“We are committed to the INDIA bloc,” says TMC in West Bengal. Open to talk with top-brass

On Thursday, some insiders from Congress and Trinamool Congress party disclosed that the latter has refused to further negotiate the seat offering with the former for the upcoming West Bengal elections. For the uninitiated, The Trinamool Congress has already agreed to give two Lok Sabha seats to Congress in West Bengal. Now, they refuse to give any more but are open for discussion between the top-level leaders of the Congress party.

The seats offered by TMC are currently held by Congress Party which makes the deal tough to accept for the latter. A member of Congress’s alliance panel on Thursday accepted in a statement the same. The same member also told the press that TMC has asked for a seat in Meghalaya, arguing that it bagged 13.8% vote share in the last assembly polls, marginally higher than the Congress.

So far, the national alliance committee led by Congress veteran Mukul Wasnik has had meetings with Janata Dal (United), Rashtriya Janata Dal, Aam Aadmi Party, Shiv Sena (Uddhav), Nationalist Congress Party, and Samajwadi Party and held talks about the seats.

“Backed by data and the ground reality in Bengal, the TMC’s offer for two seats was communicated to the Congress three weeks ago. Therefore, at this stage, any other meeting with a committee will serve no purpose,” said a senior TMC lawmaker, who is involved in the party’s strategy.

From the TMC end, it is being signaled that Congress must accept that they are weak in West Bengal.

“In 39 of the 42 seats, the Congress got less than 4% votes. It won two seats and in another seat, it got less than 10% votes in 2019,” said the leader.

“The TMC has already conveyed our view to the top Congress leadership. It’s the same. We are committed to the INDIA bloc and pledge to work together to defeat the BJP. We sincerely wish the Congress leadership to acknowledge the limitations and weaknesses of the Bengal unit and allow us to lead the fight in the state,” said a second senior TMC leader, requesting anonymity.

Second Encounter Killing In UP Days After Witness In 2005 Murder Shot Dead

Faced with tough questions from the Opposition on the daylight crime, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that the government will crush those involved in the crime.

New Delhi: A man allegedly involved in the killing of a witness in a BSP MLA's murder case last month was shot dead in an encounter, Uttar Pradesh police said today.

According to police, Usman was one of the six shooters who pumped bullets into Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party legislator Raju Pal, on February 24. Two policemen on Umesh Pal's security duty, died of injuries later.

Shocking visuals of the killing captured by a CCTV camera went viral, prompting questions on the state's law and order situation.

Faced with tough questions from the Opposition on the daylight crime, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that the government will crush those involved in the crime.

Referring to the Chief Minister's remark, Shalabh Mani Tripathi, BJP MLA and former advisor to the Chief Minister, tweeted in Hindi this morning, "We had said we would crush them. The man who fired the first bullet at Umesh Pal was shot dead in an encounter."

Dr Badri Vishal Singh, medical officer at a Prayagraj hospital, said Usman was brought in dead. "We performed the examination, following which he was declared dead and the body was sent to the mortuary. He was shot."

Umesh Pal was a key witness in the murder of Raju Pal, a BSP legislator murdered months after winning the Allahabad (West) Assembly seat by defeating former Samajwadi Party MP Atiq Ahmed's younger brother Khalid Azim.

Atiq Ahmed, his brother and former MLA Ashraf are accused in the Raju Pal murder case and are currently in jail.

Hitting back at the Opposition amid the uproar over Umesh Pal's murder, Chief Minister Adityanath had said that Atiq Ahmed was an MP from Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party and said his government would not allow "mafia raj" in the state.

Today's encounter was the first against the shooters involved in Umesh Pal's murder. Police had said the driver of the SUV used in the killing had been shot dead in an earlier encounter.

For the five other shooters, state police had earlier announced a reward of ₹ 50,000. They have now raised it to ₹ 2.5 lakh.

Akhilesh and Mamata criticize Congress for losing Hindi heartland states in Assembly elections

Congress just faced one of the biggest defeats in the Hindi heartland states of India including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh in the Assembly elections and now they are up to face another major challenge- criticism and revolt from its allies in the INDIA Bloc.

On Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav conveyed stern messages to the Congress. Mamata expressed her inability to attend the next INDIA meeting called by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on December 6.

Akhilesh, on the other hand, during an event in Varanasi, said, “Ab parinaam aa gaya hai toh ahankar bhi khatam ho gaya. Aane wale samay mein phir rasta niklega (Now that the results are out, the ego has also ended. In the coming days, a new way forward will be found).”

He said that while it is super important to save the constitution and democracy it is also essential to understand the struggle of Samajwadis in Uttar Pradesh. “The SP’s fight in UP is bigger and the party SP has to make some big decisions. The talks will start from where they began. Wherever a party is strong the others should support it,” said Akhilesh.

Mamata, while talking about Congress’s defeat did not mince her words and said that Congress’s loss in the major states of India had been averted only if the party had agreed to the seat-sharing arrangement in place. “The Congress has won Telangana. They would have won Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan too. INDIA parties cut some votes and this is the truth. We had suggested a seat-sharing arrangement. They lost because of division of votes,” she said.

Talking about the December 6 meeting, she said, “I will be visiting North Bengal from December 6 to December 11. I was not aware of the meeting date on December 6. Had I known about the meeting date beforehand, then I could have rescheduled my visit.”
