Blog post 02/22/23
I’m caught up with my reviews and hoping to soon be good with my deadlines. But since I love being overwhelmed, I signed up for a few books and bought others. I bet my facepalm was loud enough for you to hear it. So Kelly Siskind’s next book was announced and I signed up for it, of course. I’ve also added Kat Mizera and Brenda Rothert’s next collaboration to my schedule, even though there’s no…

📚December 2024 Book Review📚
Happy New Year everyone! And to end it up with only one day of delay here's the last reviews for 2024!
Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood
It was interesting but not my favorite Atwood so far. Grace's point of view was sometimes hard to follow, but the change of writing style to mark the difference of class and education between her and the doctor was a meaningful choice. I liked the mystery, the contradicting versions of what happened and the confusion of the poor doctor trying to unravel all this.
I am not opposed to open endings so the lack of answers at the end was not a problem to me but I understand that it can bother others. When you write about real events it's delicate to whether someone is or isn't guilty, better to let the readers judge by themselves.
Le Père Porcher (Chroniques du Disque-Monde #20) by Terry Pratchett
I wanted to reread it for Christmas season and, for a twist, to read the french translation by Patrice Couton. I don't credit translator enough but I always heard the highest praise for his work on the Discworld Novels. They are well deserved, the translation is amazing! Incredible work on the names, hilarious translations of the puns, it works so well! The story itself is just as good as I remembered, Death is really an amazing character.
Soie by Alessandro Baricco
I don't see the appeal. There is some nice writing, the repetitive aspects give it a nice fairy tale vibe but that's it. It barely mention the journey to Japan, barely mention silk. Which is the damn title. Instead you have a guy that travels across Europe and Asia to cheat on his wife. This wasn't was I hoped for from the title and blurb, I am just disappointed.
A Day of Fallen Night (Root of Chaos #0) by Samantha Shannon
I loved The Priory of the Orange Tree when I read it three years ago so I was excited to read the prequel. If you are like me and picked if long after reading book 1, I strongly recommend catching up on the lore before reading and if you haven't read book 1 yet DO NOT start with A Day of Fallen Night: this might be a prequel but it is not an introduction.
That said I loved it, convoluted and lore heavy as it is: it brings back all the places I loved in book 1 with even more details put on the world building and tradition. The multiple point of views are well used and they come together in really satisfying ways. Even if the threat is more or less the same as in The Priory of the Orange Tree the way they figure a solution and the fight was so good!
Retour à St Mary (Cosy Christmas Mystery #1) by Carine Pitocchi
Plain bad, and that's not the just me saying it, that's 100% of my local book club. Don't hope for a whodunit, the mystery barely qualifies as a police novel, the investigation is confusing and the culprit, obvious. This is also half of a Christmas cheesy hallmark romance. The bad half that is, because at the end Unsufferable Female Lead takes a train and just leaves behind Secretly In Love Childhood Best Friend Who Happens To Be An Anglican Priest For Some Reason Male Love Interest. It just sucks. Don't bother.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
I really liked it, the main character spiralling down pulled me down two and at several moments I was genuinely spooked. I read it a little too quickly to fully appreciate it tho I think, I will need to reread it again!
Prince Caspian (The Chronicles of Niania #02) by C S Lewis
I don't really have much too say. Just like the first book I had watched the movie a hundred times before and I was just too old for it. It is a cute story tho, I love the talking animals, especially Reepicheep.
Winter Spirits short story collection
Overall a nice read: this is an anthology featuring 12 different authors which means 12 different spin on the spooky christmas ghost story. There's only one I actively didn't like and four where I went to check what else the author had done because I needed to study how their brain worked. I originally picked the book because it features a story by Stuart Turton, who wrote The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. His story is good but I especially loved those by Laura Shepherd-Robinson, Andrew Michael Hurley, and Natashe Pulley.
The Agatha Christie Book Club #1 by C A Larmer
This was fun but not as good as reading an Agatha Christie novel. The investigation is a little convoluted, with clues that aren't really clear to the reader. And honestly if I were the characters being interviewed by the book club member twenty seven times in one week I too would have been annoyed and slammed the door. It was a bit frustrating that the pay off required to have biographical knowledge of Christie's life. It was all explained in the end but you couldn't really follow along. The book is good but my expectations were miscalculated, I'll adjust when reading the rest of the series.
The Stardust Grail by Yume Kitasei
This wouldn't be enough to call it Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade In Space but this is very much what it is. And more. It has some really cool element of world building and alien species with complex history and dynamics. The characters were very good too, the relationship between Uncle and Maia I was especially fond of, medic is touching too, I just took most of the book to warm up to Will. Emotional, action packed, full of twist and investigation and museum heist. Very warm recommendation.
Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo
Gut punches galore. It had been a long time since I read a horror novel that genuinely scared me and boy was I scared. I have next to zero knowledge of the US South but the description were so vivid I could feel the heat. Also a gold star for most fucked up gay relationship to Andrew and Eddy, this should be so hot but somehow it is, good luck to Sam unpacking this mess.
A Local Habitation (October Daye #2) by Seanan McGuire
This. Was. Wild. Never saw so many deaths and especially main characters narrowly avoiding death I was SO SURE I had figured it out and in the end I was barking at the wrong tree. What a ride. I am growing very fond of October Daye and I hope we get to see more of Quentin too because he's a good kid. I was promised by

Behind The Scenes: Tom Cruise & Steven Spielberg On The Set Of MINORITY REPORT
In a career filled with many great films, Minority Report stands as one of director Steven Spielberg‘s finest efforts. Visually impressive, energetically propulsive and complexly plotted – it’s a cinematic blockbuster with a grown-up edge. Released in 2002, the film was Spielberg’s first teaming with Tom Cruise (the pair would later make War Of The Worlds), and it captures both men at the peak of…

I read (and finished) 84 books this year, including 20 audiobooks. 6 were rereads and are not in this tier list.
And here's just a quick tier list of my six rereads.
Next, here are the three books I'm currently reading (technically, haven't touched The Witching Hour in a couple months now).
The City of Brass is a bit of a let down after loving Amina al-Sirafi so much but that's my fault for not looking it up at all (I didn't know it was a YA thing, y'see) but I'm not hating it. Taking me a while to get through though (which is a problem because I also have the second one out from the library. At least the library does charge a late fee anymore.). I'd say it enroute for a low 3 stars rating so far.
A Memory Called Empire I'm pretty early in yet (~100 pages/4-5 chapters?) but I'm digging it so far. I was a little worried when I noticed a glossary and pronunciation guide at the back, but I haven't needed it so far. It's feeling like a good 3.5 stars unless something changes wildly.
The Witching Hour, meanwhile, I'm having a miserable time with. I read it through in high school and remember liking it just fine, but this time...hoo boy. She wrote hundreds of years of history for the Mayfair family for what should have been her own personal series bible but then just ... stuffed it into the middle of the book. Can really tell this was Rice's first book where she told her editors to fuck off, I guess. (At least I think it is.) I'm not going to DNF it, but only because I'm trying to do a full series reread of the Vampire Chronicles books (including the new-er 3 Lestat books that I've never read) which the Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy unfortunately crosses over with a few times, so I'm stuck with it. I probably would have given it a 3-3.5 stars rating twenty years ago, but I'm going to be generous and give it 2 stars right now.
Finally, uh, only 6 of these books were actually from 2024, so here's my Top 6 2024 Books!
1. The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djèlí Clark
2. Mislaid in Parts Half-Known by Seanan McGuire
3. A Dark and Drowning Tide by Allison Saft
4. The Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong
5. Potions & Perils by Reck Well
6. A Tempest of Tea by Hafsah Faizal

Oh yeah I forgot to post it here too, but you can vote for the next trans artist I'll draw!
In case some of you don't know what I'm talking about: I want to create a huge kinda banner with a lot of trans artists on it, and I draw a new one for every 500 follows I get on Twitter as a milestone thingy!

Those in italics have five or more pieces of usable visual, written, or audio propaganda already. If you have any visuals like photos or videos, or if you have something to say in words, submit it to this blog before round one begins on June 25th!
If you don't see a name you submitted here, it's because most or all of their career was as a child/they were too young for the cutoff, their career was almost entirely after 1979, or music was something they only dabbled in and are hardly known for. There are quite a few ladies on the list whose primary career wasn't "recording artist" or "live musician," but released several albums or were in musical theater, so they've been accepted.
#long post#miss billboard tourney#i wasn't originally going to list them all but i decided to do so because there are so many without propaganda

peekaboo, i see you ( a spark snapshot )
fandom: elvis presley | elvis ( 2022 ) rating: g pairing: elvis presley ( fameless big daddy electrician/handyman ) x female original character ( lilly ) word count: 978 warnings: babies and toddlers being toddlers. a bit of baby talk. brief references to the past. this is tame, y'all. this is me being attacked by pictures and then oopsies i wrote it. author's note: welcome to what happens when people send me pictures of people with babies and i have fluff on the brain. as always special thanks to marina, christi and birdy for being my wives who made this possible in the first place. though this fic is a surprise to everyone today. but this is what you have to look forward to once i get the headcanons up. me just doing this sort of thing. special additional thanks to my baby girl bri who provided the first pic in the moodboard that caused this little snapshot. and thank you bee who gave me a quick read and reassured me it's not spoilers if i already mentioned in an ask that they have babies.
They're going to be late again.
Somehow, some way they're going to be late again. It ought to be embarrassing, Elvis thinks, how he's gone from a mostly punctual bachelor to a married man who can't be on time to save his or anyone else's life. Except, he figures that's what having kids does to you. He figures that's what happens when you have complete and utter joy in your life for the first time in so long. Figures it's what happens when your wife is a natural born mother, a maternal figure meant to have her own babies. Meant to cook as many buns as the lord sees fit to give them or as many buns as she wants. Corralling Jesse and Garon for church is not an easy task for Lilly as her belly swells more and more with their latest little bun- one Lilly swears is a girl that they're going to name Samantha- and Elvis takes it upon himself to deal with his two boys leaving yittle Miss Gladys in her capable hands. What he always forgets week after week until he hears the coos and the giggles from the front room of his little house is that his yittle Gladys and his lil darlin is that they're a force to be reckoned with when it comes to distraction. At least today Gladys has on shoes, a step up from last week when his girls were both showing off their little sooties to each other and giggling high pitched squeals of delight.
Gladys being able to stand as well as she can is a new thing for them but even as she's slowly mastered the art she still needs to hold onto something, too scared of falling on her little behind. When it comes to today she's chosen the curtain as both her item to steady her and her item to tease her mother with. The boys are quiet for once as their daddy stops in the doorway of the room to watch their mother and their sister play on the window sill.
"Where's my wittle Gladdy? Where's my glad wittle baby girl?" Lilly coos as Gladys moves the curtain over to hide behind it. "Oh no! I lost my baby girl! Maybe wittle Garon knows where his sissy went."
As if that's the cue, Gladys pops up from behind the curtain with a semi toothy grin and a noise that sounds like a giggle and a kiss all in one. "Mmm!"
Lilly feigns shock, before planting a kiss on Gladys's forehead and tickling her sides. "There you are! You hiding from Mommy? Hiding from mmmm?"
A nod with giggles is the only answer she gets back with a headbutt and more mmm's and kisses being given by Gladys. Lilly swears her heart is fit to burst the more kisses her first born daughter gives her and the more she hears her try and get out that first syllable to say mama. This is- she can't believe she thought this dream was as forgone as it was. Sometimes she can't believe that after everything with her and Elvis that they have what they have. That she had that first little boy of theirs and her twins and now this little one coming sooner rather than later. It makes her feel so warm from more than just the sunlight beaming on her through the window. As if to remind her that she's there, their latest child- their latest bun to be cooking inside her rolls, seemingly wishing they could play with their sibling.
"Calm down Samantha. You'll be here soon enough. I'll play peekaboo with you too. I'll lose both my wittle girls." Lilly murmurs rubbing her belly as Gladys tries to headbutt her only for Lilly to catch her and stand her back upright, grabbing the curtain in her own hands and hiding behind it. "Oh no, Gladys, where did mama go? Can you find me?"
Elvis takes a look at his watch and sighs, noticing they'll be at least ten minutes late and heaving himself off the wall, Jesse and Garon toddling along behind him, hands interlocked. Elvis grabs Jesse's hand to make a bit of a line and walks slowly to Lilly. Her giggles make sneaking up on her easy until he places a kiss to her hair and the boys grab at her legs.
"We're gonna be late, Lil," his voice is a murmur and should be admonishing but he can't keep the love and fondness out of it. "We can play later."
Gladys and Lilly both look up at him with nearly identical pouts and Elvis almost breaks then and there before shaking his head, "oh no you two don't. I ain't fallin' for those eyes from the both o'ya."
Lilly manages a sigh and turns her pout to Gladys, "we tried Gladdy, didn't we? Daddy's just being silly. We'll get him back won't we. When he's asleep."
It occurs to Elvis that he should be terrified of the way Gladys grins at Lilly, like they've hatched some nefarious plot to murder him in his sleep and instead all he does smile back at her. "Death by a baby and m'wife. Can think o'worse ways to go." Elvis lifts Gladys off the sill and sets her down on the ground before holding out his free hand to hoist Lilly up out of the chair. "Come on you three, let's get going. Already got the boys lined up. Grab Garon's hand, Gladdy."
As they watch Gladys toddle to her twin, Lilly gives Elvis a soft kiss and grabs Elvis's hand. "And I get to grab Daddy's?"
A hum is all that leaves Elvis mouth as he smiles, squeezing Lilly's hand once they leave the house. "Still gonna be ten minutes late. Gotta good reason t'give 'em this time, darlin'?"
"Peekaboo."

~ book recommendations ~
tagged by @lavampira! thank you <3 i'll tag... @faerune, @elvves, + @ravensgard i have multiple answers to these questions, of course, but i'm gonna try to stick to my more recent reads.
1. the last book you read:
Embrace Your Weird by Felicia Day. I was expecting more inspiration rather than confidence-building, but it was still fun (even if Day is extremely millennial-humor).
2. a book you recommend:
My latest 5-star read, Die a Little by Megan Abbott. It was just so perfect. If you follow me on Goodreads and read my review you know.
3. a book you couldn’t put down:
Pompeii by Robert Harris. It was actually for class but it was just so well-written and exciting (duh, it's about a volcano exploding).
4. a book you’ve read twice (or more):
I actually don't often reread... I've only ever reread The Hobbit, A Game of Thrones (because I was continuing the series), and Island of the Blue Dolphins (fave as a kid).
5. a book on your TBR:
I have 575 books on my TBR so I randomized my Goodreads shelf. The first one that came up was The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath.
6. a book you’ve put down:
Most recently: Dear Sylvia, Love Jane by Erin Hall. It was a mess despite the good premise.
7. a book on your wishlist:
I mean, every single book on my TBR is on my wishlist. I don't usually buy books either so 🤔 Here's another random from my TBR: Queens of the Age of Chivalry by Alison Weir.
8. a favorite book from childhood:
Besides what I mentioned above, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
9. a book you would give to a friend:
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. I think it has a broad appeal and I loved it (I love her in general).
10. a book of poetry or lyrics you own:
Cowboy Poetry: A Gathering. Haven't read it yet!
11. a nonfiction book you own:
A is for Arsenic: The Poisons of Agatha Christie by Kathryn Harkup. Also have yet to read, but probably soon.
12. what you are currently reading:
Three books! Life in a Medieval City by the Gies, The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, and A Storm of Swords by George RR Martin.
13. what you are planning on reading next:
Honestly idk! I don't usually plan on what to read next because the reading mood I'm in changes a lot. Maybe a 1930s mystery, maybe a middle ages history, maybe a short fantasy story. We'll see.

I'm overall pleased with the amount of reading I did this year. I was working full-time, so I didn't have as much time as I wish I did, but I got into a decent rhythm with it in the last few months especially. In terms of personal trends, I guess I can identify that this was The Year I Went Nuts For Yuri (amassing a huge treasure-trove of beautiful lesbian manga to read on my tablet), The Year I Got Back Into Fun Novels (books like Big Swiss and Milk Fed and Idlewild were such pure sources of pleasure), and The Year I Started Collecting Bloomsbury Classics (of which I've presently read very few, but they look ridiculously lovely on the shelf, and I plan on reading them all eventually).
