Patronage: mental disorders, neurological disorders, runaways, victims of incest

Dymphna, the only daughter to a pagan king, took after her mother in faith and beauty, taking a vow of chastity at a young age. After the death of his wife, Dymphna’s father sought to marry his daughter, causing her to flee. After finding her and her continued refusals, Dymphna’s father cut off her head making her a martyr at the age of fifteen.

Today we celebrate the Holy Great Virgin Martyr Dymphna of Geel. Saint Dymphna was from Ireland whose mother was a Christian but died young and whose father was a pagan. In an attempt to find a second wife as beautiful and charming as his first, he could not find any but his own daughter, Dymphna. Falling into lustful desire for her, Dymphna fled the country, away from her father, and went to Belgium with the priest Gerebran. Saint Dymphna's father eventually found them, slaughtering both the holy priest and his own daughter who was only 15 years of age. Saint Dymphna is considered the patron saint of mental health and the abused and often performs miracles for those who pray to her with faith. All this week I have been wearing my Saint Dymphna pendant in honour of Mental Health Awareness Week! Saint Dymphna is the patron saint of mental health and I wear this pendant as a reminder it will be ok.

My mom was always a believer in the intercession of Saints. When she was diagnosed with a terminal illness and given six months to live when I was 15, she invoked Saint Peregrine to help her live long enough so she could make sure I would be okay without her. I was given two more years with my mother than I was supposed to have. When I was old enough to travel alone, she insisted I have a Saint Christopher medallion. I keep one in my car and I have survived two accidents I shouldn’t have and narrowly missed being in a catastrophic accident... So I’m taking a page out of my mom’s book to try to help me get past the fear and anxiety that I’m experiencing. This is a medallion of Saint Dymphna. Saint Dymphna is the patron saint of those suffering from anxiety, nervousness, mental health and neurological issues. Between my crippling fear of public speaking, my Bipolar Disorder, my Narcolepsy and my ADHD, this is the patron saint I need to invoke above all others. I was listening to a talk this last week and the speaker said that if you have a mantra or prayer that you have memorized it keeps the mind from wandering into topics that may cause you to suffer. I thought this was an interesting point. If I’m out for a walk for example and start to brood, I’m causing myself to suffer. I don’t always consider to say my prayers or recite my favorite Psalm in those moments. I think this is where a pocket Rosary or a Rosary bracelet could be of great help. It’s small enough to keep with you and could provide that tactile reminder that you don’t have to listen to the thoughts that are only dragging you down.
