Taste of Cherry (1997)
Movie #1,079 • WATCHLIST WEDNESDAYS
This is the very first Iranian movie I've reviewed which is slightly shocking after this many. I thought it was very funny how annoyed Ebert got in his 1-star (!) review...
This is an exercise in patience to some degree (whether you understand "what" the director is doing or not). I think it primarily works because of Homayoun Ershadi's performance in the lead. I felt like you got to know him pretty well. You don't always have to do the 5 W questions for that to happen.
And I dug the ending. Not to make this a review of Ebert's review, but there seems to be a prevalent attitude amongst the old guard of criticism which constantly circles back to some idea of realism being the thing which matters most (unless the film is explicitly trying to be surreal). The pullback is short, subtle and unexpected. I found it to be of great service in place of the ambiguous. It makes you realize just how bizarre the entire setup/conceit actually was from the very start. The movie is philosophical and also metaphorically surreal (people don't often go around looking to pay randos to bury them after they've committed suicide) but presented as the opposite visually: stark static shots of people talking set against an unforgiving, arid landscape. So it's playing a trick on you without you ever really noticing it. And the finale is an apology of sorts. The movie meant no harm.
SCORE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½
PS. I'm eliminating the ¼ and ¾ scores from this point further.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐎𝐒𝐓𝐗𝐑𝐒 𝖯𝖱𝖤𝖲𝖤𝖭𝖳𝖲: SLASH, AXL & ROSE MILLER!
ㅤㅤslash evan miller, o skatista.
ㅤㅤaxl matthew miller, o baterista.

🍃🌸🍃 Sayyida Zainab (sa): A Timeless Role Model for Humanity
Throughout the months of Muharram and Safar we hear of the trials and tribulations that Sayyida Zainab bint Ali (sa) had to endure after the martyrdoms of her brother, Imam Hussain ibn Ali (sa), her children, family members, and companions. But what practical lessons do we as a community take from her immense contribution to humanity?
How well do we appreciate the monumental impact she made on the establishment of our faith and the implications that may have on our lives today?
After the tragic, barbaric martyrdom of Imam Hussain (as), the survival of the fourth Imam, Imam Zayn al-Abidin (as), was paramount for the continuation of Imamate. It was Sayyida Zainab (sa) who helped protect him while he was ill, and prevented his captors from killing him through her strength, leadership, and support. It was also Sayyida Zainab (sa) who ensured that the message of Imam Hussain (as) did not vanish from the pages of history. It was with the constant remembrance of the tragic events of Karbala, in the forum of majalis (gatherings of sorrow), that the message of Imam Hussain (as) has remained pulsing with life until today.
As a community, we should continue to recognize the immense contributions that women have made throughout Islamic history. By acknowledging this crucial role, more opportunities may arise for women to be active participants, leaders, and contributors within our centers, mosques, workplaces, households, communities, and schools.
🌸 The Strength of Sayyida Zainab (sa)
With the survival of the Imamate at stake, it was crucial to protect Imam Zayn al-Abidin (as). Sayyida Zainab (sa) knew that the responsibility of the care of the orphaned children and widows would fall on her shoulders. The fourth Imam (as) was in no condition, due to his illness, to offer her any physical assistance in standing up against the oppressors. We cannot begin to imagine the strength required of an individual enduring the kind of trauma that the survivors of Ashura witnessed and suffered. There was also the emotional toll of the immense loss of loved ones and the sad reality of the brutality and inhumanity inflicted upon the family of the Prophet of Islam (S).
Women must not underestimate their strength, even during the most difficult times. These are situations when being proactive may be of the utmost importance. Imam Zayn al-Abidin (as) did not request Sayyida Zainab (sa) to step back and do nothing. In fact, he relied on her strength a great deal.
🌸 The Leadership of Sayyida Zainab (sa)
One of the most important qualities of a leader is confidence. Sayyida Zainab (sa), without question, was not lacking in this area. Islam’s foundation is deep-rooted in the contributions and sacrifices of exemplary women. As mentioned in our previous blog, ‘Raising Confident Young Muslim Women’, one can reference Sayyida Fatima (sa), Lady Khadijah (sa), and undoubtedly, Sayyida Zainab (sa), among many others, as examples of strong, intelligent, and independent women.
How was Sayyida Zainab (sa), surrounded by soldiers who had just murdered her family, able to have the confidence needed to lead the remaining women and children and protect the fourth Imam (as)? Part of the answer was that her upbringing raised her with belief and trust in the ultimate salvation and justice of God. She also learned that her humanity is valuable and precious. It was this personal connection and trust in God that freed her from any fear of her oppressors and made her an immeasurable leader. We must all take note of this when raising our children, especially when it comes to raising our daughters.
Now our communities should strive to increase leadership opportunities for women. Our centers, workplaces, and mosques should continue to work hard to follow the way of life Prophet Muhammad (S) established, and to value, educate, and respect women. In some cases, today, unfortunately, women may often not feel comfortable in pursuing leadership positions due to the lack of female representation. A possible solution is to create specific positions allocated solely for women so that there are many opportunities to hear their voices and perspectives.
🌸 Sayyida Zainab (sa) was a visionary
To be a visionary, you should think beyond the here and now and be a forward thinker. The preservation of the Imamate was paramount to the survival of the religion of Islam. Sayyida Zainab (sa) knew that she had to protect her nephew, Imam Zayn al-Abidin (as) and did so as best she could with God’s Divine protection and help. She remained steadfast, protected him physically when necessary, and publicly spoke out when the truth was distorted and covered.
Sayyida Zainab (sa) also knew that to safeguard the future of her grandfather’s religion and its believers people must always remember the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (as), his family, and companions. Women became the flagbearers of the message of Imam Hussain (as). From one majlis (gathering of sorrow) to the next, they have passed the baton of guidance that contained the true message of Islam up until this day.
🌸 Women’s Role in Society
Sayyida Zainab’s (sa) strength, leadership, and vision are a lesson for men and women alike in today’s world. Women have an important role to play in all aspects of life: at home, at work, in the community, at the university, at our centers, and mosques. Taking the lessons we learn throughout the months of Muharram and Safar, we can strive to build a better community of inclusion and appreciation of one another. We can create more opportunities and positions for women to take on leadership roles to help our communities continue to grow.

Chalo Zamane Ki Khaatir, Ye Zabr Bhi Seh Le
Kabhi Mile Bhi Agar, Toot Kar Nahi Milna

Homayoun Ershadi in Taste of Cherry (Abbas Kiarostami, 1997)
Cast: Homayoun Ershadi, Safar Ali Moradi, Mir Hossein Noori, Abdolrahman Bagheri, Afshin Khorshid Bakhtiari, Elham Imani. Screenplay: Abbas Kiarostami. Cinematography: Homayun Payvar. Film editing: Abbas Kiarostami.
Taste of Cherry won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and has a host of admirers, but Roger Ebert found it "excruciatingly boring" and listed it as one of his "most hated films" on his web site. Having seen the film and read the review, I have to wonder if Ebert was in the wrong mood when he saw and wrote about it. I saw it in relaxed anticipation and found it anything but boring. Not a masterpiece, perhaps, but a strangely haunting film, whose images stayed with me through the following day: the winding dirt roads in the hills outside Tehran; the cascades of bare soil turned up by massive agricultural equipment; the shadow of the protagonist, Mr. Badii (Homayoun Ershadi), projected upon these mounds of dirt; the faces of the men the protagonist tries to enlist in his plan: a young soldier (Safar Ali Moradi), a seminarian (Mir Hossein Noori), the taxidermist (Abdolrahman Bagheri). I was struck by Kiarostami's choice of those three men, ethnic aliens in Iran -- a Kurd, an Afghani, a Turk -- as if to emphasize the inner turmoil that mirrors the external conflicts of the region. I was tantalized by the suspense about what Badii wants the other man to do. And as Ebert points out, we suspect that he is cruising the outskirts of Tehran to find a sexual partner, which, given that homosexuality is a capital offense in Iran, is a frighteningly risky thing to do. And when we learn that Badii wants someone to throw dirt over him after he commits suicide in a grave he has dug for himself, I was intrigued by what has driven him to this brink. Ebert took a literal-minded approach to all of this, wanting to know why we are being led to believe that Badii is gay and to know more about what has driven him to this extremity. Have we not learned long ago not to expect full backstories of characters in literature and film or be able to explicate them in some definitive sense? Isn't that why Kiarostami uses the "distancing" device at the end of showing the film itself being made? I'm content with what it tells us of Badii, and with the emotions and ideas demonstrated by the men he picks up: the young soldier's terror, the seminarian's steadfast faith, the taxidermist's hard-earned wisdom. I was struck by the way we watch Badii at the end through the window of his apartment, as if we will never get any closer, but then see his face as he lies in the hole fleetingly illuminated by lightning. But Taste of Cherry is not so much a character-driven film as a fable: a story about the mysteries of human existence and the interplay of lives. It is full of reverberations of one scene with another and of the events in the film with the political, social, and environmental troubles that haunt our times. It can't be reduced to conventional narrative or even allegorical terms. It took me someplace alien -- i.e., Iran, and the possible last day of a man's life -- and yet deeply, humanly familiar.

Safar Story bulan Syawal 2023

2 Muharram 61 Hijri
The caravan of Imam Hussain (as) was continuously followed by Ibn e Ziyad's troops from Makkah onwards. The caravan of Imam Hussain (as) reached the land of Karbala on 2 Muharram 61 hijri. Imam Hussain (as) before reaching Karbala told his companions:
"It seems that I will be killed in this venture (Is safar men main mar dia jaonga)." He told his companions about a dream he had that day that he was being chased by the hounds who wanted to attack and harm him and one hound in particular which had white spots was more vicious in it's attacks."
When they reached the borders of Karbala Imam Hussain (as) horse stopped and did not move. When the horse did not move Imam Hussain (as) left the saddle and approached the ground. He inquired about the name of the land from passers by and recited,
Verily, this is the land that my grandfather told me about, this is the place that was promised."
He bought the land and asked Hazrat Abbas (as) to set the tents. The caravan stopped. Maqtal writes that the glow on the face of Imam Hussain (as) increased as he arrived on Karbala. Imam Hussain (as) examined the land and went on it's far and near plains (nashaib or Faraz). He used to stop at a spot, shed some tears, look at the sky and move ahead. He repeated this act several times until he reached the deepest spot on Karbala. He spotted a lady in black veil wailing while removing rocks from that piece of land.
Imam Hussain (as) who had stopped at a distance shedding tears was followed by his son Ali Akbar (as) who viewed the same sight and asked who was the lady and what was she doing? Imam Hussain (as) cried and said that,
"That is your grandmother the lady of the heavens who had descended from Heavens on Karbala tonight. That spot on the land is where I will fall from the back of the horse and where I will be beheaded soon. She is removing rocks from that place where I will fall."
The heavens did not fall and the earth did not stop moving when these words were said however the heavens and earth and all that is in it bore witness the Patience of the heart of Imam Hussain (as). He was ready to sacrifice all he had for Allah (swt). His tears were not because he was to be killed but for the state of affairs that had led to threaten tauheed and the essence of Islam.
Tonight is the first night of Imam Hussain (as) and his children and friends in Karbala. The present tense is used because as per parallel time theory of science Karbala again is writing itself the way it happened in 61 hijri and the children of Imam Hussain (as) are witnessing the rise of troops, spears and swords around them. The pain of being spatially and temporally restricted to not reach the dear beloved is a grief that eats away the soul.
