random, but you mentioned at one point that Sam has a kind of posh NIDA accent that a lot of Australian actors have, but that he loses it sometimes--I'm curious, when does he lose it? :)

Yeah! I'm not really being fair when I say it's an accent, because it's not really, it's more an affectation and you can hear it mostly in the way he'll over-enunciate. It's probably less noticeable if you're from overseas and not used to hearing Australian accents a lot, but I find it really obvious, especially talking to a lot of actors here at the theatre company I work at and seeing them slip into a stage voice, haha.

People tend to think of the Australian accent as one thing, but it's actually a pretty wide spectrum with regional dialects and tones. Linguists though generally separate them into three categories which is Broad, General, or Cultivated. There's a fun video (from not-a-linguist) about it here:

Sam I'd say has a general accent that can naturally get a twinge of an Australian lowercase-b broad drawl, which makes sense given he grew up between Sydney and rural Australia, given rural Australia's generally capital-B Broad. The NIDA accent is alllll cultivated, and Sam's not quite that (think Cate Blanchett's speaking voice for the full NIDA experience, haha), but he definitely shoots for it to cancel out the broad twinge sometimes.

You can actually hear him correct himself here between 'how I'm going to make the transition' and 'Gosh':

It's nothing big, it's more correcting his drawl for a more enunciated elocution, and he usually slips most when he's laughing, but there are occasions where he weaves in and out the whole interview. You can really hear it in the one below in general, but I've tried to timestamp it at two questions back to back, one which is a Real Australian Drawl before the second question of Very Clear Enunciation (the POV question is all general Aussie with a tiny hint of broad, the deleted scene question is NIDA cultivated, haha):

I don't know if these help, it's really audible to me, but I'm conscious that I am also Australian so I am highly attuned, haha. But yeah, I think you hear him correct himself a lot, which makes sense, because people from overseas can struggle with the Aussie drawl (but also yeah, there are a lot of class and regional connotations with it too here).

I mean I kinda figured that was the case unfortunately because we were getting a lot in promo for the season that we haven’t seen. Overall I’m kinda torn bc there’s so much to get done this season, I wouldn’t cut anything to add more tomgreg, but I miss my insane codependent business duo. There’s still the art gallery, though. I’m putting all my eggs in the art gallery basket.

I did, haha. His body type/musculature is really similar to one of my Pilates/Yoga instructors, and a few of the male regulars in my classes.

went to a museum of miniatures and i thought, as i was perusing the dioramas and figures; 'if anybody's gonna appreciate the detail with which someone sculpted these tiny little fried eggs, it would be nathan'
