Jean Grey/Marvel Girl/Phoenix: X-Men: Evolution

Ultimately I have mixed feelings. I thought she was nice and cool enough, and her powers neat. However, I couldn’t understand why she was upset when Scott showed or gained interest from other girls when miss ma’am herself had a boyfriend.

Kitty calls him cute? Jean immediately dismisses it and calls him stiff and exacting to dissuade her.

Taryn hangs out with Scott during the carnival? Bestie, why aren’t you third-wheeling with her and Duncan?

Rogue gave Scott a Christmas Gift and Scott willingly wore it? Let’s pretend that we all are Scott and don’t know Rogue’s crushing on him; is it that hard to believe that Rogue is fond of him because—unlike a certain redhead who invited Rogue during their first meeting that she is free to contact them via whatever communicator she gave her only to not be shown attempting any form of communicating since, having derisively referring her as “[Principle Darkholme’s] little rogue” at one point*— he had actively sought out her friendship and was one of the contributing factors of her joining? Why is Rogue not allowed to give Scott a present when we haven’t seen Jean gift him anything?

Taryn cornering Scott? Someone explain to me why Jean is more upset about her supposed bestie flirting with Scott and not the fact that she’s trying to snatch his shades and inadvertently endanger everyone? Taryn beats her to the punch at the Sadie Hawkin’s dance asking out Scott. Oh no…she wasn’t actually able to go dance with the guy who isn’t her boyfriend.

Just to be clear, I am not: a) attempting to paint her as a villain; like I said earlier, she is a kind girl and can be great friend. She very well could have mentally lobotomized Fred for kidnapping and trying to date her against his will, but instead tried to calmly reason with him yet again before resorting to more defensive/offensive measures to get him to back off. b) excusing Scott’s behavior either; not a huge fan that he sometimes tries flirting(?) with Jean despite her having a boyfriend (who yes, is a jerk, but she’s the one choosing to date him still) and even when he briefly gets together with Taryn.

HOW. E. VER.

Story and character-wise, when it involves Scott and sometimes his relationship with other girls he might be interested in/visa versa, Jean comes across as slightly territorial/entitled towards him. It might have come across with more tact, but Scott was right to point out she was jealous of Taryn flirting with him.

She could have broken up with Duncan a while ago, but DIDN’T (and let’s be honest; she had every good reason to but STILL didn’t) until Homecoming King wanted her to use her powers for him upon discovering she was a mutant.

Oh, and let’s not forget how huffy she was when Scott helped out her and Magma during the last minutes of a training session. He for sure could have kept his comments to himself and read the room that Magma was embarrassed about not succeeding in the task, but Jean did not have to lose her temper and demean his masculinity.

I found it fascinating upon later finding out that the writers of the show had to be reminded to make Jean likable so that it would make sense for Scott’s romantic interest in her and them later getting together (don’t recall link; someone provide it please!)

^ I genuinely wish there was more development and interaction between her and Rogue beyond their feelings for Scott and the Power Surge episode.

*Don’t understand why they dropped the secret communicator sub-plot after showing it as a twist at the end of Rogue’s debut episode. I mean, when Rogue and Scott were stranded in that mountainside(?), Rogue could have remembered that communicator, whipped it out, frantically tried to contact the X-Men, confusing the rest of the teens back at home at Cerebro’s nonstop beeping and static only for Jean to remember that communicator, answer the call, made contact with Rogue, send the precise or close enough coordinates to the professors in the Jet, then tried to calm and assure Rogue before the shaky connection eventually got cut off from the violent snowstorm or being damaged by the water.

But I digress; this is about X-Men:Evo’s Scott x Jean.

Like I said above: at the end of the day, my feelings for Jean are mixed when it comes to her being part of a couple with Scott. I enjoy her as a character, and she does have some sweet moments that help me see the potential of Her x Scott. At the end of the day though, even taking away my preference for Scott x Rogue, I have a hard time picturing them lasting long as a truly happy couple in the Evolution universe, and prefer them more as good friends.

I’d love to hear fellow Scoguies/anyone else’s opinion too!

Things i want to remember

7/15/23

She doesn’t drink coffee.

She drinks tea.

In big mugs with textured black and white designs

Her dad got her “fancy tea” with a picture of Princess Diana on the box

That’s what she drinks.

She has piles of books at the foot of her bed to read.

Organized by genre, and order she wants to read them.

She moved my favorite book to the top of the list

And she has the unedited version of Dorian Gray

She’s been reading the same book since middle school

And is reading 7 at the same time.

She doesn’t dance in the rain.

Not because she doesn’t like it

But because her hair is too curly and too thick and takes too long to dry

Speaking of, when she takes a shower she keeps her hair in clips until it is dry enough

Or else it won’t lay right

She knows how to waltz

“It’s just a box step in ¾ time” she says

And I quote the show we’re watching together and pull her in to dance

And she teaches me the steps

She worried about her neighbors seeing us

The conservative ones who faces her always open window

I ask her why she doesn’t just close the window all the time then

“Because I like the light” she says

She blushes very easily

The first time I said “i love you” I could see her scarlet cheeks 20 feet away

Her hands and feet are always cold

“Warm heart” she says when i point it out

And I joke that it balances out her warm cheeks

She sends long voice messages instead of texts

“It’s important you hear my tone, I don’t want to worry you” she says

She knows I was already worried

And she reassured me before she can even see me or hear me

She likes color theory

It’s her current hyperfixation

“You’re a summer” she says

She pauses the show to point out the characters colors schemes

She likes laying on top of people

When we cuddle she doesn’t like spooning, she likes to crush people

“Maybe it's the autism” she says

I always worry that my hip is hurting her

But she tells me she's comfortable

She likes wearing sun dresses

“All the girls are wearing sundresses!” she says

Excited that she’s not alone across the sea

She likes how they flow

Her favorite movie is mulan

And she is appalled that I haven’t seen it

“It’s the gayest disney movie!” she says

I laugh

She likes to mess with my bracelets when we hold hands

I find her fidgeting with them

She doesn’t like action movies

She has never seen any marvel movies

So she doesn’t get my references

But that’s ok

She doesn’t like blood

It freaks her out and is a phobia of hers

She hasn’t seen kill bill but made it though pulp fiction

Her favorite cake is chocolate with chocolate frosting

“Keeping it simple, although i like pretty much all cake”

And she buys them from ingles

Her favorite thai restaurant is little Bangkok

She orders her noodles at a level 3 spice

And always tells the story of how the waiter didn’t believe her one time

She got a new phone case over the summer

It has poppies on it

With a gold outline

It reminds me of us mixed together

Her favorite color isn’t red, it's a deep blue

Like my bracelet

She used to say it was green as a kid, it made her giggle

And red is her favorite to wear

But it’s that blue.

She’s growing out her hair

She wants to cut it like Sadie Sink in All Too Well

She’s almost there

She gets this savory crepe from the French market

It’s has ham and cheese and I don’t like it

But she loves it she gets that and a cup of English breakfast tea

She likes spinach on her pizza

“It’s a good way to trick myself into eating greens”

That’s how we ordered it in Chicago

And how I order it now

When I got to her house the day she got home

She ran out the front door and hugged me

And her phone fell out of her pocket

And we had to use my flashlight to find it

The second to last night I stayed over

She curled up to me twice

She had a nightmare

She fell asleep on my arms both times

When she came to my house

She was wearing a white shirt with a green crocheted sweater over it

She took the sweater off to talk to me

She was wearing her cure shirt the last time I saw her

The one that has the days of the week on it

She slept in it a lot

It was more faded then I remembered it being

She had that blue and gray dress hanging in her closet

With pockets that she loved so much

That tied around the waist

She had two of the mugs of water on her nightstand

Or was it three

It was hard to see through my tears

Between them were several tissues

To show she had been crying too

She waved at me before I walked out the door

I waved back

2024 Reading Review

Overall notes:

Anna Karenina truly is one of the best novels ever. It really, honestly, truly is a classic. I know a lot of people shit on classics, but goddamn. It really deserves all the hype.

With the exception of a few truly amazing stand outs, I felt like it was a poor year of reading. I want more 4-5 starred

That being said, some really amazing books. I am never going to stop thinking about Henry, Henry.

One of my goals this year was to read more sapphic fiction, which I definitely accomplished. As per usual, it was a lot of queer reading and I'm thinking maybe I should start including more breakdowns on that.

Next year's reading goals:

I want to read all of Shakespeare's plays in order of publication. I have read most of them, but it's been a while since I've read some of them and I've neglected some of the histories. Plus, I think it'll be really cool to see the evolution of his craft playwright by reading them in order.

I am hoping to raise my average rating within the 4-5 star range.

Am I really gonna read War and Peace this year since I liked Anna Karenina so much? Yeah, I think I am

Idk, man, I'm just trying to make my way through my never ending list. I'm just gonna keep tearing my way through the waitlist at the library

Hmmm, first post. English is not my first language, but I want to expand my audience, so I'm using a translator. If there are any mistakes, please post or something.

Haven't been here in a while, so I thought I'd start fresh. My pronouns and stuff are in my profile.

I plan to write small fanfics here, or just something very small. I'm a member of most fandoms, but I'm only going to describe here the ones where I'll be able to write something about the characters. I write both NSFW and SFW. Some ideas will be taken from TikTok. Ok I know I am definitely reaching here but cousin Alison from the St Clare’s books = homosexual behavior

Args I should’ve live-blogged this from the start! I was binge re-reading these children‘s books all week and I’m for the first time realizing how incredibly crush-like Alison’s behavior towards the woman and girls she’s obsessed with is - like yes she tends to like them for superficial reasons and the other girls rightly make fun of her for being a feather-head and always falling for people who turn out to be shallow and not so nice… but that she keeps falling for pretty girls in the first place? Over and over again, every book? No Heterosexual Explanation dot jpeg

It starts in the second book she’s in, Summer Term at St. Clare’s, with “her precious Sadie.” who’s quickly the only one whose opinion she values and the only thing she’ll talk about, as the other characters notice, “She's like a gramophone record always set to say" Sadie says. . . . Sadie says . . . Sadie says . .”, and it keeps going throughout all the books adsfg

- ‘Miss Quentin certainly was extremely good looking. She had black piercing eyes, and a beautiful voice. Alison thought she was wonderful.’ ‘The class disliked Miss Quentin's “dears” and “lambs” and other names-except Alison. For a little while, when Lucy was eleven and twelve, she envisioned herself as a novelist. She’d write tons of stories of girls growing up, making friends, maybe falling in love, moving around the world, enjoying their lives, hating their lives, generally just breathing. She devoured all the books she could. Lots of Judy Blume, S.E. Hinton, even a Maureen Daly book thrown in every now and then, to shake it up. She stayed up at night reading, she read under her desk at school when the lesson was too boring and easy to pay attention to, and she wrote stories wherever she could. She even wrote them on napkins at restaurants and food courts if she was desperate (and she often was – often still is). Mom used to sing “Paperback Writer” to her when she’d scribble furiously about some young woman at a café in Paris. Lucy had never been to Paris, and she’d never been a college student. Somehow, she still felt qualified. Story of her life.

That drive to be a novelist dissipated after a little while. Lucy still thought about stories all the time, made up characters when she felt lonely. She must have dreamt up a thousand imaginary friends in waiting and examination rooms when she was pregnant with Elenore. Sure, Will was there, holding her hand all the way through, but there’s nothing lonelier than the glares grown women give you when you sit underneath a “What to Know about Pregnancy” infographic, clearly there for yourself, for your baby. Lucy must have made up a thousand friends to get her through it, all versions of Sadie, Sam, Daniel. If there’s anything better than one of each, it’s 300 of each.

As the years go by, she’s fond of telling people she hasn’t ruled out the possibility of being a novelist. She’s still in touch with Chris Egan, whose dissertation committee she sat on over ten years ago. He’s published three novels, and he always says that if she has any material, he’d love to take a look. Lucy always says she thinks she’ll take him up on it. She never does. But maybe she might.

She and the family head back home to Detroit shortly after Emma’s high school graduation. They end up at Lucy’s favorite used bookstore, and as always, they wander right to the shelves on criticism. Fiction, poetry, cinema, drama. All of it. It’s tradition.

But this is the first time Lucy’s found a used copy of her own book at the store. Her first book. The one based on her dissertation. She picks it up and marvels at it. Doesn’t matter how many copies of it she has at her home. Nothing like discovering your book on Victorian women’s writing and psychoanalysis in the wild. Nothing like that at all.

Will nudges her.

“Is that what you had in mind when you said you’d be a paperback writer?” he asks.

Lucy doesn’t answer. Will knows what she means. And maybe she’ll call Chris Egan. He lives in the Ann Arbor area again. Maybe he’d be willing to read some of the scattered thoughts and characters she jotted onto the sickbag on the flight from LaGuardia to Metro.

But maybe she won’t call him.

Maybe she’ll just buy her own book and tell a funny story to her graduate students when classes resume in the fall.

Maybe she’ll do that.

1. Wendy Marvell from fairy tail - she starts out as a shy support healer and becomes a great combat medic. Plus dragon slayers are cool and she’s so adorable. 

2. Eda clawthorne from the owl house - a great conwoman slash mother figure who’s queer and disabled. 

3. Rachel from Animorphs - she loves fashion, shopping and ripping her enemies apart. 

4. Sadie Kane from Kane chronicles - I love her attitude, her relationship with her brother and her look

5. Marinette dupain-cheng from miraculous - I like girls who are competent, messy and vulnerable. As someone with anxiety issues who was bullied by people like Chloe, I relate to her so much.

6. Yang Xiao long from Rwby - she’s badass, beautiful, nurturing and her abandonment issues make her more complex. Probably a lesbian.

7. Anya forger from spy x family - a little girl who’s a little shit with improbable skills. I love her dynamic with her family and with Damian. 

8. Toph beifong from atla - she’s a disabled little girl who can kick your ass, but isn’t one dimensional.

9. Peril from wings of Fire -  I loved her friendship with turtle and her attitude was fun to read,

10. Sydney sage from Bloodlines - she helped me work through some of my eating issues. She’s a nerd, she’s very kind and probably demisexual.
