Aziraphale's bibles

Have you ever noticed how many bibles Aziraphale has just lying about? So. Many. Bibles. Oodles of bibles! In S1 we only saw two, one on top of the desk that he used for checking the number of the beast in Revelations; and the other one on the desk surface, right behind his angel mug when he sat to read The Book (not that book, the other book, the one with the true prophecies).

In S2, we see no less than five bibles on his desk alone and more around the bookshop.

The first one is on the left, right under the little "For the Young: Hymns for Church and Home, with Forms of Services" book, which incidentally opens to: "So shall no wicked thing draw near, To do us harm or cause us fear." (This angel has no shame).

Then there are three more in the desk's middle compartments. One, with a green cover, is on the left slot, right above the tray with pens (this one is a New Testament only). The other two, both with black covers, are right behind the mug, where the RadioTimes watermark is. They look identical but they could be two volumes of the same edition or two different editions. We can probably assume one of these is supposed to be the one from S1. The desk in S1 didn't have compartments, it had drawers so there were no books in that area.

The last one is the on on top of the desk, on the right. This would be the same he used in S1 (although the bible itself is different)

On his right side, sometimes he has an easel where he displays a large book. This is not a bible itself, but an illustrated book of biblical motifs. Sometimes it is closed and sometimes it is open. He normally has it on the Adam and Eve page (cheeky!) but in Ep 2 he opened it to the Book of Job page instead.

There is yet another one in the shelf that Gabriel Jim is organizing

And there is one more in the first backroom (the one with the computer where he talks with Gabriel and Sandalphon). It is on a little table by the door of the private backroom (the one where he confers with Crowley in)

But there is a set of bibles that are even more important to him than any of the other ones. Although the show never mentioned it, the book tells us that in addition to his passion for prophecy books, he also loves and collects misprinted bibles*:

"And he had a complete set of the Infamous Bibles, individually named from errors in typesetting. These Bibles included the Unrighteous Bible, so called from a printer’s error which caused it to proclaim, in I Corinthians, “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall inherit the Kingdom of God?”; and the Wicked Bible, printed by Barker and Lucas in 1632, in which the word not was omitted from the seventh commandment, making it “Thou shalt commit Adultery.” There were the Discharge Bible, the Treacle Bible, the Standing Fishes Bible, the Charing Cross Bible and the rest. Aziraphale had them all. Even the very rarest, a Bible published in 1651 by the London publishing firm of Bilton and Scaggs."

This collection of bibles is hiding in plain sight and readily on hand. Just ask Jim!

The rest are right there on Aziraphale's desk. The tags are hard to read but I found, from right to left, The Treacle Bible, The Discharge Bible, The Unrighteous Bible, then three that I couldn't decipher, the Standing Fishes Bible and The Charing Cross Bible. One of those three is supposed to be the Buggre All This Bible, but none of the tags seemed to fit.

*All the bibles mentioned are real except for the Charing Cross Bible and the Buggre Alle This Bible which in the GO world was printed by Bilton and Scaggs, the publishing company that also printed The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. I have a whole post about Bilton and Scaggs if interested. Now, looking back to S1, as part of his restoring the world, Adam replaced Aziraphale's misprinted bibles with Just William books. Let that sink in... Adam moved Aziraphale's bibles from their righteous place. No wonder Crowley realized it right away. These are Aziraphale's bibles for Go- for Sat- for Somebody's sake!

Fortunately by S2 everything was back to normal.

Lost Fic #200

1. Hi! Idk if you can help me but I trying to find this one specific fic. I think the plot was gabirel and sandalphon try to ruin aziraphale and crowley’s reputation by yelling that they’re gay in public but literally no one cares and they get chewed out for it by an elderly couple. I’m pretty sure that it’s either a one shot or like two/three chapters and that it’s pre season 2. Idk if this helps. Thanks! - anon

2. Lost a fic that I can't remember much about but it had multiple chapters, Aziraphale and Crowley through the years, and some female presenting. I remember there was a scene where they were on a boat and it flipped, due to Crowley leaning in for a kiss. There's also mentions of Aziraphale's diary and feelings for Crowley. Another scene was a picnic and almost kiss. Eventually they talked it out and realized they loved each other and Aziraphale asked Crowley if she intended for them to almost kiss on the boat. I think it's on Ao3? No idea. - @spaceypotato19

3. Hii, first of all thanks so much for all the work you do here!! I am looking for a fic and I can't find it in my bookmarks or using the tags of this blog. It was a cinderella au but with a a/b/o twist. Azi was the omega and to go to the dance anathema uses a potion or smth to make it look like hes an alpha and A and C meet and they fall in love and marry but eventualy C descovers the truth and there was a kidnapping or smth. I also remember C calling omegas in general very clingy and A taking offense and such. It was a long fic, probably 80k+ I belive Thanksss! - @just-here-doing-something

4. Hi! I'm hoping you can help me find a fic. It's a sequel (although i can't find part 1 either) where Crowley accidentally switches to female genitals. He freaks out because he didn't think Aziraphale will want him anymore, so he freezes time and runs away. The other moment I remember is that it turns out Crowley has not been killing plants. Rather he puts them on his balcony for "retirement." It has a happy ending. I how you can help, because it's driving me crazy! Thanks!! - anon

5. Hello :3 I am aware that you are all very busy but I thought I'd shoot my shot. A friend and I were talking about a specific plotline of a fic that we both remember, it being Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship with their own mothers being a representation of their relationship with God in the original work. We remember that Crowley was jealous of Aziraphale's unconditional and undying love for his mother even though he never knew her cause she died when he was really young and was raised by his grandfather, hence why he's so old fashioned, because his own mother was really crappy and threw him out of the house when he was young. This talk made me want to read it again, but neither of us can remember the title or the main plot apart from this one thing. If anyone has any idea what he could be, please let me know!! (And thank you in advance to anyone who can help) I feel like I should also mention, at some point Crowley goes into Aziraphale's room and sees pictures of him as a baby with his mother looking very happy on his bedside table and that's when he starts feeling jealous. There's also a bunch of other childhood pictures of Aziraphale on there but the most important one is the one with his mother. (also, it was a human au, if that helps) If you could help me find it, I would be ever so grateful. Thank you so much! - @sunlecitron

Things of Note at @neil-gaiman ‘s NJPAC talk:

1. Do you people understand that he switches into accents when he reads? Do you people know he does a perfect Michael Sheen impression? did you know it’s also hot

2. He used to cold call publishers/mags to see if they’d publish his work. He’d lie when asked what other magazines he wrote for; they’d think he was more legitimate and would, therefore, be more likely to take him on themselves. “You couldn’t get away with that now” thanks to Google. Also, back then, “we had telephones and we used them,” but today’s publishers would not easily recover if you unexpectedly called them on the phone.

3. It was a personal point of pride for Neil to write for each of the magazines he’d claimed to have written for. He said “I didn’t lie. I was chronologically challenged.”

4. Neil made a deliberate effort to not be boxed in by publishers. He’d interviewed many authors who were unhappily boxed and did everything he could to avoid it, including declining big contracts from prestigious publishers (notably after American Gods). This is why he can write what he likes now. Comics writing spoiled him in this regard, as publishers mistook the medium for a genre, and therefore didn’t care what he wrote (so he wrote all the genres he wanted to in Sandman).

5. He hates Thomas Hardy thanks to being introduced to him in school. Regarding being forced to read Tess of the D’urbervilles, he said “I wouldn’t do that to a dog”. He hopes students, who might have liked him if they found him on their own, don’t encounter his work in school and hate him for it.

6. “The evil characters (you write) don’t possess you, you try to find the little bit of you in them….the little bit of you that is gloriously evil.”

7. “I touched the magic and passed it along” this was a line from Watching from the Shadows that especially moved me.

8. Terry was increasingly upset as the bidding on Good Omens increased (eventually reaching 150,000 - can’t remember if he said $ or £). For his part, when the book finally sold, Neil put on Iggy Pop’s Success and danced.

9. Anansi Boys should be out on Prime by the end of 2024!

10. Described Sandalphon as someone you want to “hit with a large oar”. (The woman next to me, who was extremely stingy with her applause, hooted like an owl at this and clapped til the last).

11. Pronounces Amazon as “Ama-zin” and Los Angeles as “Los Angelese”. This isn’t noteworthy, but I liked it enough to write it down.

12. “Being on a beach in bare feet” was the line that led Neil to realize David Tennant would be perfect for Crowley.

13. He is pictured on the ALA’s poster holding Wind in the Willows because, as a child, “it messed up my head.” He said he is “in love” with a chapter in the middle called The Piper at the Gates of Dawn where the characters meet Pan. It’s often left out of printings, which makes him sad because it is “strange, beautiful, luminous”.

14. TOATEOTL was originally planned to go to Broadway. Then, Covid. They did a “world tour” instead. Now that it’s wrapped, talks about Broadway are happening. He says all of adaptations of his work, this is his favorite.

15. “Disney’s Aladdin plays four times a day in Hell”

16. His favorite question of the night was “WHY did you think of the Other Mother?” He was tickled by the word choice of “why”

17. Asked the library in Sussex “What have you got in the way of really good horror for four year olds?” Obviously none existed so he wrote Coraline.

18. Talked about going viral for being in a falafel, seemed to marvel at the progression of the meme’s meaning.

19. “Tumblr is its own madness”

20. “Stephen King has fabulous stories about meeting fans in toilets, including being passed a book under the stall”

21. Read “The Day the Saucers Came” which I misheard initially as Sauces. Saucers is definitely better.

22. “You want to see me doing Dickens?” I laughed inappropriately at this. I was the only one.

23. I don’t want to say what pieces he read because I want you to buy tickets to his events. But it was very nice to be read to by Neil Gaiman.

It’s very worth it to go. I flew out from San Diego for this and would do it again in a heartbeat!

The Doylist Argument for Crowley Being An Important Angel (Pre-Fall)

So I just read a great essay on all the arguments for why Crowley is Raphael by @cyan-cirby and rather than subjecting them to attaching my long-winded additions directly onto their post, figured I'd make my own.

(As a quick aside, I do think Crowley was probably Raphael specifically. It's just too big of an omission of archangels that People Have Actually Heard Of to include Gabriel and Michael, and then jump to lesser known archangel names like Uriel, then totally obscure names like Sandalphon while skipping Raphael, a goddamn Ninja Turtle of well-known archangel names. And I don't think Crowley was Lucifer because Satan is already a character and Neil point-blank said Satan and Lucifer are the same person, otherwise it's too confusing (never mind other evidence like that Crowley referred to Lucifer in the 3rd person in S1, but I digress).)

Anyway! There's plenty of fantastic essays like the one I shared above that go into the fresh new Season 2 evidence for why Crowley was Raphael or at the very least important and high-ranked before he Fell. But I'm a fresh (and still primarily) denizen of the other Neil Gaiman Recent TV Show Adaptation of The Sandman so I want to delve into why Crowley was An Important Angel because that's just how Gaiman writes.

- Crowley is the more Gaiman-y of the two characters and Aziraphale the more Pratchett-y. I’m not making this up from nothing, Pratchett and Gaiman have taken photos and done promotions for the Good Omens book where they modeled themselves that way and basically cosplayed those characters respectively.

- I'm a Pratchett Super Fan first and foremost and can say with some authority that Pratchett tends to write Normal People. Even his Special People are Normal People who have to put their socks on one at a time in the morning. However, his Normal People do Special Things. That's the point. He truly believes, deep down in his bones, in equality and it shows in his portrayal of his protagonists as normal people who rise to an extraordinary occasion.

-Aziraphale is Pratchett's angel in Good Omens and it follows from that that Aziraphale is a Normal Angel doing extraordinary things (defying Heaven’s will to save the world). It aligns with Pratchett's general writerly sensibilities that his angel who saves the world is just a normal low-ranked angel, nothing special by birth, who is fussy and imperfect but nevertheless rises to the challenge to do incredible things in a comedic way. That's how Pratchett's protagonists work.

- Gaiman writes Special People. Dream/Morpheus and the other Endless are born Special People. Rose in Sandman learns she is born Special. Shadow in American Gods learns he was born Special.

- Gaiman very often writes about protagonists who are mythological and/or magical and thus who are super powerful by birth. They are generally only limited either by their own emotional immaturity or by Cosmic Rules.

-Gaiman has also, on more than one occasion, inserted a character who rather resembles him and mirrors his sartorial choices of wearing all black into the story as a protagonist and then made them a Cool Character. Not a criticism, just sayin’, Dream/Morpheus and Crowley come from the same era in his career.

My point is, Crowley is the Gaiman character so, in my opinion, especially when you combine this hunch with the new lore additions in S2, there are some past authorial choices and sensibilities that lead me to believe that with sole creative control of Crowley’s arc and character background, as well Pratchett’s tacit collaborator blessing since this is Gaiman’s Character, we’re going to see a default to old habits and a continuation of this trend because authors are people and they tend to have their way of doing things.

Which is why I think we're going to learn that Crowley Is Special By Birth (being an archangel), super overpowered (like Dream), and only limited in achieving what he wants by Cosmic Rules and being emotionally stunted.

The Expanded 5th Dimensional Chakras - The Higher Chakras

The 5th Dimension

The fifth dimension is a superconscious area of clear light, a wide realm of knowledge, insight and intuition, encompassing all forms of time, space, and divine consciousness. For humans it is being in a state of awareness, of being, where we are present, aware, engaged and our spiritual being is wholly integrated in our physical world.

Ascension is the process of transition of our consciousness from solely material perception to include a spiritual perception.

By practicing qualities associated with the spiritual dimension, we can accelerate our ascension.

Earth Star Chakra

Location: 6 - 12 inches below your feet connected to the two chakras in your feet.

Color: Black & white and evolves into a deep gray

The Earth Star Chakra, once activated, changes everything. It connects your personal energy to the energy of the Earth and universal energies. The foundation of your ascension pathway, the Earth Star offers an amplified level of grounding and stability. The Earth Star is what connects us to the collective consciousness of Earth and humanity and because of this it is actively monitored by the Archangel Sandalphon who offers us continual support on our ascension. The Earth Star chakra forms a downward facing triangle with the chakras on the soles of your feet. This triangle allows you to release energy into the Earth where Gaia will transmute the energy into usable forms (think birds, worms, trees). Through the Earth Star, you will also receive energy from Earth. It holds the imprint of your life purpose, what you came here to fulfill on this life journey. The activated Earth Star will guide you to the location where you are meant to be to carry out your life mission. This supports you in finding your souls purpose here.

Root Chakra or Expanded Base Chakra

Location: The base of your spine

5D Color: Platinum

On the ascension pathway the normally red Root chakra turns into a rich platinum color. Archangel Gabriel is responsible for nurturing the Base chakra in the early stages of ascension. This is the anchor point for embodying our higher spiritual aspects. Where we feel strongly rooted in our lives. We no longer feel insecure and fearful and no longer turn to flawed teachers or leaders to create a feeling of safety. We feel deeply connected and secure. You know, without effort, that all your physical needs are being met. Your family and friend relationships are healthy and the challenges you experience are less disruptive. You may be in connection with your ancestors and allow them to guide you as well. You stand solidly and receive from Mother Earth allowing abundance to flow into your life without fear. The division between our Higher and Lower Self no longer exists. WE BECOME our Higher Self.

Expanded Sacral Chakra

Location: Pelvic region

5D Color: Pink

This sacral chakra holds the most challenging issues to clear and merge into. It holds the most modern challenges in regards to relationships, sexuality and finances. Those are the issues to be cleared as we move through this chakra. Our societies have been based around the lower aspects of money and relationships. There have been a great many number of souls working on their own clearing of these lower patterns to help all of us access this higher energy of transcendent love. We are drawn together with partners and family in harmony. When there are lessons to be learned from each other, it is done in a way that supports each of us on our pathways. When families connect on this higher sacral chakra, karmic bonds dissolve. Each individual in the family can be independent and free to enjoy relationships based in love and mutual respect. We develop unconditionally loving and accepting families.

Expanded Navel Chakra

Location: In between the Sacral and Solar Plexus chakras

5D Color: Golden orange.

The Navel chakra works to unify our energies with those around us and other forms of life. We are completely aware of our connection to the Universe. The activation and rise in frequency of the Navel chakra assists us to come together in communities of unconditional love. People learn cooperation and see the best and highest good in those around us. We respect and honor differences in others. Our soul families and spiritual support networks are drawn together. It allows us to truly experience oneness as we are aware of our true spiritual essence. When the expanded Navel chakra is activated we may see challenging circumstances which allow people to meet and communicate with a heightened sense of awareness., Meaning we work together worldwide to bring solutions to challenging situations were the good for all is brought out. A profound sense of in-this-together prevails and we work for the greater good of all. We experience the feeling of everyone on Earth as a part of ourselves.

Expanded Solar Plexus Chakra

5D Color: Bright gold

Location: Below the ribcage

We have ignored the psychic center of our Solar Plexus. We have traditionally relied solely on our logical minds to navigate the way forward. The Solar Plexus holds powerful psychic abilities until now largely untapped. Think about how we talk about having a "gut" feeling to a situation or person. The expansion of this chakra supports us as we integrate our *gut-level* instincts into our lives. In the 5th Dimension, we take responsibility for ourselves, our own energies. You alone are responsible for your happiness or sadness. Not another person, not one past event or situation creates your state of being. You are. It is becoming aware of the energy we put out and how it affects others. Many karmic and energetic agreements are held in the Solar Plexus and through the ascension these bonds are released and transmuted. We may find a greater sense of freedom and autonomy in our lives while still having the support of our families and soul network.

Expanded Heart Chakra

5D Color: Bright white or sparkling gold.

Location: Between the Heart and the Throat just about 6 inches away from the body.

The Heart Chakra and the human heart is at the core of the ascension process. The human heart generates an electromagnetic field 100 times more powerful than the human brain. It is typically the first higher chakra to activate. Many, many people on Earth have achieved this level of ascension. They are capable of awakening others because they carry it in their vibration. Have you ever walked into a party where everyone was kind of keeping to themselves and the energy was low and them someone walks in and suddenly everyone perks up? The party gets energized. That is an example of the vibration being shared.

Every chakra carries an imprint, a memory or blueprint you can call it. When other chakras of those not yet awakened to the 5D expansion are near one who has mastery of the Heart chakra, those memories or blueprints can be activated - awakened. Think muscle memory. The muscles once used can be reactivated by exercise. We all have the energetic memory of this higher energy stashed in our chakras. The expanded Heart chakra connects us with the Cosmic Heart of the Universe, flooding us, via the moon, with Christ Consciousness (not Christ as in Jesus Christ the person but the example of consciousness Jesus and other Masters such as Buddha, have expressed.) Instead of ego consciousness or separation from the Universe, we recognize a united consciousness with all life. This supports a massive flow of Divine feminine energy to us in order to balance the masculine energies now active. Upon activation of the expanded Heart chakra, we speak our heartfelt truth in the face of adversity. We experience gratitude and appreciation more easily and frequently.

Expanded Throat Chakra

5D Color: Electric royal blue, as the frequency rises it turns to a diamond frequency allowing a spectrum of light to be seen.

The power of the spoken word. Wow, who hasn't experienced the power of the word either in print or spoken or sung? Within the essence of every word there are layers of vibrations, codes and meaning. Recognized widely, the power of the word has been used by many, some for good and some for bad. Archangel Michael oversees the development of this 5D chakra. He works to free this powerful center of communication from disruptive energetic cords allowing this center of truth and power to anchor permanently. Allowing us through this chakra to communicate directly with higher beings (think Guides, Angels and Ascended Masters). This expanded Throat chakra brings with it the ability to speak our truth with the purity of the heart bringing unconditional love (and sometimes healing) into the lives of all who hear the words.

Expanded Third Eye Chakra

Location: Between the Third eye and the Crown chakra about 6 inches in front of the head.

5D Color: Emerald green

The expanded Third eye chakra is a merging of the Third eye and the Crown, creating an expanded Third eye chakra. Overseen by the Archangel Raphael, he is responsible for its development. Mastering the energies in the 5th dimension will require us to be fully responsible for our lives and our soul path, and be able to stand in our own personal power. More recently, we have been learning how to create a life for ourselves that brings deep soul satisfaction. The merging of the energies of the Crown chakra gives us a huge increase in our abilities to manifest. We are able to see how quickly our thoughts turn into reality. In this higher heart energy we are urged to focus on what we really want the Universe to deliver for the highest good. Along with this merging of the Crown and Third Eye energies, more and more people are able to see into the world of spirit . Our clairs are more developed, the clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience and claircognizance are expanding rapidly. The merging of these energies allow us to develop the mastery of creating love and beauty in extraordinary ways. The Ascended Masters Lord Voosloo and Master Serapis Bay are helping us to learn to use these blended energies.

Expanded Crown Chakra

Location: On top of the head.

Color: Liquid gold.

This once thousand petal lotus becomes more like a radio antenna. It searches for higher frequencies to tune into. It connects with these higher frequencies and channels them into the pineal gland. A multitude of light frequencies spanning the Universe are directed through the Stellar Gateway to the Crown Chakra. Depending on your chosen mission here, those codes specific to you will be brought to you. Archangel Jophiel is charged with assisting us with the early stages of the development of our expanded Crown. He gently fills our Crown with waves of light that spreads through our spiritual fields and expands around us. We begin to receive energy directly from our soul blueprint to guide us on our way. This may be challenging but amazing. Our missions are specific. We have jobs to do and have incarnated at this time to focus on this. We are here to change the world in our own small way. We learn here to depend on our own inner knowledge and wisdom. Through the expansion of this chakra, we have access to it. We won't need to depend on channeling information from higher realms. It gives us personal access to Enlightened Wisdom.

Expanded Causal Chakra

Location: Just above and slightly behind the head.

Color: Pearly moon white

The Causal Chakra is often seen as being connected to the Moon, absorbing divine feminine light. It acts as a magnet for lunar light, raising your vibration and illuminating the deep feminine wisdom held within your soul. The vibration of wisdom and compassion is dissolving the unbalanced masculine forces, allowing the heart to rule. The Universal Angel Mary monitors and dispenses this energy. Another deeply powerful purpose of this chakra is a deep and intimate connection with the world of spirit. The level of connection depends upon the level of psychic gifts one has and their soul mission. It allows a two-way flow of energy from the angelic realms, bringing the angelic vibration to the person and anchors it. Archangel Cristiel oversees this chakra and brings even higher aspects of the Christ consciousness into the Earth field through this chakra. I was watching an energy healer practicing on a person with shoulder problems. I saw a huge beam of pearly white light stream into her Causal charka. I told her about it and she could only say that she had asked for help while working on this mans shoulder. We receive angelic support through this chakra.

Expanded Soul Star Chakra

Location: 12 inches above the head immediately above the Causal chakra

Color: Bright diamond white

The Soul Star chakra is activated in the early stages of the ascension process. It holds the energy patterns of every single gift, talent and spiritual achievement that has been gained by the us. This includes wisdom and knowledge earned during lives that have occurred in other bodies, dimensions and universes. When it first awakens it is overseen by Archangels Zadkiel and Mariel to ensure it is opened and activated to its full potential. Divided into two aspects, the higher which is the access the wisdom of your soul experiences; and the lower aspect which connects the individual with its monad bringing in light to accelerate its chosen path. That is when you start to recognize your soul journey. Each soul path is unique and we have access to what we need when we need it through the expanded soul star.

Expanded Stellar Gateway

Location: 18 inches above the head.

Color: White (often with golden threads of light)

An incredibly bright light that connects the individual soul in its physical body to the source of light from which they originate. I tend to see it glow and expand much like the Milky Way constellation. This connects us to the star or planet of our origin. When we had just the 7 body chakras operating our Crown was in charge of receiving and processing all the inflow of light and information. As we move into the 5th dimensional way of living the Stellar Gateway takes on this role. It is capable of receiving very high frequencies and stepping it down to a level that is comfortable for us to receive. The Archangel Metatron pours light into this chakra to nurture its development. Once anchored, he stands back and allows us to expand into our soul mission at our own pace. Our Stellar Gateway chakra is connected to the Earth's Stellar Gateway (located in the Arctic) When the earth's frequency rises, we do too. And when we collectively raise our vibrations, the Earth does too.

In this post, I'm going to tie numerous observations on screen together to make a single season 3 prediction

it relies on this premise, which i'm about to build a case for:

the way the characters interact with the story is informed by the mythical/historical figures they are directly and indirectly coded as, but it’s not always in the way you’d expect, and some characters are coded in more than one way. we can still use these relationships as Clues to postulate where the story might go and how the characters will interact with one another.

this is by no means exhaustive, obviously. i’ve seen people say that Crowley is coded as Jesus, Aziraphale as Mary, and numerous other figures. i’m just pointing out some things i’ve noticed that I haven’t seen brought up as often.

we’ll start with Crowley, then go on to Sandalphon and Saraqael, then Gabriel, then Aziraphale. yes, it'll all lead up to something and i chose these characters in this order for a reason.

Crowley

so we obviously know he’s coded as Ashtoreth when he dresses up as Nanny Ashtoreth in season 1. yes, we will note that in the book, it’s very vaguely implied that Crowley and Aziraphale both hired Ashtoreth and Francis

in season 2, when trying to get the deets on bae, Beelzebub offers Crowley a “hefty” promotion and then later tells him “you could be a duke of hell".

in researching Beelzebub, at some point I found out about Milton's Unholy Trinity in Paradise Lost, which includes Lucifer, Beelzebub, and Astaroth as the first heirarchy in Hell, and which has (seemingly) lent that idea to demonology in general.

Astaroth is often referred to as the "Great Duke of Hell."

so now with season 2, Crowley has been coded in the show as both the feminine and masculine demons derived from the eastern goddess Astarte.

note: coded != Crowley is literally Astaroth/Ashtoreth. it means we can infer things about the story through the coding

the obvious would be him becoming a duke of Hell somehow in season 3. i personally am not convinced the story will take that route, and it would be sad to see him end up back in hell. this coding is the least compelling for me. it could just be a Milton reference, or maybe, since at this point in season 2, we don’t know why Beelzebub wants Gabriel, this could be a Clue that Beelzebub was sincere. maybe it just shows how powerful Crowley could have been if he’d accepted the deal. or maybe it just adds weight to parallel the decision Aziraphale makes later when offered his own position of power. people have analyzed Crowley and Ashtoreth/Astarte before, and the book/show discrepancy is always brought up, so i'm ignoring that and just addressing the added layer of Astaroth coding. anyway, let's move on to the more interesting observations.

Sandalphon and Saraqael

i’m doing these two together because i’ve found what i believe to be a major connection between them based on Neil’s answer to this ask, a shared trait their mythical figures have, and Saraqael’s actions in the show.

when Sandalphon is introduced in season 1, we learn that he was smiting and turning people into salt during Sodom and Gomorrah. then we see the direct connection Saraqael has with Sandalphon at the end of season 2, when Michael asks her to turn Maggie and Nina into salt pillars and her hand flys up.

but that’s not secret, is it?

you know what is, though?

the fact that she immediately recognizes Metatron in his human form, looks scared shitless for multiple shots, and then proceeds to act like it never happened when he starts addressing all the angels. she doesn’t let anyone know that she recognized him.

still don’t believe me and think that reaction is nothing?

well, let me tell you something both the mythical figures Sandalphon and Saraqael have in common.

they both saw Metatron in his human form.

according to one source, Sandalphon was Metatron’s twin brother, and Sandalphon, like Metatron, was originally human.

in the book of 2 Enoch, Sariel/Saraqael was one of the angels who brought Enoch (human!Metatron) to Heaven.

if Sandalphon had been in that room at that moment, he’d also be secretly recognizing Metatron.

obligatory: remember what I said at the beginning of this post? we are using this coding to analyze the story and how the characters interact with it and eachother. you don’t believe that Sandalphon or Metatron were literally human at one point in GO? that’s fine. i’m just giving a reason why the author may have chosen Saraqael and Sandalphon to serve the same purpose in this scene

it isn’t crazy to think that a lot of the historical lore was used to inform the characters, and if you think it is, at least read about Gabriel first.

Gabriel

Gabriel is being coded…as the actual archangel (fucking) Gabriel. (and as Lord Jim from the novel of the same name by Joseph Conrad - the book Aziraphale glances at before choosing to call Gabriel Jim. but you can google the plot of Lord Jim and how it relates to Gabriel on your own time. it’s too much to get into right now.)

Gabriel is an archangel with the power to announce God’s will to mankind. He is associated with messages, vision, telecommunications, and revelation…

…and in the Bible he announces the birth of John the Baptist, and later, Jesus.

30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS

Luke 1:30-31

"hey Sithis dude you will not believe this… God now grants that you may conceive seven more children…yippe!!”

let’s get back to that thing about him delivering messages and revelation though.

Gabriel starts off season 2 carrying a box to the book shop (that we think was empty but later find out had a fly in it as well as a message scrawled on the bottom about where his memory is)

he also tells Aziraphale that something terrible was going to happen to him so he had to give him something. you can take that as being the fly, and consciously it probably was, but throughout season 2 Gabriel is unconsciously and unintentionally giving other people messages.

ex.

technically, a message “delivered” (dropped) by Gabriel, found by Muriel

after Crowley not-so-nicely commands Gabriel to remember, Jimbriel says, in a voice that shifts to sound like God’s voice, “I remember when the morning stars sang together and all the angels of God shouted for joy." Crowley recognizes this as what God said to Job, and then another flashback of Job begins.

later, during another vision caused by Crowley mentioning the word tempest: "There will come a tempest then darkness and great storms and the dead will leave their graves and walk the earth once more, and there will be great lamentations... every day it's getting closer."

in the Hebrew Bible, Gabriel appears to the prophet Daniel, and explains his prophetic visions. in Good Omens though, Jim IS the prophet having prophetic visions through Gabriel.

when in the book shop with Aziraphale, Jimbriel starts to hum every day, which is what causes Aziraphale to search down the pub with the jukebox playing that song on repeat. we know from what Terry and Neil have said about every day that it’s the song of the apocalypse, but none of the characters know that, Gabriel included.

what does a song do?

each message the archangel of (fucking) messages delivers is unconscious. not how you’d expect him to live up to his name, right? of course, if they are actually God’s messages, it makes sense that they’re useless, vauge, and well, ineffable. one last thing: spiritually, Gabriel’s messages and prophecies are often believed to be delivered through dreams (or in other words, the unconscious)

edit: this post by @noneorother actually inspired me to look at the mythology of archangel Gabriel, so it’s crucial you check it out. i’ve also seen a post somewhere that posits Gabriel shouldn’t even have some of the memories that go by really quickly before the flashbacks of him and Beelzebub, but i lost the link to it.

Aziraphale

it’s hard to ignore the fact that Aziraphale’s name is similar to Raphael, and that we’re missing an archangel Raphael. i’ll link some analysis on the meaning of Aziraphale’s name and share a quote from Terry, but this has all been said before. i want to look at who Raphael is mythologically to see if there’s similarities in Aziraphale’s character, and i also want to see if we can find out the relationship between Gabriel and Aziraphale, and why the latter was a suitable replacement.

Terry said about the name's origin:

"It was made up but... er... from real ingredients. [The name] Aziraphale could be shoved in a list of 'real' angels and would fit right in..."

For instance, Islam recognizes the Archangels Jibril, Mikhail, Azrael (see also the annotation for p. 9 of Reaper Man ), and Israfel (the subject of Edgar Allan Poe's well-known poem of the same name), whereas from Christianity we get such names as Raphael, Gabriel, Michael, and Uriel.

NOW that that’s out of the way, who is archangel Raphael, the mythical figure?

Raphael’s name means “god heals.” it’s believed he helps people heal and overcome their struggles spiritually, physically, and mentally, and that he protects people on their journeys. he’s also considered to be the angel of joy, love, marriage, matchmaking, and travels.

as an example, in the Book of Tobit, God sends Raphael on a journey with a man named Tobias so that he can meet and woo his future wife. Raphael is also sent to heal her and Tobias’s blind, ageing father.

all the people and things i can count just off the top of my head that Aziraphale has healed or protected:

Anathema (healed)

Anathema’s bike (healed)

the dove he accidentally killed (technically healed by Crowley in the book)

Jimbriel (literally tells Jim he promised he would protect him)

Maggie and Nina when the demons enter the bookshop (tells them he will protect them)

bonus: in a scene cut from season 1, he stops a baby’s stroller from crashing

…and one he couldn’t:

you just have to look at Aziraphale smiling, especially at Crowley...

...to know that he represents joy and lo--

oh, but wait, he’s known for hooking people up, right? in case you forgot: Maggie and Nina va voom? originally his idea

similarly to the book of Tobit story I mentioned earlier, who did Aziraphale protect on his journey to meeting his beloved?

remember: the characters don't know they're being coded as anything and they don't know what kind of story they're in, so while Aziraphale didn't know he was going to be reuniting two lovers when he protected Jim, he played the role Neil made for him. it doesn't matter that he didn't know in the same way that it doesn't matter that Crowley could have (potentially) been powerful, or in the same way that it doesn't matter that Gabriel's messages were delivered unconsciously.

one more thing. Raphael heals people spiritually, physically, and mentally, right?

so is it any surprise that Aziraphale thinks he can heal the *ahem* spiritual corruption in Heaven?

we're going to tinfoil hat theory-land now ya'll, but I swear all of these observations are leading up to something cohesive...

Why did Aziraphale replace Gabriel?

i'll spare you all the long theories about Metatron's reasons, although i quite like the idea that Metatron was listening in ever since Aziraphale opened the portal to discorporate the demons attacking the bookshop, and he saw Aziraphale use his halo to declare war in order to protect Maggie and Nina. this shows Metatron that when pushed into a corner, or when it means protecting someone, he can force Aziraphale's hand...even to war.

But can we find a link between Gabriel and Raphael mythically to explain it instead?

if you've made it this far, you know i've got an answer for you. i withheld one detail about Gabriel earlier. in Christianity, he is often associated with blowing the trumpet at the end times to announce Judgment Day.

"okay, so?"

well, do you remember the quote from Terry and the excerpt from lspace I mentioned earlier? when mentioning the origins of Aziraphale's name, the excerpt mentions both angels in Islam and Christianity. the counterpart to Raphael in Islam, is Israfil/Israfel...

who blows the trumpet to signal the Day of Judgment.

"but Aziraphale wouldn't do that!"

he wouldn't intentionally do it. he's not a villain.

you remember who didn't intend to start the apocalypse in season 1, but who was there and given a role to play, regardless of whether he wanted to?

…the one who said no to heaven and hell and refused to be their pawn this time around when offered powerful positions by both?

Aziraphale, after nuking some demons with his halo, with painful foreshadowing: "I think I may have just started a war."

obligatory reiteration: the way the character-coding manifests is not literal, and it isn't always in the way you'd expect. there may be no literal trumpet. but i'm just pointing out the potential symmetry with season 1 in it being Aziraphale who "starts" apocalypse II.

one last thing: Raphael protects people on journeys, and helps them overcome their struggles — but now Aziraphale is on his own journey, and he will have to overcome his own moral struggles (ironically what Crowley helped him with)…alone.

Gabriel is clearly in charge, Michael somehow ended up with the duty officer gig because she's pretty cynical but also gullible enough that Gabriel can pull off some shit when he needs to, without her noticing.

Uriel rose through the ranks, and is capable. They don't like being held back, and see Michael as incompetent when Gabriel isn't there to pick up the slack.

Sandalphon, as I've said in a previous post, shouldn't be in Heaven, but God has a sense of humour and she likes to see how beings react. Gabriel has him tag along because God surely doesn't make mistakes and Metatron clearly had something to do with him staying.

Saraqael is impatient, gets the job done, but knows when to keep quiet. She recognises the Metatron because she snoops around and quietly collects information. She will use this at a later date.

All of them have the air of leadership. But Gabriel definitely had the role because he knew how to balance everyone that worked together, which is why it all falls apart when he leaves.

And if you include Muriel, we have our 7 named Angels: Gabriel, Uriel, Saraqael, Michael, Sandalphon, Aziraphale, and Muriel.

God does like sevens....

Writer's Guide Presents: Good Works Chapter 9: The Best Way Out is Always Through

Rating E for future chapters. These will be (skippable) self contained sections. Tags will be added as we get there, as well as per chapter warnings.

Summary:

It's 1987 London and anti-gay sentiment is on the rise ahead of the government's push to pass Section 28 to prohibited the "promotion of homosexuality" by local authorities -- including banning books and education in schools.

Why do Fell, low level government administrator caught up in an environmental corruption scandal, and Crowley, a "fixer" for a nefarious consulting company and reluctant queer community organiser, keep running into each other -- quite literally? Is it just romantic fate bringing together two middle aged "confirmed bachelors" who thought it was too late to find love, or is there some other connection? Can they figure it out? (Are they sure they want to?)

Chapter Excerpt:

The overflowing pile of files that covered his side of the shared desk was almost a welcome sight. He could lose himself in work. He didn’t need to think about anything else for a time. There had been entirely too much thinking happening the last few days. And now a tiny seed of an idea had germinated and was unfurling its way towards the sunlight, but it wouldn’t be rushed. Best not to poke at it too much.

He hung his coat on the rack, grimacing when the oversized sticking plaster across his palm pulled against his skin, and settled into sorting priorities.

He was head down, squinting at some poorly duplicated text when the precarious pile tipped over, spilling into a manila avalanche. Aziraphale scrambled to catch loose papers before they became separated from their folders.

“You’re to do these. Needed ASAP. Orders from above.” The dull monotonous voice was immediately recognisable and irritating even before Aziraphale was able to sit properly back up and catch sight of the hulking, shiny-headed shape of his least liked colleague. Elijah Sandalphon wore an ill-fitting tan suit the colour of cigarette smoke stain and neon chartreuse tie along with his customary dull sneer.

He had shoved aside the files, which Aziraphale had spent the morning organising into neat stacks (arranged by subject matter and priority), in order to dump an assortment of folders, spiral bound collections, and a few fat envelopes in the same space.

“What’s all this?” Aziraphale spluttered, nudging a few precarious items safely back from the edge. “I wasn’t informed about any–”

“You weren’t here.” Sandalphon said with all the emotional emphasis of a bag of sand landing on wet ground.

“I had to call in sick yesterday.” Aziraphale had awoken from uneasy sleep feeling terribly under the weather on Sunday – like the start of a bad flu with sudden moments of exhaustion, body aches, and a sore throat. Monday morning he had been forced to call in sick, but by the afternoon – after copious amounts of tea with honey, a bubble bath, and avgolemono soup delivered hot from the Greek restaurant two blocks away – he started finally feeling himself again.

“You weren’t here,” Sandalphon repeated in the same mind-numbingly dull tone. “No one else wants to deal with it and you–.”

“–weren’t here,” Aziraphale finished for him. “Yes, now it’s very clear. Thank you. I will see what I am able to get to.”

“A-sap.” Sandalphon spat as walked away, irritatingly leaving the door ajar.
