The Safari Collection:  SCHOOLS, SCHOLARS AND SCONES

Sasaab is located on Westgate Community Conservancy. In 2021, we generated US$ 111,030 through tourism to support development, school bursaries and infrastructure in the community. Maintaining relationships is key, which is why we invite the Samburu community to Sasaab twice a year to discuss the projects we support in their area. May saw the first of 2022’s meetings get underway with great success. From freshwater wells to scholarships and health clinics, initiatives were discussed and everyone’s suggestions and questions were heard. This is key in creating a sense of community ownership as well as keeping us accountable to our greatest stakeholders. Our 2021 Infographic is now out, detailing what our Footprint achieved last year. Despite the challenging pandemic year, we raised US$ 855,954 for a diverse range of community and conservation initiatives across Kenya. See below for a visual of what we accomplished with your help. 2021 was also the year The Safari Collection became climate positive, as we off-set the company’s entire carbon footprint. This was through the Association for Coastal Ecosystem Services (ACES) and an impactful community scheme planting mangrove forests on the Kenyan coast.

STAND TALL IT’S TEATIME

When Giraffe Manor closed in May, we took the opportunity to hold two important teatime events. Firstly, children from two schools in Kibera were invited for a special teatime experience; they popped pellets onto greedy giraffe tongues, learnt about conservation and enjoyed teatime treats. Secondly, we hosted fundraising teas for guests from Nairobi, which raised US$ $7,000 for conservation.

SAMBURU SCHOOLS

Our brand-new classroom at Lempaute Primary School received a traditional Samburu blessing in a vibrant opening ceremony. Attended by our directors and the community at large, in was a joyous occasion of song and dance. The nearby Lpus Leluai Primary School also received a generous donation of new technology equipment from a Sasaab guest and his family.

OFF TO SCHOOL

These are the proud faces of our five latest girl-scholars to go off to high school under our Conservation Scholars Programme. Selected from communities around Sasaab and Solio Lodge, they will be sponsored throughout their four years of secondary education, allowing them to focus fully on their learning and future aspirations, without worrying about money.
