SBC: Is Rick Warren Right About Female Pastors?
Rick Warren cherry-picks and bends verses to support his assertions that there can be female pastors. The SBC hardly has firmer ground to stand on. What a joyous mess to watch from outside the confines of southern baptist dogmas.
Did you know the Southern Baptist denomination was founded to protect the institution of slavery? In 1845, Baptists in the northern United States decided that Baptist slaveowners could not function as missionaries. Baptists in the South took that as an affront and a threat to their livelihoods – dependent upon owning other human beings – and so broke from American Baptist Churches USA. You’ll see…

Who Would Fight The Bigots?
I generally steer clear of religious topics.  I am a non-religious person and I realize that I am in the minority here.  I respect my friends’ beliefs, their religious choices, but I do not share them for a number of reasons.  I am a realist who, since around the age of three, needs to see to believe.  That said, having been raised in a Jewish/Catholic household, I know a little about both…

I'm so genuinely mad about Saddleback Church getting expelled from the Southern Baptist Church because they ordained three women as pastors. That's literally it. Thousands of people voted that women in positions of spiritual authority is something so fundamentally opposed to Christianity that a church that allows this can't be part of this denomination. This fuckin evangelical megachurch ran by a guy who says Christian businesses shouldn't have to pay for their employees birth control and who numerous times reiterated his opposition to gay marriage, he's too feminist for the Southern Baptist convention. This guy whose entire argument for ordaining women is, by his own proud admission, not based on the the reality of seeing women successfully lead churches or him "becoming liberal" but instead solely on scripture, this guy's too radical, his church has gone too far on the Woman Question. It's infuriating. American evangelicalism is like "there are three genders: People (white men who present and act the right way), Breeding Stock Helpmeets (white women who present and act the right way), and Freaks (everyone else, including those in the first two categories if they ever step out of line)."

by Denny Burk | Rick Warren and Saddleback have done us the service of showing their hand. They want to persuade us to abandon what the Bible teaches and follow them in another direction. How will we respond in New Orleans?   The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) announced earlier this year that Saddleback church had been removed from the...

what was your "normal" church
bounced around a lot, mostly protestant denominations. my grandpa was a pastor, my mom was a worship leader in her early twenties & a missionary, & my dad was a part of the huge 70s revival movement (he was directly involved in keith green’s last days ministry) & was also a missionary for many years before they married. so i grew up & was baptized in the baptist church, then almost became catholic, then afterwards, went on to a branch called “calvary chapel” (which was founded in california so i went to a handful of those around where i lived) for a while.
after all that, i went to probably the most extremest one from middle school thru high school. it was a old fashioned pentecostal mega church (the kind where they encourage you to “speak in tongues,” & give all your money “to god” i.e. back in their pockets, etc). was on the youth worship team by time i was fifteen & indoctrinated to stay abstinent & told gay people were going to hell. i actively took part in some sermons that taught those exact messages.
but after my sister became a teen mom, it broke my faith in the church as an institution. my family tried to take us to another mega church called “saddleback” but after that point, it was useless. i only tried one more time during college to get back in but thankfully, circumstances led me to the right people & i came out as bisexual instead.

And here's what's up with dominionist zealots. You know, those folks who want women to stop voting, and stop insisting on reproductive rights?
Here's your periodic reminder of what dominionists* trying to accomplish:
*They'll tell you they prefer to be called "Christian Reconstructionists". Don't let them have it. Also, "Christofascist" obscures the fact that they're actively engaged in overthrowing the government.
"Dominionists" it is.
