Mãe Marta stands above her divination instruments, the buzios or cowrie shells. As she tosses them on her table, the position in which they fall indicates a response from the Orishas, which she interprets for the inquirer.
Yalorixá Mãe Marta de Oyá spends much of her time split between satisfying the demands of restless spirits and troubled souls.
As head priestess of the only Candomblé temple in Santo Antônio do Carmo, the historic center of Salvador da Bahia in northeast Brazil, the 45-year-old has her work cut out for her.
When not preparing feasts and festivals in the Candomblé tradition, she is catering to the needs of adherents to the faith who need a little guidance. She also conducts cleansings for those who believe their home could benefit from a better spiritual balance.

Semana Santa Spain
Semana Santa is observed annually in Spain during the week immediately before Easter and this year it takes place from April 2 to 9. Also known as Holy Week, Semana Santa is observed by Catholics to commemorate the Passion of Jesus Christ, his suffering, and death on the cross. Throughout the week, religious brotherhoods and fraternities carry out penance processions through the streets of almost every Spanish city and town. These activities attract visitors from outside Spain and are often advertised in hand guides and international fairs.
History of Semana Santa Spain
Semana Santa commemorates the Passion of Christ, that is, the suffering of Jesus before his crucifixion. The term ‘passion’ derives from the Latin verb ‘patior’ or ‘passus sum,’ meaning to ‘endure,’ ‘suffer,’ or ‘bear.’ In Catholic tradition, this often refers to specific events from the Christian Bible, such as the ‘Triumphant Entry’ of Jesus into Jerusalem. He rode into Jerusalem on the foal of a donkey, and as he did, the people greeted him as the Jewish Messiah, the ‘Son of David.’
When he arrived, he went into the Jerusalem temple and expelled the money changers who were doing business there. Later, Jesus and his disciples shared a meal known as the ‘Last Supper,’ from where Judas Iscariot left to betray Jesus to the religious leaders of Israel. Another important event was Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, where he prayed until his sweat became like drops of blood. Immediately after this, he was arrested and put on trial, then unjustly declared guilty. Jesus was subsequently crucified, but after three days, he rose again.
Religious brotherhoods and fraternities hold penance processions through the streets of Spain during Holy Week. The participants or brothers typically use conical hooded penitent gowns to conceal their faces. They wear shackles on their feet and carry wooden crosses or candles. The ‘pasos,’ which floats with sculptures that depict scenes from the Passion of Christ or the Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, are another fascinating aspect of the processions. Typically, marching bands, or ‘marchas procesionales’ in Spanish, accompany the floats. Holy Week in Spain is more than just a religious celebration; it also draws visitors from worldwide who come to see the processions. Typically, the processions are advertised at significant international fairs, hand guides, and on T.V.

Salvador’s Soul: Afro-Brazilian Culture and Carnival in Bahia
Tumblr media
Salvador, the vibrant capital of Bahia in northeastern Brazil, pulses with a unique cultural heartbeat, steeped in Afro-Brazilian heritage, mesmerizing rhythms, and colorful celebrations. Often referred to as the “Capital of Happiness,” Salvador’s rich history, lively streets, and famous Carnival make it a destination like no other. Here’s a guide to experiencing the soulful essence of Salvador, from its Afro-Brazilian traditions to the iconic Carnival that fills the city with life.
Begin your journey in Pelourinho, Salvador’s Historic Center, a UNESCO World Heritage site that reflects Brazil’s colonial past and African roots. Cobblestone streets wind past pastel-colored houses, while beautiful churches showcase intricate baroque architecture. Pelourinho, which once held a dark history as the location of slave markets, now stands as a symbol of resilience and cultural celebration. It’s also a hub for capoeira (the Brazilian martial art and dance) performances and Afro-Brazilian drumming groups like Olodum, filling the air with rhythmic beats and energy.
Explore Salvador’s deep-rooted Afro-Brazilian spirituality at Bonfim Church and the Candomblé temples. Bonfim Church, famous for its Senhor do Bonfim celebrations, is a site where Catholic and Afro-Brazilian traditions merge. Tying colorful ribbons on the church’s gates is a local custom symbolizing faith and wishes. For a closer look at Afro-Brazilian spirituality, consider visiting a Candomblé temple. Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion brought by enslaved Africans, is a powerful spiritual practice that honors African deities, or orixás. Witnessing a Candomblé ceremony is a memorable way to gain insight into the city’s deep cultural roots.
For a taste of Bahia’s culinary wonders, head to the São Joaquim Market. This bustling market is a sensory journey filled with exotic fruits, aromatic spices, and fresh seafood. Sample the iconic Bahian dish acarajé, a savory fritter made from black-eyed peas and filled with vatapá, a spicy shrimp paste. This dish, often sold by Baianas dressed in traditional white lace dresses, is a local favorite with roots in West African cuisine.
Visit the beaches of Salvador to experience the relaxed Bahian lifestyle. The city is home to some of Brazil’s most scenic beaches, like Porto da Barra, where locals and visitors alike soak up the sun and enjoy the tranquil waters. A bit further from the center, Itapuã Beach offers a more laid-back vibe, surrounded by palm trees and fresh seafood vendors. Spending time at these beaches offers a glimpse into Salvador’s connection to the sea and its coastal heritage.
No visit to Salvador would be complete without experiencing its legendary Carnival, one of the world’s largest street parties. Held annually in February or early March, Salvador’s Carnival differs from the Rio spectacle with a unique Afro-Brazilian focus. The streets come alive with blocos (street bands), electric trios (mobile stages with live bands), and samba-reggae rhythms. Olodum, a prominent Afro-Brazilian drum group, leads vibrant parades that fill the city with energy and pride. Dancing through the streets with locals, or simply watching the vibrant parades, is an unforgettable way to experience Salvador’s joyous spirit.
For those interested in art and history, visit the Afro-Brazilian Museum in Pelourinho. The museum highlights African influences on Brazilian culture, with displays of traditional artifacts, orixá statues, and artwork by Afro-Brazilian artists. It’s a fascinating space to learn more about how African heritage has shaped everything from Salvador’s art to its religion and festivals.
End your day in the lively neighborhood of Rio Vermelho, a cultural and culinary hotspot. Known for its energetic nightlife, Rio Vermelho is home to vibrant bars, seafood restaurants, and live music venues. Try the local moqueca, a coconut-based fish stew seasoned with dendê (palm oil), and enjoy live samba and bossa nova music. This neighborhood captures Salvador’s free-spirited, festive essence, making it a perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration.
Salvador offers travelers a journey through history, culture, and celebration, unlike anywhere else in Brazil. From its Afro-Brazilian roots to its world-famous Carnival, the city embodies a spirit of resilience, joy, and pride in its heritage.
For those looking to make the most of a trip to Salvador, agencies like Roomchai Limited, Bahia Adventure, and Brazil EcoJourneys provide tailored tours, immersive experiences, and guided visits to Salvador’s cultural highlights. These agencies offer opportunities to explore Salvador’s soul deeply, from intimate Candomblé ceremonies to culinary tours and Carnival experiences.

These tribes developed unique cultures and customs that have been passed down through generations. The Colonial Period In the 16th century, the Portuguese arrived in Brazil and began to establish colonies and trading posts along the coast. In Brazil, if you need answers, see a cowrie-shell thrower
A mystical Afro-Brazilian tradition thrives in a changing country
Tumblr media
Mãe carmem has long been in conversation with the orixás, Afro-Brazilian deities who embody the forces of nature. They dance easily into her thoughts and her dreams. But communing on behalf of others takes work. In a room on the outskirts of Salvador, on Brazil’s north-eastern coast, she takes out 16 cowrie shells—shaped like coffee beans, cream-coloured, with a seam of serrated teeth. She shakes them, murmuring incantations in Yoruba, a west African language, then rattles them onto the board. Oxumarê, the god of rainbows, rattles rain upon the roof in unison.
Brazilians who want answers often turn to jogo de búzios, the throwing of shells. Adverts for shell-based prophecy plaster lampposts; shell-shaking soothsayers set up stalls in malls. Adepts are pressed for predictions ahead of elections or football games—and consulted in private by participants. The 256 ways that the 16 shells can fall, each either open or closed, are read to diagnose and solve any problem.
Some Brazilians lampoon the practice. In February Globo, Brazil’s biggest broadcaster, was fined for airing a comedy sketch about “Cãodomblé”, a shell-reading golden retriever. Cãodomblé is a play on cão, or dog, and Candomblé, the biggest Afro-Brazilian religion. That hints at the racially tinged distaste for such traditions among some Brazilians, which persists even though 56% claim African descent. In 2021 91% of religious hate crimes reported in Rio de Janeiro were against adherents of Afro-Brazilian religions, who comprise just 2% of the state’s population.
But shell-reading has become “detached from religion”, says Augusto Waga, a divination scholar at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Baba King, an Ifá priest who runs a temple in São Paulo, reckons 70% of the 40,000 clients he has seen over the years did not share his faith.

ROOK ISLAND;
1970 - MOB DOG - 20 YEARS OLD
After the death of his abusive fiancee, Charley traveled to New York and joined the ranks of a growing offshoot of the Russian Mafia. He rose rapidly from his starting position of errand boy, pushing up through the ranks with his determination, work ethic, and quick understanding of the Russian language. During this time he traveled briefly to Kyrat to assist the future dictator Pagan Min and his boyfriend Mohan Ghale, helping settle a troop of Russian mercenaries that would later help overthrow the throne entirely and put Pagan Min in power as the king of Kyrat.
1973 - DARLING - 23 YEARS OLD
Charley meets a strange and impossibly tall executive at a business dinner between the Russians and a company known as Murkoff. The stranger is introduced to him as Garrett Raskolnikov, and despite a rocky start to their acquaintance, Charley finds himself falling in love with the doctor and moves into his home a few weeks later. Within months Garrett proposes despite the illegality of their relationship, Charley accepts and they wed in a private ceremony. Charley knows little of his husband’s work, the need for him to set the tone of the mob’s relationship with Murkoff no longer required. He continues to work, doing his best to keep his work local so he can spend time with his darling.
1976 - GOODBYE KISS - 26 YEARS OLD
Despite his talents of foreign relations, Charley decides to retire from the mafia and take up a quieter, gentler job at the local bookshop in the Montana town where Garrett’s company is centered in. Unbeknownst to him, his boss Grigori discovered his illicit marriage, deciding that Charley’s worth as an employee outweighed the cost of killing him. Now enraged by his decision to retire from the mafia long before his time, Grigori convinces Charley to go on one last foreign trip to Columbia to assist in securing a contract with a growing cocaine producer. Charley gives Garrett his wedding ring, promises to be back for good in three months, and leaves for South America, never to return.
1976 - THE DEATH OF CHARLEY HARRIS - 26 YEARS OLD
Charley is welcomed warmly to the Colombian plantation and enjoys the last dinner he’ll ever have as a whole man. His Russian boss, Grigori, already informed the strictly-Catholic and homophobic Francisco of his plans to leave the mafia and his illicit marriage, instructing him to do with the young man as he sees fit. Charley is shown to what he believes will be his room for the next three months on the plantation and falls into a deeply drugged sleep. He wakes in a tiny, dark room, deep in the hold of a ship.
1976-1977 - THE SHIP - 26-27 YEARS OLD
It takes a year for the ship to travel from Salvador, Brazil to the distant Indonesian island of Rook, during which Charley is subjected to squalid conditions and daily abuse. Forced to work a variety of demeaning jobs on the ship, any perceived slights or breaking of the daily-changing rules is grounds for severe beatings or other creative punishments including withholding of food and water. By the time they reach their destination Charley has lost a great deal of weight and suffers a number of trauma-based disorders that will haunt him for the rest of his life.
1977 - ROOK ISLAND - 27 YEARS OLD
The large ship stops several miles off the coast of the northern island and Charley is tossed onto a smaller skiff by the captain, accompanied by a few shipmates. As per Francisco’s instructions, they take him within a mile of the tropical island before shooting Charley in the left foot with a .44 caliber pistol and throwing him overboard. He has the option to be eaten by sharks and die, or swim and potentially live. Charley has little recollection of how he got to the distant island, but it’s likely he was rescued by a local fisherman and brought ashore.
Charley’s earliest memories of the island involve the Rakyat Temple and the royal family, several years before the birth of Citra and her younger brother, Vaas. He heals and is allowed to wander the temple, warned not to venture out into the jungle alone due to the predatory animals beyond its walls. It’s here that he accidentally gains immortality, unknown to him until several years later.
He discovers a water stained snapshot of him and Garrett on their wedding day, having forgotten it was sewn into the waistband of his jeans, and swore he would find a way to return.
1983 - THE PRINCESS OF ROOK - 33 YEARS OLD
When Citra is born the island is already well on it’s way to prosperity, mining had begun in the late 70’s and a young government was doing well with cash flowing in. Charley took an immediate shine to the infant and would be present for much of her young years. He does his best to help the family and the island but the fears that haunt him from his traumatic ordeal on the ship. He becomes good friends with the king who respects his desire to remain somewhat removed from the complicated workings of government and foreign affairs, but still provides advice when needed. He ventures out more, visiting the villages and befriending the locals. With their help he began construction of his treehouse that he will often go to in later years. His deep seated fears keep him from leaving on the commercial ships that haul Rook’s bounty to the mainland, he writes letters to his distant husband that he never sends out of paranoia that somehow Francisco will intercept them and find that he’s still alive.
1985 - THE PRINCE OF ROOK - 35 YEARS OLD
Vaas' birth is celebrated by the Rakyat and villagers as a further sign of hope for the future of the island. Charley begins to notice his lack of aging but assumes it’s just the island air and relaxed lifestyle of the people working some strange wizardry. He begins exploring Rook further and takes to swimming to alleviate the constant pain that comes from his badly crippled leg. He slowly begins to worry less about the distant Francisco and his ex-boss, Grigori. The ships coming in and out of Rook’s ports begin to look more appealing, a way back to his darling who undoubtedly believes him dead.
1986 - THE TYRANT - 36 YEARS OLD
As Charley decides to send his letters and leave, the ships stop coming to Rook. Uncertainty begins to infect the island like a plague and soon enough, strange ships are seen off the coast. As smaller boats come to the beaches, Charley goes with the king to see who the strange visitors are, and what business they have here on the islands.
Charley wakes hours later to the sound of rockets and gunfire, smoke clouding the air. The king is dead, riddled with bullets. As he makes his way inland he comes across more and more chaos of the yet-unknown Hoyt Volker’s forceful overtaking. By the time he reaches the temple the gates are sealed with the Rakyat and the rest of the royal family inside. As he’s forced to try and survive in a world plunged into terror and war, it becomes clear that the blame for this lies on his own head. He’s now an outcast to the Rakyat in a world that terrifies him, there’s no one to help him but himself.
1987 - 2019 - IMMORTALITY
It takes several more deaths before Charley accepts the curse and begins to revert back to the man he was when tossed from the skiff. People he formed friendships with are killed or enslaved, forced into prostitution or sold. Hoyt’s privateers control the northern island with an iron fist as work begins to build Hoyt’s empire on the southern sister island. More hellish men arrive, among them Buck Hughes whom Charley spends several months under the ‘care’ of before escaping with new scars, healed and now permanent. Deep seated traumas intensify and keeping meaningful relationships become nearly impossible as his own fears drive him away. Charley watches an island he once loved fall into chaos and disarray, Rakyat he once broke bread with now at best treat him like a pariah if they don’t shoot him outright. It isn’t until it’s far too late that he hears of the queen’s death, Citra’s overtaking of the Rakyat, and Hoyt’s brutal twisting of Vaas’ mind.

Semana Santa Spain
Semana Santa is observed annually in Spain during the week immediately before Easter and this year it takes place from March 24 to 31.

Why We Love Semana Santa Spain
Christ paid the ultimate price
Christ touched many lives
Christ’s followers heal the world
Jesus gave himself as a sacrifice for sins, offering his life and blood. He consented to the worst kind of beating, spitting, and killing, to demonstrate selfless love to everyone who accepts him as Lord.
While on earth, Jesus left footprints in the lives of all who met him. He lifted the oppressed, healed the sick, and raised the dead. Till today, his impact on the world has not diminished.
Jesus set an example for his followers, teaching them to love enemies and do good to all. This peaceful lifestyle can be seen perpetuated by Christ’s followers in our world today, centuries after his ascension to heaven.
