Kadomatsu est un vendeur de soupe de riz au physique d’ours, nourri à la patate rabougrie. Avant la capitulation du Japon, il a fait la guerre sous les ordres de l’élégant Tokutaro. A jamais entre ces deux-là, c’est à la bringue, à la vie à la mort. Tout autour d’eux, Tokyo est en ruines et les Américains font désormais la loi. Kadomatsu et Tokutaro racontent le choc des cultures, le rapport entre vainqueur et vaincu, l’honneur perdu des hommes et la fierté intacte des femmes subissant les assauts des GI’s. Grand Prix de la Japan Cartoonist Association, Sansuke Yamada dessine avec humour, truculence et sensualité la reconstruction de la société nippone au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le mangaka nous dit dans sa série Sengo comment, quand le monde s’écroule autour de nous, demeurer du côté des vivants.

On y suit la vie aux quotidiens de japonais apres la défaite de la seconde guerre mondiale. Yoshimoto will participate in a book signing and a live painting event from January 30-February 2, 2020. “Sengo”, l'après-guerre de Sansuke Yamada

Dans le Tokyo affamé de 1945, une rixe éclate devant l’étal d’un marchand de soupe. Quand celui-ci intervient, il reconnaît un ancien soldat dont il a été le chef. Kawashima, alcoolique et désabusé, prie l’ex-troufion de repartir dans sa campagne, mais Kadomatsu, sans famille, s’enracine. Depuis la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, cet ours mal léché, un peu simplet mais loyal, doit se résigner à la défaite et trouver un nouveau sens à sa vie.
