I was thinking about the 5 year anniversary video and

it is interesting to me how Patton kind of decided for Logan what his role in the "family" would be. all the other sides chose it themselves, but he didn't get to.

even when he actively objects it's played for laughs and never addressed. this happened too when Patton revealed his name for him, and I just think it's interesting to note that after all these years, Logan still never gets to decide anything when it comes to Thomas, or even himself, to an extent. it's just kind of decided for him and he is expected to just go along with it, similar to how it was when Thomas dyed his hair.

ik it's mainly a "haha wine mom" moment, but that doesn't take away from how angsty it gets when you think about it.

I hope the orange side has a super detailled extra show-offy villain outfit like Remus and Janus because I think it'd be cool (I personally think a punk outfit with a bunch of spikes could be awesome and fitting for a side that I think will represent anger) but also funny because like there's these three super glamorous dark sides and right next to them is this dude in a dark gray hoodie who is COMPLETELY dripless (Virgil)

Janus is def the annoying ex that still try’s to flirt. Like he still ain’t over it and will go out of his way to bother you or annoy you while still wanting you back.

Like in the incorrect quotes v4 he does a little wave at Virgil and acts so damn seductive when he’s talking to him. IM TELLING YOU HE WANTS VEE BACK-

If you don't mind my miniscule tss angst but-

Do you like the intricacies of Virgil's and Patton's relationship? Do you like how "controlling" and "censoring" Patton is of all the others, including Virgil?

Because Virgil started out as a villain, and even though Patton has "adopted" him, I need to remind you how he treated him the first few episodes. Namely:

By being scared out of his pants the moment he appeared.

By blaming him in Mind vs Heart for bringing Thomas down

And oh yes, by changing every aspect of his personality to "fit in" with the rest of the light sides.

Because let's be real, despite Virgil's eyeshadow being darker, everything else spells him being less and less distressed by every episode.

Thomas' Anxiety is changing, because Patton can only (for now) see things in black and white. And make no mistake, this is changing, but this is changing in the expense of his relationship with Virgil. Because despite Virgil feeling like he has to change in order to be accepted, in order to fit in the overly tight boxes that Patton has for him, the rest of the dark sides haven't changed one bit.

And yet Patton has learnt to endorse them. Because Patton learnt how to see in more grey terms after Virgil changed for him.

My Roman Empire is the sides and Thomas’s reactions after Janus got slapped

When you see your ship’s colors out of context and you have to pretend you’re sane

I don't know if I'll be able to put my thoughts into words but I'll try. I like to interpret the ending of POF as a sort of trolley problem on its own right, in which patton is the arbiter. he is faced with a choice, either he stays set on his ways of rigid morality, or he extends an olive branch to janus - which would be what could help c!thomas in the long run - and in the process, hurts roman. at this point, this was unavoidable, due to everything that led up to it. the moment roman felt it was his duty as 'good' creativity to embody heroic virtues (honor, courage, etc), they were fated to go down this path. because in commiting himself to these ideals, to being on patton's side, he became, symbolically, a representation of them. the black and white mindset was never sustainable, it hurt c!thomas and it hurt roman and it hurt the other sides. they had to let it go. at the end of POF, patton is watching the trolley come barreling down, and his hand on the lever - but, as realizes then and there, he's also the one who tied them to the tracks. ultimately, he chose to save the five people, to do right by c!thomas, but what was the price of that? what were the consequences?

My Sander Sides Enlightment

You know what’s always kinda bothered me? Those mean takes on the other sides. Like ‘Janus is manipulating Patton and isn’t actually trying to be friends with him,’ ‘Patton has too much moral superiority,’ ‘Roman never learns,’ So on and so forth. There is something bad to say about all the sides. No hate to anyone who's made one, you are valid and probably right in your own way. I think the only reason they bother me so much is because you can easily say the opposite. The most common phrase being ‘Nobody listens to ____’

“Nobody listens to Patton! He was trying to show the others that Virgil was good all along and only when Virgil was gone did they listen.”

“Nobody listens to Logan! He gets ignored constantly and he’s getting mad because of it.”

“Nobody listens to Roman! Every time he comes up with a solution, he gets shut down only to get blamed for not coming up with a solution.”

“Nobody listens to Virgil! He only gets listened to when he forces Thomas to hear him, and he doesn’t like doing that.”

“Nobody listens to Janus! Even when he has good ideas and arguments, they get pushed to the side because he is a dark side.”

“Nobody listens to Remus! That was the entire point of an episode. And all he wants is to be listened to, it doesn’t matter who.”

And all of these are valid points. But at some point, you have to wonder who’s not listening the most. Which is how I think the criticism posts of the characters came to be in the first place. But I don’t think any of them are to blame. Even when this new side gets revealed, it won’t be his fault either. The fault isn’t on Roman, or Logan, or Janus, or any of them.

It's on Thomas.

And of course I don’t mean ‘Writer Thomas,’ I mean ‘Character Thomas.’ Throughout the series, Thomas has always held himself high. You can’t be perfect, but you can try to be. And every time a situation comes up, he doubts himself, wondering if he’s even any good at all.

And in comes the sides, telling him that he can’t be bad and here's why. In fact, Thomas won’t let himself be bad at anything. Can’t be a bad worker, can’t be a bad actor or singer, and certainly can’t be a bad friend. Even in situations where he wouldn’t even be those things, he can’t even let himself risk it.

And so, the sides follow suit.

Logan becomes the perfect person for knowledge and learning, never letting himself be anything less than right all the time.

Roman strives to be perfect physically and materialistically, coming up with creative ideas that help Thomas move up in the world or, at the very least, make himself feel better.

Patton is the perfectly moral person. Make sure everyone is alright, help whenever and wherever you can, and always keep a smile on. Wouldn’t want anyone worrying for you, right? That wouldn’t be good.

Virgil is the perfect alarm system. Even false alarms are taken with the utmost seriousness. Just as long as no one else knows your anxious.

Janus is a deceiver. And Thomas lies often. So he needs to be the best at putting on a face and making sure nothing goes off without a hitch. Wouldn’t want people catching him in a lie. He needs to be the perfect liar.

And then there's Remus. The only one who tries not to be perfect. But that idea terrifies the others so much, Remus is left to pick up all of the imperfection slack. Maybe that's why Remus was offended when he was called ‘Scary.’

Trying to be so many perfect things all at once, you’re going to but heads with all of the different aspects of yourself. You're going to not listen. You're going to ignore. And in some cases, your perfectionism is going to make you look like the bad guy. And as someone with perfectionism, I relate a little too hard.
