Kologbo - Get Rich Quick feat. Newen Afrobeat & Les Freres Smith

February 6th, it's Kologbo day at Paris DJs - just like every other 6th of the month we're releasing a brand new song from Fela Kuti Afrika 70's tenor guitar player! This one is called "Get Rich Quick" and features the horn section and percussion player from French band Les Frères Smith, along with backing vocals from Chilean band Newen Afrobeat's quatuor of singers. No Tony Allen here, Kologbo plays the drums himself, along with the guitar solos, tenor guitar, rhythm guitar, bass and congas!!

Recorded and produced by Grant Phabao at the Paris DJs studio, "Get Rich Quick" is not an ode to Las Vegas. "Get Rick Quick is a problem of the world, that's why I sing it. Everybody wants to get rich quick and forget his brother, forget about famine, forget about all necessary things. I can see that all over the world", says Kologbo, adding that "it's Afrobeat mixed with my kind of highlife-funk-jazz-blues mix-mash fusion of elements, you can hear it all in my music".

Fela Kuti had this song called "Water No Get Enemy", on his 1975 album "Expensive Shit" with the Afrika 70 band. Its title meant something like "Nobody hates something as useful as water". 43 years later, Fela's guitarist Kologbo, who played on nearly all of Fela's 1970s records (including this 1975 one), is paying a kind of tribute to that song and his former bandleader, with "Music No Get Enemy", featuring musicians from European afrobeat bands Monkuti (France) and World Squad (Belgium). Produced at Paris DJs by Grant Phabao, this tune navigates in a class-A laidback afrobeat comfort zone, the kind of vibe that's perfect for this month's Kologbo day!*

My father’s family comes from a small town in northern Italy, about an hour’s drive from Pontebba in Udine. We had many alpine themes decorating the house, most notably, edelweiss flowers, both framed behind glass and embroidered on fabrics. But, my favorite image from the region is that of Krampus. . It is said that long ago, in times of famine, young people from small mountain villages disguised themselves using furs made of feathers and skins and animal horns. Being so unrecognizable, they went around terrorizing the inhabitants of the nearby villages, robbing them of the provisions necessary for the winter season. After some time, the young people realized, however, that among them there was an impostor - it was a demon who, taking advantage of his real devilish face, had entered the group remaining recognizable only thanks to his hoofed goat legs. . Bishop Nicholas was then called to exorcise the disturbing presence. Having defeated the demon, every year the young men, disguised as demons, paraded along the streets of the villages, no longer to plunder but to “punish bad children”, accompanied by the figure of the bishop. . Today, there is a parade where the Krampus come accompanied by drums and torches and travel the streets of the city together with Saint Nicholas. After the parade, they are free to punish those who have sinned and “bad” children and adults. Many nationalities participate - Italian, Austrian and Slovenian - bringing together a variety of Krampus traditions. While the festival is celebrated at the beginning of December, we celebrate it around Christmas day, when the whole little family gets together. .
