I've been playing some Super Robot Wars GC lately. You can capture enemy units, which is pretty neat.

In an 08th MS Team kinda mood...

For some reason I have Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team on my mind. Going to rewatch I think.

Clip in which our hero Shiro Amada takes on a prototype high-performance enemy mech in basically a maintenance pod with a gun bolted on it (and accidentally meets the love of his life, Aina Sahalin):

And later takes on a skilled enemy ace in a custom top-end mobile suit while piloting his rebuilt-from-scraps-and-spare-parts mobile suit. The ace is trying to buy time tol help the wounded evacuate, and also happens to be Aina's surrogate father figure.

And finally a battle scene made years after the series ended for the Blu-Ray release. Again, Shiro is fighting an enemy who is in an objectively better suit:

Love this because it has a good feel of the life of a real soldier in a war, rather than the disco-magical-boys-in-space. As a former ground pounder, this feels pretty authentic.

#I do wonder sometimes if it’s reasonable to consider Yuri the Garma counterpart to Ginias’ Char#but then. I’m not sure if Ginias is or isn’t considered a Char#he’s certainly a fuckass blond who betrays everyone including his sister!

Hmmm. On the one hand, Ginias is certainly Shiro's nemesis, in several senses, and the guy he and Aina ultimately have to thump in the face to get their happy ending.

On the other, he's not a rival in the sense it's normally deployed within Gundam, since he's essentially non-combatant and operates more like Gihren than Char. I don't think he even knows Shiro *exists* until the Ground-type comes barrelling towards him in the final act.

Also, pretty sure he gets points knocked off his Char-score for not caring about anyone else, ever, at all. I feel it's important to a Char clone that they at least have a semblance of human connection, warped though it may be. Even Rau had friends. Ginias is just in it for SCIENCE! (Or possibly POWER! which amounts to the same thing at this level of doomsday-device invention.)

So you'll recall I was trying to work out if I wanted to evoke Cima Garahau for a character in the Wishing on Space Hardware sequel. And of course that is tempting, because she's a fantastic design. But it's a design that's already kind of evoked by Gjallarhorn uniforms as standard, so would that really create the kind of visual distinction from 'real' Gjallarhorn that I wanted?

But then I realised: no, it's not Cima I want to have my ex-Gjallarhorn mercenary channel aesthetically (she's called Captain Anastasia Raleigh, as of last night).

It's this flash bastard.
