What's a Shortz Number?
While I was researching Salomon Numbers for last week’s post, I discovered another crossword-centric number system with an S-name attached. The Shortz Number. Actually, I found several of them. Allow me to elucidate. XWordInfo lists a constructor’s Shortz Number as a reflection of when that constructor was first published in a daily puzzle during the Shortz Era of The New York Times…

Chatelaine (Ornamental Chain) with the Figure of Judith with the Head of Holofernes
19th century
Germany
“This piece appears to date from the 19th-century, it may be an unfinished work. The central portion of the architectural strap work and the figure of Judith are very similar to a number of double-sided renaissance revival pendants designed and executed by Reinhold Vasters in Aachen, Alfred Andre and Henri Husson in Paris, Salomon Weininger in Vienna, and Gabriel Hermeling in Cologne, as well as others, during the second half of the 19th century.”

The full Moon that happens nearest to the fall equinox (September 22nd or 23rd) always takes on the name “Harvest Moon.” Unlike other full Moons, this full Moon rises at nearly the same time—around sunset—for several evenings in a row, giving farmers several extra evenings of moonlight & allowing them to finish their harvests before the frosts of fall arrive.
• While September’s full Moon is usually known as the Harvest Moon, if October’s full Moon happens to occur closer to the equinox than September’s, it takes on the name “Harvest Moon” instead. In this case, September’s full Moon would be referred to as the Corn Moon.
This time of year—late summer into early fall—corresponds with the time of harvesting corn in much of the northern United States. For this reason, a number of Native American peoples traditionally used some variation of the name “Corn Moon” to refer to the Moon of either August or September.

The name Mabon comes from the Welsh/Brythonic God Mabon Ap Modron, who's name means "Divine/great Son", However, there is evidence that the name was adopted in the 1970s for the Autumn Equinox & has nothing to do with this celebration or this time of year.
• Though many cultures see the second harvest (after the first harvest Lughnasadh) & Equinox as a time for giving thanks before the name Mabon was given because this time of year is traditionally when farmers know how well their summer crops did & how well fed their animals have become. This determines whether you & your family would have enough food for the winter. That is why people used to give thanks around this time, thanks for their crops, animals & food
Some believe it celebrates the autumn equinox when Nature is preparing for the winter months. Night & day are of equal legth  & the God's energy & strength are nearly gone. The Goddess begins to mourn the loss she knows is coming, but knows he will return when he is reborn at Yule.
Related festivals:
• Sukkot- Is a Torah-commanded holiday celebrated for seven days, beginning on the 15th day of the month of Tishrei. It is one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals on which Israelites were commanded to make a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. Originally a harvest festival celebrating the autumn harvest, Sukkot’s modern observance is characterized by festive meals in a sukkah, a temporary wood-covered hut, celebrating the Exodus from Egypt.
• Mid-Autumn festival- September 17th
Is also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival. It is a traditional festival celebrated in Chinese culture, similar holidays are celebrated by other cultures in East & Southeast Asia. It is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture; its popularity is on par with that of Chinese New Year. The history of the Mid-Autumn Festival dates back over 3,000 years.  On this day, it is believed that the Moon is at its brightest and fullest size, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of Autumn.
During the festival, lanterns of all size and shapes – which symbolize beacons that light people's path to prosperity & good fortune – are carried & displayed. Mooncakes, a rich pastry typically filled with sweet-bean, egg yolk, meat or lotus-seed paste, are traditionally eaten during this festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is based on the legend of Chang'e, the Moon goddess in Chinese mythology.
• Thanksgiving- This is a secular holiday which is similar to the cell of Mabon; A day to give thanks for the food & blessings of the previous year. The American Thanksgiving is the last Thursday of November while the Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated in October
• The Oschophoria- Were a set of ancient Greek festival rites held in Athens during the month Pyanepsion (autumn) in honor of Dionysus. The festival may have had both agricultural and initiatory functions.
-Amidst much singing of special songs, two young men dressed in women's clothes would bear branches with grape-clusters attached from Dionysus to the sanctuary of Athena Skiras & a footrace followed in which select ephebes competed.
Ancient sources connect the festival and its rituals to the Athenian hero-king Theseus & specifically to his return from his Cretan adventure. According to that myth, the Cretan princess Ariadne, whom Theseus had abandoned on the island of Naxos while voyaging home, was rescued by an admiring Dionysus; thus the Oschophoria may have honored Ariadne as well. A section of the ancient calendar frieze incorporated into the Byzantine Panagia Gorgoepikoos church in Athens, corresponding to the month Pyanopsion (alternate spelling), has been identified as an illustration of this festival's procession.

Do we know the favorite books that the French revolution figures liked to read? (It could be anyone, Robespierre or Saint just or Louis xvi it doesn't matter).
Much like this old ask about revolutionaries’ favorite dishes, I can’t say I know of any instance of someone exclaiming: ”this is 100% my favorite book,” but at tops people mentioning books that they thought were good or bad:
In his memoirs, Brissot writes he’s picking up Rousseau’s Confessions for the sixth time, so I guess that could qualify as a favorite book? send help
We have this list of books seized at Robespierre’s place after his death.
According to the memoirs of Élisabeth Duplay, Robespierre would read ”the works of Corneille, Voltaire and Rousseau” for her family in the evenings.
In a short biography over Desmoulins written in 1834, Marcellin Matton claims his favorite book was René Aubert de Vertot’s Histoire des révolutions arrivées dans le gouvernement de la République romaine (1719), of which he always carried a copy. Matton is an infamous romanticizer it’s from him we have the stupid leaf myth for example, but I’m willing to give him some leeway here since he could have obtained the information from Camille’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law, who were his friends:
In one of his first classes, he received Vertot's Révolutions romaines as a prize. Reading this work transported him with admiration; in the future, he always had a volume in his pocket. It was for him an indispensable companion, it was his vade mecum. He used or lost at least twenty volumes. It is perhaps to this excellent work and to the particular work that he did on the discourses of Cicero and especially on his Philippics, that we owe the lively and sharp style which distinguishes all the writings coming from the pen of Camille .
Desmoulins was however less fond of Rousseau’s Confessions, in number 55 (December 1790) of Révolutions de France et de Brabant he admits that he abandoned the book after getting infuriated by it:
Not that I idolize J.J. as I did in the past, since I saw in his Confessions that he had become an aristocrat in his old age. How far he was from looking at an Alexander with the pride of this Cynic, to whom he is compared, and how painfully I saw that he united the opposite faults of Diogenes and Arisippus! It is a pleasant thing to hear the author of the Social Contract protest in his Confessions about the simplicity of the commerce of such great lords (M. and Madame de Luxembourg) he cries with joy, he wants to kiss the feet of this good marshal, because he wanted to accompany one of his friends, an office clerk, for a walk. Is there anything smaller, more ridiculous? I received, he says elsewhere, the greatest honor that a man can receive, the visit of the Prince de Conti, (an honor that Rousseau shared with all the girls of the Palais-Royal.) At this point I tossed away the book out of spite, and I admit, that I had to reread the speech on equality of conditions, and Julie's novel, in order to not hate the philosopher of Geneva, like Durosoy and Mallet du Pan; for the same principles, in the mouth of such a great man, are more condemnable and worthy of aversion than in the mouths of our two gazetteers, whom God created poor in spirit, and predestined as such to the kingdom of heaven.
In a diary kept over the summer of 1788, Lucile Desmoulins mentions reading L’Âge d’Or (1782) by Sylvain Maréchal (of which she also copied two verses, Le Trésor and Le contrat de mariage devant la nature, in a notebook the year earlier), Les Idylles et poèmes champêtres (1762) by Salomon Gessner, L’Hymne au soleil, suivi de plusieurs morceaux du même genre qui n’ont point encore paru (1782) by Abbé de Reyrac (where she wrote down the verse La Gelée d’avril), Nouvelles lettres anglaises, ou Histoire du Chevalier Grandisson (1754) by Samuel Richardson and  Les Noces patriarchales, poëme en prose en cinq chants (1777) by Robert Martin Lesuire.
In his memoirs, Buzot mentions enjoying the works of Rousseau and Plutarch:
With what charms I still remember this happy period of my life which can no longer return, when, during the day, I silently roamed the mountains and woods of the city where I was born, reading with delight some works of Plutarch or of Rousseau, or recalling to my memory the most precious features of their morality and their philosophy. Sometimes, sitting on the flowering grass, in the shade of some thick trees, I indulged, in a sweet melancholy, in the memories of the sorrows and the pleasures which had in turn agitated the first days of my life. Often the cherished works of these two good men had occupied or maintained my vigils with a friend of my age whom death took from me at thirty, and whose memory, always dear and respected, has preserved from many errors!
Wow any chance you can sound even more like an 18th century man stereotype, Buzot?
…and that’s basically all I can come up with for the moment. But add on if you know anything more! @louis-antoine-leon-saint-just @lazarecarnot maybe you would like to share your favorite books with us if you have any?

I doubt that anything will ever topple Salomon Sulzer’s glorious originally-in-walz-time “Aleinu” in American synagogues.  But that’s not the only Aleinu out there.  Here’s a Moroccan version, from the city of Tétouan, just south of Gibraltar.  A number of years ago, a friend asked me to find him a version of Aleinu that wasn’t so “chipper” as the Sulzer version.  I was unfortunately unable to give him this version, but I wonder if it’s closer to what he had in mind.  It’s certainly beautiful and a bit meditative, and I think he probably would have enjoyed it.

ANDREA FERRO Explains Why It's Important For LACUNA COIL To Still Release Full-Length Albums
Tumblr media
In a recent interview with Damian FitzGerald of V13 Media, Andrea Ferro of Italian metallers LACUNA COIL was asked if he and his bandmates still like putting out full-length albums or if they are starting to think about maybe focusing on singles going forward. Andrea said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): " I think the rock music and metal in particular is one of the few genres where it still is important to release an album. But it's the only one probably, because I don't see that for trap music or stuff like that. But we still even sell quite a lot of physical products, between the vinyls and the digipack, the special edition mostly. Obviously not so much the jewelcase, but the other more complete versions are still very researched by the fans. So it's still worth it, for sure."
He continued: "I think it's still important for us to work a certain number of songs. It doesn't have to be exactly one album. So it could be also five or six songs — maybe not necessarily 12 or 10 — but for us, the more we songwrite, the more it gets better for us. Usually the last songs you do are the best ones because they're the ones that move away from what you've done in the past a little bit so they sound a little bit more interesting without — obviously, we're not gonna change the style completely, but at least you have more time to experiment by songwriting. So it's important for us in that sense and in that sense that we wanna bring out a certain number of topics that we wanna talk about. But obviously we could also just release single by single and just do four or five singles and that's it. It would still make it work maybe for a tour or for a festival appearance, but for us we still like to do the full record and having to work on multiple layers. Because sometimes you just start and then the more you work, the more you go into interesting things and you find out some gems that maybe weren't coming out in the beginning. So, for us, it's still worth it. Maybe not as much for everybody else."
LACUNA COIL will release its tenth studio album, "Sleepless Empire" — the band's first collection of new songs since 2019's "Black Anima" — on February 14, 2025 via Century Media Records.
Inspiration to create "Sleepless Empire" came during the sessions for "Comalies XX" (2022),the acclaimed remake of LACUNA COIL's breakthrough third record "Comalies". Writing and recording took place in northern Italy between Milano (the band's hometown) and Como, where SPVN Studios are located. As with their previous albums, production was done in house with Marco "Maki" Coti Zelati at the helm, and artwork was hand curated by the talented Italian artist Roberto Toderico. Two other very special talents enrich the album, namely the guest vocalists: LAMB OF GOD's Randy Blythe on the song "Hosting The Shadow" and NEW YEARS DAY's Ash Costello on "In The Mean Time".
Last month, Italian guitarist/producer Daniele Salomone confirmed that he has joined LACUNA COIL as the replacement for the band's longtime guitarist Diego Cavallotti.
Salomone made his live debut with LACUNA COIL on August 4 at the Rockstadt Extreme Fest in Râșnov, Romania.
This past June, LACUNA COIL announced Cavallotti's departure. Diego, who joined LACUNA COIL in 2016, initially as a fill-in guitarist following the exit of Marco "Maus" Biazzi, later said in a social media post that "this decision is not the result of my dissatisfaction or desire to explore new opportunities."
When LACUNA COIL announced Cavallotti's exit on June 17, the band wrote in a statement: "As we step into a new cycle, writing and recording our next album, we are parting ways with Diego 'DD' Cavallotti. We thank him for the many unforgettable moments shared over the years and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours.
"All future live plans remain unchanged and the new songs are taking form, we can't wait to share them with our fans."
Cavallotti and Salomone played together in the Italian metal band INVERNO, which released its debut album, "Stasis", in December 2023.
LACUNA COIL will release its tenth studio album, "Sleepless Empire" — the band's first collection of new songs since 2019's "Black Anima" — on February 14th, 2025 via Century Media Records.

Constructors, What's Your Salomon Number?
I’m a nerd. I know that probably comes as a huge shock to you, fellow puzzler. Positively astonishing that a guy who has spent over twenty years making puzzles — more than ten writing about them here — and even more years running D&D games, LARPs, escape rooms, and murder mystery dinners is a nerd. But that’s the truth. And as a nerd, I love watching people quantify things in strange ways.…

"It's the final push! Their forces are receding!!" Salomon shouted. "All hands on deck, troops! Keep going!"
The Kingdom Salmonids and Grizzco employees worked together to stop the coming waves of rebel Salmonids, and after fighting for almost three days, their efforts were paying off. Their numbers began to thin, and Horrorboros was showing up less due to her wounds.
"Just a little more..." Mirage grunted, aiming their Tri-Stringer upwards to snipe a Steelhead that was about to launch a bomb.
As the third wave came to a close, that ear-piercing, horrific screech was heard once more.
"It looks like Horrorboros wants to visit us one last time." Salomon huffed, looking at the moving waters.
Horrorboros erupted from the water. flying through the air and looking directly at the Salmonid royalty.
"Ugh...I've truly never met royals as persistent as you...not even King Sallivan was this fierce, and he's the reason why we have an everlasting conflict to begin with..." She hummed.
"Tell me, Horrorboros. Or Nagi, rather." Salomon boomed. "The order of King Salmonids hasn't been seen in years, and now suddenly one of them fights for the rebels that threaten the order?! What is the meaning of this?!"
"Just because I am one of the almighty King Salmonids does not mean I am forced to align with the principles of one side. I'm on their side because of my own desires~" Nagi giggled. "Though I will admit when I'm at a loss. Phooey. None of you make this any fun."
"Then do everyone a favor and retreat." Mirage replied.
"Hmmm....perhaps, if I'm given something I want..." She looked around the academy. "...Oh? Who's that fighting over there so valiantly...?"
Salomon and Mirage looked over to where she was setting her gaze on to see...
"E-ESS?!" Mirage exclaimed stumbling over to look over the side of a ledge from above. "ESS, GET OUT OF HERE! I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO STAY HOME!!"
"No, Mirage! If I'm in the center of this conflict, then I need to face it head on and not hide in fear!" She shouted back, looking up at them. "I need to show them who's side I'm on!!"
"Ooooh, you must be Cinny-poo's kid sister! They've been moaning and whining for you to come home~" Nagi cooed. "So..."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Let her go!!" Mirage shouted.
"No, I don't think I will. I've decided...this is what I want in an exchange. You don't mind, do you?"
"E-Ess! CRUESA!!"
"Rebel forces, time for a retreat! We didn't take Inkblot on this day, but we have Lady Eosa!"
"N-NOOOO!!"
"Mirage! Calm yourself!" Salomon yelled over them, holding the squid-salmon hybrid back from trying to run directly into the rebel forces.
"Dad, let me go! They're taking Ess! LET ME GO!" They exclaimed, struggling against the Salmon king's strength to no avail. "You can't let them take her!!"
"..."
"D-Dad?!"
"....Let them retreat."
"DAD, YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS!!"
"Mirage, I'm sorry. But please try to understand my decision."
"ESSSSS!!"

Books 2024.
Here are the books I've read this year.
The romantic comedies that I still can't believe they were published.
Mr. Wrong Number by Lynn Painter.
Happily ever after by Lynn Painter.
Both books, if I could give them negative stars, I would.
Not like the movies. Kelly Winfrey.
The effort for flawed characters is loable, but that's about it.
One-star romance. Laura Hankin.
One star indeed. The narrator is shrill, and that is a term that as a staunch feminist, I never use in a negative connotation. Until I read this book.
The Fiancé Dilemma. Elena Armas.
I thought the obsession US romcom book clubs have on this author was because she was a good writer. I was wrong. by god, was I wrong.
Kissing Tolstoy. Penny Reid (Novella).
I was happy to see a writer debunking this holy male writer in order to explain a very inappropiate relationship between a professor (a russian, very white, very controlling man) and a student (who loses all agency in this short book). The result is a red flag book.
Love hacked. Penny Reid.
Again, the red flags! So many red flags!!
Ten ways to seduce your boyfriend. Penny Reid.
Right on cue. Falon Ballard.
Till heist do us part. Sara Desai.
Unnecessarily long, with a confusing plot and characters who dilute and are so weak I almost stab my eyes with a fork.
It happened one summer. Tessa Bailey.
The clocky app book section of the internet will tell you this is hot and steamy. I will tell you that the scene where they have sex in a hospital is not only inappropiate (of all the damn places, the place where sick people go to?!), it's just...ew.
To woo and to wed. Martina Writers.
Not only is this book terrible, it's a blatant copy of Bridgerton with a very lazy, terrible approach to Austen.
Lush Lives. Vanessa Lyon.
I never understood the plot of the book nor the characters. Yay for disabled queer love, but it felt I was ticking a list on diversity.
Books that I forgot I'd read until I check my reading apps (I Am Angry I Read Some Of Them).
The Rosie Project. Graeme Simsion.
Do not let men write romcoms.
The Shaadi set-up. Lilie Vale.
I'm not of indian descent, but I'd take offense if I were.
Love and other flights delays (compilation, novella). Denise Williams.
Token. Beverly Kendall.
A crown of ivy and glass. Claire Legrand.
I am an adult person who no longer hates read. Yet, I found myself despising this book so much that the hate lead me to pre-order the following book in this series.
The wedding date. Jazmine Guilroy.
If this author ever does a refund, I'd never accept it because no money can ever give me back the hours I wasted reading this.
The Bridgerton series because come on, this is me.
An offer from a gentleman.
The offer! The cinderella plot and then the attempt to make it a plot twist and failing! I am here for this and I can't wait for the tv series.
To sir Philip, with love.
Eloise, I don't think we was ready for this. She became a therapist, a savior, and a mom in like 3 days. She also lost her agency, which was barely noticeable in the books and I am so ready for the season. This is a fantastic hot mess.
Good romcoms only women and queer people will enjoy.
The roomate fiasco and The fake boyfriend fiasco. Both by Talia Hibbert.
Long live this amazing author who gives us red flags, beige flags, sex toys, consensual relationships, fucked up pasts, therapy and redemption.
Say you'll be mine. Naina Kumar.
The ending felt extremely rushed, but the book is sweet and funny. What a delightful read.
Seven days in june. Tia Williams.
The summer of everything. Julian Winters.
Business Casual. B.K. Borison.
Do you take this man. Denise Williams.
Just like you. Nick Hornby.
Fantastic reads that made me laugh and weep and I couldn't stop reading until I was done.
Words in deep blue. Cath Crowley.
The Dating plan. Sara Desai.
The marriage game. Sara Desai.
Summer romance. Annabel Monaghan.
Past, present, future. Rachel Lynn Salomon.
What a lovely conclusion to a book that I think didn't need a sequel. It's just wonderful reading for a YA audience.
The singles table. Sara Desai.
The thing is this book isn't bad, it's just that the characters needed a few pages to discuss therapy. Like, I was worried about fictional people's mental health.
Technically yours. Denise Williams.
I liked it so much I'll probably read it again.
The Holy Crap This Is So Good books.
We could be so good. Cat Sebastian.
The most beautiful love story I've read in a while. I was invested. I want to believe this isn't just fiction. Queer love!
Funny Story. Emily Henry.
The chokehold Henry has on us is deep and wonderful. Never formulaic, never a dull moment.
Ariadna. Jennifer Saint.
I didn't think a feminist re-telling of one the best greek mytholgy female characters could be so compelling, so human and so stunning.
Hanh Khan Carries On. Uzma Jalaluddin.
This book solidified my belief Jalaluddin is one of the best contemporary romcom writers.
Joan is Okay. Weike Wang.
One of the best books I've read in the past decade of my life. What a writer, what a book, what a heartbreaking story. The pace can feel slow but it's necessary, it's important.
The Rachel Incident. Caroline O'Donough.
Another excellent, remarkable and incredibly joyous book. O'Donough deserves all the praise, because this debut novel really is a punch. Ireland is producing great writers and I'm so glad I stumbled upon those authors.
How to fail at flirting. Denise Williams.
This book is not an award winning book, but it's not about that. I love how she built those characters, how she made the lead find her voice, to find a path for herself, to give herself the chance to be compassionate with herself, to give herself grace and peace, and to trust the world, that is dark and terrible but you still can find good things in it. It's a beautiful book on survival and love.
The Fantasy Section.
Fire and Blood. George R.R. Martin.
I was there for the dragons and I wept for the dragons only.
The Familiar. Leigh Bardugo.
I didn't think Bardugo could write a good book and she slapped me. She shut me up. She really is a fantastic author, who is capable of writing one of the most exciting, magical, heartbreaking and wild books I've read in years. Also, this book is set in Spain! it has spells that I grew up hearing. The research for this book is amazing and it shows. And the love story is just great, they have their revenge and it is fantastic.
A venom dark and sweet. Judy I. Lin.
I knew I needed to wait to read this book because the cover looked promising. It delivered so much more, just so much more. The plot moves nicely, the magic is so delicate and simple, the characters sometimes lose a bit of punch, but overall, I loved reading this book. I just love when a fantasy book is capable to absorb my attention and I can't do anything but read the book. I can't wait to read more from Lin, honestly.
A song of Ash and Moonlight. Claire Legrand.
How is it possible that the same author who wrote that terrible and annoying ass book wrote this one? Whatever Legrand did, I don't care, I just want her to keep writing stories that are human and flawed and filled with mystic, fantasy, betrayal, plot twists and love. This book was an obsessive read, I inhaled it. It's already one of my favorite fantasy books, with Lin and Samantha Shannon's Priory.
Fantastic books I read that were not e-books.
A very large expanse of sea. Tahereh Mafi.
If I could give this author the thanks for writing a book that made my sad mind breath and rest, I could. It's a YA book but I found myself reflected in the lead character: her love for music, her distrust of the world, her disappointment and heartbreak over people who insists on hating something they don't understand. One of the best books I've ever read.
The Island of Missing Trees. Elif Shafak.
I started this book and I was very confused by it. I started I think earlier this year and I put it away. Then, in late november I picked it up and it was worth it. I cried, and I couldn't help but think in my aunt and how much she would've loved this book and this author.
Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. Gabrielle Zevin.
Very Confusing Books.
Prep. Curtis Sittenfeld.
I don't have a rating in this book in my good reads. I just don't know still how I feel about this- it's Sittenfeld's debut novel but it's very different from what I read so far from her. It was a difficult read.
Nothing serious. Emma Medrano.
This book has a story that is difficult to swallow and process. A good debut novel, a very good writer. But it's a difficult, confusing book.
How to read now. Elaine Castillo.
Some of the essays here were too long. It's not a pop culture read and it really is a very academic writing that exists in pop culture. It's very well written, has some really good discussion points, but some things needed editing, as in: just get to the point of what you're saying.
Norah Ephron: The last interview and other conversations.
I love Norah Ephron but some things made me wince and others just let me plain right confused.
Yo soy el monstruo que os habla. Paul B. Preciado.
Why did Preciado gave this speechh? It's great but also...why?
Books I haven't finished because reading is not a competition (and I'm never winning).
Ghosts. Dolly Alderton.
Gengis Khan and the making of the modern world. Jack Weatherford.
Heir. Sabaa Tahir.
Devotions. Mary Oliver.
71 poemas. Emily Dickinson.
There's always this year. On basketball and ascension. Hanif Abourragib.
Doce Césares. Mary Beard.
Wolf Hall. Hilary Mantel.
La primera cruzada. Peter Frankopan.
Historia Económica de Colombia. José A. Ocampo (editor).
Disorientation. Elaine Hsieh Chou.
Los papeles de Afganistán. Una historia secreta de la guerra. Craig Whitlock.
Opinions. Roxane Gay.
Green dot. Madeleine Gray.
Bad Taste. Nathalie Olah.

Health education with film sequences for better access to quality care and prevention.
Tumblr media
Screening and panel discussion with the WHO Academy in Lyon, IARC and the Universal Health Coverage Partnership conference on the theme of health education with film sequences for better access to quality care and prevention.
Can a film sequence influence our behaviours to better combat antimicrobial resistance during treatment? Can it promote more holistic management of mental health? Or help general practitioners and their patients to better integrate social or cultural determinants into their approach to health?
These three themes and a few more will be addressed by the short films screened on 13 December in Lyon in the auditorium of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), on the occasion of the Global Health Festival organized by the French authorities in honour of the inauguration of the WHO Academy.
This screening will inspire a debate on health education through film between high-level experts at the WHO, including representatives from IARC and the WHO Academy. The audience will be composed of WHO representatives from various French-speaking countries and a public based in Lyon composed of health professionals and students in public health, social sciences and cinema.
Speakers include:
Dr David Atchoarena, Executive Director of the WHO Academy.
Dr Jérôme Salomon, Assistant Director-General, Universal Health Coverage, Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases.
Dr Elisabete Weiderpass, Director of the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer.
A trophy will be awarded to Elisa Tiozzo, a young French director who won the Student Film Prize at our Health for All Film Festival (HAFF) in 2024. Elisa is the author of an animated film that she made when she was a student at the Emile Cohl School in Lyon. Her film deals with a scene from everyday life between a woman with cancer and her young daughter. The panel discussion will focus on, among other things, the potential impact of this film: how to support the loved ones of a patient so that they can better cope with the treatment and its consequences?
Other short films selected by the WHO Health For All Film Festival will also be shown during this session:
"4000 meters above pain", a reportage by Christophe Blot and Thibaut Ras produced by the Georges Boissel Foundation about an innovation in a mental health care process highlighting physical activity and even a sporting challenge!
"Theory versus Reality", an audiovisual testimony by Dr Nanethida Nouanesengsy of the therapeutic education association Asalée Polynésie. This testimony full of humour and gravity shows the importance for general practitioners to consider the cultural and social determinants of health during their consultations with patients.
