March 26, 2024 - Black-cowled Saltator (Saltator nigriceps) Found in the Andes in southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru, these birds in the tanager family live in and around mountain forests and scrub. Foraging alone or in pairs and sometimes joining mixed-species flocks, they are thought to eat seeds, insects, and berries, like the closely related Golden-billed Saltator, though their diet has not been studied. Nothing is known about their breeding behavior, but it may be similar to that of their close relatives which build cup-shaped nests in shrubs.

What is a gamergate?
Friendly reminder about the word #gamergate
A "gamergate" (pronounced like "gamete") is a mated worker ant with the potential to become a queen of the colony. This is believed to be how early ant colonies worked before the physical differences between queens and workers became more pronounced in the majority of ant species. Diacamma, Harpegnathos and Ophthalmopone genus ants still have this ability.
This is the *only* significant meaning the word "gamergate" has had and will ever have.
I'm sorry... but look at her. She's like a cartoon character. "harpos" are very popular among antkeepers and their ability to choose new queens makes for interesting colony dynamic. They duel each other with their long mandibles to decide who will be queen.
And they can jump!

“Since the movie’s over..”
"You can taste my blood, yes."
*Felix chuckles.*
*Salta is mildly concerned but doesn't question.*

BOTD: Cinnamon-bellied Saltator
Photo: Ad Konings
"Fairly common, but often retiring, in tropical lowlands of both drier and more humid areas. Favors forest edge, second growth thickets, hedges, and tangles, especially with morning glory flowers, which it munches quietly. Told from other saltators in Mexico and Central America by the grayish (not golden-green) upperparts, bolder white eyebrow, and plain breast. Immature looks slightly different, with a yellowish wash to the face and upperparts. Listen for sweet song with long slurred whistles."

January 28, 2024 - Orinocan Saltator or Orinoco saltator (Saltator orenocensis) These tanagers are found mostly in dry woodlands and brush, sometimes near water, in parts of Colombia and Venezuela. Foraging in small groups of two or three birds, they feed on flowers, fruits, seeds, and leaves, as well as some insects. Though little is known about their breeding behavior, several of their loose cup-shaped nests built from grasses were found in May and June. Females lay clutches of two eggs.

Let's learn ANTatomy!
The lower portion of the antennae is called the funiculus. (in other parts of biology a funiculus is a bundle of nerve fibers, and this is the most sensitive part of the ant, so it makes sense... also what could be more FUN that tapping everything with your antennae?)
The base of the antenae is called the scape.
The coxa is the joint that connects her ant legs to her mesonoma, aka thorax.
Ant feet don't have toenails, they have tarsal claws.
