Review of my Sailor Pro Gear Regular Fountain Pen
Tumblr media
I have had the pleasure of exploring the world of Sailor fountain pens, and it has been quite the journey. Initially, I found myself needing time to adjust to the unique feedback these fountain pens offer. At first, I was unsure if I enjoyed it, but as time went on, I began to develop a deep appreciation for it. This newfound appreciation has even sparked my interest in expanding my collection with more Sailor fountain pens.
When people liken the experience of writing with a Sailor fountain pen to that of using a sharp pencil, I couldn't agree more. While some may perceive it as scratchy, I personally find the writing experience to be smooth, albeit not as buttery as with Pilot nibs. Trying out a Sailor fountain pen is crucial in determining if it aligns with your writing preferences. It may take some time for this fountain pen to truly grow on you.

Upon unboxing my Sailor fountain pen, I was immediately impressed. However, I did encounter some initial struggles with the feedback until I dedicated more time to using it. My nib preference is either medium or broad. I purchased a medium nib assuming it would suffice. To my surprise, it wrote thinner than expected, so I would recommend considering going up a nib size to what you would normally use.
The allure of Sailor fountain pens, especially the Pro Gear line with its captivating array of colors, special editions, and limited editions, is simply irresistible. I am particularly drawn to the modern and contemporary design of the Pro Gear, which not only looks sleek but also feels incredibly comfortable in hand. While I have yet to try the slim version, my regular Pro Gear has proven to be a delightful companion for my writing adventures.

Someone on reddit asked about my journaling supplies so I thought I’d share here too!
Traveler's Notebook is my only journaling system, I started using it in 2017 and have been loving it ever since!
The 4 fountain pens shown are my current inked pens that I'm cycling through, the Sailor Pro Gear Slim is my newest baby 🥺🤧
Having both the Kodak Mini 3 Retro and Mini 2 Retro is probably unnecessary but it’s nice having options of printing my photos in either 3x3" or 2x3". The 3x3" sometimes take up a lot of space on the page, and the 2x3" is perfect for that spot on the inside cover of a TN insert. The Kodak photo paper is also less bulky than Fuji Instax films!
The Kokuyo Dotliner is super handy for sticking photos and ephemera on pages without using liquid glue or a glue stick, and I think it gives my pages a cleaner look as opposed to taping them down
The rest of my supplies are watercolours, assorted washi tape, markers/mildliners, fineliners, stickers, etc

Morning pages in the journal. ✒️
And yes, I caved to this adorable Sailor Pro Gear Slim Line & Friends Brown pen. It’s a teddy bear fountain pen and it’s very kawaii. 🥹 I do wish it was a little more transluscent, but I’m also happy to have another brown pen in my collection!

Like, serious question for the fountain pen enthusiasts: is it worth it to go on a complex hunt to get a sailor pro gear for slightly cheaper than normal (think 140 vs 200 quid)? Or is it worth it to pay retail price for Eu?
Or is it just Not All That?
What's the consensus.

Tell me abt your favorite fountain pen and ink of the moment!!! I want another pen (with a cool nib maybe? Fude or parallel?) and I’m loving diamine dragons blood
I'd say my pen of the moment is a Pilot Vanishing Point I got ground into Kirk Speer's CSI (cursive smooth italic). I don't tend to get on with Pilot's modern nibs, they're a bit too glassy smooth for me, but I keep trying their pens because their pen bodies and mechanisms are fantastic. So I tried the VP (as well as a decimo) and fell in love with the click mechanism, but as ever didn't like the nib. So I sent it off to get ground, figuring that it'd write more like other CSIs by Speer (that I tried at my local convention) than like a Pilot nib, and I was right. Now it's a really fun writer, and the italic adds some pizazz to my writing. It's not left my rotation since, except for brief cleaning.
Ink of the moment is a little harder. I think I'll go with the most recent bottle I've bought, even though it's not in any of my pens at the moment. It's Wearingeul's Metamorphosis, a nice dark maroon, kind of like Diamine's Oxblood but with a purpler tinge, and a light gold sheen. It's a stately color.

Having to study for most of the day because you're the ultimate procrastinator and didn't do anything until the day before the test.
Con: - You have to study
Pros: - You get to use your new favorite fountain pen - It has the finest nib ever so you're doing the "how much text can I fit on one page"-challenge

Hop on Plaza Japan (link) everyone! While they do have a lot of cool merch for a myriad of series, they also have cool fountain pens at wild prices alongside just cool stuff in general. (I just saw a Sailor Profit Standard 1911 at around 100 USD and Sailor Pro Gears at roughly 170 USD)
Fun fact: It's typically cheaper to import Japanese fountain pens from Japan than it is to purchase from a domestic retailer because why did I see the Pilot Custom 74 for around 100 USD when it's typically 170 USD at some retailers. Why is iroshizuku ink 12 USD on this site. Even with the shipping, it's still much cheaper.
