My thoughts on Thomas Sanders (criticism but more of me complaining)

Something I don't see people talk about nearly enough (read: not at all) is the fact that, we are still analyzing videos that came out 4+ years ago.

It's not the "analyzing old videos" that's the problem. It's the fact there hasn't been any new content since then. It really feels like (at least to me) the fandom (once again, could be just me) is desperately picking at episodes like POF or SVS for any scraps left behind.

I started one of my fics about a year after POF came out and I remember being nervous because "This takes place immediately after putting others first, this could become really dated really fast"

Turns out I had nothing to worry about.

Lack of plot relevant content is one thing. Everything else that has resurfaced rubs salt in the wound.

Oh, and now to address the fandom itself: some of yall have an insane perspective on everything. I'm all for trying to be objective about the criticism (bc lets be real, one or two things ive seen circulating makes me scratch my head,) but blatantly defending Thomas with "he doesn't owe you anything" is so fucking WILD to me.

He's a content creator. It's his job to make content. Ofc nobody expects him to pump it out like a factory machine, and there's mental health to consider, but it is still his job to make content.

I don't even know where this ideology came from. Who sent you all down that path. Was it Thomas complaining setting a boundary over someone demanding content?

For clarification I don't think anyone should be messaging Thomas to demand content but like... come on dude.

Scalding take, Thomas SHOULD thank us for supporting him.

If he's getting burned out from creating TSS content, we as his fandom are entitled to know instead of sitting and waiting. Did you guys know we are closer to the 10 year aniversarry than we are the 5 year one?

It all sucks horribly. I still want to support him. I still want to wait and see what he does next. I still love Sanders Sides and Cartoon Therapy and My Roommate is Hades. But I feel so hypocritical to still support and follow him when all this shit is piling up. I know nobody is forcing me to stick around, but without Sanders Sides, I have nothing going on in my life. This is my only community, and I somehow managed to tie it down with two of my only hobbies with it.

Does he know a chunk of the fandom is angry and now watching his every move? He should.

Edit: oh and I saw spoilers from the patreon of what the new ep is going to be. It's not worth the wait for me personally. Lowkey I think the premise alone is weak asf but I don't know the thing they're referencing super well. Doesn't add much to this post but I wanted to bitch about that too.

My Two Cents on this whole Thomas Sanders/Sander Sides Situation as an Old Viewer

AUTHOR'S NOTE - Wow, this post turned out to be way longer than I anticipated, so here's the TL;DR if you don't want to read the whole thing. I'd still recommend to do so, but yeah. TL;DR - I think Thomas Sanders and his team are valid for taking a long time to work on stuff like the Sander Sides finale, but I think some criticisms the community has are valid too, and it's nice to see people in the Thomas Sanders community speak up about their criticisms. Alright, as I said in my previous post, I dipped out of Sander Sides about two-ish years ago, mainly because I myself was growing out of the series. With all due respect to everyone who works on the show past and present, I didn't like that episodes were starting to become more story-driven with heavy morals and deep meanings, to me, it was no longer a short light-hearted series about random everyday subject matters with comedy and skits to pace it out. But of course, that's just a me thing, it's clear that the direction Sander Sides went ended up making the series a huge success and I don't fault people for liking the series where it's at or what it's become. If you enjoy Sander Sides, that's great, more power to ya! Anywho, I don't know how or why, but on my "For You" feed, I stumbled upon a post criticizing Thomas for a recent update video he made regarding his content overall, saying he was making false promises and that they are tired of being given these false hopes every year when they never come to be. That post led me down a whole rabbit hole on Tumblr of many users criticizing Thomas on a lot of things, mainly the communication with his fans.

Admittedly, a lot of the posts I've found I have mixed feelings on; I said this in a reblog/repost (whatever it's called on this app, I'm still learning), but a lot of them feel as if they don't understand what goes into making a big project of any kind. You can check out my reblog of Rixitup's post if you want my full thoughts on that matter, but in short, speaking as someone who is a small creator who has big visions for things I want to make in the future, it can take a lot, and I mean a LOT, of time to create something to be the way you envision it. Sometimes it may take a few months, other times it can take a couple of years. I don't know Thomas himself, nor do I know what his thought process for this finale and the series as a whole is, but if he wants the finale to look a specific way, then I can understand why he and the team have been taking so much time to get this finale going. Remember, the world is still opening back up from a pandemic we went through for about three years, and especially given where Thomas and his team are located, I wouldn't be surprised if that has played a big role in halting most of the production on the finale until now.

With all of that said, however, I will say, for those who have, it's really nice to finally see some people in this community give constructive criticism regarding Thomas Sanders as a creator. When I was part of the community, I remember having all these feelings regarding Thomas' work and especially Sander Sides, including how I felt the show has become a bit too serious for my liking and how the show has become less light-hearted. But often, I'd keep my mouth shut because no one else within the community that I saw would ever give out any sort of criticisms regarding them. The only times I would do so was with friends who were into Thomas Sanders' stuff, and even then, I was often frown upon, some saying my opinion was invalid because Thomas works so hard to get this stuff out. And don't get me wrong, I genuinely believe he does! The enthusiasm he puts into his non-series videos seems legit. But it felt like in this community, you weren't allowed to criticize Thomas, Sander Sides, or anything Thomas Sanders related, like Thomas was a god who could do no wrong. That was another reason why I left the fandom, to have your voice not only be unheard but also invalidated, that hurts a lot, especially in a community that's meant to be respectful to one another.

Now in early 2023, to see a slew of people constructively criticize Thomas, Sander Sides, and other things, it feels so....nice. It feels great to know that I'm not alone in thinking or feeling certain things for many years, namely...

The Lack of Light-Hearted Comedic Episodes - Again, I think with where Sander Sides is now, this isn't an issue, but it is something older viewers like me miss a lot. Remember, Sander Sides didn't start out as this story-heavy/driven series with many plots and lore, it was originally just a fun side series Thomas did to discuss different topics or moral thoughts he had in his mind, expressing them with some comedic banter with his Vine characters, plus one original character. That was what drew me into the series and I wish we had more smaller videos like that inbetween the more story-driven ones (and also ones that weren't just simply ads), they're just a good breather from those episodes.

The Need of Communication with Fans - Now I personally believe that Thomas doesn't owe the fans anything in terms of the actual content in question, as at the end of the day, it's up to him of whether or not he feels comfortable with doing whatever he's creating/making. The only thing I would say he does owe to his viewers, though, is just updates and explanations as to what's going on. He doesn't have to say when episodes or stuff are coming out, it can just be simple stuff like "Hey, we're about to work on X and Y regarding this project!" or "Gonna be taking a break from this for a bit." I know the big topic right now is the season finale, but I'd like to point out "A Recipe for Me" and how long that took to get out there. Now I'm not gonna blame Thomas for how long it took to publish the song, I'm sure there's a lot that goes into creating a song from getting musicians, a composer, a company to distribute and handle the copyrights for the song, and much more. My issue is that the music video specifically features a ton of fans who paid a certain amount of money to be featured in a future video. This was at a New York event in August of 2017, and the music video didn't come out until late 2019; Thomas never gave out any updates between then as to what this video was or when it would come out. I don't know, to me, that feels a little bit rubbish; if I paid a certain tier to get featured on something, especially if it's hyped up in an advertising campaign, I'd like to know any updates on how that video is going along. I know there's also some controversy with the Patreon stuff, but I can't really speak on that matter, as I never participated in his Patreon page, mainly because I'm not interested in it.

Character Derailing - This one's a little bit more simpler than the previous two and is definitely an opinion thing, but yeah, really didn't like how some of the characters have been derailed once the show switched permanently to a story-driven format starting with "Accepting Anxiety." Whether or not it's because of the whole "orange side" plot, I personally don't know, but I miss it when characters like Roman and Patton were a lot caring of the other Sides or how Logan had a soft spot for the others but rarely feels comfortable to admit it. I don't really know how to describe this one right now, I've been writing this post for too long. XD

Of course, not all of the criticisms I agree with and some of the posts under the hashtag #tscritism do feel a bit more mean-spirited than genuine criticism, but overall, it does feel nice to know I'm not alone in thinking these things for so long. Especially after being shamed upon for having some personal criticisms with Thomas' content, reading some of these posts made me feel a bit better.

All that said, I'll leave you all with this note. It's okay to criticize someone you look up to, someone you like, no one's perfect, no one's gonna be this god of a person, an almighty being and such. It's important to acknowledge these criticisms as they can be used to further improve someone or something. However, don't go sending hate to Thomas and his team or push them to get stuff like the finale out. To me at least, it's clear that they have a specific vision for how they want this finale to go. Do they have to do it this way? No, they could just do a simple video inside Thomas' living room and call it a day. But that's not what they want the finale to be and that's okay. If they want this to have multiple sets, musical numbers, be four parts, then they do them. At the end of the day, it is Thomas' creation and he deserves to end the season (or series, I can see this being the series finale too) however way he wants to.

That's my two cents, definitely a lot longer than I anticipated. But hey, that's me for ya, I have a lot of thoughts to share on certain things, and I guess this is the first time I let a few of them out here on Tumblr.

And that's for all y'all out there who could not stand the concept of Thomas being a human being who definitely got overwhelmed by how big the series had become. He was open and honest in his video and I commend him for that. Yes it is frustrating to love a series and not get content from that series for a very long time, yes I love sanders sides and I am excited for the orange side episode yes like everybody else.

But I also know that Thomas is human, Thomas makes mistakes and he goes through stuff just like any other person out there. Just because he's a content creator it doesn't mean he's not entitled to have a little bit of grace.

Thank you Thomas for all the amazing content you made for us, thank you for everything you and Joan and the team created, and I truly hope next year is a year of success for everybody.

Hello!! I don't usually post stuff on this blog but I just wanted to ask

How's the Sanders Sides fandom doing??

Are we still alive?? Cause while I left the fandom some time ago (after being completely immersed for 3 years) I recently found myself coming back into it and I'm really sad to find not a lot of creators or new content recently. I know that there hasn't been lotsa canon content but c'mon guys!

Where are the aus, comics, animatics?? Incorrect quotes?? Fanfics?? You can't tell me I'm the only one who misses the booming community! It really felt like a family back then and I really miss that, it seems not so many people are into it, or even find it cringe!

Honestly for a while, I did too, but then I realised, do I find it cringe, or do I not want people to think I'm cringe cause I like it?? And hey, it makes me happy, so why not??

Or maybe I'm not looking hard enough and it's still alive? Anyways it's evident that it's not as big as it used to be, and that's really sad!

I'd love to see that community once more and sincerely hope it sticks around! I wonder if there's anything the tss community can to to kickstart the fandom and get it up and running again!

I've seen other TS critiquers mention how Thomas' current platform is unsustainable which is absolutely true. Tbh I think it'd be more sustainable if Thomas had any communication about Sanders Sides like at all. I know he makes other series but they're even less popular than Sanders Sides currently is so gonna ignore them (like 80% of other fanders)

I follow a ton of other creators who make scripted content who have taken years to develop a new episode of their series who have an even smaller team than Thomas but they actually update fans about the production but not in a baity way. One of them outright said along the lines of "I don't know when a new episode will come out. At this rate it could be never." And honestly I respect that. They were upfront and they didnt make excuses. Is it disappointing they most likely won't finish it? Yeah but at least I'm not being strung along like Thomas keeps doing.

I'm genuinely tired of the Patreon photos of the younger sides with no updates. Genuinely whats the point of the photos and a paragraph of text that gives us nothing?

Also for the record if any of these people are problematic I don’t know about it or what happened my entire YouTube feed for the past six years has been Reddit stories and video essays I use for background noise when I draw so if I mention someone sucky I’m sorry I haven’t consumed their content since at least middle school

For starters, I think Emma, Millard, and Horace avoid it altogether out of principle. Emma and Horace because people are stupid and they cannot believe this is what modern entertainment is and Millard because he has ruined many videos by pointing out every inaccuracy he could find and he got sick of the cesspool of misinformation that is the internet.

Jacob has been watching Minecraft videos since the beginning of the damn site. Specifically he discovered iHasCupquake and DanTDM a couple years after joining the loop and now when he’s bored and in a time with internet access he watches Minecraft Oasis and DanTDM’s Custom Mod Adventures on repeat. Noor is the exact same way, but with life hack videos very obviously aimed at middle school girls that have stuff like painting staples with nail polish and sneaking candy into class via empty glue sticks. Think Wengie and SaraBeautyCorner. They actually grew up with this so it’s more about the nostalgia than anything else

Enoch likes history videos. And videos about games like War Thunder and World of Tanks. He also likes Vine compilations, discovered when Jacob and Noor were quoting vines to each other and Enoch joined with them having absolutely zero knowledge he even knew what that was. (Horace also begrudgingly knows what Vine was, but instead of saying “yeah I sure hope it does” to Enoch’s “road work ahead???” he goes “I hate you and everything you stand for” and Enoch laughs.)

Olive, Claire, and Bronwyn watch Gacha Life/Club/whatever the fuck they’re on now I don’t know anymore music videos and Vine compilations. Bronwyn is here for quality control. (Bronwyn’s favorite YouTube series is Rosanna Pansino’s Nerdy Nummies series, even though she has no idea what any of the references are. What she does know is that she showed Jacob the Angry Birds cupcakes and he demanded they be made that exact day.)

Hugh is fascinated by all this but has little to no idea what’s going on. He did however get very invested in Sanders Sides and is very impatiently waiting with me for Orange to be revealed.

Fiona also doesn’t know what’s going on but she thinks Warrior Cats AMVs and multi-animator projects are INSANE she loves them and gets very sad when Noor is helping her look them up and they find out yet another creator is problematic

So I decided to take a quick snoop on twitter, with what's been going on the last day or so. And I and horrified to report that Twitter is somewhat aware of our existence. And this post in particular is pissing me off, so let's break it down.

So, the screenshot that op on twitter posted, it's hard to see because of the cropping but if you squint you can see that the anon says; "Maybe Thomas will understand that when he gives zero communication with fans, then they simply stop being fans?!"

Pretty straight forward, it's standard stuff that's discussed here. Thomas's lack of communication and how long it's been since the last proper sanders side episode. And it's a gripe a lot of us have with the series, it's taking a long time, there's little communication and it's frustrating.

and the OP on twitter says "disrespectfully shut the fuck up. Thomas is one of the few content creators using his platform to help Palestine, and you want to boycott HIM because you don't have your season finale yet? Put this energy where it matters. This shit is pissing me off."

Glad we can agree on something op. But that's where out similarities end it seems.

Because why did you take the original post of "if there's little to no communication (and long wait times) between episodes then people will move on to other things where that isn't an issue." to bringing up Thomas's fantastic advocacy and fund raising for Palestinians. If you reread the post again, it specifies to boycott the finale, not Thomas himself, not the work he's doing to help Palestine. Just the finale. The second screenshot though it's harder to read is someone saying that they think people shouldn't buy merch until the finale is released.

As far as I'm aware no one has ever criticized Thomas for supporting Palestine and trying to fundraise. At least not the on #ts crit #ts critisism #ts critical or #thomas sanders all of which I follow and look at religiously. And if there are those people out there they're wrong, obviously. But that's not what we, in this little corner of Tumblr discus.

I've seen other people here get death threats for criticizing Thomas. This isn't a big space, there are only a few people who make regular contributions to the tags no to mention we share them with people who criticize Taylor Swift.

There can and should be a place for people to critisize and air their grievances in peace. Especially since, as Thomas once said himself:

None of this stuff is being seen by Thomas directly, we're not on twitter, if Thomas does have a tumblr he's not getting tagged. I at the least never use the main sanders sides tags.

Saw your post about the fandom, and wanted to stop by and say hi! It actually was nice to see that pop up on my dash, cause a lot of people are getting really negative about the waits, and I've seen it get kinda nasty. So seeing you be so genuine about enjoying it is really nice to see. I'm always open to talk about Sanders Sides, though, it's still one of my favorite things even after all this time.

ME TOO! I love it so much and I think... well as a Content Creator myself, I know how hard these past few years have been for me and I am not surprised at all that it's been hard for him and his team so I can be impatient and want more content but also... I can't be mad. A little peak into my brain coming and I apologize if that wasn't what you were looking for but-

I had to close commissions and my own patreon because I had to get a job that could actually support me, and had a TON of personal stuff happened to me and my family IRL that affected a lot of my online presence.

As a consequence I don't post art NEARLY as much as I used to and I found myself feeling EXTREMELY upset about it. I used to even livestream art, can you believe it? 8U

And I sat there worrying I'd never post art again because of the burnout and stress..... and I thought everyone who liked my stuff may leave. Because that's happened before- I was a product, a machine to pump out free stuff for people to enjoy, and when the product stopped coming, people just left. That's SO hard to face as a creator, ESPECIALLY when you are trying to GENUINELY provide your art and works pretty much for free and you're already going through traumatic stuff IRL behind the screen.

To see people getting SO angry with the content that HAS been provided hurts me more than the wait and it's not because I put the man on a pedestal it's because I humanized him. I had a shit few years and so did he. Would it have been nice for him to be like 'hey I need to go on a break for a while I'm sorry', hell yeah but I didn't either. I posted every so often about Going Through It and kicking myself privately because I could barely sketch on paper, much less muster the courage to do a digital piece, but I didn't tell people wehat I was going through until later and even then a lot of my life is private and I haven't disclosed stuff because... it's personal, it's private. Online space isn't supposed to be privy to all my secrets and stuff you know?

So when I see people nitpicking the plushie episode because it's also doubled as an ad for the toys, I want to growl and bite and hiss because it's STILL an episode with an actual PLOT; it's not like the crofters ads. FWSA, the cartoon one, is a 24 minute ASIDES video and was LITERALLY given to us during Covid when EVERYTHING ELSE was shut down. Have I Grown is an hilarious video that also somewhat recaps but less episode recap and more personal sides recaps- seeing how their current mental state is. The Wes Anderson one is literally a Season Recap episode. We got a fucking Janus Cover of an OtGW song and they're all in their casual clothes and that song is about pretending everything is ok just for a littler while and it's STILL technically plot related. WTIT is a fucking ASIDES video that's 28 minutes long AND HAS PLOT! AND THE CANON CONFIRMATION OF THE SUSPECTED ORANGE SIDE!!! Incorrect Quotes was a way for us to see them being silly and lighthearted and so is The Sides Need A Nice Day!

I just- that's a lot more content than I think people realize. Yes he has a full team but that doesn't stop the stress or the burnout, especially when half your fanbase is saying how terrible you're being not being faster.

Not to mention the bloopers and the Gavin Sides and the entire episodes of Roleslaying AND a cartoon therapy have all come out AND he was part of a few song collabs too.

I just.... I can't imagine going through the stresses I went through and how much it would hurt me to provide that much stuff and still have people angry. Do you know how much I've done since Covid? Not nearly as much in terms of BIG PROJECTS.

Hello my little gems, I am here to rant a bit again about Sanders Sides and Fanders. Please don't harass anyone, I will not be mentioning names, and this is should be quick.

I just want to say some things to the fanders who are being really aggressive about the series and Thomas' direction with the characters. Firstly, I know the next episodes are taking a long time, but Thomas does have a life outside YouTube and lost a year to film because of what happened with his skin condition. The team has also been going through changes because they have lives outside of the series as well. With the character choices, the last time we saw Janus was as some have pointed out, technically, in A Date With Intrusive Thoughts. Since then everything else has been semi-canon and more casual. That does mean some character changes but most of these are supposed to be when the characters are more, for the lack of a better term, comfortable around having each other around. Characters also change as more are shown about them and as time goes on. I am almost certain that Thomas doesn't intend on Janus becoming 'The Wine Aunt' and is putting more thought into the interactions Janus will have in the canon universe but he is allowed to play with his characters when it comes to the short content especially BECAUSE most are only semi-canon and/or something to tide us over. He has said before that he is trying to get back to understanding his characters again, without Joan, and that it has been difficult.

Just everyone, be kinder while giving you criticism because I have seen some people be very rude and aggressive and being like that can discourage creators and could even put the series on an extra hiatus. This is not to say that none of the criticism is valid or can't be a little harsh, but calling other fans idiots, saying the creator isn't doing their job is just plain mean and unhelpful.

Here’s some Chaggie (Charlie x Vaggie) art I made. I’ve watched the series Hazbin Hotel through YouTube reaction videos and really like Charlie and Vaggie’s relationship, so I decided to draw them.

I’ve heard about the bad things the show’s creator has done, so I don’t support her. This account is still very much Sanders Sides focused, so if I post any more Hazbin fanart in the future it will most likely just be of Charlie and Vaggie. I am a HUGE fan of Thomas Sanders, and I mean a HUGE fan. I have three posters, two pairs of socks, two pins, a necklace, a t-shirt, and a Christmas sweater. Hell, I’m even thinking of getting even more merch from him.

I’m in no way happy to make this post, but I feel as though it needs to be said with how angry the fandom is right now.

As much as I love Thomas, and his work, I feel like he hasn’t been paying as much attention to his fan base as he should. Sure he’s sharing his fan art and cosplays, all that jazz, but he really isn’t focusing on the criticism.

Do I love the new anime intro thing? Absolutely. Am I still angry that we haven’t gotten an official episode in nearly 3 years? Also yes.

I love Sanders Sides, and I can see the entire fandom so deprived of content that we’re taking funny videos like the incorrect quotes and the anime intro as MAIN CONTENT. That’s not main content. That’s silly side content you’d expect from a fan, not the actual creator.

I understand why he hasn’t been working the last year, he’s been dealing with a skin condition and I can’t blame him for not wanting to make a whole lot of content bc of it.

However, my point still stands. The fandom is dying. We are starving. We were promised that the season finale would be released this year and haven’t gotten any updates besides some comments he’s made about working on the script.

I love Thomas, but his lack of transparency on progress is making his fan base fussy. I wish he’d acknowledge that and give us at least a little bit of an update. At this point, that’s all we’re begging for.

All Individual pages must feature origional fanwork by the creator (i.e. no using other people's aus!)

All writing and art for this event must be created WITHOUT the use of AI

Canvas size regulations (for artists): - A4 (single page, portrait) - 3508 x 2480 px / 297 x 210 mm - A3 (Page spread, landscape) - 4961 x 3508 px / 420 x 297 mm

Size guidence for writers: - There is no page size regulations, but please ensure the amount you write is able to fit on 1-2 a4 pages at 12pt font size minimum! (One A4 page at 12pt is roughly 650 words, depending on font choice).

As a collaborative team or alone, a writer/artist may chose to format their own pages, or simply submit seperate pieces (text blocks/documents/multiple art pieces for one page) for mod Rowan to format in post-production!
