Tommy looked into the night sky, watching as more stars came out to greet him the longer he stared. When he was in elementary school, Tommy used to know so many names of constellations; but he can’t remember them anymore.

He smiled as he thought that Evan would remember them for them both. And in the rare event that he didn’t know the name or history of the constellation, he’d look it up.

It tended to get stale with the same ol’ crew. A lot of the volunteers were older guys. Twenty years older than Tommy. And they were fine to work with. Better than fine. Tommy had a lot of respect for them, and had learned a lot from them.

But Tommy wasn’t even 30 yet. Well, not for another couple years anyway. So, it was just nice.. having some younger guys hanging around the station during the summers.

Buck bangs on the side of the metal walls of his makeshift prison.

“HELP!” He screams. “HELP! HELP ME!”

He feels sort of pathetic, if he’s being honest. He’s supposed to be able to help himself. And honestly? Usually he can. He spent years on the road, bouncing from place to place, with only himself to rely on. But here he is, for the second time this year, trapped and helpless. Except last time, his team was there. This time…

He’s on his own. 

“HELP! I’M HERE!”

This is probably useless. 

He should probably give up. 

Except, then he starts spiraling about giving up, a little. Because, what if he dies? What if he actually just dies out here? From his perspective, he’s just dead. But what about Shannon and Chris? They’d be, like, kind of traumatized, right? If he died immediately after helping them. And Eddie! Eddie would feel bad. Eddie made him leave the house. Then there’s Maddie. She’d be pretty bummed to lose her only sibling. She was pretty pissed when he had the damn embolism. So that’s, like, at least four reasons not to stop trying. 

Buck has to survive. God, what a chore.

He keeps banging on the side of the metal.

“HELP! I’M TRAPPED!”

And then something strange happens. Something that makes him sort of feel hopeful, but in a cautious way. Like, the hope could also be dread very quickly. 

The water levels start to decrease. 

It’s not sudden. Not a huge, swirling drain.

Chim nods and points at the ground below. “He was my old captain.”

“The racist piece of shit?” Hen asks.

“The very same,” Chim confirms. 

“They came here to take our kids,” Hen says. 

“What?” Bobby demands. 

“They wanted child soldiers,” Athena adds. “To train up for some new world order.”

“Oh my god,” Karen exhales heavily. 

“What’s worse?” Athena adds. “I think there’s probably more of them where these two came from.”

There are three possibilities. 

First - the best option - Sal and Gerrard, as Chim says he was called, are anomalies. Two batshit individuals who thought they were starting something. Delusions of grandeur. Meaning, the threat is over. Possible? Yes. Likely? No. 

Second - slightly better - they’re not alone, but their ranks are small. Maybe this was a real body blow to them. Whoever they are. Maybe the loss of two of their men will be enough to deter them from trying anything. At least for a while. Maybe the library will be seen as strong. Not to be trifled with. 

Third - and this is the worst option - all this will do is piss off a heavily armed group of ambitious men. Not a great position to be in. Especially considering the two automatic weapons their dead members carried with them. 

They can’t ignore the possibility that the latter option is the truth. They have no way of knowing for sure, so they have to operate under the worst case scenario. That’s how you’re prepared enough to survive. As brutal as it is.

Athena and Hen clean themselves of Sal’s blood while the others get to work preparing for option three. They hide the evidence of children that’s visible from the outside of the building. They go through their intruders’ things. Guns. Ammos. Knives. Bindings. Gags. Anything they can keep and repurpose, they do. The rest, they leave in the Hummer.

Eddie’s not entirely sure what to do. He’s not up for a lot, to be honest. Moving and work in what has felt like an endless rotation these past two weeks has left him sore and tired. But he wants to make a good day of it. Just the two of them. 

“Is there anything you want to do today?” Eddie asks Chris. “We could say goodbye to the house? It’s our last day with it.”

“Say goodbye to the house?” Chris asks. “What would we even do? Wave?”

i didnt know what you meant for a split second LOL but word ok I GOTCHA. i did write everybody with cognitive "touchstones" in mind but used it more as one of multiple building blocks in shaping everybody's personalities & tried not to have anybody be a stereotype of their neural makeup. SPOILERS ABOUND BELOW THE CUT HEADS UP!

jake i wrote pretty explicitly as autistic. im not autistic myself but i have multiple close family members who are; ive been around it since i was little to present day & wanted to try my hand at writing an autistic character. i think i had it that his father is also autistic so his parents caught on pretty quickly & got him all the tools he needed growing up to live happily. unfortunately hes also extremely gullible & a firm believer in geek social fallacy

sal is a case of C-PTSD (compounded with the multiple head injuries sustained at the end of sad sack by the time sortie rolls around if thats illuminating at all) which is something he combats by making himself as physically large & intimidating as possible while using that as a social shield if that makes sense. he has this concept of himself as something he needs to mask (often literally) in order to behave as his "true" self, which also is a concept of himself that is "Not Me" that he shucks off anything he may have ever done wrong onto so he never has to take responsibility for anything. i deliberately did not write DID here but he is highly dissociative with poor emotional regulation & deeply low EQ (again: see sortie)

mal is a very nebulous anxiety disorder in an extremely extraverted person. his treatment of it involves trying to "shout" over his anxiety even louder to try & drown it out which goes about as well as youd expect; he actually nearly breaches into a full-on panic attack in book 3 where hes trying to light his cigarette. self medication is also 2 packs a day & his BP is like 220/120 at rest, but he doesnt go to the doctor much or declines blood pressure on the regular cus if he doesnt see it then nothing's wrong. nothing's wrong! he's also got some shit going on with not being able to perceive himself in any positive light unless he's positioning himself to be praised as a hero or directly comparing himself with somebody he considers "lower" than him, which when you put that up against the context of book 3 is like get the fuck away from me dude. more on that later, i got comic-related plans for mal lol

stone is a deep depression mixed in with barely functional alcoholism (starting to not so subtly breach over into alcoholic psychosis) which all roots back into an unmanaged grief thats turned into him looking for you-know-who in the people around him (ie romantic partners, this dudes a mess) he kinda laid his shit bare in 4 so the less said about that the better, his whole situation honestly skeeves me out bigtime

garv ive gone into his nonsense on here plenty but he is an unintelligent sociopath (no childhood woes he just got born that way) with the added issue of being raised on /b/ LOL

Bad Situations ❄️ - trapped outside in a blizzard / snowstorm

It feels like being plunged into a bucket of ice, the second they pass through the ley-line, and his first thought is FUCK as ice finds its way against his neck and down the line of his back, and cold starts dampening his socks at the ankles. The second is immediate regret. Fuck--- fuck, why'd he ask Sal to come with him?

Not that she can't handle it, probably. Honestly she might be fine in the cold? Given some of her abilities as a death knight, it'd make sense. A body can get used to being in frigid temperatures too, if properly trained, and she spent a fair time in Icecrown and other frozen wastes. So really, this might be nothing to her.

Of course, that point might also be moot, given her status at the time was kind of....dead to the left.

Shaking his head, he focuses on their situation. He'd found something supernatural might be going on, since he'd heard about weird anomalies like wailing and something humanoid with long white hair that seemed to drift above the ground, approaching hikers at higher elevations in the mountains. He had invited Salena as a precaution since the data was vague, with the intent they'd either find nothing, or deal with whatever it was before things escalated too much. There had been mentions of some cold spots, but that was par for the course for some entities. And the mountain wasn't high enough to even see snow. He packed a thicker jacket in his bag, just in case, but there wasn't any evidence there'd be anything like this.

And they'd used the gas station ley-line for pain-free travel. Because they weren't trying to cross to Cadence exactly, they weren't guaranteed to land at the door of another ley-line when they were spit out. Which means they had to be near one, but that could be anywhere in at least a mile or two radius from here. And right now, the whole area was blanketed in deep snow, that definitely shouldn't be here.

So... priority one couldn't be an immediate exit. It had to be shelter. But that meant they were stuck here, not fully prepared for weather like this, given he hadn't found any info on any storms in the area. His skin tingled, both from cold ice brushing against his exposed arm, and where snow pelted the basin of his hoodie, but also with something electric. There was no doubt this wasn't a naturally occurring storm. Whatever was around here could be causing it.

Not that they could do anything about that, now.

"Salena!" He yells, so his voice carries over howling wind. He can see flakes already caked to his lashes, and frosting the tips of his hair. "Can you make a portal back?!"

Also, I had this cute little realization when thinking about my dudes earlier...

So, there's four of them here, right? Naturally, you think about associating them with things that come in fours sometimes - like the seasons, for example! Sticking to just the seasons with these guys, though, you'd end up having two springs (Lorien and Sal) one summer (Mina) and one winter (Branson,) but... I kept think-thonking a little more on it... and realized how I could encapsulate all four seasons with them.~

I realized they were totally blends of them - and the blends suit them strangely well! The vibes, the colors, personality - everything. It all suddenly checked out when I thought of them as:

Sal felt Tommy taking shape under his touch as they shifted around on the couch, trying to keep all their combined body heat beneath the blankets as they made space between their bodies for Sal’s hand.

Tommy grunted as he twisted his body beneath Sal’s to reach for the shoebox that they kept under the couch.

“Don’t jizz on the blankets,” Tommy murmured.

“This what passes for dirty talk?” Sal asked idly, taking the lube from the shoe box and tossing the box onto the coffee table.

“We need these blankets tonight. Just. Try not to get too much on there, okay?”

This is so evil because only one??? Also because I just struggle to believe they would actually like me or be the way I imagine them to be if they were actually real so no matter who I choose, they would all end up hurting me, accidentally or not.... My first choice would be Barbatos because I believe he'd be the best at taking care of me, you know? ...me tryna remember where I traveled in my life. I think the only times I went out of my home land (germany), I went to London, Poland and really short visits to Denmark and Austria. Nothing days I have to choose something outside of my homeland though so I'd say my favorite place would be Fehmarn. It's an island in the Baltic Sea and part of Germany too. We used to go there often when I was a child
