“Now, Bishop Gervais so cherished Hugh, whom he had held on the baptismal font, that he sought for him the hand of the noblest lady Bertha, formerly wife of Alan, Count of Brittany.” This Alain had died in the year 1040. He had had a son from Bertha, the brave Conan, who was poisoned under the walls of Château-Gontier. Bertha was the daughter of Odo II, Count of Blois. "This greatly displeased Count Geoffrey," adds the annalist, "as the event proved. Hugh went with his men-at-arms to Bertha; Geoffrey ran to the Château-du-Loir and set it on fire. "In a charter that we have already mentioned (1), we find some details about the siege of the Château-du-Loir. Geoffrey did not seize it, but he ravaged the streets of the square, the village that surrounded it, and even a church founded in honor of Saint Guingalois, where Gervais had recently established canons. The soldiers of the Count of Anjou dispersed them. These actions,” we read in our manuscript, "now rendered the count to the bishop and the bishop to the count odious to each other. Geoffrey, therefore, seeing that, by the advice of Gervais, who wanted to harm and lose him, Count Hugh had taken a very powerful woman, and carrying Judas in his heart, called the bishop near him, in order to treacherously surprise him. Having seized him, he had him thrown into prison and held him in irons for seven years, hoping to thus make himself master of the Château-du-Loir. But it was of no use to him, because the castle was well defended by the garrison. While these things were going on, Count Hugh died, the bishop Gervais being still a prisoner. This death greatly afflicted the bishop and greatly delighted the Count of Anjou.” Count Geoffrey ruled the province for ten years. Indeed, the inhabitants of Le Mans having driven out the grieving widow of Hugh with her children through one of the gates of the city, had Count Geoffrey enter their walls full of joy.

What did Lannes enjoy doing when he was in Lectoure? I think he had vineyards?
He had lots and lots of vineyards, almost all of them rented out to family and personal friends, and other agricultural lands also rented out. So there were all sorts of opportunities to play in the dirt if he was so inclined--and he often was.
Jean-Boy would visit old friends and invite them to his house, the former bishops' palace attached to the Cathedral of Saint-Gervais that he bought after the First Italian Campaign--not all that elegant, though: the floor tiles were worn, the wooden floors squeaked, and the plaster had damp patches in a few of the rooms. Still, he loved it here much better than any of his more upscale Paris properties. He'd also spend time at the former abbey at Bouillas, but usually reserved for gatherings too rowdy for the town to see and hear.
So, nothing exciting for many folks, but exactly what Jean-Boy wanted to do. If you recall, I posted a few pages on this from my draft novel about a year ago, perhaps.

jeudi 24 octobre 2024 3:12 a.m. Break. 18:30:19

See on Scoop.it - Transports par cable - tram aérien

How to walk the Tour des Combins, the best long-distance hike in the Alps
For a different side of a classic, the Alps have no shortage of lesser-known walking trails and alternative hiking experiences, leading to towering peaks and gentle meadows. Along the way, pick up new skills, meet welcoming locals and form friendships to last a lifetime.
“We’ll never be as popular as the Tour du Mont Blanc, and we’d never expect to be,” says mountain instructor Melanie Müri, as steaming bowls of apple and celeriac soup are passed down the long, wooden table. “But there’s so much untapped potential in this landscape.” We’re in the dining room of Cabane de Chanrion, a mountain hut set at an altitude of 8,077 feet below snow-speckled summits and razor-edge arêtes, narrow rock ridges that separate valleys with fang-like pinnacles. The hut’s stripped-back, pale-wood interior makes showpieces of the oversized windows, beyond which butterflies dance among the blue gentian flowers and marmots whistle. It’s a scene of playfulness and stark stillness, all in one.
Melanie has cut to the heart of an uneasy conundrum. I’m on day three of a six-day loop from the small Swiss village of Bourg-St-Pierre following the Tour des Combins, a 63-mile trail circumnavigating the little-known Grand Combin massif — a glaciated mountain range in southwest Switzerland’s Valais canton, straddling the border with Italy. Like Melanie, many locals in this corner of the Alps are torn: they covet recognition yet fear its consequences. They want to share this region’s treasures but also cherish its quietness. It’s a contradiction as sharp as the towering peaks outside.
Some critics argue such balance has eluded Mont Blanc — which, at 4,800 metres, is western Europe’s highest peak — none more so than Jean-Marc Peillex, mayor of Saint-Gervais, a village nestled at its foot. He made local headlines last summer after threatening to sue two hurluberlus (fools) who slept at the summit, flouting a law that prohibits camping throughout the 7,800-acre Mont Blanc natural protection zone. It was set up in 2020 with the aim of safeguarding the local environment by regulating activities in the face of a visitor swell.

Ahh this is such a great analysis!!!!! I never knew that Gervais's name meant "spear-holder" but that's very symbolic. Also I love your point here:
Ironically, has subconsciously warped Myriel’s previous words to him despite propping him up as a paragon of goodness, or his own personal ideal. Where Myriel had told him that holding onto anger after his experiences was a state to be pitied (not condemned), Valjean now views his previous self with all his (justifiably) negative emotions as monstrous.
Like..yeah, earlier on Myriel said:
If you emerge from that sad place with thoughts of hatred and of wrath against mankind, you are deserving of pity; if you emerge with thoughts of good-will and of peace, you are more worthy than any one of us.”
But Jean Valjean didn't internalize that: instead he internalizes the idea that he must either be a wretched irredeemable monster, or a saint, with no in between, something Myriel never wanted him to believe. It's a tragedy, and that misunderstanding of what Myriel wanted to show him is going to haunt him the rest of his life :_;.
Les Misérables Vol 1, Book 2, Chapter 13: Petit-Gervais
Man I loved this chapter and how it depicted Valjean’s internal turmoil and morality struggle. Particularly, how his guilt and self-directed anger warp his self-perception.
Broke down my thoughts & analysis (under the cut) into four rough sections:
Valjean, post-Myriel
The incident with the 40 sous
Valjean’s (warped) conclusion re: his own morality
The demonisation of the name Jean Valjean
As always, keen to see other interpretations/things I’ve missed 👀👀
Valjean, post-Myriel
We start with Valjean’s initial reaction to Myriel’s clemency:
“He had the indistinct feeling that this priest’s forgiveness was the greatest assault and most tremendous attack he had ever experienced. That if he resisted this clemency the hardening of his heart would be definitive. That if he yielded he would be obliged to renounce that hatred with which the deeds of other men had filled his soul over so many years, a hatred he relished.”
I really enjoyed the violence of this description, and how it illustrates the burden of choice. Before, when all Valjean could do was doubt and steal, he was just an ex-convict, almost devoid of agency because of how drastically prison had altered his worldview. Now, if he continues to doubt and steal after not only being shown great kindness but also being given the means to rise above his station, he would be a worse man than he was before.
But naturally, the effects of nineteen years of prison and a lifetime of poverty before that can’t really be brushed away with one gift of kindness, no matter how awe-inspiring that gift might have been. Not to mention, when someone is truly a better person than you are, being on the receiving end of their kindness can be pretty unpleasant! Oftentimes it throws your imperfections in harsh relief; forgiveness especially evokes guilt and asks for change when you’re still in the throes of anger. Thus: “As too bright a light would have hurt his eyes on emerging from the dark, so the bishop hurt his soul when he came out of that perverse place of darkness called penal servitude.”
(Side note: the bishop is light for obvious moral reasons, but on top of that, the object that triggered Valjean’s illumination were the candlesticks the bishop gave him. So really, Myriel brought both metaphorical and literal light to Jean Valjean. Very cool!)
The incident with the 40 sous
The struggle of moral reform is shown when Valjean does indeed hold onto his old ways for a little longer when robbing Petit-Gervais. This time, however, he’s internalised enough of Myriel’s message that it becomes a real, concrete turning point in his outward actions.
(Another side note: a rudimentary google search told me that Gervais can mean spear, i.e. even the boy’s name points to the incident with the forty sous that finally pierces through Valjean’s hatred, anger, and confusion.)
Valjean’s (warped) conclusion re: his own morality
We can refer to let the scene where Valjean has an out-of-body vision featuring the bishop Myriel and the dangerous ex-convict Jean Valjean for the conclusion Valjean settles on.
During this scene, Hugo depicts Valjean’s consciousness as separate to the two forces he envisions, thus showing us how Valjean is completely lost. He cannot identify with either extreme within him, but he doesn’t know where he falls between them either. To him, his own morality has become an all-or-nothing situation. He compares his vision of his prior self next to the bishop as “Satan by the light of Paradise”, and subsequently sees the bishop’s light vanquish ‘Jean Valjean’.
It’s a significantly more ✨catholic guilt✨ approach than what Myriel was going for. We see it even in the chapter title, Petit-Gervais. Even though the interaction with Petit-Gervais is brief and the focus of the chapter shifts to Valjean’s repentance after the act, the title still lingers on the boy’s name. It could indicate that to Valjean, his mistreatment of Petit-Gervais (and subsequent guilt) overshadows his change of heart afterwards.
The demonisation of the name Jean Valjean
This self-hatred and warped self-perception is also exemplified in the use of Jean Valjean’s name as a borderline seperate entity to the man himself. I started paying more attention to mentions of his name after reading this post, and there are a couple places in this chapter where we see it becoming the manifestation of his crimes and sins:
“… he felt that he was no more than a ghost. And that standing there before him… was the ghastly convicted felon Jean Valjean.”
“He actually saw this Jean Valjean, this sinister face, before him. He was almost starting to wonder who the man was, and was horrified by him”
“… the bishop grew in stature and brilliance while Jean Valjean shrank and faded. There came a point when he was no more than a shadow. All of a sudden he vanished.”
The man is having an identity crisis! He’s externalising (and almost dissociating from) his crimes and sins, and is now doing what other people will do for the rest of the book — associating his name with every bad action he’s performed, and all the negative connotations associated with the myth of the ex-convict Jean Valjean.
#but YESS thank you for posting your thoughts!!!#high quality analysis!!!#people should read it is Quality#lm 1.2.13#les mis letters#jean valjean

See on Scoop.it - JamesO

Brickclub 4.6.2 “In Which Little Gavroche Takes Advantage of Napoleon The Great” Part 1
This chapter is full of the mythological motifs we learned from the beginning of the book.
The chapter title contrasts Gavroche’s littleness with Napoleon’s greatness--and we know by now that being a great man isn’t a good thing. It also recalls the first line of dialogue in this novel, Bienvenu’s exchange with Napoleon, where he says “You behold a good man and I a great man. Each of us may profit by it.” Of course, Napoleon is losing both these comparisons.
And then:
Petit-Gavroche, shivering gaily as always in his rags, was standing in apparent rapture in front of a wigmaker’s shop over l’Orme-Saint-Gervais way.
I’m not sure the wigs can actually be said to invoke Valjean, given that whatever his secret collection of wigs may be, we’ve never actually seen him wear one. But that “Gervais” sticks out, connecting Petit-Gavroche to Petit-Gervais, who here is being connected to sainthood.
There’s no particular Valjean figure robbing these children, there’s just absolutely every adult in Paris being vaguely annoyed at their existence and failing to give a shit.
Also I just looked up Saint Gervase (wikipedia: Gervasius and Protasius) and
They are the patron saints of Milan and of haymakers and are invoked for the discovery of thieves.
Well. THAT sure wasn’t an accident, but it sounds oddly at odds with this book’s ideas about theft. My best guess is that it's about Petit-Gervais’s role in Valjean’s realization of his own thieving.
Right now Gavroche is doing the thieving--or trying to, as he eyes a cake of barber’s soap he plans to steal and sell.
These recurrent scenes with Gavroche are starting to feel like fables, like an episode in the life of a familiar mythical figure, the way we saw a lot of with the bishop and occasionally with Madeleine. Gavroche feels like the bishop here, like this is just another a tale of our beloved little benevolent trickster god.
I think that feeling I’m getting has to do with the fact that this scene and Gavroche’s last scene (the one where he was going to steal Mabeuf’s apples but instead gives him Jean Valjean’s wallet) have the same premise and plot: it’s been a few days since Gavroche has eaten, and he has a clever plan to rectify that, but someone even worse off is about to need him to give up his dinner for them. He feels like Coyote or Brer Rabbit--you don’t need to know what happened to him last week or last month specifically, because his narrative is not novelistic in that way. Hugo says “It’s Tuesday, and Gavroche hasn’t eaten since Friday, but he has a plan,” and we know we’ve heard a hundred stories like this before, and we settle in for a variation on a familiar theme.
And: I think it’s very, very important that the other character who gets that treatment most consistently is the bishop.
Of the two, Gavroche is the purer form of the trickster--and the more charitable. He’s loud and brash and larger than life, and his manners ape the bourgeoisie--but not for the reasons Valjean does. It’s purely to poke fun at the world he steals from to get by. He’s got a quick insult for everyone--except for the poor who need his help. He feels less like a twelve-year-old than a force of nature. It’s like meeting Tom Bombadil.
He meets the mômes and takes them in and begins to show them the ropes of surviving as gamins. And their plot is not divorced from time--Magnon was arrested today, and when they meet Gavroche, they’ve been wandering for two hours. I’m inclined to see a parallel in Valjean meeting the bishop in that: for the bishop, it was just another incident not specifically connected to other incidents in his life, but Valjean had just come from the bagne and had been traveling for days.
I suppose this has to do with dynamic vs. static characters: some characters need to change, and the story is about tracking their change, whereas other characters are larger than life already, and they can be counted on to be so no matter when or where you find them.
Just like Lesgle, Courfeyrac, and the Bishop, Gavroche asks no questions.
And he’s almost literally magic: he hasn’t eaten in several days, but when lost children are hungry, he can still dig a sou out of his pocket.
And then, in an apostrophe against Magnon but also Fantine, Valjean, the Thenardiers, Jeanne Valjean, Georges Pontmercy, Gillenormand, maybe everyone in this book who has a child, he says
“It's all the same, if I had any mômes, I would hug them tighter than this.”
Though, of course, he doesn’t manage to.
....And then we reach the elephant and there is SO MUCH SYMBOLISM to tackle that I’m going to leave the second half of the chapter for tomorrow.

Brizilia
