Oh my gosh

I went looking for the name of a flower I saw in Okinawa which I really loved. It was... hibiscus... x'D yeah. Bit anticlimactic, but still gorgeous!

However, in the search process, I came across THIS:

This is probably the most beautiful flower I have ever seen!! I mean I love all flowers and definitely don't put them into competition with each other! xD But it's just... woooow. Looks like a fairy. The flowers you'd find in Lothlorien or something. So light and airy and mystical. And that gradient of colors!!!

These are called sagaribana, aka powderpuff flower, aka barringtonia racemosa. It's only native to Japan in the Ryukyu islands. (eta because I realized that's not very clear: it's also found elsewhere, but in Japan only in Ryukyu.) Just another way Ryukyu is its own unique place. Apparently it only blooms in summer nights, and the flowers fall pretty much as soon as they bloom.

I went to Okinawa last August, but I can't remember seeing these. We usually stayed in the city at night because a lot of places closed around 8 so we had to go early for dinner. Also one time it rained the whole afternoon -> night. It was a short trip. I'd really like to go longer and do all the things I couldn't the first time, like spend more time enjoying the water, and go snorkeling. Definitely gonna add looking for these flowers to the list. Maybe next year (;-;)

I went to go check out the night-blooming Sagaribana (Barringtonia racemosa) in Naze with my friend @__cafo__ Sometimes referred to as the Powderpuff Tree, Sagaribana flowers are sometimes white or pink and emit a powerfully sweet scent when in bloom that attracts moths. more formally i want to take the opportunity to send a happy birthday salutation to miss thing, who i am grateful to have had the opportunity to exist along with in this small lifetime we live 😌

i cannot speak for anyone either than myself but i do hope karlie knows that she’s been a real motivating force in my life, to be more resilient, to be hard working and kind to those i work with, to make exercise and activity more of a daily ritual, to maintain compassion, a sort of honor, and to find the humor and beauty in things, even in the dark.

i decided to take the day as a day for rest. all disneygoers can attest that everyone needs a little R&R after a full few days in the park. so i watched a small movie at a pop up planetarium the other day—on the 9th floor of a building next to a theater—about the life of a night blooming flower called the sagaribana (or barringtonia), which blooms for one night only before falling into the waters that it hangs above. and the movie made a deep comparison between this fleeting blossom, humanity, and the stars above it.

that from the perspective of the stars, our lives must seem as short as the sagaribana’s bloom appears to us as they fall by morning. might we all appreciate the beauty of this life, and the way we all will flow down the same river.

idk lol i just felt very thankful again for all the mercurial moments i have had the chance to see, or dare i say feel a part of, and all the things it has inspired me to do in my own life, because of karlie.

i hope karlie has a great birthday and a great birthyear 🥰 i just know she’ll rock her 30s. and make no mistake, i’ll be here, excited to keep an eye on her 🥴

Today, we had a dinner party at Palette Kumoji at the launch party of the photo exhibition held in January, which was postponed with the photographers. It was fun to talk about the photos for over two hours. Even though I ate the most expensive eel set, I had him treat me. On the way home, Sagaribana was in bloom. While feeling the pain of being scattered tomorrow, I was wondering how long I would be able to share my time with my seniors, so I went home with my stomach full of loneliness.

#tbt to spending a few hours last weekend on Kakeroma Island catching up with friends, eating lunch at Mokka, finding a rare day-blooming Sagaribana flower, trying the Miki sherbet at @kakeromacafe , and wondering around Nishiamuro Village. Also, thankful for the chance to spend a few moments with Asazaki Ikue at Nagahama Beach in Shodon Village. It was such a treat to speak with her about the history of Shodon a bit and hear her and Yamato perform with 3 Ainu musicians, who she brought to Amami to film a segment for NHK. It's amazing how similar the indigenous languages and folk music of southern Amami Oshima and northern Hokkaido are.
