top 5 fics by kudos are:
Stronger Together, a collection of one-shots for various Supergirl ships (with a few gen fics mixed in), which has nearly 5k kudos (WILD to me as someone now in a fandom with maybe 25 people total haha)
Welcome to the Gayborhood, my first ever fic, a looong Sanvers and Supercorp professor AU that still keeps the alien/supernatural elements of canon
6,500 miles away...but getting closer, a Sanvers epistolary fic that my wife and I actually co-wrote and posted 1 letter/email per day every day for many months
Noise Complaint, a Sanvers next-door neighbor AU that, hilariously, given its placement in the top 5 here, is what catalyzed a series of events that led to me very much leaving the fandom (and fandom writ large for nearly a year)
Supercat Sanvers 2020, a Sanvers and Supercat political AU that was maybe one of the last long-form works I wrote before moving out of DC!
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I really try to! Sometimes if it's from a person I know well, I end up responding via DMs, esp if there are questions about what comes next, plotting elements, etc., that I don't necessary want everyone to see while the fic is still being posted, but mostly I try to respond on AO3. I've gotten a bit worse in the past few years just because I'll manage to eke out a bit of time to write, which puts me behind on my work, and then I don't leave myself time to respond, and by the time I DO have time, it feels awkwardly late to do so. But even if I don't respond, I absolutely love/cherish/adore/etc. every single kind comment I've ever been given <3
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Forgoten, but not Gone - a Sanvers amnesia AU set post-breakup that's heavy on the angst with a rather ambiguous ending. I got talked into writing a part 2 that resolves the angst haha, but taken on it's own it's definitely my angstiest ending!
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Huh idk! Most of my fics end on fairly happy, if a bit open, endings. I'm not a big fan of having all the loose ends tied up, and I realllyyyy don't do the marriage/2 kids/white picket fence epilogue, so I guess maybe the political AU has to be up there because it actually envisions a world where a queer woman wins the presidency on a progressive platform, and that feels rather utopian 🙃
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Not in a while, though I used to back in the days, like super vitriolic shit (big fandoms with too-big emotions, man... which has really kept me away maybe forever from those kinds of fandoms!)
9. Do you write smut?
Haha very much so. I've written and posted before about why, but I really believe there's so much interesting character work and exploration that can be done by exploring characters' pleasures, their desires (both thwarted and realized), their fantasies, etc. Obviously smut isn't the only way to do this, but fanfic feels like one of the few venues where it's a real possibility!
10. Do you write crossovers?
Nah, not really. I've written a handful of bring characters x and y into the universe of another show fics, but that feels mostly different. Every so often I'll borrow vague character outlines for tertiary characters in other fics just to see if folks recognize them (had Grace Hanson as a grumpy background character in a Sanvers fic set at PT for instance hah)
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Once or twice, but we got them taken down
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yeah, one of my SG fics was translated into Russian! I'm not sure if it's still up (tbh I can't recall which one; it's been a long time!) I've also had a couple podfics now made of my fics, one of which I still need to go listen to when I get the time!!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yeah! The long-form Sanvers epistolary fic my wife and I co-wrote together, and a group of Supercat authors got together and did a delightfully chaotic round robin, each writing one sentence, then setting a timer for the next person to write the next sentence, etc., until we had Intergalactic Standard Cuddling
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Oh man, I really don't know that I have a favorite! I really appreciate what various ships can offer me at different times - there are certain themes that make sense to explore with one pairing but not at all with another, or certain AUs that work in one fandom but not really in another. Basically, if a show is giving me multiple female characters who interact in canon in ways that go beyond existing near each other, I'm intrigued, and if these characters actually get depth and complexity, I'm probably in! There are, however, some ships that I might not end up feeling fannish/creative about even though I love them as ships (I talked a lot to @trying-to-get-somewhere-real about this recently, actually!), so it's hard to name a favorite when the metrics get all wonky!
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
I don't want to say never, but I have a Cat-centric fic that'll end on Supercat that just has a lot of angst that coincided with a period of unexpected loss and grief in my own life in ways that have made it really hard to get back into even now (it just feels so...enmeshed with that moment, even though the timing was utterly coincidental)
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I do a good job with dialogue and getting characters' voices down - I'm really into the character side of things (which is also what gets me invested fannishly in shows! I want a show that cares about developing their characters first and foremost vs. a show where plot takes priority)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Certain kinds of action scenes haha - also I tire easily of writing things that feel repetitive to things I've done/written before (this was more of an issue when I took prompts)
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Largely, this isn't something I've had to deal with much outside of maybe a few phrases and sentences from multilingual characters. I've talked before about how it was actually the language/translation barrier that kept me from writing for Madre Solo hay Dos. I don't speak Spanish, and getting a show entirely via the Netflix-provided translations meant 1) I was fairly certain there were some word choice/dialect peculiarities I was missing, and 2) I couldn't catch the rhythms of their speech, the cadence of their voices at least in ways that corresponded to the specific words. For me, voice matters so much, and it really felt like a barrier to not have access to the source language because I felt like I couldn't do these two women justice!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Supergirl
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Oh I've answered this elsewhere with 2-3 works, and tbh I don't think it's changed since then! I'm actually far more interested in others' favorite fics of mine because it's so interesting to think about the question of *what* sticks with a person from yours (it's often so idiosyncratic!!)
I'm getting to this pretty late, so I won't tag anyone, assuming many people already have been, but if ya see this and want to participate, feel free to give me a tag! I always love seeing people talk about their own writing :)

What are some Director Sanvers/genderfluid!Lucy facts that you havent brought up a lot, but you still headcanon? Are there things you want to talk about but arent sure if its the right time/place?
There's additional things I think would be fun to explore, or things I'm interested in as one-offs (and I'll post some if I manage to gather them together) but here are some general ideas I haven't really put anywhere:
Bi Lucy/Leon! I don't think I've written about it explicitly but I think there's an extra layer there along with genderfluidity and polyamory, with people wanting to put her in 'this-or-that' boxes. Race and religion could also be in there, and I think it's all compelling when considering a Lucy arc of her trying to find her place and her own sense of self that isn't just what others have told her she is. I keep thinking it needs to be its own thing so I've been saving it rather than sprinkling it in more and now I realize I didn't have to do that.
Trans!Maggie: as a kid, before she transitioned, she liked having hoodies that she could tie around her waist so it was kinda like a skirt. She doesn't do that now with the leather jackets, but it's still a nice sort of security blanket memory.
Nb!Alex: In a little lighthearted reassurance convo with Maggie soon after Alex comes out as nb, part of Maggie's response is "We should be who we are, right?" "But what about..." "We'll workshop the rest. Kiss the people we wanna kiss... Or maybe badass secret agents, nerdy scientists, partners in crime... Because my feelings haven't changed at all, Danvers. I still wanna kiss you." "Really?" "Really really."
Director Sanvers: Especially at the start, it's a lot of unpacking and (un)learning stuff as being with new people+in a poly relationship brings up trauma and (internalized) prejudice and assumptions and shame they didn't realize that were (still) present. They do a lot of work on themselves and how to manage those things to be able to be in fulfilling relationships (and to have happier lives generally!). I didn't really figure out how to touch on this meaningfully but I definitely think that with the way I've written them, they have to work on things so their relationships work as well as they do.
Community and pride (and collective histories) end up being really important too - I haven't written in lots of other superfriends etc (trying to keep my stuff small and more characters often means bigger) but they're there!
In a world where they're allowed to be in a parade, they think riding their bikes in Pride would be really cool.
Bonus: the three of them start putting towels down on top of the sheets for bed activities because changing sheets on a massive bed is a pain.

Director Sanvers for the ship dualities - i know those asks are for couples and not three people though, so only if you want to - maybe there's a third option you wanna add to all those dualities, or maybe two of them fit that duality to a t while the third one just looks on and giggles, who knows!
send me a ship who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunter
Going different from the werewolf au I had ages ago, and with your more traditional werewolves, and specifically werewolves as a metaphor for queerness and the fear that comes with the realizing and the hiding and all that.
Maggie has been a werewolf most of her life, after being attacked in a cornfield as a kid.
Alex was recently turned and is struggling with it.
Lucy is a hunter from a long-standing family (who might be hiding her own secret)
who’s the mermaid and who’s the fisherman
Maggie is the fisherman, very blue collar, leaves Nebraska and goes as far as she can from the farm
Lucy is the mermaid. Her father is head of the king's guard and Is Not supposed to interact with anybody connected to the surface.
Alex is a selkie who lives on the coast. She knows both of them in her different worlds, then one day, those worlds collide
who’s the witch and who’s the familiar
I mean, witch Lucy, right? Clearly
Alex is the familiar, a small cat.
Maggie runs the shop Lucy gets her herbs and spices from.
who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addict
Maggie and Lucy, married, own a run a small coffee shop.
Alex is a PhD candidate who lives on their coffee and pastries
who’s the professor and who’s the TA
Dr. Dr. Danvers with her two TAs for the massive Biology 101 class she's forced to teach
who’s the knight and who’s the prince(ss)
Okay, listen, princess Lucy, knight Alex, stable hand Maggie
Some high-ranked noble stages a coup and tries to kill all of Lucy's family, Alex and Maggie get her out and go on a journey through the country in search of safety and the rumors that Lucy's long dead sister is, in fact, not dead
who’s the teacher and who’s the single parent
Single parent Lucy, just moved to town on what she plans to be her last duty station in the Army
Middle school science teacher Maggie and her roommate Alex who dies every time Maggie comes home and bitches about her new student's mother
who’s the writer and who’s the editor
Editor Alex Danvers doesn't know why she's been moved to children's books and forced to work on the work of prominent, and elusive author M. Sawyer. At least her friend, Lucy Lane, is the illustrator for the books.

♻️ and 🤡 for the fic writer asks, please! And a ❤️ as well!
♻️A scrapped idea for your current WIP
hmmm I'm not sure if i've scrapped anything from Ultimatum yet because it's still relatively early days. But i was hoping to find a way to work Jesse and Heather in as contestants, but it wasn't working; they're better as hosts, even though it means a little less Jesse in the story than the rest of the ohana. I was wondering if Jane should host to be all Mama Bear about it (and because Vanessa actually hosts the straight version IRL) but I needed to have my Jane be more present for the ladies. And she's already so romantically confused in the canon, that I thought it would be more fun to have her with Charlie and Joe. I also considered having her arrive with Daniel, but I thought that was pushing her characterization too far because she'd never do that to her kids.
🤡How many Wips are you actively working on?
ONLY TWO, are you guys proud of me???
The Ultimatum (Kacy)
My Sanvers big bang with @roadien60 that i am SO EXCITED for
Unless you count books, in which no one cares but have 2 in progress right now 😬

This one is from NerdsbianHokie's "Ms. Maggie" series, specifically "astronauts and dinosaurs" but is only a reference to the author's note at the end.
@nerdsbianhokie, I cleaned this up a bit, redid the background from when you've seen this last.
I have something else that needs a question answered. Whether Maggie dressed up with her that year too, or if Alex did her best impression of "if Maggie was a dinosaur"? 😶
Plug for the parent story, "Ms. Maggie" too. It's ridiculous how good this is.

Sneak Peek of Life As We Know It by flyingpotstickers (embracedself): A Sanvers and SuperCorp tale.
--
“Violet!” Maggie came closer to the staircase. She looked under it, and noticed a shaky, small, knob in the wall. She tugged on it, ducking down under the stairs. “Violet, are you in here?” she asked, gesturing with one hand behind her to have Nolan follow her. Never go in blind. It was a lesson that she’d learned from her first day on the police academy team, and she tried to remember it each day.
“Help!” A small voice shouted. “‘M stuck.”
Nolan whistled low. “Sawyer?” But Maggie was already diving in, army crawling towards the voice. “Sawyer, wait for backup!”
Shaking her head, Maggie shouted back, “There is a kid under here.” it was obvious that she wasn’t going to be swayed into inaction. “Violet, can you shout really loudly? I’m gonna get you, but first I have to find you.”
“Ahhhhh!!!!!!” The child shouted. “There are spiders!”
“I’m coming. Just a second,” Maggie promised. As soon as she saw a toddler sized foot, Maggie yanked. “I promise, spiders are scared of me.” Maggie said as Violet screamed. Maggie clutched the toddler tight. “Hang on.”

late night laundry
also on ao3
sanvers, g, 500+ word count
———
Alex’s sleep is permeated by sporadic bouts of her girlfriend shuffling.
She opens one eye to see Maggie moving around the room with an armful of laundry. “Mags it is one am.”
“I know, babe,” Maggie replies, sticking her head in their shared closet. “I’m almost done here, sorry for waking you up.”
Alex groans, flipping an arm over her face so that the overhead light doesn’t make her feel disoriented. She usually is a late night person but after the long evening that she had at the DEO she wants nothing more than to sleep. With her girlfriend. Preferably without the lights on. “No, it’s not that. Just- come here? Leave the laundry for the morning.”
“It is morning though,” Maggie retorts. But a smile is spreading across her face, and Alex can feel her own lips quirk at the playfulness in her tone. She doesn’t even have to glance over to the closet to see Maggie’s indented dimples.
Alex reaches behind her head to grab a pillow. Before either of them have a chance to blink Alex is hurling the projectile at Maggie. Maggie’s indignated squawk is quickly followed by a short pillow fight and it is not until Alex is not sleepy anymore but straddling Maggie on the floor by their bedroom door that they remember what it was all for.
“I know you’re stressed about tomorrow and that annual cop exam you have to prepare for, but Maggie, you have to rest. You need all the sleep you can get, store that energy for something other than chores.” Alex leans down, kisses the tip of Maggie’s nose. Maggie’s eyes well up with tears, and Alex is grateful that they have been together long enough for her to understand that Maggie is just being (good) emotional over someone taking care of her, or else she would be freaking out over making Maggie cry. “I can put the clothes away later okay? Just come to bed.”
Maggie nods, sniffling like a little kid and swiping her nose on the back of her hand. It is so uncommon for “the Maggie Sawyer of National City” to be crying over some routine exam but what the public does not know is that Maggie strives even harder than Alex to achieve and maintain perfection. It’s actually a good thing that that is the case because that means Alex is the soothing one for once, instead of constantly running around trying to get things done. Their continual routine of checks and balances and taking the lead of calming the other down makes them both eventually a more stable, level-headed, and confident individual.
This makes them the best couple, at least in Alex’s eyes. This is what makes her so sure that she had made the right decision of pushing Maggie to be her first girlfriend, even when Maggie was not sure herself that they would last.
And when Maggie wraps her arms around Alex’s neck and tangles delicate but shaking fingers into her hair to pull Alex down for a kiss, Alex is even more certain.
(They didn’t end up getting much sleep in the end and Alex cursed the next morning when she tripped over Maggie’s bra on her way to the bathroom, but at least it was all worth it. When the scores were released, they celebrated. Hard.
Perfect, as usual.)

AO3 Q&A
Just realized that I’m almost at 100 fics on AO3. Then I realized I’ve actually already crossed that with my anonymous works, abandoned fics and ones that have be deleted. So I decided to celebrate by doing a little fic Q&A for fun.
Under the cut
What is your first fic:
My first fic was a Rumbelle fic titled “A Not So Beauty and Beast”. It has now since been deleted and I only remember that is was a work office AU. I vaguely remember a chapter where Belle had to get a needle, but nothing else.
2. How did you start writing fics:
I have always had stories going on in my head ever since I was a kid. I did write some stories for school projects and enjoyed doing so but never wrote for fun. When I got into TV my best friends introduced me to the world of fanfics and I started reading some. I remember having a sleepover at my friends’ house in high school. They were talking about how they wrote fanfictions and suddenly I had the courage to start writing my own. That same night I stared writing “A not so Beauty and Beast”. From there the rest has been history.
3. Do you respond to comments:
I’m trying to get better and respond to more. But sometimes I don’t now how to respond to comments. I always appreciate comments though as I often get very few on my fics.
4. Do you write crossovers:
No, though I did write an Avalance fic story with the Emma & Lily storyline for OUAT (When You're Around, Things are Brighter)
5. Have you ever received hate comments on a fic:
Yes. On one of my smutty fics a person left a comment that I was deranged for writing a specific kink. I shrugged the comment off because the fic was clearly labeled and the person didn’t have to click on the fic.
The only time a comment really bothered me was really early on in my writing. This was on another of my deleted fics. It was titled “How Seagulls Fly” and it was a CaptainSwan fanfiction. Someone left a comment critiquing why I was including flashbacks that had nothing to do with the story. I was really sensitive to critiques as I was still new to posting fics and took the comment a bit too personally.
6. Do you write smut:
Yes. I have written some pretty kinky stuff too. Most are posted anonymously because one of my best friends stalks my AO3 account and I’d die if she saw them.
7. First fandom you wrote for:
Once Upon A Time. Unfortunately I deleted most of my OG fics because I was embarrassed with how bad they were written. I wish I hadn’t now. I think it’d be amusing to look back on them.
8. Favourite fic you’ve written:
Oh, so many. So many of my stories have such meaning to me and I love going back to read them. I usually go back to read more recent fics as they consume my mind the most.
For my favourites of my fics I’ll pick: “The Things We Don’t Talk About” (X-Men, Cherik), “The Tutor” (OUAT, Rumbelle), “By the Water’s Edge” (OFMD, BlackBonnet). “Drawn On My Skin” (Supergirl, Sanvers) is pretty good as well. I’m kind of obsessed with how well I wrote “Soulmates, Load of Bullshit” (OFMD, Steddy Hands).
For personal stories I’d have to say: “My Loki Verse” (series), “The Path That Leads Us Home” (Marvel/X-men, Maximoff feels). “Fallen Star” (Marvel, TaserTrickster) is also really meaningful to me. When I do go back to read it, I do find it a bit lacking. But it's clear to me that while I was writing it I was dealing with my own grief over a loss in my life.
9. Most poplar fic:
“An Exitance Unlike Our Own.” (18,837 Hits, 911 Kudos, 86 Comments)
I think this fic just hit a very niche ship (Agent Reign) with popular tropes (fake dating, undercover, living together) and blew up. It’s by far my most popular fic, no other pales in comparison. Even the fics I think are better.
I think “Soulmates, Load of Bullshit” (OFMD, Steddy Hands) has the most comments on one chapter though (36). That one blew up a bit and I was so proud because I liked that one so much. I thought I did a really good job with it.
10. What category do most of your fics fall under?
Alternate universe.
I love putting my characters into different scenarios and spinning them around in my mind. I like making them kiss like they’re toys I’m playing with. It’s fun.
11. Do you read your own fics:
Yes, and yes. I actually love rereading my own fics. It makes me so happy to go back and read them and to reread comments.
12. What is your writing process:
Usually an idea hits me and I’ll jot down in a Google doc or Word document. Funny enough the best time in which I’m writing the most, or the most inspired is when I’m in my bed before I go to sleep. So I’m usually typing the fic in my phone while lying sideways. I type so fast I end up with a lot of typos so I have to go back and edit everything. But I really like the whole process of editing. This very flawed system is what works best for me.
13. Is there a fic or idea for a fic that you've abandoned?
Most definitely. I’ve actually had quite a few. Recently I actually wrote a whole fic out only to never post it and throw it away because I ended up not liking it. I’ve been tying to just have fun with my writing and not care so much about posting or having people comment. I want my writing to be something I enjoy.
14. Is there a fic you wish had gotten more attention?
Yes, so many. Like all of them. For now I’ll go with “By The Water’s Edge” (OFMD, BlackBonnet)
15. What ships have you written the most for:
I’m almost embarrassed to see that Aziraphale/Crowley (Good Omens) have topped my list (9) as they only started consuming my thoughts within this past month. Most of their stories are one-shots. (see Amber Eyes and a Wicked Smile). I have more stories in the works for them as well.
My next top ships are what I expected. I have Belle/Rumplestiltskin | Mr. Gold (7), Alex Danvers/Maggie Sawyer (7), Sara Lance/Ava Sharpe (7), Evil Queen | Regina Mills/Robin Hood (6)
If I added my anonymous fics to this, Blackbeard | Edward Teach/Stede Bonnet would probably be up there as well.
16. What fandoms do you write for:
I’m kind of actually proud to see that OUAT still remains the top fandom I’ve written for (19). This is followed by Supergirl (12), Marvel (11), DC's Legends of Tomorrow (10), and Good Omens (9)
17. What's your longest story:
“The Princess and the Warrior” (OUAT, RedWarrior) was up there for the longest time at 33,567 words. But I passed it with two Rumbelle fics, “The Union” (40,348 words) and “Finding You” in first place at 59,158 words. “Dance With Me” (Good Omens, Crowley/Aziraphale) is shaping up to be a competitor as I’m still currently updating it. Right now it’s in second at 41,182 words.
18. What do you hope to achieve with your fics:
I hope to maintain F/F as the main dynamic I write about as F/F fics are severely lacking (currently I'm at 36) . However I strive to continue writing whatever makes me happy, and to continue writing things for my own fun.

Art and intro by @thelxiope1. Thanks, pal! (,:
Last but not least! It is an honor to do the mini-view intro for our esteemed and gifted event organizer, the one, the only: @smarterinabsentia. You know her mostly as a writer of incredibly rich and detailed Sanvers fics filled with cinematic drama, action, passion, history, science, aliens, magic, music, and a vast knowledge of all things Super. She is also a talented artist and a superb beta reader. But today she shares her thoughts on writing and finishing one of her epic and ambitious works.
Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started writing fic? Have you written for other fandoms? What are your favorite tropes?
Unless you count an Alien sequel as a kid, I really didn’t start writing fic until Sanvers. I’m a lifelong DC fan and read Maggie’s first appearance right off the stands, so I was excited to finally get a version of the character who wasn’t a name drop or a blip in an animated series. What I didn't expect was THAT chemistry and THAT coming out arc, and being able to witness the S shield become so indelibly associated with queerness it made my heart sing. So when Maggie walked out of Alex’s apartment for the last time, it was both a devastating loss of rep and the start of a careless and very painful dismantling of the world they’d built in Season 2. I’d been lurking on A03 and, as so many of these fic origin stories go, I thought, “I’ll just write one chapter. What could possibly go wrong?!"
For as much as I hate Alex’s S3 body snatching and the reasons for the breakup, I’m a sucker for the reluctant parent trope. I do like to put Maggie with kids, not as self-sacrificing mother figure, but someone who treats them very much the way she would an equal. This backfires on her sometimes, but counterintuitively makes her a better parent than Alex.
What were your inspirations for this particular story? What was it about this/these ships that grabbed you?
I’ve always been fascinated by the Soviet side of the Space Race and how they achieved so much on fewer resources--not to mention putting a woman in orbit two decades before the U.S. The U.S. had its glamorous flyboys, but the Soviets had women cosmonauts, not to mention soldiers and pilots and snipers, and something like 42 percent of doctors during World War II—a number that rose to 70% in the 1960s.
I’d just finished Svetlana Alexievich’s Unwomanly Face of War, an oral history of the women who'd fought on the Eastern front, and while I didn't expect to encounter any out lesbians in those interviews, the dearth of queerness felt pronounced. I started thinking about who Alex and Maggie might have been in that war, and soon enough, they were fleeing the Germans on a boat on the Moskva river. This is probably nothing new to folks writing historical AUs, but being new to fic at the time, it was eerie just how snugly those characters slotted into the tapestry of Soviet history, from Maggie’s navigating the power shifts in the NKVD/KGB to Alex strugging under the chokehold of Lysenkoism. Every character fit, and every character became this deep-dive learning experience about the era/s.
Has the time spent away from your story changed your outlook or approach to any of the storylines or themes? Have you had any new inspirations or breakthroughs/revelations in the meantime?
I’ve had some more insights into the characters, especially Jami, who surprised me, and there was a retcon I had to do with a reveal in the dialogue, something I realized was a big moment I should have saved for … the big moment (so I hope no one notices, haha!) And this is probably because I use world building as a means of procrastination, but I’m in this place right now where I’m as excited about the world I’ve set up at the end of the fic as I am about the fic itself.
Any advice for new or aspiring fic writers?
This goes back to something I wish I’d said at the Sanvers research panel a few years back. You might hesitate to write because you think you don't know enough about a particular subject, but that desire is often a signal that you know more than you’re giving yourself credit for. Once you get started, you'll discover you've gotten a lot right out of a mix of prior knowledge and spooky action at a distance. So absolutely do do the research and be respectful of the material, but don’t let a perceived lack of knowledge put you off from getting started. What turns out to be accurate in those first drafts will feel like magic, but what you have to correct in your seconds and thirds will stick and be the best kind of learning experience.
If you were going to promote this fic with a single line, what would it be?
Lesbians live and so does Laika.
Link to the story if you have one.

sanvers helping queer teens anon here, what abt a hispanic gay for girls enby (ik this is rly weirdly specific)nw/ rly conservative parents and just nneding to cry and let it out w/ sanvers and them comforting them
Half the time that Adrian texts Maggie, it’s memes and cute dogs and selfies of him with said cute dogs.
The other quarter, it’s life updates and checking in on how she’s doing.
The last quarter, it’s asking if he can bring wayward teens he finds over to his lesbian mamas’ apartment for dinner, for coffee, for an emergency crisis.
This afternoon, his text is about a sophomore in his school.
They’re really sweet and they just transferred to my school and they’ve got this massive crush on this junior girl and I totally ship it and more to the point their parents are jerksssssssssssssssssssssssssssss so can they come over tonight and be parented by the biggest homos I know I’ll bake that batch of brownies that you know Alex will make all those sex noises for??
You sent this to me, Adrian. This isn’t Maggie’s phone, Adrian. You did that last crack about the brownies and sent it to me on purpose, didn’t you Adrian.
…. hi Alex. We on for tonight?
Bring them and your brownies. We may or may not take the brownies and the kid and let you stay out in the hallway.
Perfect, see you then!
Alex laughs to herself, wondering when, exactly, she became a mom.
She calls Maggie to let her know that they’ll have company tonight.
She watches, that night, the kid’s face – Cass, their name is – as they watch the enthusiasm and deep, unrestrained love that Maggie and Adrian bear hug with.
“They’ll be done in with that in about five hours,” Alex offers her hand out to Cass. They giggle nervously, and Alex leans in conspiratorially. “You wanna steal these brownies and run? Adrian said he’d bring the things over, and he told us he was bringing you, obviously, so I said ‘well maybe Cass and I could just grab the brownies and go, can they run fast?’ and he was like, ‘yeah, they do, they’re on our track team’, so I’m just saying, if you wanna tackle him for the brownies, I can totally take my wife.”
Alex hopes her rambling is making Cass feel less uncomfortable, less awkward and terrified; if the look on their face is any indication whenever Alex uses their pronouns, Alex is creating the effect she wanted to.
Maggie and Adrian finally stop hugging, and Adrian latches himself onto Alex next.
It’s not until halfway through the pizza and fries and garlic bread - ‘the dinner of champions’, Adrian proclaims - that Cass really starts saying anything beyond ‘pre-calculus is awesome’ and ‘my English teacher is the worst.’
Because they pay close attention when Maggie casually mentions growing up in a small town where everyone knew everyone’s business, and when Adrian mentions the last family barbeque where his mom got into a massive fight with his dad’s brother over his refusal to respect Adrian’s pronouns in the supposed name of Jesus.
“It. Was. Awesome,” Adrian concludes with satisfied hands behind his head.
“Was your dad mad at your mom, though? For yelling at his brother?” Cass asks, and Adrian shakes his head vehemently.
“No no no, that was the best part. When Dad got there, and we told him what happened, he was just pissed off that Mami got to tell off my uncle and not him. Like I said: awesome.”
“You’re really lucky. With your parents. Both sets, it looks like.”
“I know,” Adrian sobers, reaching for Alex’s wine before she lightly smacks his hand out of the way.
Cass giggles at their intimate antics, and they assess safety levels quickly. Whether anyone will be mad that they ruin the dinner party just because they need to vent; whether Adrian won’t be their friend anymore at school, or whether Alex and Maggie will regret welcoming them into their home.
They think it seems safe. The way Adrian leans across the table to squeeze Maggie’s knee. The way Alex kisses Maggie’s cheek, and Maggie kisses hers right back.
The way Adrian pretends to be grossed out, but winks at Cass happily even as he does so.
“I wish I had parents who love me like yours do,” they pipe up, and no one misses a beat.
No one tells them that ‘of course your parents love you, they’re just set in their ways’ or ‘they’ll accept you even if they don’t accept other people because you’re their kid’ or ‘why is it so important to tell them? you’ll be out of their house in a couple years anyway.’
No one says anything like that. They just turn, and nod, and wait for them to continue.
“Like, it’s frustrating. Because there’s Jesus Catholics, who are all hippy and like, love everyone for the sake of loving everyone because that’s what Jesus was all about. And there are Old Testament Catholics, who are like, ‘smite this and smite that’ and that’s my parents, and they voted for the supervillain in the White House and they don’t understand that he hates us and everything he stands for hates us, and he especially hates me, because I’m brown and I’m trans and I love women in a way he’ll never understand.”
“You mean you respect them and all that? What? Whomst?” Adrian puts his hand on his heart in faux shock, and Cass smiles like maybe everyone at this table actually, truly gets it.
Which is exactly what makes them sob.
Alex is on her feet first, pulling out her chair and shifting so she’s kneeling tall by Cass’s seat. “Okay?” she asks with outstretched arms, and Cass lets themself sink into Alex, grasping at her henley as they sob like they haven’t let themself sob in far too long.
Maggie holds Adrian’s hand and they both put their heads down, waiting, witnessing, holding space for Cass’s tears and Alex’s whispers of comfort and belief.
“I’m sorry,” Cass gasps through their tears.
“No.”
“Absolutely nothing to be sorry for.”
“You’re fine, you’re fine, you know how many times I’ve done this at this very table?”
“All three of us, really.”
“This is apparently where we all have our breakdowns. You’re in good company.”
Their soft antics get Cass to laugh. To start believing that maybe their blood family isn’t the only family they’ll ever have.
That maybe, they can make their own.
And maybe, that starts tonight.
