On cloud 9 since last night, saw Two Door Cinema Club live and got Sam Halliday's set list and one of Kevin Bairds guitar picks!!!
The energy was amazing, hearing a whole concert full of people singing their songs and seeing the joy on the other members faces, especially Alex's.
Tbh I had no idea the band was so huge, the venue was packed and near sold out compared to Barnes Courtney and the Struts.

Okay this took a moment (or month) longer than expected but hopefully my rambling makes sense?? But here's my hopefully somewhat decent argument for Thomas lying about his debts. Also, apologies for no power point slides lmao.
Thomas very obviously falls into that classic privileged rich boy trope. He has little-to-no respect for anyone we see or hear him interact with that is of a lower social status than him (including but not limited to shooting Halliday's horse and then taunting him about it, his treatment of Amadin both on screen and through Amadin's recounts of him from childhood, spooking household staff for the fun of it, and how rude he is towards the men they hired to hunt down Nell), and his favourite past time appears to be drinking with his friends and causing trouble towards other people (with how George and Roxy explain on multiple occasions about Thomas's reoccurring behaviour in the village and towards Roxy, and how all the townsfolk are immediately on edge and cautious when he enters the Talbot in episode one).
That is all to set up that I think Thomas is actually rather intelligent, nearing or at what we give Sofia credit for, but prefers to just fuck around (and find out lmao).
Because multiple times throughout episode one he shows that he knows how to say the right things to get what he wants. He understands how people see him and he uses that to appeal to people of higher standing than him, ie his father and Poynton. Take when he makes his apology to his father to convince him to give Halliday the deed to the Talbot rather than to Nell.
Lord Blancheford: Since when were you interested in furthering a good man's cause?
Thomas: I've been unworthy of you. I've humiliated you, and I've allowed myself to be influenced by the wrong people. And I'm sorry. I want to put all of this behind me-
Sofia: So not content on turning them into orphans, you want to make them homeless now as well.
Thomas: Don't say that.
And also with how he opens up the conversation with Poynton about his alleged debts.
Thomas: So, just lately things have been difficult. And I have no one to talk to, and I know you're very busy...
Poynton: Tell me what's upsetting you, Thomas.
He also seems to have a tone of voice that he reserves for these moments (one that makes me giggle every time I hear the "I've been unworthy of you" lmao). I'm not the best with tone, but it always gives me a sort of childish impression? Like he's making himself seem almost submissive and helpless??
He fully has the awareness to know how his words and actions effect a situation for him, but he would rather use it to walk a tightrope that allows him to act as he does without facing (many) consequences. He probably prefers to keep expectations of himself low to not be held to any responsibility, but still gets to maintain not being completely written off as to not loose any privileges.
Because his father also appears very lenient with his behaviour. Though based on their first scene together (at the dinner table when Thomas is told his allowance will be stopped), the knowledge that Thomas was sent to boarding school and placed into the care of an uncle briefly to help straighten him out, as well as Lord Blancheford's covering up of his murder of Sam Trotter, I'd wager that Lord Blancheford views Thomas's behaviour as a threat to the family's reputation rather than any actual concern for him being a shit human being. And based off how Thomas reacts to being disciplined, I'd expect that proper consequences to his actions are few and far between.
So when it comes to Thomas actually facing these consequences, he jumps straight into using that intelligence to do as he's always done, side step responsibility.
Tumblr media
(Horrendous gif quality but like,,, that's the face of a man who is scheming. Dude started the scene drunk as anything with his bowl of pickles and visibly very quickly sobered up.)
Consider when Thomas first interacts with Poynton on screen, this also being the first time Thomas mentions having debts.
Thomas: I have debts my Father knows nothing about. Debts I can only settle when I come into my inheritance. At least because he's stopped my allowance.
Poynton: Ah.
Thomas: You once told me, that a man could sell his soul to darkness, and in return get anything, everything he desires. And that you are the person that can intercede in such matters. I want my estate Poynton. I want everything, now.
Obviously his end goal is to gain access to his inheritance, but he frames his motivator as concern over unpayable debts. Which, first of all I don't believe is his motivation, and secondly I believe that he's straight up lying about having any in the first place.
At face value this makes sense, he drinks regularly and no doubt seems the type of guy to engage in gambling and other such behaviours that could lead to gaining debts.
But Thomas actively commits the murder of Sam Trotter, likely (and rightfully) assuming his father would step in and cover it up. So why wouldn't he just have his father fix his debts for him as well? The cost wouldn't be a concern for Lord Blancheford, especially if Thomas was previously paying it off with just his allowance and with Sofia being able to offer a £40 reward for Nell's capture. The way that family is willing to wave around money to keep appearances, it wouldn't be a hard ask to pay off some debts.
Also, what tipped me off on my first watch through was how Thomas relays the situation to Sofia.
Thomas: I used to tell him things, like... that I was short of money and that I needed my inheritance. And he would say things like 'well Thomas, what stands between you and your inheritance?'
His tone reads to me like he is recounting that he told tales to try get what he wanted from Poynton. Choices are intentional in media, and I feel like you have to give credit to the writers in the way they've worded (and how Jake Dunn delivered) that line. He phrases it such that he's explaining how he manipulated and fabricated a scenario to get Poynton's help, rather than a confession to Sofia of debt being a motivator for reaching out to Poynton; "I used to tell him things, like..." vs "I confided in him...".
Sofia also does not appear to have any reaction to the debts, giving weight that she understands the debts were a lie to gain Poynton's help. She has control over the estate at this point, and would be aware of the financial situation enough to know if large amounts of money are being spent for unknown reasons. Also, Thomas is very obviously not in any position to be worrying about finances after killing his father. Although, this could also all be argued away with Sofia being more concerned about Poynton's involvement to be worried about anything else in that moment. Either way, that still doesn't disprove the idea that Thomas is lying about his debts.
In place of debt as a motivator, my view is that he's just a rich boy throwing a tantrum honestly. In episode one, all his actions outside of his focus of getting drunk and fucking around with his friends are all reactionary to the consequences of his actions. He reaches out to Poynton after being told his allowance would be cut to ask for help in gaining his inheritance. He chooses to kill Nell's father specifically to prove himself to Poynton after Nell stood up to him (something no other townsfolk had done) and embarrassed him publicly. And, he finally only kills his own father after Nell confronts the Blanchefords and Lord Blancheford promises to have Thomas face legal repercussions. He's intelligent enough to understand a situation well enough to decide when is an appropriate time to take action, how to manipulate a situation into a more self-serving one, and how to take advantage of opportunities when they arise. But he also only bothers to do so when he has been embarrassed, had a privilege revoked, or is being forced to live with his actions.
Idk feel free to share your thoughts on this, this is mostly word vomit onto a post but hopefully theres some substance to it lmao.

🕹️👨‍💻An escape is only an escape if you still live most of your life in reality👨‍💻🕹️
🛑SPOILERS AHEAD🛑
(YES EVEN IF YOU SAW THE MOVIE)
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
Read: January 27 -> January 31, 2024
BRA Score: 79/100
Favorite Quote: “No one in the world gets what they want and that’s beautiful.” - Wade, Pg?
~~~~~~~~
Book Gist: Wade is growing up in 2045, with nothing and no one to his name. His saving grace from a life of boredom and loneliness: The Hunt. The creator of the most used product in the world, The OASIS, left behind a challenge when he died 5 years ago that whoever can solve all the clues, pass every challenge, and collect every key will win his Easter Egg, which will make the winner richer than their wildest dreams, and give them full control over the OASIS. Wade isn’t the only one searching, millions of OASIS users have had their hands in the hunt, but the most dangerous is by far the Sixers of IOI, the quickly-monopolizing second tech company that will corrupt and destroy the sanctuary that Halliday built in the OASIS to turn it into another capitalist endeavor. Wade is trying to win it before IOI can, but if he is so poor he can’t even leave his school’s planet, how is supposed to solve anything?
Overall Review:
Pre-read:
The movie is by far one of my most favorite films of all time. I can pick it up at any point and immediately start quoting word for word. It’s my comfort film.
That being said, this read was highly anticipated, and I have not circled back yet to read Ready Player Two (though it’s on my list for next month because I am very excited that the sequel film was green lit).
Plot:
And, I think because I’ve lived the movie for years, I wasn’t made about how different the book was, BECAUSE my source material was the film, knowing the film was adapting the novel. I wasn’t attached one way or another on seeing parts of the book in the film. And because I have a mind for film, and how adaptions work, I could recognize why such significant parts of the story had to be changed, like the fact that there are 6 challenges (one per key and one per gate), or Daito and Sho being related, or iROK’s entire character (he drove me crazy tbh). To bring that to film would be such a struggle, because it’s so well layered and incorporated in the novel, with the pace and the plot structure, keeping that would not be plausible for a film timeframe and a bit too busy for the attention span of a film viewer.
Worldbuilding:
What I also really loved about the book was the detail! It was all so intricate and so reference heavy. It goes so much deeper in the book than it ever went in the film, and I love that. Because I’m the kind of person who can identify a detail as it is presented that’s meant to be hidden only to be very important later on, this book had me on the edge of my seat, I had no clue what would matter and what wouldn’t, which is exactly the reason why Halliday’s Hunt was so hard in the first place, so I really felt right in the middle of it all.
Romantic Sub-Plot:
Wade and Samantha’s relationship was a lot less interesting and a lot less necessary in the book, I felt. I didn’t really feel their chemistry much. I think their friendship only culminating in a relationship post-egg (or even moments before the final battle) would have been a lot better, especially if they had previously acknowledged that they had feelings for each other, but it didn’t feel right to explore that side of their relationship yet.
Wade:
Also!!!! Dude, Wade is so much fucking smarter than the film makes him!! He freaking infiltrates IOI (which is so much more awful in the book) and takes them all down from the inside and then freaking escapes!! Sam was legit just allowed anywhere she wanted and then walked out in the movie. He is a literal genius.
Cast:
Losing Daito IRL really made the stakes more intense than in the film, even with the stacks blowing up and the car chase. I was really sad for a while with that one, especially for Sho.
Cesar Romero and Nancy Kelly in Frontier Marshal (Allan Dwan, 1939)
Cast: Randolph Scott, Nancy Kelly, Cesar Romero, Binnie Barnes, John Carradine, Edward Norris, Eddie Foy Jr., Ward Bond, Lon Chaney Jr., Chris-Pin Martin, Joe Sawyer. Screenplay: Sam Hellman, based on a book by Stuart N. Lake. Cinematography: Charles G. Clarke. Art direction: Lewis H. Creber, Richard Day. Film editing: Fred Allen. Music: Samuel Kaylin, Charles Maxwell, David Raksin, Walter Scharf.
The title Frontier Marshal sounds like a generic Western, and it doesn't lie. It's about a stranger who comes to a lawless mining town and cleans it up with his fists and his guns. The stranger, played by Randolph Scott, is Wyatt Earp, and the movie is based on Stuart N. Lake's heavily fictionalized 1931 biography of Earp that established his legend as the man who cleaned up Tombstone by fighting it out with the bad guys at the OK Corral. So yes, you've seen it all before, in later and more celebrated films like John Ford's My Darling Clementine (1946) and John Sturges's Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957). Allan Dwan's film (from which Ford borrowed liberally) is a more modest affair. The famous gunfight in the movie  is almost over before it starts. Nor is Scott's Earp a particularly mythic figure; he even gets seriously beat up before he's able to seize authority in the town. If there's a mythic figure in Frontier Marshal it's Doc Halliday*, played with surprising charm and finesse by Cesar Romero. The character of Earp is also overshadowed by two women: Jerry (Binnie Barnes), a tough-as-nails dance hall hostess, and Sarah (Nancy Kelly), a nurse who has followed her former lover, Doc, to Tombstone, trying to save him from himself. Refreshingly, the two women are given significant agency in the movie, beyond just battling for Doc's affections. What distinguishes Dwan as a director is that he never seems to take for granted the material he's given to work with. Yes, Frontier Marshal is generic and predictable, but Dwan doesn't condescend to it: He gives the scenes snap and vigor, and he gets performances that are in some ways better than they're written. Barnes, for example, turns Jerry into a force to be reckoned with. It took me a moment to recognize her as the same actress who played the snooty Linda Cram in Holiday (George Cukor, 1938). Kelly's Sarah isn't the pallid schoolmarm played by Cathy Downs in My Darling Clementine, but a woman out to get her man. And if Romero, usually a lounge lizard type, ever gave a better performance I haven't seen it. I could have done with less of Eddie Foy Jr., clownishly playing his own father, and Chris-Pin Martin's milking of the stereotypical Chicano bartender role, but they keep the film lively. Scott is less memorable than the other players, but he provides a quiet stability to the film.
Usually spelled "Holliday," but the alternate spelling was used, reportedly because of concern about litigation from the Holliday family.
I am delighted to shine the spotlight on Mistletoe, Mutts, and Murder (Samantha Davies Mysteries) by S.A. Kazlo today~ About Mistletoe, Mutts, and Murder  Mistletoe, Mutts, and Murder (Samantha Davies Mysteries) Cozy Mystery 6th in Series Setting - The series takes place in Wings Falls, New York, a small town in upstate New York about 45 minutes north of Albany Publisher ‏ : ‎ Gemma Halliday Publishing (December 3, 2024) Digital ~250 Pages ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0D9ZKS19S Christmas is coming and children’s book author, Samantha Davies, and her lovable dachshund, Porkchop, are caught up in the holiday festivities in beautiful upstate New York. Sam’s parents, Chuck and Barbara, who have been enjoying their retired life in sunny Florida, have flown into Wings Falls to spend the holidays with Sam and meet her new boyfriend, Detective Hank Johnson. Sam is also busy hosting this year’s Christmas party for the Loopy Ladies, Sam’s rug hooking group. The Loopy Ladies know how to party and are enjoying an evening eating, drinking, and making merry... until Santa crashes the party. Unfortunately, this Santa is Sam’s next-door neighbor who her parents have had a long-running feud with. When not playing the local mall’s not-so-jolly old St. Nick, Leo Sayers is a newspaper reporter, and he announces to the group that he's written a damning article accusing Sam’s dad and his close friend, Herb Feinstein, of some very shady dealings in their past. To preserve peace on earth—and among the Loopy Ladies—Chuck and Herb escort Leo from the party. Only, not long after being sent on his way, Santa is found dead—lying in the snow, run over by a plastic reindeer, with a string of Christmas lights around his neck! Are Sam’s father and Herb now on the naughty list? If Sam can’t prove them innocent of murdering Santa, she's afraid their stockings will contain handcuffs and a one-way ticket to prison this year! O que é um filme Blue Jean? Blue Jean é um filme de drama britânico de 2022 escrito e dirigido por Georgia Oakley, em sua estreia na direção. É estrelado por Rosy McEwen, Kerrie Hayes e Lucy Halliday.
Sinopse: Em Newcastle, em 1988, Jean é professora de educação física em uma escola secundária. No caminho para o trabalho, ela ouve um noticiário sobre a proposta de legislação da Seção 28, mas desliga. Na escola, ela é reservada e fechada, e mente para os colegas de trabalho para evitar socializar com eles depois do trabalho. Ela visita regularmente um bar gay com seus amigos e a namorada Viv.
Enquanto Viv está no apartamento de Jean, Jean tenta assistir Blind Date, enquanto Viv se recusa, declarando que é propaganda anti-gay. A irmã de Jean chega sem avisar e pede que ela cuide de seu filho, Sam. Jean esconde a presença de Viv de sua irmã e minimiza seu relacionamento com Sam, o que irrita Viv.
Uma nova aluna, Lois, chega à escola. Mais tarde, Jean e Lois se reconhecem no bar gay, mas não trocam palavras nem reconhecem o encontro posteriormente. Lois se interessa repentinamente por netball e se junta ao time de netball de Jean, onde ela entra em conflito com outra aluna, Siobhan. Lois também passa mais tempo no bar e faz amizade com o grupo de amigos de Jean. Jean a confronta e diz para ela ficar longe, avisando que ela pode perder o emprego na escola se for desmascarada. Viv vê Jean e Lois saindo do banheiro e sai com raiva, acreditando primeiro que Jean a está traindo. Jean confessa a Viv sobre como ela conhece Lois, e Viv responde dizendo a Jean que ela está dando um mau exemplo para seus alunos.
Jean visita a irmã para o almoço de domingo, onde vê uma foto dela do dia do casamento. Ela pede à irmã que tire a foto, e a irmã revela que sabe que Jean é lésbica.
A chefe de Jean, Paula, encontra um exemplar de uma revista lésbica na mesa de Jean, deixada ali por outra pessoa, e Jean assume que Lois é a responsável. Siobhan provoca Lois após um jogo de netball, e os dois alunos brigam. Depois que Jean termina a briga, Siobhan beija Lois no chuveiro, que Jean vê, mas Siobhan afirma que Lois a agrediu. Apesar de saber que isso é mentira, Jean concorda e Lois é suspensa.
Jean tenta se desculpar com Viv, mas Viv diz que eles não podem voltar a ficar juntos. Ela também tenta fazer as pazes com Lois, mas não tem interesse em falar com Jean. Em uma festa de aniversário infantil, Jean se assume para o cunhado e um amigo, antes de cair na gargalhada ao sair.
Ela convence Lois a ir com ela para uma festa em casa, onde os amigos de Jean compartilham o "fundo do pântano", um fundo cooperativo para lésbicas da cidade. Uma amiga de Jean diz a Lois que as lésbicas com "empregos de verdade" como Jean contribuem para o fundo. Mais tarde naquela noite, Viv e Jean conversam em termos amigáveis, mas não se reconciliam.
No dia seguinte, Jean chega à escola com um sorriso no rosto.
Quando o filme Blue Jean é lançado? O filme estreou em 3 de setembro de 2022 no Festival de Cinema de Veneza e foi lançado nos cinemas em 10 de fevereiro de 2023.
