What was the most surprising thing they learned about one another once they started dating?

this is tough cause of how much i love to subvert expectations with these two. i had to ask the saiouma discord i'm in for an outside opinion, i'll be sharing their answers

for Kokichi, it was how Shuichi acts around his family, primarily around his cousin Petra: the two of them pick on one another alot, the worse being Petra waking Shuichi up in the worst ways imaginable and him trying to kill her over it. he's alot more relaxed and confident while at home and as results he's more likely to pull stunts well outside the "shy innocent goody two-shoes" behavior he's known for

for Shuichi, i got two answers i both like, one silly one serious: -silly was he was surprised by how Kokichi types. and for those who don't know how i hc he types: perfect grammar and prefers emoticons over emojis. -serious one was him having the realization that he forgot Kokichi is human. i tend to focus alot on how the other characters treat Kokichi like some sorts of cartoon villain so often that they forget he's a real person, and sometimes Shuichi also falls in this trap. so like- Shuichi seeing the humanity of Kokichi while dating him (from scars on his body to plushies on his bed) makes him register he was much deeper into that "not a real person" thing than he thought he was

saiouma phantom thief + soulmate au where you can temporarily see the prints of wherever your soulmate touches once you turn the age of 18.

when saihara’s 18th birthday comes up, all his friends are excited for him. the chances may be slim, but there’s still the possibility that his soulmate even goes to their school! wouldn’t that be something?

unfortunately, no such thing seems to be the case as a few days pass by and saihara has yet to see any prints of his soulmate’s. undeterred by this, though, his more hopeful friends assure him that he’ll find his soulmate eventually.

about a week after his birthday, a museum is reportedly robbed by none other than the infamous phantom thief. saihara’s uncle ends up being called to the crime scene to investigate, and brings his nephew along as well.

you can imagine saihara’s confusion when he sees that the crime scene is littered with dimly glowing footsteps, already starting to fade. the signature sign of a soulmate’s touch.

he tries to chalk it up to maybe it being one of the other examiners or forensics on the scene? but that wouldn’t make any sense, because they’re all way too old for him . . . and the footsteps are pretty small for any of the ones closer to his age. not to mention they’re already starting to fade, meaning they’ve been here a while . . . but it’s 9 in the morning, so that would mean the footsteps would have to have been made at least a couple of hours ago. who would’ve been here near the dead of night?

he ends up filing it to the back of his mind, because his uncle is starting to notice his distraction, and for some reason he can’t really explain, he feels as though this discovery might be something that’s best to keep to himself for now.

a day passes by, and true to the phantom thief’s M.O., a letter is sent to the police station. their pattern has always followed the same M.O.:

first, a robbery is committed; the tricky part is trying to figure out the location, because it never seems to stick to one type of place—sometimes it’s a regular old jewelry store and the next time it’s a high-end established business company that delves in tech, etc.

next, the following day after the robbery, a letter is sent by with an encrypted message (they’ve only ever managed to solve 1 out of the 7 coded letters sent, the 1 being solved by detective prodigy kirigiri kyoko).

then, the letter is always accompanied by some random object; this part at least sticks to a slightly more understandable pattern, because it’s almost always some object that one would associate with a kid—ex. one time they received a rubber duck, the next time it was a lone crayon, and the time after that was a plushie in the form of a horse.

and lastly, the most crucial part of it all that differentiates the phantom thief from so many previous masterminds of criminology: the object that was stolen is always sent back, and if it isn’t sent to the police station, it’s returned directly back into where it came from, as though it was never taken in the first place— doesn’t matter how guarded the crime scene may be, because somehow, no one ever sees anything (but why? and how?)

a few days pass by again, and saihara—really, he didn’t mean to, it just kinda happened—manages to actually decipher the encryption on accident. the letter reveals the location of the next place to be robbed.

he reports to his uncle that he’s accidentally solved the letter, only leaving out one important detail: the letter was covered in glowing fingerprints that only saihara could see. the theory of the phantom thief being his soulmate is so impossible, and yet, the only explanation for those prints to be on the letter would require that to be true:

the letter and objects are always sealed in an envelope, inside a package. the prints were on both the inside and outside of the box, and all over the letter and objects, which no one else could have touched directly.

all evidence is sealed into plastic bags and are never touched without the usage of gloves to avoid tainting of a crime scene or clues.

even the mail service wouldn’t have been able to touch the inside of a sealed shut package and an unopened envelope.

so naturally, just to prove that he’s just being unreasonable and that his theory is definitely not possible, saihara decides to test it.

protection units are assigned to the next targeted location, and saihara goes with his uncle to check up on the scene and once and for all debunk his theory.

it’s a gallery most known for its exhibition dedicated to a famous photographer prodigy, but saihara has never really been one for that type of art, so he can’t recall the name of them.

when his uncle isn’t looking, saihara quickly takes the opportunity to put his plan into motion. he doesn’t know where exactly the thief will strike, nor what will they take, so he opts for the entrance to one of the larger exhibitions that’s more open and bare. impossible to miss or not pass through.

then, as best as he can without really being able to tell, saihara traces his finger along the wall to write out a single question:

can you see this?

it’s a long shot, because saihara doesn’t know if his soulmate’s even 18 yet, or if the letter was even telling the truth at all and this location was just a red herring. but it’s all he’s got. and if the phantom thief truly is his soulmate, and all the circumstances are right, then they should see it, right?

saihara hopes he’s wrong.

he is not wrong, he finds out the next day, when he returns to the newly created crime scene and finds—much to his absolute internal shock—a response written in the form of glowing prints:

duh, of course i can! i have eyes, y’know?

and just when saihara thinks things can’t possibly get any more complicated, another letter is sent to the station—same M.O. and all. except this time, there’s one thing very different about this one.

on the back of the letter, in fading, glowing writing, another address is written. with it, a note.

what a coincidence that we’re tied together! life’s funny like that, so i’ll give you a freebie just this once, my detective. but if you’re gonna be my soulmate, you’ve gotta be able to keep up with me, okay? so after this, no more freebies. you wanna catch me, right? then you’ve got to work for that!

i look forward to our future chases.

saihara nearly faints as the sudden revelation that only he can see, his uncle—who’s standing right next to him—none the wiser to this development.

//kokichi; domestic saiouma

On laundry day Kichi sits in front of the washing machine/dryer all day, waiting for his favorite plushie

Kokichi would call out to Saihara, demanding for him to bring him essentials & cuddles, since he "was the one who threw it in there" so now he's "gotta make for a good replacement!"

While they're eating, Kichi leans back in his chair all 2 minutes to peek at the display of the washer/dryer to see how much longer its gonna take

After the clothes are done, Kokichi would curl up in a soft nest for hours with his still warm plushie and clothes, and after Saihara finishes folding the clothes, he usually joins Kichi in his cuddle dome.

This would be one of the only moments where Kichi would actually let Shu do things like (very carefully of course) laying on him or snatching the little cuddle tortilla up & snuggling him

The only reason why Kokichi's hydraulic press ptsd doesn't kick in, is because he's in such a comfort coma that he barely notices anything except for Shuichi's gentle appreciation

Who said “I love you” first: Ouma has said… quite a few times in the game. From plain “I love you” to playing with a card of the best pickup master, because his “I’m a criminal, I’m gonna steal your heart” was really lame. Saihara was treating it as jokes/lies until during the New Year’s Eve he didn’t see spectacular fireworks, arranged in words “MARRY ME SAIHARA-CHAN”

Who would have the other’s picture as their phone background: Ouma would have a photo he took when Saihara was asleep. We know he likes his sleeping face. Saihara has never uncovered when he was able to do it

Who leaves notes written in fog on the bathroom mirror: Ouma. He especially likes doing it when he and Saihara don’t live together. Poor detective wakes up in the morning and sees bathroom notes although his door is locked…  

Who buys the other cheesy gifts: Saihara accepts the plushie orca, you won’t tell me that he doesn’t like adorable stuff. I think teddy bears and chocolate would be normal presents from Ouma. Then Ouma eats Saihara’s chocolate 

Who initiated the first kiss: Ouma. My pure child, Saihara, is too shy for this romantic and embarrassing stuff. he would probably die from heart attack eventually

Who kisses the other awake in the morning: I’m gonna let Saihara do something cute. In the end, Ouma seems to be a person who runs at night and then sleeps until afternoon, so he really needs a good alarm clock

Who starts tickle fights: Ouma’s playful nature doesn’t let me choose anyone else. It’s a fun game

Who asks who if they can join the other in the shower: Consider Saihara taking a shower and Ouma entering the bathroom, using the window and not asking questions 

Who surprises the other in the middle of the day at work with lunch: Since Ouma’s work is pretty… questionable and I’m not even sure if it’s possible to surprise him in his “secret base”, I’m gonna say that Saihara is the one who is sometimes unexpectedly visited  

Who was nervous and shy on the first date: Saihara, obviously! He’s cute when nervous 

Who kills/takes out the spiders: I hesitate between “Saihara screams and Ouma tortures the spider” and “after hard experiences in Gonta’s lab, Saihara screams and turns around just to catch a glimpse of Ouma running away as fast as he can - and Ouma runs fast, as it was confirmed in canon” 

Who loudly proclaims their love when they’re drunk: Saihara never drinks so Ouma. Though I believe Ouma is that kind of person who acts the same no matter if he’s drunk or sober 

b) Kuzupeko

Who said “I love you” first: Kuzuryuu. I just can’t see Peko saying it first, for too long she was living while believing that she’s nothing but a toy. Kuzuryuu was trying to convince her that she means much more than this, and the love confession seems to be a nice way to prove it

Who would have the other’s picture as their phone background: Both. But Pekoyama would show it proudly while Kuzuryuu would act like a little tsundere he is

Who leaves notes written in fog on the bathroom mirror: Kuzuryuu. Peko may act tough but Kuzuryuu knows that secretly she adores all this sentimental love bullshit so he makes everything to make her happy. He would love her so much, it makes me emotional… 

Who buys the other cheesy gifts: It’s obvious, isn’t it? ;) Peko loves cute things, just imagine Kuzuryuu coming to her with a teddy bear bigger than he is 

Who initiated the first kiss: Kuzuryuu? If he could confess, he could also be a man and kiss the girl

Who kisses the other awake in the morning: Pekoyama, but I see her giving Kuzuryuu one gentle kiss on the forehead before leaving to train. Does it count as waking up?

Who starts tickle fights: Pekoyama, because she never smiles and I just love how she keeps doing things that first appear to be not in her style

Who asks who if they can join the other in the shower: Kuzuryuu, and he pretends to be serious and cool but in fact he is super ashamed

Who surprises the other in the middle of the day at work with lunch: They work together so it would be difficult, but I think Pekoyama is more likely to do it. She would stay in kitchen for half a day, attempting to cook something sweet

Who was nervous and shy on the first date: Both, both are nervous and shy. They’re sweet

Who kills/takes out the spiders: Kuzuryuu wants to kill the spider but Peko gets sad - it’s an animal too - so the spider is peacefully returned to the garden 

Who loudly proclaims their love when they’re drunk: Kuzuryuu, of course. In the most cheesy words
