Monster (2023) // dir. Koreeda Hirokazu

Tanaka Yūko delivering the most important lines in one of the best cinematic moments I have recently seen. You need to watch it to understand the full context and impact, as I don’t really want to give away too much. The film is finely structured so you get to piece together the story fully through the whole duration while the emotions the viewer feels deepen. This is Monster (Japanese: 怪物) directed by Koreeda Hirokazu from a screenplay written by Sakamoto Yuuji.

Imagine Yuuji but with glasses like his dad Jin. Also as someone who struggled with learning in class and was very clumsy only to find out that I had needed glasses for two years and the eye doctor didn't say anything until I was referred by the school directly. Turns out it's easier to learn and move around when you can actually see. I didn't know the moon had shadows or craters! Imagine Nanami or Wasuke taking Yuuji to the optometrist after seeing him struggle. Also more shonen main characters with glasses please.

I've seen a few fanarts of older Yuuji with glasses and I always have to make a double take to see if it's really him or Jin. He seems to have quite good eyesight, but it would've been fun if he got glasses like Maki to see the curses around him. Or came across a similar cursed object before coming into contact with Jujutsu Tech. I'm sure him and Sasaki would've had a lot of fun with it.

There is a curious lack of shonen mc with glasses. Off the top of my head I can only remember Sakamoto Taro. I guess lots of managaka just don't want to deal with the hassle of coming up with reasons for why the glasses don't get constantly lost/destroyed during combat and contact lenses kinda feel like too easy of a way out. It would be interesting though to have a visually impaired mc.

As previously mentioned, each time you see Sukuna says "boy" for Yuuji, it's actually "brat" 'cause he's always a rude mf to our baby.

》 Meguna/Sukumi: "Kenjaku, you bastard.. always doing the nastiest/sickest shit!"

What I've offered is just my personal interpretation, 'cause yeah... Sukuna. The actual translation is literally just "That damn/mf Kenjaku always doing the nastiest/sickest things." You could also say, "That damn/mf Kenjaku is nasty/sick/twisted."

》 Meguna/Sukumi: "Well, if you ask me [for my opinion]..."

The actual translation for the right panel is "if you ask me..." so this one's a slightly better way of wording it to follow up with Sukuna's next statement: "Why are you all so weak?" I'd also like to add that by "you all", Sukuna just means the humans, in general.

》 Meguna/Sukumi: "[You're all] creatures that crumble to the dust at the slightest touch. How can you say things like you wish to be happy forever and such..?"

Official translations worded the whole thing differently but the message is somewhat there, I guess..? My translation might be off too but I think it's understandable.

Just a note that the kanji used for "misery" in this chapter was 不幸 (fukō), which also means unhappiness, suffering or misfortune, but the furigana in this dialogue reads おれ (ore) which means I, or me. Officials opted to go with "THIS" and in bold, which isn't wrong 'cause that's essentially referring to Yuuji as the misery.

Additionally, I don't know if "stifle" is the appropriate word but the raws was 「 噛み潰す」. The kanji 噛 comes from the verb 噛む (kamu) which means bite or chew, whereas 潰 means crush, ruin or break. I think the suitable word here could be literally "chew up", or perhaps "swallow" (like in swallow your pride) - instead of stifle.

I know how Yuuji was gonna move towards Meguna/Sukumi right after this, but the latter never literally said "come closer" ahaha. It was more of "come at me" or "try me" that sort of thing.

Hi, it is me! It has been a while since I posted something here, and I know why. Every time I see my deceased cat's picture, my heart feels like it's being pinched. I still love her and would sometimes imagine she comes out of the bushes that she always played in. 

Even this morning, I recalled her when feeding her siblings.

The past is the past. And although it could never be repeated, we can remember it. Ironically, the past is the theme I bring up in my current novel, Tiny Memory.

It's initially a re-write project from two novels I wrote somewhere between 2013 and 2015 with a slightly different plot. The first novel entitled Kiss My Heart, a story revolved around Sakamoto Naoki, who had a crush on his childhood friend Furuta Yuuji, who dated his senior colleague Ueda Kenji. The second novel was Time Capsule, which told a story about Ueda Kenji, who can't stop feeling guilty about the death of his friend Hara Kaoru and for causing Takada Kenta, who is Kaoru's brother, to suffer from amnesia.

Even though Tiny Memory is a combination of these two novels, I ended up excluding Kenta from it because I think his character is much like Sakamoto's. 

The reason I came out with this idea is simply because I love a spin-off. You know, it's when the side characters got a story about them and became the major of a series. If you had read Tiny Memory, you'll notice that it included Hasegawa as Sakamoto's friend from middle school and Daichi as his colleague in Mokachino. And indeed, they were born as spin-off characters from the previous novels.

So now, I want to focus on Tiny Memory for a little longer before I move to a story about Hasegawa and Daichi.
