These new machines have to be designed to fit a particular price point. While this is true for the older machines as well, materials science wasn’t at the point where you could make them absurdly cheap (disclaimer: they probably did, but those units didn’t survive to this day, see: survivorship bias).

I have a Singer 99k portable from 1922, which, adjusted for inflation, would cost $1,400+ today (source: ismacs.net average new cost of $77). If you’re spending that much on a machine, it’s your primary hobby or for business.

While these new machines are less durable, they are able to do the same or more work for a lower cost. If you look hard enough, you can find a very similar machine, for a similar price. The one I found is the Sailrite Ultrafeed LS. Portable machine, metal body, and a portable base that matches the Model 99.

I realized I never answered your question after falling down this wonderful rabbit hole, so: I’d say that it depends. If you’re an engineer designing sewing machines, then you’re probably designing more than just the cheap ones. If anything, the super cheap ones are funding your ability to be able to design better quality machines for those higher prices that may not sell very many.

The Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl can be used when a sewing machine is not available or practical. Here we will sew up some webbing on a sailboat's tack corner to make a "dog ear".
