The obscure German animated dog movie brainrot strikes again.

If you've been following me for a while, you may recall that I did some character redeigns for the main cast of Millionaire Dogs back in 2019. I got inspired to update them after seeing some really cute redesigns that cookiedough31017 did of Bella and Velvet (here and here).

JD and Bella's redesigns are more or less the same as my old ones, but one change here is that I gave Bella a little silver heart necklace since all the other dogs have some sort of accessory. Chuffie's color scheme was made by playing around with the colors of his tail and mustache, while Sherman is directly based off of a red bullmastiff. I nixed Velvet's wig-like hair and gave her some sunglasses and a bead necklace since she likes fashion and looking cool, and Emmo is based off of a species of parrot native to Mexico since the character speaks with a Spanish accent.

making a simple model in blender and tracing it is really helpful for figuring out lighting and perspective, although it isn't necessarily a time-saver. i haven't done much purely-blender art in the past couple of years (u can see some older stuff of mine here) but the blender skills are a handy addition to my 2d art made in krita.

for this comic, having a 3d model of the background and characters was really helpful to keep everything logical and consistent, and it made it easy to play around with camera angles. for this, the background is all 3d and so are the snowflakes, but i gave it a little bit of paintover to make it look less obviously blender-y. for this, i got sick of trying to make the reeds an even width, so i drew a single perfectly straight reed in krita, used it as the texture for a curve in blender, duplicated it a bunch, then rendered it and imported it back into krita.

blender can be intimidating but knowing how to move the camera around, knowing the types of lights, and knowing some of the most basic features of modelling can get u pretty far. also the interface has had a lot of improvements over the past couple years.
