Psalm 27:4
Yes Lord, this is always something I return to whenever I am alone and any devotion reminds me of dwelling in the house of the Lord.

A week or two ago I was thrifting in NYC and was shocked to come across this, in pristine condition and filled with prime Wooton content (praise his name, for all of us are he). I didn't end up buying it but was still shocked to see Adventures in Odyssey out in the wild.
lmao they've released so many of these over the years. Brian had an Odyssey bible that was branded off of the cartoon series. It had little comic book inserts where Dylan and Jessie (the cartoon versions of Jimmy and Donna) learned asinine moral lessons

love using my knowledge of the bible to write fics. don't so much love having to look up every verse i want to reference in king james version instead of whichever of the three other versions i memorized verses in because if this character is 27 in ~2012 he definitely didn't grow up reading the berean study bible
#one thing about me is i did in fact memorize a very large amount of bible verses growing up#but they span from old niv to new niv to esv to bsb when it comes to which version it was in#and sometimes i had to memorize them in more than one !#unfortunately i just KNOW nathaniel is a kjv girlie through and through#which is fine for the most part but ugh some of these verses just flow so much better in other versions#not that the prose style matters for the actual bible but i'm trying to make MY prose sound nice#and then i have to stick a clunky kjv verse in there when i know esv sounds so much nicer 😔#i AM aware this is such a hyperspecific problem to have and no one actually cares but i'm still going to complain#also you can quote me on hawthorne being a kjv girlie#i am definitely the only one assigning specific bible translations to characters. but i'm RIGHT#hello grace here

But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’ “ ‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ ”

A New Heaven and a New Earth
21 1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7 Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
The New Jerusalem, the Bride of the Lamb
9 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. 11 It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. 13 There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. 14 The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. 16 The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long. 17 The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144 cubits thick. 18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. 19 The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. 21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.
22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Lesbian anon- do you think it would be for the best to leave any temptations though?I've had issues for years with this sin and I go back to it everytime
Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.
1 Corinthians 7:18 - note the strong language of flee.
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
1 Corinthians 10: 12-13
For the lips of an adultress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths are crooked, but she knows it not.
Proverbs 5: 3-6. The adultress in this context can be seen as any form of sex outside God's design of husband and wife. Unwise sex (including things like pornography or mastubation) results in hurt and disgrace.
We are encouraged to run from temptation, to flee, to turn away from temptation. It may be a life long battle, but giving into sin--and specifically sexual sin is mentioned a lot--will bring destruction. But remember:
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do bot have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Hebrews 4:14-16
Our temptations shouldn't be a source of shame or guilt--our temptations should drive us to the comfort and protection of God. He has forgiven us.

The Light of the Gospel
1 Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. 2 Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”[ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.
7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.
13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself. 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.
16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. — 2 Corinthians 4 | New International Version (NIV) Holy Bible, New International Version®, NIV® Copyright ©1973, 1978, 1984, 2011 by Biblica, Inc.® All rights reserved worldwide. I know there's a common thing of "christians are christians because they haven't actually read the bible" but I actually grew up being told to read the entire bible once a year once I learned to read. I even had a NIV kids' one with a checklist that had you read a certain amount per day. I only ever read my daily amount when forced to by my youth group or family members that did read the whole thing once per year and even then I usually faked it until they left me alone
#and yes my family did believe the conspiracy that NIV bibles were deleting verses since they knew kids would read it over KJV#and they'd grow up reading said bible without learning all of Jesus's miracles or something#turns out#said verses were not missing but put into footnotes since they might not have actually been in the original writings#a lot of my older family dropped out of school p early#so the bible was one of the few things they could readily get and read#and they knew someone would teach them if they couldn't read a part of it#my grandfather was the first to graduate highschool and he was the 13th child out of 14 who lived#my father was first to graduate from college#my mom was the first to finish medical school#so I got super lucky to have family around me that valued education like that#tho they started to get very extreme after that and pushed me towards more and more academic things until I was ready to yeet myself#so reading the bible had a special place in my family both from the fundamentalist standpoint and from an academic standpoint#they were poor black folk in rural NJ GA and FL so#not much to do but have babies do manual labor and go to church especially back then#for a while my family's churches were even anti-ipad bibles#until they learned they could have the audio playing so the older folks that couldn't read all that well#either from lack of education or declining eye site#n e ways I hope y'all enjoyed my ramblings about intersectionality and bible reading#I did attempt it once but got super uncomfortable reading about sex and stuff like that in middle school#and started having terrible intrusive thoughts so I stopped#I also recognize that it's a Jewish tradition to read the entire Torah once a year I believe#And it resets either during Yom Kippur or Rosh Hashanah#my jewish found fam can correct me on that later#but I get wanting to read your holy book to make sure you know what's up and refresh your knowledge#idk maybe I'll write an undergraduate thesis about how the bible comforts black americans as a concept rather than a religion#ex christian#religious trauma
