SAE J1708 Protocol

Hi everyone! In this blog post, I’m going to share with you some basics of SAE J1708 protocol, which is widely used in heavy-duty vehicles for data communication. If you are interested in learning how to communicate with different electronic control units (ECUs) in your vehicle, this post is for you!

SAE J1708 is a standard that defines the physical and data link layers of a serial data bus for vehicle communication. It uses a twisted pair of wires with a baud rate of 9600 bps and a message format of 8 data bits, 1 start bit, 1 stop bit and no parity. The messages are composed of a message identification (MID) byte, followed by up to 21 data bytes and a checksum byte.

The MID byte identifies the sender or receiver of the message, and it can range from 0 to 255. Some common MIDs are:

- 128: Engine #1 - 130: Transmission #1 - 136: Brakes — System Controller - 140: Instrument Cluster - 248: Data Link Escape

The data bytes contain the actual information that is being transmitted or requested, such as engine speed, coolant temperature, fuel level, etc. The checksum byte is used to verify the integrity of the message, and it is calculated by adding all the bytes of the message and taking the two’s complement of the result.

To communicate with an ECU using SAE J1708 protocol, you need a device that can send and receive messages on the bus, such as a scan tool or a laptop with an adapter cable. You also need to know the MID and the data format of the ECU you want to talk to. For example, if you want to request the engine speed from Engine #1, you need to send a message with MID 128 and data byte 190 (which corresponds to engine speed parameter). The ECU will respond with a message with MID 128 and data byte 190 followed by two more data bytes that contain the engine speed value in rpm.
