So I've had this idea for a Drarry fanfic sitting in the back of my head hitting my brain with a hammer for a few days now and I wanna share. It's like a post-war thing, but also not really? In this AU Harry never dated Ginny. Also in their eighth year Harry and Draco had like a one night hookup??? It's all so messy but it makes sense in my head I swear.
After redoing his eighth year at Hogwarts, Draco marries Astoria (partly to make his mom happy) and whem they're 20 they have Scorpius as a secret, no one but close family/friends know. Astoria dies a few months after having Scorpius and Draco is destroyed, but he has Narcissa, who's helping him raise the kid.
When Scorpius is around 3-4, Lucius (who is in Azkaban) dies and Narcissa couldn't take it, and fell ill out of sadness, dying a few months later. Draco is, again, destroyed. But he has a 4-year-old kid now and he decides to shut down and just focus on Scorpius's pain.
A few days later, he sends a letter to Sirius and Remus (THEY'RE ALIVE AND MARRIED OKAY LET ME HAVE THIS) telling them about Narcissa's death and since Sirius is the only alive family he has, he invites them to the funeral. He also adds that if he wants to, Harry can come too.
Scorpius isn't at the funeral, and without his son's eyes to see him weak, Draco breaks down crying and sobbing. Sirius comforts him and once he calms down he tells him that if he needed anything, he could owl them.
The next month Sirius and Remus tried inviting Draco to dinner or tea multiple times, but he kindly rejects every time. Harry, who's aware about the whole situation, is worried, because he thinks - from his overthinking about everything - that Draco might try killing himself (of course he won't because he has Scorpius BUT NO ONE REALLY KNOWS)
So Harry being Harry, shows up unannounced at Draco's house like "haha hi I was passing by and thought I'd visit" and Draco is panicking inside but lets Harry in. His hair is a mess and the living room is full of toys that Harry doesn't understand why Draco has. Until Scorpius flies into the living room on his kids broom and Harry's like "oh. oh."
Scorpius almost cried because he's the biggest Harry fan in the whole world because of course he is. And so Harry shakes Scorpius's hand and then Draco tells Scorpius to go play, because the adults need to have a conversation. Scorpius nods and hugs Harry before leaving and Harry looks at Draco and Draco is smiling the sweetest and most beautiful smile Harry has seen him smile.
Draco proceeds to explain thay he has a son and everything and Harry seems very understanding of everything. And for the next few months Harry, Sirius and Remus visit Draco and Scorpius and aahwhhhh I don't know they fall in love how adorable.

Hiiiiiii!!!!! How was/is your day?????
I just finished episode 5 pf camp cretaceous s3!!!!
And of new from last time, WE SAW KENJI'S HOME ON THE ISLAND!!!!!!! that place was bonkers!!! And the poor kid must uave had a lonely childhood(I might remind me a lot of chloe from miraculous sooooo I now I want to adopt him and suffucate him eith love and hugs!!!)
Also we saw blue!!!!!! The raptor and it's so funny that we the kids didn't free her, she would have died and we wouldn't have had the next two movies basically!!!!
Also I noticed a thing, ben and kenji never really have been on good terms, but like at the start it was for a reason(ben being always scared amd wanting safe and kenji being a chaotic kid who wants to show off) and then it's a different reason(ben being tarzan and kenji just a kid who wants to go back to normal), and it's kinda sad because I think that while ben was missing, kenji was the one to miss ben more than everyone else (except maybe darius, but he felt more guilty than anything else) and he kept his bag and hand sanitazers, like I think if ben hadn't gone insane he and kenji would be super best friend forever!!!
Also I find so funny how darius is often the group dad but he is the youngest!!!! I also think he has developed something i think is called atlas sindrome/behaviour, that it means taking everything on his shoulders, he thinks it's his responsability to keep them alive, to make them go away from the island ecc, ecc. He also showed some self sacrificing behaviour at the end of last season!!!!
And also the kids are so sad they will never see each others again, but like kenji is like super rich!!!! He can go and meet everyone and pay the travel for everyone to meet somewhere when averyone has time, he can even save sammy's farm!!!!
About sammy, that strange mortal science Project of hell just hit her and she doesn't look very healty now!!!! I really hope that thing doesn't have poison but it has scorpion in its name soooo yeah!!!
Also not me thinking about how all of this wouldn't have happened if only they made an hybrid herbivore, but nooo the t-rex is cooler, fuck them make an hybrid from bumpy, a tricetapos and a brontosaurus(the one with the long neck) and you get a giant tank, with a shield, spears and a hammer!!!!
Please keep talking. You're saying all the right words in all the right ways, If you write about these characters I will eat every word like it was gospel.
Also yeah, they are pretty dumb for doin that. Also also, in case you didn't know (you probably do) the hybrid is based off the scorpion fish, not an actual scorpion. However it's venom supposedly isn't as deadly as the dino's, so there might be a little something else, but it could also be the insane increase in the dosage, but idk. I could ramble about the scorpius but I gotta do stuff rn, I'll get to the rest of your aska asap! Thanks for talking!

Brothers
none of this makes sense, I didnt make a good ending, so .... I’m sorry I wanted to write this, but it wasn't getting any better, so I made these little moments during the years of James and Albus, I hope you like it i'm sorry for not making sense, or for mistakes, I just needed to get it out of my mind
(James and Albus are 2 years apart, so in the fight scene James is 15 and Albus 13 - and it happens in the same year that Lily enters Hogwarts -, and in the final scene, James is 17 and Albus 15)
-----
When James went to Hogwarts, Albus felt alone.
It was strange, because he always had James in the next room, ready to play with him or just piss him off, Albus had a friend at all hours of the day, but then, he went to Hogwarts and he came back talking about friends that he had done it there, and everything incredible that happened there, and Albus was alone and jealous.
He lost James to those stupid friends of his.
When Albus went to Hogwarts, he was angry with James.
At Hogwarts, James was not his older brother, who liked to race with him and loved to talk to him and make jokes. James, in addition to having his own friends, James seemed to be famous, even though he did nothing. People always seemed to sit down and listen to whatever shit he or his friends were talking about, and the worst part is that Albus realized that they loved all that attention.
When Lily entered Hogwarts, Albus wanted to break James' nose.
Albus was seeing a boy. A Ravenclaw boy who didn't want anyone to know about them. But Albus also wanted to keep it a secret, so it was no big deal. However, James was always on the way.
He and Greg agreed to flee to Hogsmeade together, but of course James was close by and saw him running away, and of course he followed. But in the end it was good, because their father was in Hogsmeade and if it weren't for James and the cloak, they would have been caught.
Later, back at Hogwarts, James even had the courage to yell at Albus about him being irresponsible! James! The same boy who got into trouble almost every week.
Albus had been so angry that if it weren't for Mira to intervene to warn that Harry was at school looking for James, Albus would have broken his brother's nose. How could he think he had a right to intervene in what he did? To say what was right and wrong? James liked girls, he had seen his brother kissing some in the halls, he would never have to worry about the things that Albus worried about. He didn't need to be afraid to talk about who he liked with his parents. His father had even talked to James about girls.
James was normal.
When James broke Greg's nose, Albus felt guilty.
James, as always, was out of the castle that night with his friends, he saw when Greg attacked Albus, when he fell like an idiot to the ground, and he went to help him.
James didn't tell anyone about what Greg had called him. He didn't even joke later, when Minerva sent them home for the weekend. James had a bruised eye and cheek, and Albus's jaw was aching like never before, and even when his father yelled at them, James said nothing.
'Who was in Hogsmeade that day?' Harry asked, and for a second Albus thought James was going to tell the truth, but for some reason, he said:
'Me.' And Albus thought he had never seen his brother so embarrassed and looking so sad when his father said he was disappointed in him.
'You lied to me.'
When James defended Albus, he was stupidly moved.
Their father had been injured and had gone to the Hospital, the three were called by their mother, because Harry had asked for them there. He was in terrible shape, half of his face was bandaged, James and Lily cried when they saw their father in that state, Albus however was paralyzed on his mother's side.
James asked Albus to tell their parents that he was gay, sometime soon, saying that no, they would not fight with him or throw him out of the house. Seeing his father like that, looking so fragile and so hurt, Albus wanted to throw up, thinking that he could have died without knowing the truth. James never told him why he had hit Greg.
'I'm gay,' he said, awkwardly, and his parents looked at him as if Albus had said that he had found a diamond mine in his room.
He was afraid, so afraid that he went to James' side, who had come out of his father's embrace. Nobody said anything for a while, and Albus thought it had been a bad idea, he should have been quiet.
'Why are we quiet?' James said, nervous. ‘It isn’t a horrible thing what Albus said, you don't need to be like this.’ He didn’t even seem to be breathing. 'He's still the same Albus, boring and stubborn, as usual, and just because he kisses boys doesn't mean anything. And if you two think this is a big deal, I'm going to disinherit myself, because Daddy was excluded his whole life for being different, and I think the Potter know what it's like to be alone, so I don't see any point in making Albus feel like that.' James put his arm around his shoulders, pulling him close. 'I think Al deserves our support, and he has my full support. I punched Greg in the face for talking shit, and I would do it again, even if it’s someone twice my size.’
Albus blinked his tears away when his mother hugged him, and when his father called him in for a hug. They were not angry, ‘We would never be angry about that, regardless of who you kiss or how you see yourself, we still love you very much.’, And Albus felt a lot more relaxed and free when that weight came off his shoulders.
'Please call us if someone says something to you. You have a very beautiful face to be hurt by punches.’ Ginny said, filling him with kisses, tears falling down her face.
When James told him that he was dating, Albus wanted to laugh.
It was so obvious that he and Mira had been dancing around each other for months, and every time he saw them together, full of little secrets and smiles, Albus knew they would end up dating.
He and Lily even bet when James would tell the news, Lily who won.
'James doesn't know how to keep a secret.' She said, laughing. 'And he seemed very nervous when I saw him and Mira together near the Astronomy Tower.'
When James asked Albus to go out with him and his friends, he felt important.
They went to Piper's house, together.
Albus felt much older that night, along with James' friends, listening to them talking about girls and boys, and playing video games with them. Michael always asked Albus' opinion if he was quiet for a long time.
‘Any boy on your radar, mini Potter?’ Piper asked, handing him the packet of snacks. 'Pretend your boring brother is not here, and tell us about the Slytherins. Hot or not?’
But when they smoked together, Albus felt that they had reached a new level of friendship between siblings.
Usually Scorpion didn't like being around James on vacation, and Albus knew that he hadn't fully overcome his crush on Mira, and it seemed that James knew it too, because he never talked about girls as much as he talked to Scorpion around.
'It's to irritate you,' he said for the thousandth time. 'He never talks about it, but he knows it will piss you off, so he does.'
James was lying on the floor in the living room, smoking a joint and laughing at something Michael had said, something that involved girls. Scorpion grimaced, and Albus thought his friend really didn't understand what it was like to have an older brother.
‘Sloan, you need to learn to talk to girls, or you’ll be forever comparing their hair to that poisonous flower,’ James said, his voice slightly curled from the marijuana.
'I need to learn? Don't be an asshole, Potter, if it weren't for Hazel you would never have started dating,' Piper snapped, taking the cigarette from James' hand and swallowing, green eyes, which were naturally clear, now dark. ‘And Blanca liked my poem.’
'I would never have agreed to go out with you.' Michael was sitting in the armchair, his feet dangling from the arms of the chair while he was leaning on the other arm, devouring the rest of the ice cream that was in the jar.
'Of course you would, you already kissed me, why wouldn't you accept it?' Piper asked, pushing the cigarette to Albus. ‘Do you want to try, mini Potter?’
‘Albus doesn’t smoke,’ James said, staring at his brother with the eagle eyes very much like the ones his mother gave them when they fought.
'Stop it, James. Albus you can smoke, if you want.' Michael smiled at him, blinking. 'If you don't want to, mini Malfoy can try.' Scorpius looked at Albus, seeming to be talking to him mentally.
'I never smoked,' Scorpius said, looking at the other boys in the room, but Piper didn't seem to mind because he kept the cigarette stretched out for both of them.
‘Take it or leave it, if you don’t want it, I won’t offer it again.’
'You two don't have to do this,' James said, now sitting on the floor.
'But what if I want to?' Scorpius asked, looking more cheeky than usual, and Albus almost laughed at the grimace that James made.
'Then smoke. But I am only responsible for my brother.'James raised his hands, facing the two who were sitting on the other side of the sofa. ‘If you fall, I won’t get you up.’ He would, Albus knew that, but James would never admit it.
'Okay.' Scorpius shrugged, taking the cigarette out of Piper's hand and putting it in his mouth, all attention turned to him. ‘Al?’ He looked at Albus, the joint in his hand, the smoke coming out of his lips as his pupils seemed to dilate a little.
'Will you lift me if I fall?' Albus asked, just to annoy James, taking the cigarette between his fingers. His brother laughed, lying on the floor again.
'I always get you up, Al.'

If you ever fancied a show which really took its male lead apart in every way....
I love AHM! First off, to get this out of the way: Rygel and Chiana’s ‘Titanic’ moment cracks me up and I also love the fact that Chiana conclusively earned her was on the ship by helping to birth Moya’s child (The girl seems to be drafted into being a midwife: she helps J&A to give birth later, doesn’t she? Heh). I love that the show can have funny moments even in the middle of grimness.
Which brings me to the parts I really want to talk about: the Gammak base stuff. I love that as soon as Aeryn finds out John has been captured, she gets out of bed, even though she can barely stand, even though she is only walking through pure strength of will, and prepares to go down to rescue John (and I love that D’Argo and Zhaan go with her). This, here, is the key to why J/A is my ultimate ship: they rescue each other. He will risk everything for her, he would die for her, if necessary. But so would she. She repays sacrifice with sacrifice, loyalty with loyalty, and love with love. And oh, John so needs rescuing. I find the condition John is reduced to quite painful to watch, actually. The torture is not only a horrible mental violation, it is physically awful, as well. His utter helplessness and his horror at his helplessness (both in the Chair, where he is literally bound so he can’t even move his head, and in the cell, where he has barely energy to crawl) are supplemented by his terror. Crichton is terrified and he can’t quite hide it. Added to the horror is the sheer objectification he undergoes. To Crais, he was a person. A person to be hunted and killed, but it was personal. To Scorpius, with his dispassionate researcher’s voice, he is less than a bug. And yet, he somehow goes on, but it’s the fact that he is doing it despite what it’s costing him, despite being in severe pain and while scared to death, that makes me love him all the more. And I love that he is protecting Gilina, someone he is not in love with. He undergoes all of this for Gilina. When Scorpius asks him “what could possibly be worth all of this?” the “what” isn’t love but gratitude, because he owes Gilina, for helping him, for helping Aeryn. Could I love John any more? Unlikely. Sheer decency rocks. But he clearly cannot hold on much more. When he is brought back to the cell after his last turn in the chair, even though he earlier thought Stark’s device was useless, he wants to try it now because he cannot face the thought of going to the Chair again. But he shakes and can’t stop and he can’t even crawl, but collapses. And OMG, Stark! I love the moment where Stark, so unexpectedly tender, so sane after all, unties his mask and releases the thought projection thingy. And the thought that Stark still has all that compassion after years in this place is amazing, and I love that you see John try to process not being in pain for a moment because he’d forgotten what it feels like. And I love how through it all, Stark just keeps stroking his hair, the way you would a child’s, and John falls asleep because he is finally relaxed enough and not in pain enough to be able to do so. It actually probably saves them all later, because when Aeryn gets here, he is able to move, even though haltingly (and I like how it’s consistent through the ep, that it’s hard for him to run or even walk). And then…and then! We get one of my favorite moments in all of the show.  Because the door opens and…it’s Aeryn. “This is the radiant Aeryn Sun” tells John to Stark, and all the love and hope and disbelief in his voice and relief, just kill me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because she is alive and she came for him, when he thought he would never ever get out of here, and his first words to her are to find out if she is OK, even though he is a mess himself. He is as grateful for concrete proof of her being OK as he is for being rescued.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course, Aeryn gets a bit of her own back, in the Aeryn-Crais confrontation (I wonder if Crais is a closet S&M freak. He never paid attention to Aeryn before but he sees her as a person after the Chair. I really loathe him i this ep, as he is hitting John who is already being tortured in the Chair and utterly helpless. I think John almost welcomes that because it allows him to focus though.) She finally confronts her personal demon and rejects Peace Keepers and I love that scene. OK, Gilina, you are an idiot. In the middle of a dangerous escape from a super-secret base, while everyone is hunting you, and the guy with you has been tortured within an inch of life and sanity? Is not the time to ask whether the cute guy likes you. You need to go with them anyway, because you’ll be hunted and killed. I love that neither Aeryn nor John can discuss it, partially because WTF!timing, but also because they aren’t prepared for themselves. I love the scene on the roof and yet it makes me sad. Crichton and Stark, shooting everything, reveling in the violence and mayhem, it’s the reaction to the enforced helplessness and degradation of the Chair. Now they can hit back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But that’s the thing. From now on, John will never be parted from his gun, from now on, it’s PK uniform of one sort or another for him. When he says ‘Shoot him, Gilina!’ re: Scorpy, there is a bit of crazed triumph in his voice, delight, no hesitation. I cannot blame him one bit, but I miss the sweet natured John, who has finally been bent out of recognition.
Tumblr media
And we get the tag with Gilina and I bet John will feel tremendous guilt about her death. When he leans in and kisses her gently? Waaaaah. There is so much here, I really must stop somewhere.

Timing ( Draco x Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: Draco ends up marrying Astoria in a arranged marriage, making you give up on love. He thinks he’ll never see you again... Until he learns you’re a professor at Hogwarts.
Rain hit the window as you stared off at the setting sun. Today was quite frankly the hardest of your fucking life. Months of arguing, screaming and crying just to be met with more sadness. Draco had to marry Astoria, there was no way around it. You all stalled it for as long as you possibly could. But it didn't work. Astoria honestly felt terrible about this whole thing. You all went to the same school together, she knew Draco loved you. She knew he wanted to marry you. He wouldn't even look at Astoria during the rehearsal, much less today. The worst part about all of this was you had to find out from a newspaper. Molly saw it and she froze. She knew the letters from Draco just went dead, you didn't know why and the next thing you knew this was happening. You sat in Ginny's room, looking out the window with this numb expression. A knock sounded off at the door and Harry walked in. "Hey..." He said softly. You didn't respond, fiddling with a silver locket Draco gave you in your fourth year. "How are you feeling?" Harry asked. You rested your head on the edge of the wall next to the window. "I'm fine." You said, voice low because your throat hurt from the crying. "Aside from the pain, the anguish, the fact that I have been trying to figure out what I've done wrong to make him stop talking to me just to find out this, the fact that I spent four years planning my life with him, the fact that that should be me, the fact that I can't stop hurting and the fact that it feels like I'm suffocating, I feel fine." You said, yanking off the locket and throwing it across the room. You ran your fingers through your hair.
This went on for MONTHS. No one dared to tell you that your feelings were invalid or tell you that this was overreacting. Because it wasn't. You sacrificed so much, giving and giving, again and again. The Weasleys' watched you tear yourself apart. You slowly went back to your normal self, becoming a professor at Hogwarts and teaching Astronomy. But you nearly snapped again when you found out Astoria was pregnant. You taught, watching new students fill your seats every year. You loved your kids like they were your own. You never minded speaking with them in class on personal matters. They always loved hearing about your life. "Miss Y/n, I have a question?" a student asked. "Yes Dalia?" you asked. "For a report I have to say each faculty member's Patronus. What's yours?" She asked. You stopped writing and turned around with a pained smile that was hard to miss. "I'm afraid I'm unable to produce a Patronus." You admitted. "O-oh. S-sorry!' She apologized. "It's quite alright dear." you said before turning back to your work.
Then it finally happened. Eleven years had passed and you knew exactly what had to happen. You walked down the platform, getting ready to ride in a cart with faculty members when you saw those silver eyes. You almost called Mcgonagall then and there telling her "Can't teach anymore. Sorry." He looked at you, a very sad expression on his face as his son ran onto the train. Luckily Snape noticed this and tapped your shoulder, breaking the stare and making you get on the train. It was so funny to you. Growing up you were so afraid of Snape, terrified of that stone cold glare. Now you worked with him and actually came to see him as a friend. Pain the ass at times, but a friend to you indeed. You sat in a empty cart. "E-excuse me." A voice said. You looked up and saw silver eyes, making you nearly jump out of your skin. "All of the other carts are full... Can I sit in here?" The boy asked. You nodded and he seemed fixated on you while you read. "Can I ask you something?" he asked. "Yes?" You asked. "Are you Y/n L/n?" He asked. ".... Yes I am." You said. "You know my father then." the boy nodded. Oh don't tell me-- "I'm Scorpius Malfoy." He introduced. Oh God. Oh GOD. "Yes... I know who your parents are." You nodded. "Dad is always mentioning how much fun you two had in school together." Scorpius said making you grip your book tightly. "Yes, your father and I were good friends Scorpius." You admitted. You reached into your pocket, gripping a pager. It was a new thing amongst the teachers. Two clicks for help. One for possible assistance needed. You clicked it once. "You're in a lot of yearbook photos too with him." Scorpius added. You gripped the device "Is it true you two dated?" Scorpius asked, you clicking the button twice. "I-I" you halted. "U-uhm--" Finally the door slid open, Snape seeing you on the verge of screaming. He sighed and sat down. "Thank you." You whispered. "Do not call me again." He spat out.
Scorpius wouldn't stop with these questions in the year though. He'd stay behind in class and ask you until he HAD to leave. You didn't hate the boy, no. You actually adored him. Scorpius had a bright mind, always curious and bright eyed, almost reminding you of yourself. Maybe that's why you answered his questions. Maybe that's why you allowed him to sit in your room during lunch and talk to you. "Is it true your best friend was a seeker in his first year?" Scorpius asked. How much did Draco tell this kid? "Yep. Damn good one too." You chuckled. Scorpius ate a bag of chips and you finally had a question for the curious boy. "Scorpius. Why have you never mentioned your mother?" You asked. Scorpius rose a brow. "You didn't hear? Dad divorced a few years ago, mum left." Scorpius said. You nearly knocked over your ink vial and your jaw almost dropped. "They're divorced!?" You asked. "Yeah. Like... Four years ago. Made sense, neither of them seemed remotely interested in each other. Honestly I don't know how I even exist as their kid." Scorpius admitted. The next few classes that day were hard to get through. Draco was of course on your mind, of fucking course. "Miss Y/n? I asked a question?" a student said "Hmm? Yes?" You cleared your throat. "Where is the Orion's belt again?" They asked.
You absolutely dreaded the week even more as time passed. But by far the worst day was when Scorpius got into a fight and you of course were the teacher that had to sit down and talk to his father. Snape watched you go from professional to a professional wreck in two minutes. "Pull yourself together woman. You act like this is your first time interacting with another human." Severus snapped. "I haven't seen Draco in almost twelve years Severus, I am losing my mind here!" You groaned. "He's here." Severus noticed through the window. "What!? No no no I'm not prepared--" "If you can deal with those god forsaken son's of Fred and George you can deal with this." He snapped before leaving. You were so not prepared for any of this-- oh God the door is opening.
There he was, blonde hair still in that silver tint, those eyes looking at you wide. "Y/n--" "Please sit." You motioned to the chair in front of your desk. He nodded, sitting down and you sat, tapping your finger on your desk. "SOooo" Christ woman, could you be any more awkward!? "Scorpius got into a fight Tuesday, its been resolved, nice to have you here, grab a stale doughnut on the way out." you said quickly. "Uhm... Y/n, we have to talk about why he did it, which I'm not quite clear on. Actually I'm not even sure what happened, Scorpius is usually so kind." Draco said. God damn it. You ran a hand over your face and sighed. "Scorpius punched another kid in Slytherin. Apparently the other student insulted Rose and he just sucker punched him." You explained. "Ah. See that sounds more like him." Draco nodded. "I vouched for him. This won't appear on a record for school." You assured. "Why was I called here?" Draco asked. "Honestly? I have no clue, the situation worked itself out." you shrugged. Draco was looking at you and you gulped. "How have you been?" Draco asked. You opened your mouth but your pager went off three times. Another fight. "Oh no." you sighed, getting up and cracking your knuckles. Draco rose a brow as you left. A few minutes later three students were dragged in... Including Scorpius. "Dad!?" Scorpius asked. "What the hell did you do now!?" Draco asked. "Same reasoning as before. Honestly it's Henry Goyle, I can't say I'm surprised." You groaned. "I'm so sorry Miss Y/n!" Rose said. "Wait, why were you brought in?" You asked. "I punched Goyle, not Scorpius." She said making your eyes go wide. "I'm here because I kind of... Encouraged it?" Scorpius admitted. "Christ." Draco sighed. "I didn't know you were here!" Scorpius said. "That is not making your case any better Scorpius!" Draco said. "Goyle, go to Mcgonagall, Rose I'll contact your parents, Scorpius. SIT." You finally said. The kids all scurried and Scorpius sat next to Draco. "What in the hell happened this time kid?" You asked. Draco rose a brow. "Well Goyle insulted Rose again. I wanted to punch him but all I saw was Rose scream 'that's it' and then she punched him." Scorpius said. You blinked a few times. "And you encouraged her?" You asked. "I mean... I say it was justified." Draco muttered. "You would know. He got that from you." You muttered making Scorpius smirk. But then he saw his dad do something very rare. He genuinely smiled. You felt your cheeks heat up. Scorpius was dismissed, again leaving you and Draco alone. "You can go if you want, the meeting is over." You breathed, smacking your head on your desk. "Y/n..." Draco said. Why did he have to say your name? Why? "Hmm?" you asked. "You do realize I'm going to work here next fall right?" He asked. Your eyes widened. "What?" You asked. "I'm a healer. I'm working with Pomfrey." Draco said. "Sooooooo. What I'm hearing is: You're now going to be dealing with Harry's son!" You said. Draco laughed. God you missed that. He got up, a small ping of disappointment arriving. "Hopefully no more visits will be required. But I definitely think we should catch up sometime." Draco said. You chuckled. "My next break isn't until the school year ends." You sighed. "Then we will see each other at the start." Draco said. You watched him leave and you let out a long sigh. "God damn it!" you groaned.
Sure enough, that next school year, Draco was on the train in a cart with you. Just you. You were pretending to read but you couldn't focus. Not with Draco being there. Looking at you. "Scorpius said something interesting to me a few months ago, mind answering this?" Draco asked. "Hmm?" You asked. "He told me you couldn't produce a Patronus." Draco said. ".... That's true I lost the ability to do that after..." You cleared your throat and looked at your book when it registered with Draco what you were getting at. "So... You never married?" Draco asked. You cleared your throat, tempted to page for Snape. "I didn't." You said. "Any reason as to why?" Draco asked. "Because I gave up on it." You snapped. Draco blinked a few times as you sank back into your seat and lifted up your book.
You for the most part were able to avoid Draco. At least then you wouldn't have to answer his questions. Well that planned backfired after you got injured from a wonderful little prank went wrong, leading to you having a burn on your arm. You came in and Draco rose a brow, noticing you holding your arm. "What happened here?" He asked before seeing the burn. It was bad. Like bad bad. "I am going to kill Goyle for having a son." You groaned. Draco grabbed bandages and then an ointment. "Alright, don't scream." he said. "Wow, did we suddenly go back into a broom closet in our fourth year?" You asked making Draco nearly drop the bottle and blush crimson. "glad to see that still works." you thought to yourself. Draco shook it off and he stuck out his arm. "Hold on." he said. "why?" You asked. "You'll need something to hold onto, we're out of stress balls." Draco said. You gripped his arm... Was he always this muscular-- "OW MOTHER--" You gripped his arm and winced. "You've got three more drops of this." Draco warned. "Distract me! Please, for the love of god." You whined. "Uhhhh-- Astoria and I divorced." Draco said as the next drop was poured. You gripped his arm again. "S-Scorpius told me-- Fuck that burns!" you groaned. "She left me for Blaise, weirdly enough." Draco said. He poured the next drop. "Not a smart woman-- OW-- What the hell is this stuff!?" You asked. "ointment, makes the wound heal faster." Draco said, disregarding the comment on Astoria. "Last one." Draco said. "Just do it dude." You whined. "I have to add something else to this one, it will hurt worse." He warned, turning around to grab something. "I thought the purpose of a medic was to take away pain not add to it!" You groaned. He turned back around, again, extending his arm. You gripped it. "any particular reason you brought up your divorce?" You asked. "Didn't know if you knew." he answered, looking at your burn mark for something. "Why should I know if you're divorced or not?" You asked. "I don't know Y/n, why do I know that you gave up on love?" Draco asked you. "... Touche." You said. He dropped the last bit and you gripped his arm, panting as you did. "Christ- Tell me that's over!" you winced. "It is. But you're going to have to stay here a couple of days. You cannot use your arm. I need you hear because what ever burned you is reacting to something and I need to make sure it doesn't get worse." Draco said to you. "Sure you're not doing this to be near me?" You asked jokingly. He chuckled. "That may be one of the many factors." He admitted making your face burn up.
Well it wasn't as fun as that made it sound. Something in that little prank went wrong and it caused you to wake up with the wound infecting. "Draco- Ow ow ow!" You whined. You were now sweating from the pain. "Y/n focus on me! Okay? This is going to hurt." He warned. "Just shut up and do something because it HURTS!" You groaned. He used something on it making you grip his arm. You panted, sweat dripping off of you as he cleaned the wound and wrapped it. "Are you okay?" He asked. You closed your eyes, smacking your head on your pillow and sighing. "If I kill Goyle will you help me?" You asked. He chuckled, sitting next to your bed in a chair. "I'll bring the shovel." He nodded making you grin.
You finally fell asleep, Draco looking at your wound but mostly him watching you. You were in his life again. Thank. God. When Astoria left him a part of Draco wanted to go out and find you himself. Then he messaged the Weasleys', asking FINALLY "Is she okay!? Someone tell me she's okay and well" Harry was the one that told him everything. You not seeing anything, you giving up, the damage that was caused by him leaving and you having to fix it, the crisis you went through when Astoria was pregnant, seeing him last year. Draco didn't want your efforts to be in vain. So he didn't say anything. But God damn it was so hard when you were around.
You had a slow recovery, most days involved Draco seeing you read. Your students were always walking in, asking about you. You always told them not to worry and that everything would be normal soon. You were so gentle with them. But by far his favorite thing to see was you interact with Scorpius. You clearly were close, you cracking jokes with the boy. He would smile and laugh, talking with you. Draco hated his marriage to Astoria. But Scorpius was the one good thing that came from it and he wouldn't trade him for the world. Scorpius was noticing strange moments between you and Draco, seeing his father legitimately smile on a regular basis. You were also smiling now, the burning hatred for the world seeming to fade. You seemed happier and everyone was beginning to notice. But you were very happy when you could FINALLY teach again. Your students were excited but Draco would have to come to you and check your wounds, giving you medications for it.
You looked up and smiled seeing him walk in. "That time again?" You asked. "Yep. Are you sure we should do this in front of students though? You tend to swear." Draco asked. "Like that's stopped her before!" A student said making you roll your eyes. "I don't--" "The fairy incident." Another student said. "....Touche you little shit." You said making the class laugh. Draco shook his head with a smile and unwrapped your arm. You kept teaching though even as he was poking around the wound. "Can anyone tell me where the sagittarius constellation is?" You asked before feeling Draco apply the ointment. "It's--" "Give me just one moment Gavin-- OW!" You breathed. "Focus on your students it's almost over." Draco told you. "Answer now-- Mother f--" you gripped Draco's hand earning a few students to watch. His hand was calloused but still soft... "it's... It's RA 19h 0m 0s | Dec -25° 0′ 0″.. ma'am..." The boy answered noticing you and Draco. "Th-thank you! Why don't we add a fun little challenge of NOT MAKING ME CONTEMPLATE MURDER!?" you said gripping his hand again. Draco was almost having a hard time focusing with you holding his hand... It was so much smaller than his, it was honestly cute. Scorpius smirked to himself. "Hey, dad distract her with something before she actually chokes you." Scorpius said earning looks from other people. "Did you just call him DAD!?" someone asked. "He's Draco Malfoy dipshit, yes he called his father dad." Another student said. "Y/n you're beginning to cut off circulation." Draco said trying to ignore the students. "So wait, Draco is Scorpius' dad, is Y/n his wife or something--" "NO!" both of you said in unison earning the class to watch you two. "Really? You seem close, especially in the old year books." A student said. "Why were you looking at yearbooks?" Another student asked. "School project. Y/n and Mister Malfoy are in it and they seem really close." A student said. "My dad said they used to date." Rose said making you shoot daggers at the girl. "Wait you two used to date!?" Someone else asked. Draco gave you a "Should we tell them?" Look. "Yes! We did, but that was a long time ago!" You said as Draco finally finished, allowing you to breathe. "I swear to God this doesn't get any easier!" You groaned. "You nearly breaking my hand doesn't help either." Draco teased and you shook your head. You sighed. "So.... Mister Malfoy is your ex... Who's divorced... And single?" A student asked, suggesting you do something. "Don't you even go there kid!" You snapped earning a look from Draco. "It was a long time ago, we're just friends." Draco said calmly. "Are you sure about that?" Scorpius asked making Draco frown. "Yes. I'm sure." Draco said. Still Scorpius continued. "With how much you talk about her, are you sure that's the case?" Scorpius asked earning the whole class's attention. You facepalmed and groaned. "I do not--" "After my parent teacher conference you wouldn't stop asking about her-- you wrote to the Weasleys dad-- you don't like the Weasleys!" Scorpius said earning you to look at him. "Scorpius. Stop." Draco demanded. "I'm not just going to stop okay! Mom's gone! She left, she made it clear! An opportunity is at your damn door-- TAKE IT!" Scorpius said making Draco let out a long sigh. "I am going to kill my son." Draco sighed. "It is not that easy." You said to him. "Both of you are single and near each other, how is this not easy--" "Because the damage has been done Scorpius." You said earning looks from everyone. You sighed. "Class dismissed." You sighed, this exhausted look on your face. "We have--" "CLASS. DISMISSED." you snapped. Your students left, leaving you alone with Draco.
"Your work is done why are you still here?" You asked. "I'm sorry I never told you." Draco said. You shook your head. "about what Draco?" You asked, this pained expression that honest to God broke this man's heart as you looked at him. "About Astoria... Father wanted me to cease contact with you after Astoria’s father agreed to the marriage." He explained. "I don't need to hear this Draco." You said, gripping the pager. "I should've told you, smoke signaled, God-- something." Draco said. "Just stop! Okay!" You begged. "Draco what happened, happened. The damage is done, I'm okay now-- Stop bringing this up!" You begged. "Y/n... I didn't want to leave you--" "Please." You whimpered. He saw those eyes, those painfully broken eyes. You were emotionally exhausted. "I'm sorry... I'll leave you be." He apologized. He walked to the door. "If I could change everything, I would." He said before leaving. You were left in an empty classroom, throwing everything off your desk and burying your face in your hands. Damn it. Damn it damn it damn it.
You ended up asking Mcgonagall for the week off, practically begging her. Considering you didn't even leave the school for holidays she allowed it. Draco was frustrated, Fred ending up being the substitute teacher. The students were concerned about all of this. You never took off. Ever. So why now? A week passed and you finally returned, a depressed state being clear. Everyone felt really sad looking at you. You looked so exhausted, you wouldn't even look in the same direction as the Medical wing. Scorpius felt guilty, knowing exactly what the cause of this was. You seemed to loathe having Draco in your classroom, making any talk of your love life off limits. Today was different though. Draco resorted to giving you a pain medication after a while so you wouldn't have to use the ointment. He walked in with a glass of water and a glass of the medication. "I have a question... It's personal." A student said. "Love life is off limits Claire." You said. "It's not about that, it's about a club you were in?" She asked. "Hmm?" You asked, drinking the disgusting medication. "Were you in chorus?" She asked. You nearly coughed it up and Draco was having a hard time not smiling. "Y-Yes I was." You muttered. "So you can sing?!" Another student asked. "Yes." Draco nodded. Everyone was giggling at this. "Were you in it Mister Draco?" A student asked. "Well--" "He wasn't." You coughed. "Ah. So he can't sing?" Scorpius asked. Draco gave him a "Really?" look. "No I never said that. I said he wasn't in chorus." You said before drinking the glass of water. "He plays piano though." You coughed out earning a smile from him. "And guitar." You added making him freeze. "Oh God. Oh God no." Draco winced. "If I could be anywhere" you hummed making him facepalm. "Make it stop." He groaned. "OH MY GOD YOU WROTE THAT SONG!?" Scorpius asked. Draco smacked his head onto your board and groaned against the wall. "I've been wondering why Rose hums that damn song! She said Fred taught it to her!" Scorpius said earning a snort from you. "I am going to kill Fred!" Draco groaned. "ROSE! SING IT WITH ME!" You shouted. "NO!"
"IF I HAD A PLANE, THEN WHERE WOULD I FLY TO!?" Rose said standing up and making the class erupt into laughter. "IF I HAD TO USE MY BRAIN FOR SOMETHING ELSE, TELL ME WHAT WOULD I DO?" You sang, wheezing through the lyrics as Draco was repeatedly smacking his head on the wall. "AND IF I HAD A STRANGE CONVERSATION WITH A LADY IN A WAITING ROOM ABOUT LEAVING ALL THIS DOOM AND GLOOM!" Scorpius screamed making his father practically die inside. The class was watching this disaster in front of them, laughing the entire time as you sang the lyrics off key. Draco watched you with a smile as you laughed. "Serenade us won't you?" You teased. He let out a long sigh, walking towards the door. "If I could be anywhere, I'd be there with you." He sang making you laugh and the class practically scream.
"TAKE MY CHANCES, FAKE MY GLANCES, WAKE THOSE ANSWERS ANYWHERE BUT" All of you sang laughing the entire time. You all were laughing so hard you couldn't finish the damn song and Draco shook his head. "I cannot believe you still remember that song." He said. "Fred sings it in the shop HORRIBLY all the time when you're brought up. He calls you guitar boy." You snorted making Draco shake his head. "who was the song for?" A student asked. Both of you froze and you coughed. "Off limits!" You coughed out, providing the students with a obvious answer in the response. "I wonder if we can introduce it to the chorus teacher--" "NO!" Draco said.  "PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO IT!" you laughed. "Alright you-- I have plenty of embarrassing stories on you!" Draco said. "Psh. These kids already know my life story." You said, highfiving a kid. "Oh? So they know about the hair dye incident?" Draco asked. Your face dropped and he laughed. "Knew it." He said. "What's the hair dye incident!?" Scorpius asked. "I was quite the meddlesome child growing up. I would occasionally prank people and I decided to prank Y/n one day." Draco said. "Oh God no." You groaned. "So I swapped out her shampoo with hair dye. She had blue hair for a week." Draco said. "that doesn't sound so bad." A student said. "It gets worse." You whined. "she decided to get revenge and for a week and a half my hair was green." Draco said. "Well, we got crafty with each other and it seemed like with each new week one of us had a new hair color... And then I switched shampoos." Draco said. You groaned. "I accidentally dyed Snape's hair neon red." You said making the class nearly piss themselves. "it wasn't that bad." Draco said. "Not that bad-- Draco he looked like a raggedy Ann doll for two weeks!" You said making the class die of laughter. "Did you two get into trouble a lot?" Scorpius asked. "Welllllllll" you said. "Not exactly." Draco said. "Not for pranking necessarily." You coughed. "Oh my God." Rose snorted, catching your drift. "Wha-- OHHHHHH." Scorpius gasped making both of you glare at him. "...You two have been caught shagging!?" A kid asked making you nearly scream and Draco choke on air. "HAVE A NICE DAY GUYS!" you said dismissing the class. You laughed and shook your head. "I cannot believe you still remember that song." Draco said. You chuckled. "You wrote it for me... Was it good? Meh. Not bad for a fourth year. But of course I remember it." You said finally. Draco smiled. "Our conversation... Last time... I'm sorry if I hurt you." He said. You sighed and looked up. "...It still hurts Draco. To hear about this. But I can't change the past." You said softly. "I can't ignore it either, your son is in my class." You shrugged. Draco swallowed and walked back to your desk, picking up the glasses. ".... I miss you." Draco said softly making you halt. "Draco..." You swallowed hard and turned back to him. He was closer, this exhausted look resting on his face. "Draco I...." You let out a long shaking breath. "When you weren't here I almost went insane... I didn't realize how much I missed you until you were gone-- Y/n I don't want to leave you, not again." He said. Your next set of students started shuffling in and you cut your attention away.
You never addressed that conversation, afraid that you'd say the wrong thing. Your burn on your arm was thankfully nearly healed. Draco walked in. "Today's the day." He said. "Last sip of this disgusting shit! Wooh!" You said making the students laugh. "And the last time I'll have to change the bandages." He chuckled. You downed the last glass and coughed. "God that is horrible, it's like doing shots at Fleur's wedding all over again." You coughed making Draco snort. "ooohhh Miss Y/n, you drank?" A student teased. "I deal with your asses all day, yes I drink." You said making the class laugh. "I drink to forget--" "But I always remember." You and Draco said, making each other laugh. Scorpius sighed. He just wanted to see his two favorite people happy. This was the last week of school, something had to be done. Draco switched the bandages and you turned back to the chalk board once he was finished, writing something down. Panic set in watching his dad leave and Scorpius stood up making a noise as his chair scooted back. You turned around. "....Scorpius if you start quoting 'The Dead poets society' I'm leaving..." you said. "Dad loves you." Scorpius said making you nearly drop the chalk and Draco frowned. "Scorpius what in God's name are you doing!?" Draco asked. "I can't take it anymore! You haven't stopped talking about each other, I know you love her so would ONE OF YOU JUST SAY SOMETHING!?" Scorpius said. You swallowed hard and looked at Draco. "You're not correcting him?" You asked. "He's not lying." Draco answered making the entire class hold their breath. "I can't do this." You breathed. "Y/n I've already told you my opinions." He said. "Your emotions are running high, you've got to be delusional--" "Y/n." "or something because I can't just pretend like almost thirteen years haven't passed and--" "Y/n." Draco said, walking forward. "I can't keep waiting on you to answer Draco! I can't keep waiting for you to just show up and make things better because you can't!" You said as Draco stood in front of you. "Do you really think this will work, after all of these years, that we can make this work, that we can help each other heal and that I'll just cry in your arms and let you love me!?" You asked. "You don't have to cry." Draco said, holding your cheek. "Oh yes I do." You whimpered before Draco finally kissed you making everyone lose their shit. "FINALLY!" Scorpius breathed, sitting back down. He pulled away, looking in your eyes, brushing away the tears. "I'm not going anywhere Y/n." He whispered, looking in your eyes. You sniffed a couple of times and Draco did something you never thought would happen. He pulled out a ring. "OH. MY. GOD." Rose gasped. "Draco--" "Y/n, will you do the honor--" "Have you actually lost your mind?" "of being my wife--" "You've finally lost it haven't you!?" "because you're already my soulmate?" He asked. You let out shaking breaths. "Did you just walk around with that thing in your pocket!?" You asked. "I brought it with me when I found out I was going to be working with you." He said making a few students coo. You let out a long breath. "You're insane." You breathed. "If I remember correctly, you said you liked crazy." Draco reminded. You cracked a smile through the tears and you nodded. "Yes you fumbling idiot!" You said. "YES! HOLY SHIT THIS TOOK WAY TOO LONG!" Scorpius said making you laugh as you hugged Draco.
You two got married that summer, Scorpius being happy and taking FULL credit for being the reason you two were now together. Molly was SOBBING the entire time at the wedding, watching you two finally be together after all of these years. Even Snape had a hard time hiding a smile as you were with Draco. You two ended up having another child, Artemis Wisteria Malfoy. Scorpius adored his little sister too, loving you as his mother. You were so much happier in the class room, smiling every day. You finally answered the burning question of that the hell your Patronus was, proving even further that you were happier.
Draco leaned against a doorway watching you read to Scorpius and Artemis, a beautiful smile on your face as you did. You laughed at one of the lines in the book, making Scorpius and Artemis laugh in the process. You finally noticed Draco and smiled, him sitting next to you as he picked up your hand and kissed it, watching you laugh and smile. This was love. This was pure incandescent love and he wouldn't trade this for anything.

Tumblr media
Your fourth year at Hogwarts was filled with twists and turns and surprises that not even you could really fathom. The biggest surprise was finally accepting your own feelings for the Slytherin boy, Draco Malfoy. But with him comes years of family trauma and sadness, the stigma of a bully, and a love that you never knew you needed or thought you deserved. Draco loves you like none other. He’s your anchor. You’re his. You grow together in a way that you never thought possible.
“Forever,” he whispers in your ear every night as he kisses your forehead.
Fifth year comes and although it’s filled with darkness and gloom, Draco is your beacon of light. You run to him when the days get bad, when the nights get long or when you just need a reason to smile. Draco shields you from the bad, holds you all night long. There’s plenty of nights where you sneak together to his dormitory from the Common Room, limbs and lips tangled together like you wouldn’t wake up tomorrow.
“Forever,” he whispers in your ear as he holds you close to him.
Sixth year comes and Draco stands in front of you, his eyes full of unshed tears and sorrowful gazes. He holds your hands in his and you know what’s coming next no matter how hard you try and banish the thought. You shake your head, begging him not to say the words.
“It’s over, Y/N,” he whispers, his jawline hardening. “You aren’t safe with me anymore. I can’t protect you anymore. This is goodbye.”
The tears roll down your cheeks and your voice is caught in your throat. Your heart is in your stomach and the world feels like it’s slipping through your fingertips.
“You said forever,” you whisper now, watching the tears fall from his eyes as he stares at you, drinking you in like it would be the last.
“Forever,” he swallows. He turns on his heels, leaving you alone in the corridor.
You sink to your knees, the first sob of the breakup escaping your throat. You clutch your chest, hoping you could hold your own heart together. There would never be enough magic in the world to cure the feeling of heartbreak.
~
The days pass in a blur. They pass so fast you barely notice the change in the air, the added evils the wizarding world seems to be dealing with daily. You don’t notice the way Draco looks a little paler than usual. Or the way his black suits almost hang from his slender body. And you definitely don’t notice the emptiness of his eyes, or the way he looks at you longingly from across the Potions classroom. Or maybe you do notice. Maybe you notice everything, and that’s the problem.
Draco makes sure you don’t notice the winding snake now crawling up his left forearm and he makes sure you don’t notice the way his world seemed colorless now, or how he breaks down in the boy’s dormitory more often than not. No, he would never let you see him like this. Not because of his pride, or because he’d seem weak. No, he wouldn’t let you see him like this because he knows you’re stronger than he is. You always have been, and you always will be. You would throw yourself into it without hesitation, and then how would he keep you safe?
~
Damn him, damn Voldemort, damn Harry Potter. You can’t even really function anymore. Everyone is on high alert, waiting for Voldemort to attack, but you’re on high alert, waiting for the exact moment that Draco will break. You know it’s coming. You see it in his posture. In the way he holds himself a little bit stiffer, his chin a little bit higher. His tone is clipped and he walks past Weasley without making one comment. Something is off.
But no, you can’t follow him. You can’t check on him because forever doesn’t exist for you two anymore. Because forever was a lie and everything was a lie except for your love for him. Your love for him was bigger than this was. It was bigger than Voldemort. It was bigger than his need to protect you, so you will wait. You will count the seconds, the minutes, the hours, the days until you can hold him in your arms and whisper the words that made everything okay
“Forever,” you whisper to yourself. Because you’d love Draco Malfoy forever, no matter the cost.
~
Spells and curses fly by your head, and you know that this war is going to get uglier before it can get prettier. The patter of your feet echo off the walls of the crumbling castle as you run through the empty corridors, your eyes scanning the battling wizards outside for your boy.
The air reeks of rot and smoke and inhaling takes more out of you than you could ever fathom. Your eyes are scanning faster than your brain can register, the only sound comes from your heavy, panicked breaths. You had to find him. You were going to find him, if that’s the last thing you do.
~
Draco dodges curses and hexes, spells and even some punches as he runs through the corridor, his breathing labored and heavy as he searches for you. The fighting has almost halted completely, but you weren’t there. You weren’t standing there amongst the students, cheering as Harry Potter defeated Voldemort. You weren’t there, so where are you?
Draco enters the Great Hall, his eyes wide as he scans the bodies of the fallen Hogwarts students. He looks for your features- for your cute little nose, that hair he loves so much, for those lips he kissed so often, but he can’t find them, because you aren’t there.
No, you aren’t there, but you run towards the Great Hall, hoping, praying to Merlin that you wouldn’t see your boy laying among the fallen. You enter, scanning the floor, scanning the sobbing families, looking for Narcissa, or Lucius, or even Draco himself, but you don’t see him, because he isn’t there.
No, he isn’t there, but the minute you turn to run and search more of the castle, your eyes lock onto grey ones and you suddenly feel alive again. Relief, happiness, joy, everything all at once. Your knees buckle as you take him in. He’s alive. He’s safe. He’s a little dirty, but he’s breathing and he’s here and he’s walking towards you and you’re running. You run into his arms, flinging yourself around him as you sob loudly.
Draco catches you, holding you so tightly he was worried you wouldn’t be able to breathe, but you’ve never breathed better. He sinks to his knees, his fingers in your hair as he holds you. Because you’re alive and you’re here and you’re seemingly unharmed and everything feels okay because you’re here.
“I love you so much,” he mutters against your skin, refusing to ever let go of you again. “I’m so sorry, I’m so so sorry.”
“I know,” you say urgently, taking his face in your hands. “I know everything, I love you, too.”
Your words are rushed and your voice is cracked, but you had to tell him, show him, how much you love him.
“I’ll never leave you again,” he says, trailing his thumbs hurriedly over your cheeks. “I swear it.”
“Marry me,” you say. Your eyes stay locked on his as the realization of what you’ve just asked hits him. “I want to be with you forever.”
“Yes,” he whispers, wiping more hair from your forehead. “Forever.”
~
You stand in the living room of an empty home, your eyes searching everything from the colors to the molding around the windows.
“Do you like it?” Draco asks, a small smile on his face. You can’t help but smile, because you really do love it.
“I do,” you say, your hands moving protectively over your swollen belly.
The house was more than beautiful- it was perfect. It was larger than a cottage, but not big enough to be a mansion. It was the perfect size for your growing family. The diamond ring on your finger glitters in the sunlight spewing in from the window, and little Scorpius bounces in your belly happily.
Four bedrooms, a master bathroom and closet, two stories, your dream kitchen, a family living room, and a large dining room. Draco had outdone himself. You love the pastel colors of the walls and the plush carpet throughout the home. It will be the perfect place to raise a family.
“Do you really like it?” Draco’s voice is small, almost child-like as he watches you in awe.
“I do, my love. I love it. It’s perfect,” you grin.
~
“Scorpius!” You call from the attached deck of your perfect little home. “Dinner!”
Draco bounds in first, twirling Scorpius behind him as they run inside. Scorpius is the first to run to you, kissing your cheek before taking his place at the table
“Hello, darling,” Draco smiles. He pecks your cheek once, then your lips. He leans down to your belly, swollen once again. “Hello to you, too, darling.”
“We still need to choose a name,” you laugh, running your fingers through your sweaty husband’s hair. “She doesn’t have a name yet.”
“I’m sure we can come up with one,” Draco shrugs, wrapping his arms around you. “Go on, I’ll take care of the plates.”
You smile, watching your husband grab plates from the cabinet. How did you end up so lucky? A beautiful life, with a beautiful husband, a beautiful baby boy, and soon, a beautiful baby girl.
~
You kiss Scorpius’ forehead as you tuck him in that night. You turn the lights off and amble to your room, your feet aching and your little girl kicking.
Draco is already in bed, his eyes scanning a work document. He turns down your side of the bed and pats the spot.
“Come here, love. Come relax,” he smiles.
You clamber into bed, snuggling up as close as your belly would allow.
“Would you still love me if I were this large all the time?” You laugh, running a hand across your belly.
“I will always love you no matter what,” Draco smiles, kissing your forehead. “Forever.”
And forever he did.

The Set Up. Draco Malfoy x Reader
Tumblr media
Request by @marvelrose - ok so like, many years after the battle of Hogwarts, after the death of Astoria, Draco was raising Scorpius alone. he never thought of making a girlfriend or marrying someone after her death, but when Scorpius grew up, he started to understand how lonely his father was and he really needed a motherly love. so he planned on setting his father a date with the reader who happened to be a teacher at Hogwarts. ps. draco and reader were in different houses and never really interacted with each other. sorry if it’s too long. I had this idea for a long time and I really love your writing soo
I really love getting requests so please keep them coming! I do have a few in my to-do list at the moment but I usually get round to them in two or so days! I just want to say thank you to each and every person who follows me, likes content, reads content, reblogs content, messages me… basically, anything you do I love you for it!
ALSO SIDE NOTE I DO NOT KNOW EXACT DATES OF WHEN SCORPIUS WAS BORN OR WHEN ASTORIA DIED OKAY? SO BECAUSE OF THAT THERE IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE A FEW INACCURACIES SO FOR THIS FIC PLEASE JUST IMAGINE SCORPIUS WAS LIKE I DUNNO 3 WHEN HIS MOTHER DIED EVEN IF HE WASN’T OKAY? THANKS!!!!!
When he was younger Scorpius hadn’t really understood the effect his mother's death had had on his father. He understood the basic emotion of sadness but it wasn’t until he was older he realised that that sadness was filled with much more.
First, he noticed the denial, the way his father ignored the loss in his life, trying his best to carry on as if nothing had happened. From the denial, he could see the anger that hid in the sadness. This anger was at everything. He was angry at himself for being the one who lived, angry that she had left him on his own, angry at his son for reminding him every day of the wife he had lost. As he got just a bit older he saw how this sadness twisted and distorted into ugly forms of depression that loomed over his father every day.
While all of that was hidden in his dad’s emotion, there was something else that Scorpius noticed, something that surrounded all of these feelings, engulfing Draco’s heart every day. It was the same feeling Scorpius felt in the absence of a mother figure in his life.
It was loneliness. Draco had lost a part of him when his wife had died, much as Scorpius had but it was different. Scorpius was young, and while that loss would always be in his heart he had his whole life ahead of him, people that could help fill the loneliness would enter his life and help him through it all.
Draco didn’t have that luxury. He was at an age where you didn’t tend to start making new friends, he didn’t have many to start with either. When Draco’s wife passed, that was it, he was left with only his son around him.
In this time of loneliness, Draco had decided to put all of his efforts into his son, making sure that he had everything he needed, trying his best to provide both a father and mother role for him. He had neglected himself, his own needs, focusing all he had into making sure Scorpius was okay, and in doing this he had unconsciously decided that he would never find love again and would never look for it again.
Which is what brings us to now. Scorpius and Draco were spending a nice afternoon together shopping and chatting as they wandered through Diagon Alley. It was the summer break so the streets were busier than usual, meaning that as they walked every now and then they walked into someone.
“Oh Sorry,” Scorpius said as he knocked into someone as they passed Gringotts. Spinning around he noticed a familiar face smiling back.
“It’s quite alright Mr Malfoy, its a bit busy today.”
“Professor Y/L/N, it's weird seeing you outside of school,” Scorpius laughed. “Er Professor this is my dad. Dad, this is my herbology teacher,” Y/N stuck out her hand for her student's father to shake.
Draco noticed that she looked slightly familiar. While he couldn’t quite place where he knew her from, he couldn’t help but notice the sweetness in her smile, or the way the sun hitting her eyes caused a little sparkle.
“Draco right?”
“Er yeah…”
“I was in your year at Hogwarts, I wasn’t in your house so I wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t remember me,” she smiled.
“Oh no, I do remember. Y/L/N. Y/N right? You used to spend a lot of time with Longbottom in the herbology rooms?” He asked, his hand still shaking hers. It was only when she pulled away from that he realised he hadnt let go.
“Yeah that was me, always had a fascination with plants and their abilities,” she had a soft voice one that Draco was pleased to hear. It was comforting to him, hearing someone talk so gently as though she was singing a lullaby to a baby.
Scorpius saw something in his father as he talked to his teacher, something he hadn’t seen before. Suddenly a light shone through the darkness that clouded him, a flash of something new… was it hope?
“Well it was lovely seeing you Mr Malfoy, and nice to properly meet you Draco,” she was about to leave when Scorpius noticed that little light in his father beginning to fade again. Quickly he blurted out,
“Why don’t you come for a drink with me and my father? Unless you have somewhere else to be, but I’m sure Dad would love to hear more about what Hogwarts is like now, especially seeing as you were both there at the same time,” Draco wasn’t quite sure what to make of his son's sudden interest in their conversation but he had to say he didn’t mind. It was a nice change for him to chat to someone that wasn’t his son.
“Em yes, you should join us,” Draco smiled. Y/N looked a little confused, but smiled and nodded none the less. She enjoyed talking to the pair, it wasn’t something she would usually do by it was nice to be invited somewhere by people that weren’t fellow teachers.
They all went and sat in a small pub, surprisingly quiet in comparison to the bustling roads outside. Draco brought everyone a drink and the group sat down and continued the talk they had been having before outside.
Scorpius was surprised by how easily his father talked to the woman. Usually, his dad would shy away in conversations, find ways to leave them but when he spoke to the herbology teacher in front of him he seemed more at ease than he had in a long time. It was nice to see a genuine smile grace his father's lips for a change.
Draco had to admit, this was the first time in a long time he felt genuinely happy about talking to someone, the first time he had felt that that warmth in his chest, or the butterflies in his stomach since his wife had passed.
Scorpius saw this sparkle of joy in his dad's eyes and decided to give them some time alone.
“Hey, I just saw one of my friends from school go past, you don’t mind if I go and talk to them do you Dad?” He grinned. Nobody had walked past, well nobody who he knew anyway, but this was the first time he had seen his father show interest in anyone and wanted to see if something else would come of it. Draco wasn’t aware of what his son was planning so simply nodded, watching as his young boy ran out the door, his eyes following him as he dashed past the window and out of view.
“You have a very polite son Draco,” Y/N smiled. Draco turned back to face the woman on the other side of the table. Her smile was captivating, it made his heart feel full of light and joy. “He’s very bright too.”
“He gets that from his mother. I never really was one of the smart ones,” Draco chuckled, sipping at the drink in his hands.
“Well nobody was smart in comparison to Hermonine, that girl was incredibly intelligent.”
“Yes, that's true. So what's it like at Hogwarts these days?”
“Well, it was built back pretty similar to how it was when we were there,” she said, a hint of sadness in her tone. “Some places aren’t quite the same as they used to be, all my best hidding places seemed to have disappeared, like the one by the Hufflepuff common room, or the one at the end of the potions corridor, behind the p-”
“The painting of that guy on a horse?” Draco asked.
“Yeah, he always used to moan when I’d sit there but he’d never give up my hiding spot to anyone which was nice. You knew of that spot too?”
“Yeah, I used it in the older years. The man in the painting used to complain that I made his frame all greasy,” they both laughed at how even though they didn’t really know each other back then, they seemed to share a similar experience when they were there. “I hear McGonagall is still there, what is she likes these days?”
“Surprisingly chilled out, still terrifies me though. She was the only teacher I was actually scared of when I was there, everyone else I’d happily mess about but she use to terrify me. I think it was the stern look that she always had on her face.”
They continued to talk, happily remembering moments from when they were at Hogwarts, suprised by how much they had in common in those days. Both of them were so engrossed by each other that they failed to see as Scorpius, still on his own, as he crept past the window every now and then, checking in on them. He was pleased when he saw them both smiling and laughing with each other. It wasn’t until the sun began to set, and shops began to close their doors that Scorpius decided to return to his father.
“Hi Dad. Professor,” he smiled, sliding into the chair beside his dad. “Sorry I was gone a while, we went into some shops for a bit.”
“That's alright, we were just talking about what Hogwarts was like when we were there,” Draco said turning to face his son. When their eyes met, Scorpius could see how the sadness that usually sat in his dad's eyes had faded, replaced by something far happier. “Well it's getting darker now, I suppose we should really get going.”
“Yes, me too,” Y/N smiled. Both she and Draco felt a small sadness as they walked out of the pub. Both of them had enjoyed each others company rather a lot. Draco was about to wish her goodnight when his son, the menacing child that he was, chimed in once more.
“Why don’t you join us for dinner some time? We never have anyone over, Dad’s great at cooking as long as its basic food but it tastes great, I’d love to hear about Hogwarts from when Dad was there.” A sly grin was on his face.
Just as Y/N was about to protest, she couldn’t possibly inconvenience them like that when Draco noticed the sly grin on his sons face. He knew what was going on, and while usually, he would have nothing to do with romantic schemes he had to admit to himself that maybe his son was right about this one.
“He’s right,” Draco smiled. “It would be lovely to have someone else around for dinner, and I’m sure you have lots to tell him about what it used to be like, and you can tell me all the mischief he’s gotten himself into this year.” Y/N smiled, causing the butterflies in Draco's stomach to erupt once again. She nodded, so Draco gave her address and arranged for her to come round in a couple of days time. He gently placed a kiss on her cheek before she left, wishing her goodnight as he watched her walk away.
“I know what you’re doing Scorpius,” Draco stated, turning to walk the other way with his son. Scorpius gathered his dad would work it out, so simply replied with a cheeky,
“I’m sure I have no idea what you’re talking about father,” a massive grin plastered on his face as they made their way home.
Draco had not been looking for love, he hadn’t thought it would ever find him again, but just because he wasn’t looking for it does not mean it was not found on that day.

Cursed Child Year Four Part 1 Recap
I thought I’d do a mini recap of year fours first part 1. Disclaimer, this is just my opinion, my interpretations could be wrong, these notes are just what I thought when watching it. I know I missed things, as it’s hard to pick up on everything watching them for the first time. I also don’t think you can get a real feel for how things are going to be for the entire year based on their first show.
With that in mind I really enjoyed the show. Cast change can make the show feel fresh and new again, although this wasn’t quite as obvious this year as it was last year, as only a few of the main actors have changed this year.
I only really made notes about any changes I spotted, or my thoughts on the new actors. Although I noticed the existing cast did change things up slightly in some scenes, it wasn’t my main focus, and I didn’t make any notes for them. I’ll probably notice those things more once I’m no longer looking out for the changes generally.
Act 1
There are changes right from the opening scene. Mark stays on stage after putting on the sorting hat and directs the rest of the ensemble as they move the cases. I’d need to watch it a few more times to get the choreography, but it’s more magical, with people moving in slow motion etc as the hat directs them. It’s also a longer scene now, I think.
I liked this, although a friend of mine pointed out that the old version made it feel like muggle Kings Cross, until they go through the barrier, whereas this version has magic happening in the station instantly. I get that, although I like that there’s magic on stage now right from the first scene.
Dominic as Albus in the first scene is like a jittery, excited child, who’s in awe of everything around him. Rayxia as Rose is great. I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed watching her Rose. Michelle has a nice chemistry with Ron and Rayxia, her Hermione is really relaxed when she’s with her family and friends.
Lily’s line is different here. She mentions them always being late. Also Tom now reacts like Paul did on Broadway, when Harry says Snape was one of the bravest men he ever knew.
Albus meeting Scorpius was cute, they don’t have Sam and Theo levels of instant chemistry, but I like them together. Dominic singing the sweets line back to him was adorably awkward.
Dominic changes through the montage scenes, slowly getting beaten down by the bullying and how he blames everything that’s gone wrong in his life on Harry. Dominic smiles a lot, except when he’s with Harry. Like he genuinely thinks Harry is the reason he doesn’t fit in and is being bullied. But even then, the excited kid from the first scene still comes through in the odd moment, he’s genuinely happy he manages to cast incendio.
The Karl track is the track from Broadway, so Karl gets his chest signed by Harry, and the Karl actor is the carer in St Oswald’s. Craig as Karl was so star struck getting Harry’s signature on his stomach that he looked like he was going to faint, it was amazing.
The rose from Broadway is here, and it’s as awkward as I thought it would be.
Emma as Polly looks stunning in that wig, her Polly is gorgeous, and she knows it. She’s the pretty popular girl who will obviously pick on the geeky Albus and Scorpius. Luke as Yann gives me rich, pure blood, posh boy vibes, and I’m here for it. I missed watching Craig as I was watching these two, I need to get a feel for him in Part 2. The problem with a first show, when I’m trying to focus on so many new things and new characters, is that I know I missed loads.
I actually really like the new wand dance. I don’t know why people don’t like it. It’s not actually that different, some different choreography, they all gather around him when Albus gets his wand stuck in the floor, (no more Ravenclaw baby, weird the things you miss) and they line up at the front of the stage at the end like they’re all demonstrating the spell at the front of the class. It works as they all manage to do it expect Albus. New line, even his wand wants to be in Gryffindor.
Madeleine as Delphi. I don’t know what to say other than she’s perfect. She has really got the feel for imitating someone Albus would want to be friends with in their first meeting. She’s not super confident, and gives Albus the impression that she is just like him. You can see why Albus would want to help her.
She got her wand out as she said I’m a thief, it’s a clear attempt at a joke, and it worked with her manipulative Delphi convincing Albus she’s like him. She also didn’t do anything when Amos kept calling her, like the other Delphi’s have. It was more like she was showing Albus she also had a relative who didn’t understand her and she was resigned to it. I basically loved every moment she was on stage and am excited/nervous for Act 3 today.
I really enjoyed the blanket scene. I’ve seen Albus actors do the start of this scene in two ways. Albus is either shut off from his entire family, or just has a problem with his dad. Dominic does it the second way, he interacts with his mum, James and Lily in a positive way and doesn’t seem to have major issues with any of them. His Albus issues are all with Harry.
Dominic really doesn’t want the blanket, he doesn’t understand why his dad has given him this gift he can do nothing with and just wants his dad to leave him alone. His body language at the start is really showing how he just wants his dad to go away. When he does take the blanket, he holds it and delivers his lines like he thinks if he can just get through the conversation his dad will go away.
They both get really angry, a lot angrier than Jamie and Joe in this scene. It felt like Albus letting out his frustrations at how Harry is to blame for his life being terrible. He’s goof at trying the get a reaction from Harry. After Harry says he wishes Albus wasn’t his son, Dominic sort of looked like, of course you think that, obviously his dad was just confirming to him what he already knew.
Side thought, Dominic as Albus and Ryan as James. I got the impression from this first show that James isn’t very nice to Albus, but that Albus still looks up to him and wants his approval. Like there’s a rivalry there, but in a different way to how Dylan’s James was such a dick older brother, it’s less intense.
On the train, I liked how it looked like Albus really did just consider his plan in that moment when talking to Rose. I also don’t know if I imagined this, but when Scorpius said Rose smelled like bread on the train, it looked like Dominic sniffed the air and gave Scorpius a look like, wtf are you talking about. I hope I didn’t imagine this.
Dominic didn’t sit down while Scorpius was talking on the train. He stayed standing and looked like he was just waiting for Scorpius to shut up so he could hug him. I’ve always seen that hug as spontaneous, but this was cute. Also, when the train went to move, and they lean over, Jon basically ended up on top of Dominic, I’m always here for these random Scorbus moments.
I need time to learn all the new characters in the EGM, but I could see some anti Draco stuff going on.
So, St Oswald’s. Weirdly, I didn’t hate it. I mean I didn’t like it either, but I was expecting to hate it as much as I did when I saw this version on Broadway. I didn’t, so that’s a bonus. There’s a lot going on now though, looking at one trick means I missed another one. I would need to see it again to get a full picture. Maybe when I’ve seen it a few times I’ll get used to it, or maybe I’ll hate it again.
This is nothing to do with the actors or the tricks btw. It’s the change from the stressed out carer trying to keep order while being harassed by the residents, to this arsehole carer using magic on the residents. I know they get revenge, but still, I don’t like it.
Michelle and Susie giving each other knowing looks during the dinner scene whenever Tom was speaking is something I didn’t know I wanted until now. When Tom was saying he makes an ooof noise, Michelle nodded at Susie, and when he was talking about his Skiving Snackboxes, she reacted. It really made it feel like old friends chatting and it was great.
Polyjuice scene, Madeleine is very good, this is a theme. She’s surprisingly calm at first, until the pain hits. Michelle struggled to get into the cloak, Jon helped. They’ll get it with practice.
Act 2
There are three Voldemort arms at once in the opening scene now for some reason. Kathryn’s Petunia is great, I knew that from Broadway. They’ve given little Harry new trousers that show he’s wet himself and I don’t know how I feel about that.
Madeleine, again I love how she matches Dominic’s awkwardness, but still being more confident and someone he would look up to. She didn’t even look at Scorpius as she threw the robe at him. Although she’s not playing them off against each other as much as I’ve seen with other Delphi’s. Her kiss with Albus really fit with her Delphi, Dominic smiling loads. She then she did air kisses at Scorpius as she left. I never would have thought that would work, but it did and it was brilliant.
The Hogwarts scene, Albus really resents his dad, the moment Scorpius mentioned Harry, his body language changed. Although he liked Scorpius saying he was better than his dad. He also doesn’t agree with Scorpius when he said he still gets a tingle, Dominic’s Albus gets no joy from Hogwarts and it’s sad, this boy hates his life.
It’s weird watching the first task without James, Josh or Rosemary etc, but I can see the new cast already having fun with it. The faint is still there, but it’s now Ravenclaw girl.
Dominic ate the chocolate in the hospital scene. Dominic and Jamie work well together, Albus seems convinced he can refuse his dad at first. Genuine confusion in the scene with Ron
Dominic did something I loved in this scene on the stairs when Scorpius turned up. He kept looking down at Harry during the conversation with Scorpius, like he was waiting for Harry to change his mind or checking he was saying what Harry wanted him to.
Michelle in the DADA scene, I like her stern Hermione in the AU. I haven’t got a complete feel for her Hermione in Act 1 yet, I probably need to see it again, but I enjoyed watching her here.
Longing looks in the staircase ballet.
Delphi and Scorpius, oh Madeleine is so good. Again she really finds that way of connecting to Scorpius, of being the type of person he would obviously open up to. She hadn’t really done as much to antagonise him before this, so it makes sense she’d be able to connect with Scorpius here.
With Eve, when she said she hadn’t been to Hogwarts, it came across that saying this was a slip up on her part, which she then had to cover for. But with Madeleine, Delphi saying that might have still been a mistake, but it came across more like she knew it would get Scorpius’s sympathy and make him trust her. Also, that little look she gave as she was being wheeled off stage, like thank god that worked, this is really frustrating. Not obvious enough to give anything away, but a nice touch for her actual motivations.
A general observation, I really get the Scorpius always following Albus and doing whatever he suggests from these two, more than any other Scorbus pairing. Of course Jon’s Scorpius is jumping off the train after Albus, and breaking into the ministry to get a time turner.
Dominic’s Albus is kind of bossy with Jon’s Scorpius and its clear Scorpius just accepts that. I saw this in a few moments, like when they’re talking to Amos and Jon says “do we?” Dominic was just like, sssh Scorpius, and Scorpius just shuts up. Scorpius is used to following his friend around and doing what he suggests, even if he knows it’s a bad idea.
This makes the library scene argument really work with these two. Dominic’s reactions were great, this is clearly the first time Scorpius has ever shouted at him, or called him out for his BS, and he doesn’t know what to do with that. It’s genuinely like it’s the first time he’s thought about any of it, and it makes him realise he’s been an awful friend.
Dominic’s Albus really gets across that he’s only doing any of this because of Harry, he’s panicked that McGonagall will catch them and his dad really will force Scorpius away from him forever, there’s real desperation in the way he’s trying to convince Scorpius to hide with him.
I loved the way McGonagall leaves the library, she’s assumed they want to spend time together and sort of announces it to them, like - I didn’t see you, I’m leaving, carry on boys. It was perfect. She isn’t putting any more effort into to keeping them apart, and has let them know this.
There’s also an extra psstt moment when they’re hiding from McGonagall, and I would need to see this again to work out if it’s just the same recording being repeated or a new one.
Dominic made the story of stealing James cloak into a bad joke to try and break the tension. The joke doesn’t work, obviously, but I like how he doesn’t know how to approach Scorpius after their fight and tries humour. He also seemed genuinely distressed that his dad had been keeping them apart.
The library hug was the most adorably awkward thing ever. I don’t know if people have noticed, but there’s a slight height difference between the Scorbus actors this year. This meant that Jon’s arms were sort of hanging awkwardly over Dominic in the hug.
Blythe as McGonagall is good. She’s a lot softer than Sandy, and I’m looking forward to seeing her change in Part 2 when she’s telling them all off. There are little things she does differently, I can’t remember them all. When she put away the map, she made it seem like it was the spell closing the map and not her just folding it up.
Lucy as Myrtle is great. If I’m honest, I was expecting to just miss April in this scene, but I really like Lucy. She’s still flirty and hilarious, but totally doing her own thing. The second time she cries, she sets the water off three times, Scorpius tries to interrupt her after the second time and she stops him so she can cry again. She also makes it seem like she’s intending to keep the boys secret, and that it’s only because it’s Harry asking her that she then tells them what they’re planning.
Kathryn’s Umbridge is also great, again I knew that from Broadway. I like how she’s just sweet on the surface but you can see the evil underneath. Her laugh is spot on.
One note about this cast, they are so noisy backstage. I was in the third row, but I still only usually hear the occasional noise. This was more than usual.
I’m sure I’ve forgotten loads, but I tried to focus mainly on the new actors and the changes. I enjoyed the show and can’t wait for Part 2 tonight.

I didn't feel like writing an entire story, as I'm already doing that for NaNoWriMo. However, I did want to give you a case of the feels as I'm currently having a lot of them and it wouldn't be fair if I didn't share. So, if you will, read this. Then come yell at me.
- It took Hermione Granger a good three years before she dared lay eyes on Narcissa Malfoy after the war. Harry had invited her several times, but she just couldn't do it. There was too much anger, hurt and sadness. When she finally does accept Harry's invite, it's to join them for tea at Malfoy manor.
- It's weird to see a little one-year old boy running around, with bright blonde hair, being chased by a woman who single-handedly ended the war by telling a simple lie. Or perhaps it was the most complicated lie of all. The lie of a mother protecting a child who wasn't hers. A mother who would do anything to safe her own son. Lies. Narcissa Malfoy was surrounded by lies. But little Scorpius didn't know that and as she watched Narcissa scoop him up in the air, she hoped he never would.
- The word is still carved in her arm. It's nothing like Harry's scar, other than it being a constant reminder that there are still people out there who view her as lesser than others. A minority in a world full of powerful wizards. She doesn't believe it, has worked to accept that she is a bright witch. Still. The scar is there, in all its anger and sometimes she lets the anger consume her until Harry hugs her back to the light.
- Narcissa tries. She tries with kind words, gentle touches on her shoulder as she comes back to the manor once a month. She tries by extending a hand and Hermione feels like a traitor when she accepts it. Narcissa's slender fingers trace over the scar and she shakes her head. "I'm so sorry, Miss Granger," falls from her lips and Hermione can't stop the tear that slides down her cheek.
- Tea gatherings turn into dinners. Angry words are exchanged at the table and when Draco pulls her aside and gives her a piece of his mind, she bursts into tears and goes home. He is right, of course he is, but things are more complicated than that. She feels hurt and curls up in bed for three days straight. Narcissa is never far from her mind and she doesn't understand why.
- Narcissa has a beautiful smile. It radiates with kindness and sometimes - when her features turn dark - she can understand why no one dares speak up to the woman. Narcissa is a powerhouse. A mother. A grandmother. Family means the world to her, and Hermione's heart hurts when she thinks of her parents who are still in Australia, unaware they have a daughter who wants nothing but to bring them home. It would be selfish, though. So, her parents stay in Australia and Hermione tries not to think about them.
- It's not hard to see how Draco was just as much a pawn in the war as they were. Draco is kind, a good husband and a good father. They share similar interests and when she laughs at one of his jokes, she catches the surprised look on Narcissa's face. It's important for Hermione that Narcissa knows she is not trying to steal Draco away from his wife, so she befriends Astoria too. It isn't hard.
- Scorpius is sitting on her lap, as if she's family, as if she's an aunt he loves. His tiny hand grabs at her curls and she tickles him until he begs her to stop because his tummy hurts too much. He rests his head on her shoulder and she wonders if this is what it feels like to be a mother. She wants to protect Scorpius from all harm, hopes he never has to fight in a war like she had to and if he does, that he'll be on the right side of it.
- Lucius remains to be someone who she doesn't like. He scoffs every time he comes across her. Whispers words when no one else is around and she can't for a second phantom why on earth Narcissa remains his wife. She deserves so much better than him. That revelation hits her like a truck and the next time she makes eye contact with Narcissa, she blushed furiously.
- Narcissa is in her dreams. Narcissa isn't wearing any clothes and neither is she. Her touch brings gasps to Hermione and when she wakes up, it takes all her willpower not to bring herself to an orgasm while fantasizing about Narcissa.
- They hug now. When she enters the manor, Narcissa's arms engulf her and there's nothing but warmth that wraps around her. It feels nice. Safe. She never wants it to end. But it does, and it makes her sad. Still, when it's time to leave she gets another hug and she tries not to inhale the scent of Narcissa. She fails.
- She has a major crush on Narcissa. That much is obvious. Narcissa is blissfully unaware and perhaps it's for the best. Narcissa talks a million miles an hour and Hermione soaks up every word, stores them in her brain and replays the words late at night when she hugs her pillow tight to her.
- Narcissa's hands are in Hermione's hair. Playing, tugging gently. Sweet words are whispered into her ear and it's getting harder to distinguish dreams from reality.
- Harry is either the biggest idiot in the world or he knows something she doesn't want him to know when he sets her up with a friend of him. They go on a date. It ends horribly with her knee in his crotch. She cries because she doesn't know what's wrong with her. As soon as she's home, settled on the couch with a cup of tea in her hands, there's a soft knock on her door. When she opens it, Narcissa stands there with a worried look on her face. That night Hermione sleeps in her arms, completely platonically and for now, it's all Hermione needs.
- Hermione invites Narcissa to movies in the muggle word. It's both hilarious and a little sad that Narcissa has missed out on all the muggle technology. She shows her all the classics, and as the months pass, Hermione's crush grows into full blown love. She doesn't even dare to tell Narcissa. How could someone as gorgeous as Narcissa ever fall in love with a simple mudblood?
- It gets harder not to tell Narcissa. There are some self-esteem issues. Narcissa watches it from a distance until she can no longer take it. She grabs Hermione by the hand, pulls up her sleeve and tells her that the word edged into her skin does not define her. How beautiful she is, how smart she is, what a kind heart she has and how one day someone will love her for all those qualities and that her blood status should never be in the equation. She soothes all of Hermione's fears until in a moment of pure adoration, Hermione presses her lips against Narcissa.
- Narcissa lets her down gently. Accepts the apology easily. Tells her it's okay. But that she loves her husband and won't abandon him. That she loves Hermione, but she isn't in love with her. She gives Hermione hugs and strokes her hair until Hermione falls asleep on the couch. She covers her up with a blanket and quietly slips out of the house.
- Later in the evening when Hermione lays in bed and cries until she no longer can, she thinks that love really is the cruelest mistress of all. That night her dreams are filled with loving touches, whispered words and forehead kisses. When she wakes, despite being alone, wonders whether any of it was real, there are suspicious marks all over her body. She can't tell dreams from reality. But for one night, she felt utterly loved and perhaps... that's enough.

Things I love about: Tom Peters as Harry Potter
One of my favourite things is seeing understudies perform. There’s nothing I love more than seeing new, unique interpretations of characters I know and love and seeing what new things I may learn about them in the process. I wanted to put into words some of the things I’ve loved most about cast 3’s first cover Harry, Tom Peters.
-        He is so different to Jamie Ballard. His Harry is much more emotionally reserved, all of his trauma has been internalised. He is stoic, practical, purposeful, always on the move, always doing. I’ve affectionately nicknamed him “Power Stance Potter” due to the way he flicks back his robes and stands, hands on hips, ready for action.
-         On platform 9 ¾, he doesn’t quite know how to show his affection, the goodbye with Albus is awkward, showing right from the word go that there is a distance between them that doesn’t exist between Harry with James or Lily. I’ve seen them end up awkwardly waving to each other or settling on a handshake because a hug is a bridge too far.
-         Despite being much more reserved, he still has a goofy side which becomes much more apparent around Ron and Hermione. After tidying the papers on his desk, he throws his wand in the air and catches it, showboating. He seems so much comfortable and natural around them which is yet another contrast to him with Albus.
-         In the blanket scene he is so sincere and earnest that it almost hurts. He’s genuinely trying to reach out to his son. Being more reserved, moments of strong emotion pack a real punch. The line about wishing Albus weren’t his son bursts out of him, sudden and intense, like a dam bursting and it made me flinch every single time I saw it.
-         He is my favourite polyjuiced Scorpius that I have seen. Power Stance Potter is gone and replaced by a giddy, awkward Scorpius. He stands awkwardly, knees turned in, his arms flail, he is full of pure, geeky delight when he sees all the books on the shelves. He is funny and endearing and I absolutely adored him.
-         During the scene with polyjuiced Albus blocking Hermione’s office, Tom’s Harry watches on in complete bewilderment. He is stood stock still, unusual for a Harry who is usually always on the move and when he leaves the stage, he moves so slowly, eyes fixed on Ron as if he’s seen him in an entire new light and can’t quite believe what he’s just witnessed.
-         In the hospital wing, he is once again so sincere, genuinely trying to understand why Albus ran away. He still has his funny moments – when giving Albus the chocolate, he immediately snatches it back to help himself – but the focus of the scene is his need to understand. When Harry becomes fixated on Scorpius as the dark cloud you can see his desperation; blaming Scorpius gives him something tangible, something he can try to ‘fix’, so he latches onto that idea. Tom’s Harry is all about doing and he needs something practical that he can change or work on to try and fix their relationship.
-         The duel is hilarious, Tom’s Harry really enjoys himself. He loves finally having an excuse to jinx Draco. He brandishes his wand so dramatically and I love that touch of flair when he’s usually so reserved; this is Harry in his element. When he runs to throw the chair at Draco, he abandons magical means entirely and puts his wand between his teeth to free up his hands. Seeing him freeze on the spot, wand between his teeth as Ginny catches them duelling is such a funny moment.
-         The scene in Harry’s office with Dumbledore’s portrait is another scene with a huge emotional impact. When he yells “Years!” at Dumbledore, he hits the table, hard. It made me flinch every time to see that sudden burst of anger, to see the usually stoic Harry suddenly lose control of his emotions. Then, telling Dumbledore that he loved him too is a beautiful moment of vulnerability.
-         My favourite scene of Tom’s is without a doubt the ruined blanket/something written scene. It’s nothing short of exceptional. The pain in his voice when he asks, “how many people have to die for the boy who lived?” is quiet but raw and intense, the internalised trauma resurfacing. When he realises the blanket is ruined, he is so distraught that he can’t even bring himself to look at it. Once they realise that Albus has left them a message, his despair becomes pure unadulterated glee. Finally, there is something he can do. His energy in that scene is so infectious and fills you with excitement, you can’t wait to go on this next adventure with him.
-         The graveyard scene at the end is always a favourite, even though I am also sad that it’s nearly over. I sound like a broken record at this point, but Tom’s Harry is just so sincere and earnest in his approach to Albus. He’s trying so hard and it clearly means so much to him that their relationship improves. Seeing him open up to Albus and show his vulnerability, like he does with Ginny, Ron and Hermione is such a beautiful thing. His Harry goes on such a journey, by the end of the play he has learned and grown so much and that leaves me feeling so full of hope.
-         His Harry still doesn’t quite know how to be affectionate. He seems hesitant, like he doesn’t want to overstep and ruin the progress they have made. This leaves Albus free to lead the way and watching Albus initiate their hug cuts such a contrast to their awkward wave or handshake on Platform 9 ¾ at the start of the play. It feels like the story has come full circle and it is truly so satisfying, poignant and hopeful.
I am so grateful to have seen him play Harry four times and to have been there to support him for his last scheduled show as Harry. That show was so special, and I will treasure my memories of that day forever. (Though if the amount I cried that day is anything to go by, I am so not ready for cast change!)

A Very Albus Recap (London, 2nd and 21st/22nd March)
I just want to throw out a little Joe Idris-Roberts recap, because he’s been on fire the last couple of times I’ve seen him (Saturday 2nd March and Thursday 21st/Friday 22nd March), and his brilliance deserves all the recognition in the world. Here are just a couple of the new things he’s started doing that I’ve been really excited by.
Blanket scene
There are a couple of things in this one. Firstly, at the beginning of the scene Albus lies down on the bed curled up on his side, with his back to the door. It’s clear that he wants to find his own peaceful bit of space, but he still seems happy enough to interact with his family. When James comes in he lifts his head and looks back to make exasperated eye contact with Ginny, and when Lily comes in he looks round at her and shakes his head to tell her that he hasn’t seen her book.
As loud and chaotic as his family are, and as out of place among them as he feels, it’s nice to see him existing among them and being himself. He doesn’t have a problem with them being in his room at all really, right up until the point when Harry comes in. That’s when Albus stops relaxing, sits up, and shuffles right up to press himself against the end of his bed, making himself as small as he can.
Secondly, towards the end of the scene, Albus does the unthinkable – he disrespects the blanket. In a lot of portrayals, even Albus acknowledges that the blanket is a sacred object and takes care of it. There was one memorable performance in which Tom Mackley threw the blanket at Jamie Parker so hard that Jamie didn’t manage to catch it and it fell on the floor. The look on Albus’s face was so full of horror that he clearly understood the magnitude of what he’d accidentally done. But with Joe’s Albus, after a point he doesn’t seem to care anymore. It’s just a mouldy blanket after all.
In the last performance I saw, once Harry got up off the bed and started talking about packing, Albus swung round to take up the whole space, which meant that he stretched his legs out down the length of the bed and right over the top of the blanket. He was essentially sitting on it, and Harry was absolutely livid. If he’d wanted to rile his dad up, he went about it in exactly the right way.
Hogwarts through the trees
I’ve never seen this before, but in the performance on Thursday night, Albus somehow managed to enter this scene backwards. Normally the boys walk from the back of the stage into position facing forwards, so they see the view open up ahead of them, but in this one it seemed as though Albus was trying to avoid looking. He didn’t see the view until he was right in position beneath the arch, and then he turned round and his reaction was so sudden and so real. It was a burst of every emotion under the sun, hitting him all in that one moment.
Joe’s expression in this scene is so profoundly beautiful. It’s everything and nothing all at once. Albus is overwhelmed by what he’s seeing, and he understands how stunning it is, and what it means to Scorpius, but his own relationship to the school is so complex that there’s heartbreak in there too. He wishes Hogwarts could be so uncomplicatedly beautiful to him as it is to Scorpius, but it’s not, and that really hurts. There are tears in his eyes, and he looks so small and sad and inadequate, but of course to Scorpius he’s anything but inadequate, even if he doesn’t realise it yet. Joe is a master of saying a thousand different things with one simple, restrained expression.
Staircase ballet
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone do anything that revolutionary character-wise in this scene, so it was actually a surprise to see Joe suddenly do something so different. He’s mentioned before that there are times he’s found the show’s blocking quite restrictive, and I wonder if now the directors’ attention is elsewhere he’s finally getting to show us the things he’s never been allowed to do before.
He’s always got to the top of the first staircase and acted like he’s found an unexpected dead end, that’s nothing new (although I love how Albus’s path through the school is constantly blocked and thwarted, while the staircases take Scorpius wherever he wants to go – there’s a beautiful metaphor for their relationships with Hogwarts there). What was new was the moment when he ducks through the space beneath where Scorpius is sitting.
Albus normally moves straight through that space and on up the stairs, but in this one he stayed under there and hid. He peeked out a couple of times to see if Scorpius was gone, clearly trying to avoid him, and when he realised that Scorpius wasn’t moving he sprinted straight up the stairs, like he was running away.
It was all perfectly timed to the music still, and it was so interesting to see the choreography used to tell a new element of the story. Joe’s Albus’s story has always been that he’s trying to avoid and hide from Scorpius, he won’t even look at him, but this was a new extent. A new layer.
Library scene
There are two things to mention in this scene too. The first actually relates heavily to something in another scene. In the Act Four scene in Harry’s office, when Draco says ‘if its takes centuries, we must find our sons’, James has started grabbing the Time-Turner and getting ready to go, finger on the dial, about to search all of time for his son before Harry stops him. And in this scene, that was exactly what Albus tried to do too.
The second he said ‘you’ve still got the Time-Turner, right?’ and grabbed it out of the bag, he went running across the room with it, finger on the dial, ready to go and get Cedric and Rose back. It changed the wrestling from being about pure ownership of the Time-Turner to being about Scorpius trying to stop Albus from doing something stupid there and then.
The second thing also requires a bit of background explanation. I’ve been furiously trying to figure out Joe’s library and torture scenes for the longest time, and it turns out that once you’ve understood one, you’ve understood them both. He explained to me at stage door that his Albus is a strategist. He doesn’t get scared, he just thinks – he suppresses his emotions in favour of coming up with a plan. So when you see him shutting down and not responding in the moment to Scorpius’s speech or to Delphi’s torture, it’s because Albus is five steps ahead and choosing to delay his emotions for another time.
More on the torture scene later, but in the library scene he shuts down the second he sees Polly leaving the room. Of course he’s listening to what Scorpius is saying, he’s taking it on board, but he’s aware that McGonagall is going to show up at any second and there’s no time to get emotional. He can’t fix Scorpius’s problems there and then; the top priority is to stop them getting separated again, and that’s exactly what he does. Only when they emerge from under the cloak does Albus finally respond, and what a response.
In the last show it was actually the beginning of Albus’s apology that was most fascinating. He separated the thoughts about the cloak into two separate instances, so it became both a commentary on his relationship with James and a guilty admission of his own problems. The first part, from ‘Yes I stole this from James’ to ‘his trunk combination is the date he got his first broom’ was joking, mocking his brother, and it finished with a ‘how thick can you get?’ sort of ‘duh’. Then there was a long pause before the second part: ‘I found the cloak made avoiding bullies easier’, which was said so quietly, reluctantly almost, like he didn’t want to admit that he’d had to hide. Maybe he was embarrassed to talk about his life being rubbish after everything Scorpius just said...
Torture scene
I discovered a couple of weeks ago that there’s one line that unlocks Joe’s delivery of the torture scene: ‘The flaw in the Time-Turner, the five minute rule, we do everything we can to run down the cloak’. In that performance it wasn’t a desperate half-baked suggestion being flung out, it was a strategy that Albus had been thinking through since he realised what Delphi was going to do, and he was counting on it to work.
Everything that comes before that – Scorpius being tortured, Craig’s death, Delphi’s jeering – is all something that Albus can’t bring himself to engage with, because he’s focusing on the goal, which is for him and Scorpius to survive the preamble, get Delphi into the maze, and then lead her a merry dance for five minutes so they get timed out and she can’t use that task to save Cedric. Once again he’s five steps ahead. He has to be. That’s how he’s going to survive this hell, and more importantly it’s how Scorpius is going to survive it.
It isn’t until the moment when Delphi out-manoeuvres him and smashes the Time-Turner that he’s out of control. That’s when the emotion finally kicks in, when suddenly he has no plan at all, his dad is suddenly in horrible danger, and he and Scorpius are lost.
I’ve found over the last year that if Joe’s not delivering what you expect emotionally from Albus in a situation, there is always, 100% of the time, a really good reason for that. The tricky thing is finding it, but when you do? It’s the most rewarding and exhilarating thing in the world.
Harry and Ginny find the blanket message
This may be strange to say, but this has truly become one of my favourite scenes in the show with this cast (this and the hospital wing scene have both been unexpectedly gorgeous this year).
The reason I adore this scene so much is because it’s such a clear assertion from Albus of how he feels about his dad. It’s the moment when Albus decides that he’s going to reach out and repair their relationship, come hell or high water.
‘We’re starting with Dad’ is the most stunning line. It would be so easy, as Scorpius suggests, to write Harry’s name on the blanket, but Albus is absolutely determined that it’s going to be Dad. Because Harry is his dad, his dad who he loves and misses and wants so desperately. It’s Albus offering the first hand of peace across time and space, from Godric’s Hollow in 1981 to his own bedroom in 2020. There’s something so powerful about that.
The other powerful little gesture in this scene is in a similar vein. Whenever Joe’s Albus sits on a bed, he flips the pillow up so it rests against the bedstead, every single time, and in the last show I noticed that he did it here too. I couldn’t work out at first why that had such an impact, but then @ohscorbus mentioned that Albus doesn’t go back to his room after he runs away in the blanket scene. In fact no one goes in until Harry and Ginny do on Hallow’s Eve to find the blanket, and when they do, Albus is with them, if not in body then in spirit.
It’s another little act of ownership, it feels like. The only thing that’s been touched in that room is the blanket, which is still at this point very much Harry’s possession – I doubt Albus feels an ownership over it, especially after how he treated it – so the first person to move anything is Albus, across space and time, and it’s to make the space more comfortable for himself. It’s one of those little things that he’d do to take ownership of the room if he were really there and planning to sit on the bed and do homework or whatever.
Albus taking up his own space, taking ownership of it, inhabiting it, is so important a step for him. He’s uncomfortable and unhappy everywhere it seems, and little things like that feel like a step on the journey towards feeling better.
The penultimate scene
There’s no convoluted meta here, just a good, old fashioned hug. I absolutely love how when Scorpius hugs Albus in this scene, Joe’s Albus gets entirely lost in it for a second. There’s a moment when he forgets himself and buries his face in Scorpius’s shoulder. It’s a very long, peaceful moment. And of course it ends with him remembering that they don’t hug, but it’s so very clear initially that there’s nothing he wants in the world more than Scorpius’s hugs. There’s a solace between the two of them, and it’s still and pure and beautiful. They feel at home together, and I suppose that in the moment of that hug, before his brain kicks in, Albus has never felt more at home anywhere than with his best friend.

Director’s cut on Scorpius & Rose
aka whoever asked me to do this wants me to die
This is not formatted correctly in anyway, but if you’d like here’s a link to it on AO3 where it’s (for the most part) formatted correctly
All bold is my comments
Prologue: Sorting
“Granger-Weasley, Rose!” Headmistress McGonagall calls. I step tentatively onto the stage and climb onto the stool. Slowly, I put on the Sorting Hat. It talks, but different than I expected, not out loud, but in my mind.
oh that’s a nice line. flows real nice (I’m being sarcastic). Also Luna wrote this 3 years ago, so cut them some slack. @stanverscom I love you.
“Another Weasley? How many of you are there? Haha lol  Oooh, but you’re a different one aren’t you? Yes, I know just what house you should be in… RAVENCLAW,” He bellows, and I take him-it?- off and set him on the stool. I spot my siblings and cousins at the Gryffindor table, staring at me incredulously, their hands still at their sides. I’m in Ravenclaw. I’m different, I think, pleased. My entire family went to Gryffindor, even my aunts and uncles. My entire family for generations, Gryffindor. My pride wilts into a twist of nerves. What if they don’t like me anymore? I worry. What if I’m shunned? Honey just take a deep breath.  I take a seat at the Ravenclaw table and smile shyly at the people applauding around me.
The rest of the sorting seems to go by in a blur of wonder that I’m actually in Ravenclaw. That is, until I hear McGonagall call out a name I hadn’t expected. “Malfoy, Scorpius.” As he walks up to the stool I try and recall what my Dad said about him… Ah yes, “stay clear of him” And will that happen? I think not. McGonagall places the Sorting Hat on his slicked back blonde-white hair, and it immediately shouts out “RAVENCLAW.” The whole hall is silenced, as he sits there in shock. Professor McGonagall places her hand on his shoulder gently, and he quickly gets up, handing the Sorting Hat to her. He races down the steps to the Ravenclaw table. People are clapping, but it’s awkward. Nobody expected this. And by the looks of it, neither did Scorpius. While the rest of the Sorting finishes I stare at the boy who seems as out of place in this house as me. After a moment he seems to recover and holds his chin high and proud, as if he can just take away everyone’s memory of his previous nervousness if he acts tough now. Soon the sorting finishes, and the food appears on the platters in front of us. Throughout the whole meal I can’t stop glancing back at Scorpius, who seems to have completely pulled himself together by now. Everyone around him seems to be ignoring him, and there’s space on either side of him for at least two people to sit. It’s a shame. Seems like there’s no getting rid of your family’s reputation. Oh wow, hitting us with those feels and it’s only the first chapter.
Chapter One: Friendship
As the months pass, I heed my father’s word and steer clear of Scorpius. Not for long, bitch.  A nod in the hall, slight acknowledgment that he is alive. Very snekky.
Then the bullies come. Oh man, the drama, the angst. I hate it.  They flock to my red hair and freckles this is a good fucking line, teasing me. “Oh, look at the Weasley. Fish out of water,” Every single bully is from Slytherin. Green robes, proud backs and chins. Fish becomes my nickname there. I’m so sad now.
One day I simply can’t take it. Mood tho.  Instead of doing homework, I sit on a couch in the Commons and bury my face in my knees. The couch shifts slightly to the left as someone sits next to me on it. I lift my face up and find myself looking into Scorpius’s gray-blue eyes. I stare at him for a moment. “I’m not supposed to talk to you. My Dad says.” I say in a calm, measured voice. I wonder why I even said anything, and lower my face again, letting my hair cover my face. He smiles slightly. “Father says not to pay any attention to the low born Weasleys. But Father’s values aren’t always right, besides, they don’t have to know.” Do you know how much I fucking love him.  I sit straight up, startled by his bold statement. “What’s your wand?”he asks, not noticing my alarm.“Like, what’s the core and stuff.” He just wants a friend.
“Willow. Thestral tail.” I say slowly. Why is he asking me this? I consider ignoring him. Didn’t I tell him I wasn’t supposed to talk to him? Does he care about the rules at all? He whistles, impressed. “Thestral tail, huh?” “Yeah.” I blink at him, slowly. “You know, Thestral tail was used in the elder wand.” He pokes me. “Yeah, I know.” I smile at him. Agh, what am I doing? “So, what’s wrong?” He studies me. I swallow heavily, looking down. “It’s nothing.” “Rose…” He says imploringly. I bite my lip. “Okay,” I allowed. WE SWITCHED TO PAST TENSE. “Wait, how do you know my name?” He flushed, looking down at his feet. “Well, I, um..” he looks at me, biting his lip. “I just payed attention to you. You’re not exactly a typical Ravenclaw.” I feel my ears burn a little. “Um.. thanks?” I say awkwardly, clearing my throat and looking away. Scorpius pokes my arm again with a half-smile. “You were saying?” I frown at him. “Why are you so determined to find out why I’m upset?” “So you ARE upset!” He grins triumphantly. Middle schools boys really be like that.
A small bubble of pleasure builds inside me me whenever the cute guy from Spanish class looks at me, and I fight back a smile with an irritated scowl. “I said nothing of the sort. Leave me alone.” “I will not.” He says stubbornly. “Tell me what’s wrong.” “Like you’d care what a fish like me has to say,” I mumble. oh dang that hurted
He must hear me, because he scowls and says, “Is that why you’re upset?” “Is what why I’m upset?” I ask, avoiding his gaze. “Don’t play dumb with me. You’re a Ravenclaw, for God’s sake.” Scorpius glares at me. “The Slytherins.” “Maybe,” I mumble, not meeting his eyes. “I just-“ I cut off with a sigh. “I just wish they’d leave me alone.” Leave ma alone this is all I’m gonna post about for the next 8 days
Scorpius is silent for a moment. “They won’t leave you alone.” “That’s helpful,” I say sarcastically. I love her.
Scorpius ignores me. “They won’t leave you alone because they’re bullies.” He glances at me sidelong. “But I’ll be here for you,” he blurts, staring at his feet and turning bright red. “If you want me to,” he adds. If anyone did this to me I would swoon while screaming my head off.
I smile at him, a new sort of feeling I can’t place swelling inside of me. “That would be perfect.” He’s shocked into meeting my eyes. Slowly, his smile grows to match mine. … My interactions with Scorpius only increase from that day on. The next time we talk, Scorpius is much more subdued. “What’s wrong?” This time I’m the one who’s asking. Scorpius looks up at me sharply. “Nothing.” He bends his head down to continue working on his homework. For a moment, there is no sound but the scratching of quills on paper. “Do you really expect me to believe that? You’re a rubbish actor.” I say. Scorpius glares at me, but gives no reply. “Fine,” I say. “If you don’t tell me anything, I’ll just leave.” Scorpius studies me silently, gauging to see if I am lying. “Fine.” He looks back at his paper. “I’m mad at my dad.” “Your dad?” I repeat, bewildered. “But-“ Scorpius slams shut his textbook and storms out of the commons, leaving his homework half-finished. … God, the nerve of her! I pace back and forth in a hallway just off of the main hall to the Ravenclaw dorms. She thinks she can just butt into my family life. So what if my dad’s disappointed in me? This gets me every time.  I cringe away from the thought. I hate being a Malfoy, anyway. Everyone can tell who I am just by looking at me. Just by glimpsing my hair. I scowl, running my fingers through my white-blonde hair. I hate this hair. I hate these clothes. I never want to look like my father again. Ever. With a sickening sense of satisfaction, I storm into the boy’s dorm. … The next day, Scorpius and I come to some sort of silent agreement. He follows me to class, because everyone else was too rude to show him anywhere, and maybe, just maybe, if someone comes along with me, the Slytherins will leave me alone. But of course, I’m wrong.
“Well, hello there, Fish,” do you know how much I hate him  a tall Slytherin snarls as we pass. Dolohov. His mob of Slytherins quickly surround us, cutting us off from the surroundings. “Looks like you’ve got a tail.” “Leave us alone, Dolohov,” I murmur non-confrontationally. Maybe this time, they’ll leave me alone. But I know better. “We’ll be late to class.” “D’you think I care?” Dolohov says with a snort. “Maybe if you don’t go to class, you’ll learn how to be a little less insufferable.” I bow my head, letting my hair cover my face like a veil. “Leave me alone,” I mumble, backing up a few steps. There’s a cold, harsh laugh as I collide with someone behind me. Rough hands push me forward, causing me to stumble forward and drop my textbooks. I drop to my knees and scoop them up, avoiding Dolohov’s eyes. Avoiding everyone’s eyes, especially Scorpius’s- god, this is so embarrassing, I think, cringing inwardly. “Maybe you’d fit in a little bit more of you weren’t so clumsy, fish,” Dolohov snarls. “Maybe you’d-“ There’s a flash of movement to my left, followed by a thud. I snap my head up and watch in shock as Dolohov reels back, clutching his cheek. “You leave her alone,” Scorpius growls. baby
Dolohov gives him a strange look, but backs away. His group of cronies follow him as they stalk off to wherever their next class is. I turn towards Scorpius, textbooks in hand, gaping. “Let’s go,” he says gruffly, avoiding my eyes. … I can’t believe I did that. I stare at my hands in Charms, unable to focus. I just punched someone. Punched them. “Mr. Malfoy?” Professor Oakwood says. I flinch a little, but he definitely grabbed my attention. “Yes, sir?” I smile at him unconvincingly. He rolls his eyes. “What is the levitation charm?” “I’m sorry, sir,” I say truthfully. “I wasn’t paying attention.” “That’s what I thought,” he said. “Wingardium Leviosa.” … The summer comes all too quickly. Soon, I am boarding the Hogwarts Express, Scorpius close behind me. I walk into an empty compartment, not wanting to deal with anyone who isn’t Scorpius at the moment. We sit in silence for a while, watching the Scotland plains roll by. Scorpius is the one to break the silence. “Rose…” I swallow. “Scorpius, don’t.” “Rose,” he repeats firmly. “You know… you know we won’t be able to talk all summer.” “I know that.” I glare at him. “Rose,” he says with an exasperated sigh. “I don’t like goodbyes,” I tell him. “I don’t want to say goodbye.” “Okay.” Scorpius says.
Chapter Two: Marauder’s Map
I’m antsy. My Dad and Mum are driving us to King’s Cross, and I haven’t seen Scorpius since school got out in June, what with us not wanting to tell our parents about our friendship, for obvious reasons.
“You alright back there, Rose?” My Mum asks, glancing back at me through the rear-view mirror.
“Yeah, I’m fine Mum. Just excited to go back to Hogwarts.” It’s technically not a lie, as I do enjoy all my classes and I know quite a few teachers, but it’s definitely not the whole truth.
When we finally park I practically jump out of the car, lugging my suitcase behind me.
“Wait for us, Rosie.” My Dad says. “We’re getting old you know…” He sighs exasperatedly.
“You’re not even 40 yet!” I shout over my shoulder. I just wanted some wholesome teasing
Soon enough we’re at the platform and saying our goodbyes rushedly.
“I love you too, Mum.” I say, wrestling myself out of her grasp and starting towards the train, which is scheduled to leave any minute now.
“And remember to stay away from that Malfoy!” Yikes  My Dad says before I’m out of earshot. I pretend I don’t hear him, instead running even faster towards the train, but I allow myself a small smile as I hear my mother begin to reprimand him. In this household we love and appreciate Hermione Granger
Once I find an empty compartment I slide into a seat, lifting my suitcase next to me. The train starts moving, and I wave goodbye at my parents until they’re out of sight. Just in time… Where’s Scorpius? The door slides open and I’m met with a familiar face… and yet..
“Scorpius?”
“Um, hi?” He leans against the doorway.
“What did you do to your HAIR?”  I leap to my feet, gaping in shock.
“What does it look like? I dyed it.” Scorpius rolls his eyes as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“But why?! It was so beautiful!” I motion towards him.
“You liked it?” He runs his hand through his light brown hair.
“I…never said that.” I say, realizing my mistake.
“You just did!”
“Did not,” I say defiantly.
“Did too.”
“Why did you dye it?” I say, knowing if I keep it up it could go on for ages. “And brown of all colors.”
“No reason. Just felt like I needed to change things up.”
“Sure.” I say disbelievingly. “Though I’m not completely against the brown…” I LOVE THIS PART OKAY
I sit in the Ravenclaw common room, flipping through the pages of Chadwick’s Charms, Vol. II , but I’m not really reading it. For the first time in the three months my hair has been brown, I find myself regretting it. Father hated it, but that had made me feel proud.
Father hates most things. Including Mother, some days. Her sickness. By extension, me. She wanted a child, even knowing it would make her weaker than before, make the curse act quicker.
….
“Full grown mandrakes are fatal to anyone who hears them.” Professor Longbottom says, but it’s all background noise.
I know I should be paying attention to him, but I learned all of this when I was eight, so I pretend to listen to the professor, facing him and staring at the potted plant right behind him. Instead, I daydream.
As we walk out of Herbology class, Scorpius and I talk. “What amazes me is how a plant as small as that can both kill you, and un-petrify you.” He says.
“Right,” I agree. “Too bad I can only do one of those things.”
“Oh, stop it,” Scorpius said, but there was a look in his eyes that said he wasn’t just joking.
“Oh, I have something I wanna show you! Meet you in the common room.” I say.
“Wha- Okay,” Scorpius says, shaking his head.
I scramble up the stairs leading to the Great Hall, racing towards the Ravenclaw girls dorm, excited to show him what I’ve done.
When I meet Scorpius in the common room a mere five minutes later, I carry my most prized possession.  I beam at him as approach.
“What is it?” Scorpius asks, eying the folded parchment warily.
I smooth it out and whisper to it, “I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.” *gradually gets more and more excited*  The map of Hogwarts appears, and I see Scorpius and I’s names in the Ravenclaw common room. The path to our destination is clear. I grin down at the Marauder's map. “Alright,” I say in a matter-of-fact tone, “We’re going to the Room of Requirements.” Canon doesn’t exist.
I march out, grabbing Scorpius’ arm and dragging him after me. After a few moments, he catches up to me and I drop his hand. I wish he didn’t have such long legs, then I could keep leading. The thought is fleeting, however, as I spot the door I need to see. I need my clubhouse.
I pace back and forth in front of the corridor wall, 3rd floor this week. After a moment, the door appears, and I push it open, revealing the clubhouse.
“Meet Albus Potter, James Potter, Lily Potter, Victoire Weasley,  Dominique Weasley, Fred Weasley II, Louis Weasley, Lucy Weasley, Molly Weasley, Hugo Weasley, Teddy Lupin,  and Roxanne Weasley. Everyone, meet Scorpius Malfoy,” I say loudly, pointing to each person as I name them.
They all come up to inspect who “this Malfoy fellow” is, seeming very polite. James makes a face at the name “Malfoy”, and lingers around the edge of the small crowd surrounding us. After everyone says hello they all, including James, though reluctantly, go back to casting spells.
Scorpius waves, pointedly avoiding James’ gaze, then pulls me aside. “What is this?”
“Nothing bad. Just a bunch of family. We're practicing spells. Protective spells, this week.” I say with a smile.
He frowns. “Nothing bad? That James Potter is bad news. He's, like, a bully, except not as bad. And more arrogant. We all know that one person who fits this description. Basically, a Gryffindor bully.” He gestures to James, who tackles Hugo, proving Scorpius’ point.I sigh. “True. But he's my cousin. I couldn't leave him out.”
“How long has this been going on?” Scorpius demands, running his fingers through his hair. Why is he more of an asshole than I remember.
“Um. A week? Ish?” I shrug.” I just needed time to tell you.” I cock my head. “Why? Does it matter?”
“When were you busy?” He asks, avoiding the question.
“All week! And so were you. We have a lot of homework.” I point to the stack of papers in a corner. “That's a copy of all the homework for this week. One copy.”
He sighs. “I know. Sorry.” All the anger evaporates from his posture.
I grin and glance around the room. Everyone seems occupied, so I lean in to hug Scorpius. He smells like ink and old parchment, and I breathe it in. It smells like home.
Rose is hugging me.  And I just want this to be a happy moment, but goddammit can’t stop thinking about my mother. I try and melt into the hug as best I can. I mean, I really am happy about the club, and all, but am I even allowed to be in it? Everyone in here has a family that was on the good side of the war, and then there’s me.
I wish it was my mom hugging me.
Chapter Three: Library Visit
I sit on an armchair in the Ravenclaw commons, and finish doing the last of my homework. It’s rather early to be “staying in”; most people stay out of the commons until 9:00, and it’s only 7, just after dinner. Students are finding any excuse to not be pent up in here all night, but I don’t mind. It’s quieter without everyone else. I worry about the O.W.L’s, nerves eating at my stomach. my brother has a classmate like this.  What if I don’t pass? It may only be our 2nd year, but the teachers are already pressuring us to be ready for them. “WEASLEY, WEASLEY!!!!!” A voice bellows outside the door. “FISH! FISH!” “PEEVES!” I yell. “LEAVE ME ALONE!” I am answered by cackling, and something thumping on the door. I point my wand in the general direction of his voice. “SILENCIO!” I yell. I am greeted by silence, and I smile. A small win for a small fish. I wrote this line and I was so proud.
Scorpius appears suddenly from the boy’s dorms. “How’s homework going?” He asks, his gaze meandering around the room. “Fine. I’ll get it all done, at least.” I smile. “You?” Of course he’s done, otherwise he wouldn't be here, I reprimand myself. “I finished it. A while ago, actually.” He finally looks at me in the eyes and takes a deep breath. “I was wondering if maybe you might want to do some light reading.” I smile at the reference, nodding. “Sure. Scorpius grabs my hand. “C’mon, then,” he says with a smile. He pulls me through the halls to the library. It’s rather annoying, honestly, but he’s much taller and faster than me, so we make good time. As we enter, he heads straight to the front desk and hands a slip of paper to the school librarian, Professor Wolffe. She looks at us suspiciously, gaze darting from Scorpius to me. She raises her eyebrow, and finally nods. Scorpius smiles, turning and walking to the Restricted Section, which is, well, restricted, to all students without special permission. He seems to know the area, however, and heads straight to a certain bookshelf. He runs his fingers along the spines before reaching a particularly thick one. As he pulls it off the shelf, a huge cloud of dust bursts in our faces. I pull my hand from his and wave it in front of my face, wheezing. “What’s this for?” I ask. “Your club,” Scorpius says simply. “My club?” He quickly turns and walks out of the library, not bothering to respond. I scoff and follow him, nodding at Professor Wolffe as I leave. I follow him to the Room of Requirements. We enter, and thankfully, no one is inside. The only things we see are the bookshelf, which Scorpius puts his book on, the calendar, marked with homework and meeting dates, and the assorted pillows and bean bag chairs. “Are you going to join the club, or what?” I ask Scorpius, breaking the silence. “Really?” He asks. “I thought it was family stuff.” “No. You know, technically Teddy isn’t family. He isn’t related to anyone in the club...He is dating Victore though-” I suddenly feel that I am oversharing and snap my mouth shut. Scorpius blinks, then shakes his head. “Okay.” He seems a little upset about something. “So? Do you want to join?” I ask, tilting my head. “Yeah. Sure.” He smiles at me, but his mind is somewhere else. “What’s up?” I wave my hand in his face. “You said that Teddy’s last name is Lupin, right?” He bites his lip nervously. “Yes.” I say, unsure to where this is going. “So his parents were Tonks and Remus Lupin?” “Yes...” I say slowly. “Well…” He rubs his hands together in a nervous way, “My grandparents were Death Eaters, and they were there at the Battle of Hogwarts...” “Oh.” I suddenly understand. “It’s fine. He was a baby, then. He never knew his parents.” “Exactly.” Scorpius whispers. And then he’s gone, racing out the door. … Scorpius doesn’t return to the Commons. I begin to worry when it’s midnight and he’s still not back. He’s never like this, he’s always there, waiting for me, protecting me. We should have written her with more fire here.  It’s also after curfew, another thing that is unlike him. Also I miss him. I push the thought away and find the Marauder's Map. “I solemnly swear I am up to no good,” I whisper. I don’t find his name on the map. He must be in the Room of Requirements. I put it away and slip off to find him. I wrap myself in my invisibility cloak and tiptoe through the hallways. When I finally reach the Room of Requirements, it’s dead silent everywhere. It’s way past curfew. If we’re caught, we’ll be in big trouble. “I need to find Scorpius,” I whisper to the door, then I push it open. In front of me I see a large, dark room full of odd objects. I hear his voice, whispering something. I follow the sound, and see him sitting on a cushioned armchair, pouring over textbooks. “Hey.” I say softly, pulling off the invisibility cloak. He jumps, startled. “Oh, um… hi.” “Do you know what time it is?” I ask, crossing my arms. He shakes his head. “Nine?” He closed the book and sets it next to him. “No. 12:30.” I raise an eyebrow. “What? Really?” He leaps up. “Sorry.” ‘’It’s fine. What you need to be sorry about is that Peeves is unsilenced.” I grin teasingly. He groans. “Great. He’ll turn us in.” I giggle. “Not if he doesn't see us.” I hold out the cloak.“This is my uncle’s Invisibility Cloak. Yes Harry gave his invisibility cloak to Rose, back off.  If we both get under it, I think it should cover most of us.” “What, really?” Scorpius looks at me skeptically. “Just get under it,” I say with a heavy sigh. “Okay.” We both manage to get mostly covered by the invisibility cloak, but our feet are still visible. “Okay… this is fine,” I say. “As long as nobody is looking for feet, we won’t be seen.” Scorpius gives me a thumbs up, and we shuffle awkwardly down the hall. We make it all the way to the Ravenclaw tower’s door before a problem arises. How will we open the door without talking? I wonder. As if on cue, the bronze knocker chimes, “I am the beginning of every end, and the end of time and space. I am essential to creation, and I surround every place. What am I?” “It’s E,” Scorpius whispers, and we walk in, throwing off the cloak. Thankfully, the commons are empty. “See you tomorrow,” I whisper, and he nods. “Wait.” I grab his elbow. “Don’t stress about Teddy, okay? He’s a grown man. He can deal with himself. He doesn't need his parents. Besides, Uncle Harry had him.” Scorpius hesitates, then nods. “I won’t. Goodnight, Rose.” He kisses my cheek, then disappears into the boys dorm. I smile, touch my cheek, and go to bed. … I’m kind of appalled at my own bravery. I sit down in the boy’s dorm room. Unfortunately, Lorcan is still wide awake. “Why were you out so late?” He demanded. “I lost track of time.” “Nobody told you when it passed curfew?” “No.” “Why?” “I wasn’t with anybody.” “Not even Rosie?” “No.” “Then why was she gone for so long?” “I don’t know!” “... didn’t you guys have detention?” “Shut up, Lorcan.”
... I lay in my bed in the girl’s dorm, staring at the roof. I can already tell I’m not going to sleep tonight. My brain is running in ten different directions, and I’m getting dizzy. I try to focus on one thought, but then my brain is overloaded with thoughts of Scorpius. I realize that any attempt otherwise is futile and abandon any thought that doesn’t have to do with Scorpius, and daydream.
Chapter Four: New Year, Old You
The next school year arrives rather uneventfully. Summer bores me endlessly- I can’t figure out a way to send a letter to Scorpius without my parents noticing! I sit on the Hogwarts Express in the usual compartment, glancing hopefully at the door every few seconds. Just as the train begins to move, Scorpius slides open the door and steps in. “Scorpius!” I stand up. “Your hair!” I get a rush of deja vu, remembering last year. He smiles, running his fingers through his long, platinum blonde hair. “I thought you liked it better this way.” I scowl. “I never said that.” “You did too. Anyway, I thought you’d be more irritated by the fact that I’m a lot taller than you now,” he points out. My scowl only deepens. “You were always taller than me.” “True,” Scorpius says, sitting down. I sit down on the seat across from him, smiling. This year is already off to a good start. … I hadn’t told Rose yet. How could I? She was gone, and Father’s temper was only getting worse. Luna wrote this and I cried the first time reading it.   Mother would’ve wanted him to move on, to forget her, but I am a walking reminder of the life Father never deserved in the first place. He didn’t even want me. He would’ve prefered to keep Mother for longer rather than have me at all. He wanted the Malfoy line to end. Maybe it would with me. I pull the small ring out of my pocket. My mother’s ring. I press the stone to my lips and try not to cry. ... 3rd year proves to be a lot more stressful than 2nd year. The teachers really have started to crack down, trying to prepare us for the O.W.L.S. that we’ll take our 5th year. We’re in Care of Magical Creatures. My textbook - The Monster Book of Monsters-is open, squashed under my foot as I strain to follow Grawp’s reading. The book struggles, trying its best to chomp on my foot, making everything more difficult. Grawp may have taken over Hagrid’s job, but Hagrid still leads the first years to Hogwarts, even though he’s retired. Grawp looms above us, reading a ginormous version of the same Monster Book of Monsters book. With a grin, I remember how that book nearly ate a student when I was in first grade. I try to listen to Grawp, try to refocus, but I find myself once again overwhelmed by thoughts of Scorpius. I’m not sure I'll get anything done at this rate. “Unicorns, however pretty, can also be useful,” Grawp is saying. “Focus,” I whisper to myself. “What’s that?” Scorpius whispers, leaning to the side. “Nothing,’’ I tell him. “What is it?” He asks, tickling me with a strand of my hair. “Shh! Listen to Grawp!” I whisper. “-can be made with Unicorn hair. Follow me,” Grawp is saying, walking over to his hut. He snaps closed The Monster Book of Monsters and belts it closed. He stuffs it in his cottage and smiles. “What are some other uses that Unicorns have?” I raise my hand. “Rose?” He says. “Unicorn blood can be used to grant immortality, but is also very dangerous.” I say, cursing myself for missing what he said earlier. “That’s right!” Grawp says with a smile. I move on to Defense against the Dark Arts, and get out my textbook, DA Defense by Amelia Storme, and sit at my desk. “Turn to page 394,” Professor Storme says, and I flip to it. Boggarts are creatures that take a form to terrify you, The first sentence reads. I sigh. I know all about boggarts. “Read through page 400,’’ She drones. ... We’re in Charms, and I find myself ignoring Professor Oakwood and staring at Scorpius. Have his eyes always looked like that? His eyes are gray, with light blue traces swirling around in them, which I knew, but I find hints of darker blue rimming the pupil. I could get lost in those eyes, finding all the different grays and blues. Scorpius looks up and catches me staring at him. He smiles and I blush, looking down, but in a few minutes I’m staring up at him again. “Remember, class,” Professor Oakwood intones. “Swish and flick,” The class responds out of habit. I watch Scorpius’ long hair move slightly in the breeze coming from the open window and smile.
Chapter Five: Confessions In The Dark
Later, I sit on my usual couch, writing an essay on Boggarts for DA, when the couch shifts. I look up to see Lorcan Scamander sitting next to me.
“Hey, Lorcan,” I say, and go back to my paper. In order to dispel a Boggart , I write, You think of happy memories and say the charm Riddikulus.
“Hey…’’ Lorcan says, rubbing his neck. He opens his mouth and shuts it, shaking his head.
After several moments of this, I ask, “What is it?”
“You know what? Nevermind!” He says, turning beet red and running off. I watch him, puzzled.
“What was that all about?” Scorpius asks, sitting next to me. He has a medium-sized bag slung around his shoulders, looking light. I wonder what could be in there.
“No idea,” I say with a shrug.
“Huh.” He said. “Are you finished with homework?”
“Almost,” I say. “I just have to finish this essay.”
“Well, hurry up.” Scorpius grins teasingly. I finish the paper in two minutes flat. Who cares if’ it’s half-finished if it means more time with Scorpius? “Want to go somewhere?” He asks nervously.
“Sure,” I say. “Where are we going?”
“It’s a surprise.” He replies. He grabs my hand with a smile. “Come with me.”
“Okay,” I say with a smile. He pulls me to my feet and let’s go of my hand with an awkward cough. He leads me through the halls, towards the main entrance, but we are stopped by an all too familiar frame.
“Well, well, well ,” Dolohov says. “What have we here ?”
“Leave me alone, Dolohov,” I snap.
“It looks like it’s the fish and her tail. ” He takes a few steps forward. Dolohov’s eyes are cruel and dark, his hair swirling around his face in a chaotic way as he speaks. “What are you two doing, huh? Probably running off to snog in the forbidden forest!” He laughs, a harsh, grating sound.
“Why do you want to know?” I take a step forward, causing Dolohov to take a hasty step back, almost running into the croon standing behind him. “Are you jealous of the amount of time I spend with Scorpius? I’m sure you’d like it a lot better if I blindly followed you around, right? Just like all of your other ‘friends’,” I say. “Of course, maybe you’d feel better if your parents cared about you.” sorry but that’s so rude. I get that she’s being bullied but damn. Dolohov looks like I’ve just slapped him. “Wha-“I push past him. “Come on, Scorpius.”He follows me quickly, not wanting to stick around. “That wasn’t very nice.”I bite my lip, feeling a stab of guilt. “I know. I shouldn’t have done that.”“No, it was cool,” Scorpius says with a smile.I smile shyly back. “Thanks.”“Hey, I’m supposed to be leading!” He says with a laugh. I slow down, and he leads me out of Hogwarts, across the darkening lawn, and into Hogsmeade.“Why are we here?” I ask, looking around at the surroundings. The cold September air bites at my hands, and the fact that it’s already dark doesn’t help that fact.. Without responding, Scorpius walks up to the side of a shop and pulls down a ladder from the roof.“What's going on? What are you doing?” I whisper, staring at him.“Just… Follow me.” He says with a small smile. He begins to climb up the ladder.“Are you crazy? Onto the roof?” I demand, crossing my arms.“Trust me.” Scorpius says, and he looks straight into my eyes. Something I can’t name stirs in me, telling me to listen to him.“Okay.” I sigh, to both of our surprise. He grins and keeps climbing. I follow him up the ladder, and he turns and pulls me the rest of the way onto the roof. The view is incredible: I can see all the shops, Hogwarts, the mountains surrounding the valley, and Scorpius’s eyes, which are as enchanting as your first time at Hogwarts. And the sky, oh, the sky , is lit up in beautiful stars.“It's beautiful,” I breathe, staring into Scorpius’s eyes, and for a moment I’m not sure if I mean the view or him. Scorpius smiles, and looks down at his feet. I look down at my hands and find them still entwined with Scorpius’. I flush and pull my hands away....“Rose?” My heart is pounding in my chest. I can’t seem to bring myself to say it,“Yeah?” Rose looks over at me, her eyes full of wonder.“My mother died.” My throat seems to constrict around the words, reducing them to the point that they’re barely audible.“Sorry?” She asks, tilting her head towards me. “I didn’t hear that.”My hand dips into the pocket of my robes, and I grasp the ring there. “My mother died,” I repeat. “Oh, Scorpius….” Rose scoots closer to me and grabs my free hand in both of hers, looking into my eyes. “I’m truly sorry.”“There’s nothing to apologize for,” I manage to choke out. “You didn’t cast.. The.. curse,” I gasp a little in between the words, fighting back sobs.Rose’s face twitches, as if she isn’t sure what to say, and settles on a sympathetic look, her thumb travelling in circles on my hand.I swallow heavily and pull the ring from my pocket. “This is for you.”“Really?”“She’d want you to have it.” I place it in Rose’s hands.Realization dawns on her face, and she quickly tries to hand it back. “I can’t take this,” She says.I curl her fingers shut around the ring. “She always wanted to meet you.”Rose swallows and puts it on.”Thank you.”...We sit on the roof for what seems like a short while. This illusion is shattered when the sky starts turning pink. The sunrise is glorious, filling the skies with gold and pink, lighting up the bright shops. Scorpius jumps                          up and starts climbing off the roof, but I am paralyzed, staring into the bright sunlight.“Come on, we have to move!” Scorpius whispers urgently, jerking his head.“Woah,” I whisper. “This is even better than our roof.’’ Scorpius freezes, a painful look crossing his face for a second before continuing to climb down. I shake my head and close my eyes, and bright spots dance behind my eyelids. When I open them, Scorpius is back by my side. He tugs my arm, looking desperate.“I’ll leave without you!” He threatens.“I’m coming!” I say, energized by a sudden realization: It’s light outside. I dart down the ladder after Scorpius. He tugs me after him, towards the Whomping Willow. We sneak around the back and slip in through the great hall. “Crap.” I whisper, flattening myself against the wall and stare at Miss Cod.Why oh why didn’t I think to bring the cloak?Scorpius opens his bag quickly and quietly so as to not attract attention from the caretaker and cat currently halfway down the corridor. He lifts the invisibility cloak out of it and wraps it around us. I give him a confused look, how did you get this?  But he places his index finger in front of his mouth, reminding me of what’ll happen if we talk right now.Mr. Furgle growls at us and sniffs the air.“What is it, love?’’ Miss Cod says, petting Mr. Furgle’s head. “Is a naughty, naughty child out of bed?” She croons. “Find them, love!” She cackles and sets Mr Furgle on the ground. He immediately tears towards us. “No, love.” Miss Cod sighs. “There’s no one there. You must be hungry, poor kitty.” Mr. Furgle growls at us, and his mouth foams. He gives a final sniff then trots off, disappearing into the shadows with Miss Cod.  We wait until we can no longer hear their footsteps, then inch along the wall, walking back to the Ravenclaw tower. “When do you go on red and stop on green?’’ The door asks.“When you’re eating a watermelon!” I whisper hastily, but I can’t help but giggle.“Very good.” She says, and the door swings open.I pull off the cloak as we step inside. “How did you get this?” I whisper, yet again, hoping not to wake anyone up.“You left it in the Room of Requirements last meeting, so I grabbed it today after lunch.” He sighs lightly, but it comes out more like a yawn. In the light starting to pour in through the windows I can see dark circles starting to form underneath his eyes.“Goodnight, Scorpius.” I wave and start heading towards my dorm room.“Goodnight, Rosie.” While I stand in shock at the use of my nickname, Scorpius slips away to the boy’s dorms.
Chapter Six: Howler
I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. I twist the ring Scorpius gave me. It’s silver, with a beautiful sapphire set into it.
Why did he choose to give this to me ?
“Meow,” My cat says, and jumps on my face.
“Bloody hell, Gi! Ugh!!” I shove the cat off of my face and hear rustling in the four-poster next to mine, which means I probably woke up Chris. “Sorry!” I whisper. “Gingersnap, be quiet!”
“Mrorow?” She says, then she begins purring.
“Fine. Sometimes I wish you were one of Uncle George’s Pygmy Puffs. It would be so much easier.” Gi stares up at me as if defying my statement. “Alright, Gi, but leave me alone.”
“Meeeoooooww.” She says, as if saying fine.
Crying. Perfectly normal, a reaction to hormones racing through your brain, and god knows I have plenty of those.
So why can’t I cry?
...
The next day, I’m in Herbology with Scorpius. I am completely ignoring Professor Longbottom again, although it probably doesn't matter, because he talks about his classes at home during the summer anyway.
“What?” Scorpius asks. I realize that I’ve been staring at him while I was lost in thought.
“Nothing.” I say.
Scorpius smirks. “Can't keep your eyes off me, huh?”
I blush. “No! That's not it! Shush! Pay attention!” I swat his arm.
“Rose?” Professor Longbottom asks. I whip my head around to face the front of the room and I can see everyone staring at me.
“What?” I ask.
“What is the main purpose of mimbulus mimbletonia?”
I rack my brain trying to remember. “Uh, Mimbulus mimbletonia is widely known by it defense mechanism, which is to spray a sticky substance known as stinksap.”
“Correct.” He smiles, then goes back to lecturing the class. Slowly everyone turns back to face Professor Longbottom.
...
The next morning I’m eating a bowl of hot cereal when Pig, the family owl, flies in and drops a howler on the table. I stare at it for a moment.
That can’t be good.
“Hey.” Scorpius says, sliding into the spot next to me. He opens his mouth, but I don’t hear what he says next because the howler slides on the edge of the table and hits the floor. I pick it up, the seal cracks, and the letter starts yelling at me.
“ROSE GRANGER-WEASLEY!” My father’s voice screeches. “HOW DARE YOU GO ANYWHERE NEAR THAT MALFOY FILTH!”
At first I’m confused as to what this was prompted by, but then I remember the letter I sent to them a week ago. I must’ve mentioned Scorpius. Oops . I wince.
“DO YOU NOT REMEMBER WHAT I SAID? HIS FAMILY ARE DEATH EATERS! THEY ALL BETRAYED US…” My dad continues to rant about disgusting ‘Malfoy filth’, but all I see is Scorpius slowly sliding down in his chair, all I can hear is the thunderous laughter coming from the other tables.
“EVEN YOUR MOTHER AGREES, WE TOLD YOU HOW SHE PUNCHED HIS SNOBBY FATHER IN THE FACE…” I break out of my stunned trance and quickly turn over my bowl of hot cereal, trapping the Howler underneath and muffling it. “MMMMM!” I hear. I smile sheepishly around at my fellow students and run out of the Great Hall with the Howler, still yelling loudly, but muffled against my robes and the bowl.
“That went well,” A familiar voice behind me says. I whirl around to see Scorpius.
“Yeah,” I say, rolling my eyes.
Scorpius opens his mouth and shuts it before settling on, “Did your mom really punch my dad in the face?
“According to my parents, yes.” Scorpius laughs, and I grin back.
“Yeah, somehow that doesn’t seem like something my dad would want anyone to know about,” Scorpius says between giggles.
Something tingles in the air, offsetting the mood.
Peeves flies in overhead. Of course. Way to ruin the moment.
“Ooooooooooh!” He chuckles gleefully. “Scorpius and Rose, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-”
“Shut up , Peeves!” I yell. He flies out, still singing. “Great,” I sigh.
“That’s going to spread fast,” Scorpius agrees.
I peer at him. He seems carefree, leaning against the wall, smiling and talking, but he bites his lip, and I see the same nervousness in his eyes that I saw in the first day of school. “What?” I ask him.
“Huh?” He says, snapping out of a trance.
“What is it?” I ask him.
“Nothing.” He says with a fake smile. “I’m fine.”
I’m not fine.
Chapter Seven: Staying Here
“Please let Professor Oakwood know if you are staying here for Christmas,” The Gray Lady intones as she floats through the Ravenclaw commons.
Scorpius sighs.
I glance up from my book, Hogwarts, A History. “Are you staying here again ?” I ask him.
“Yes.” He frowns.
“Why?” I flip to the next chapter, The Enchanted Ceiling .
He picks up a large book and peers at it. “I don’t like Christmas.” He says, not looking up from it.
“That’s impossible. Everyone likes Christmas.” I close my book and glare at him.
“I don’t like Christmas at home , then.” He turns the page in his book.
“Why not? Stockings… St. Nick… presents... what’s not to like?”
“You can talk all day, I’m still staying here,” Scorpius says.
“You’ll be alone.” I set my book down on the marble coffee table.
“It won’t be any different from last year,” He points out, but we both know it isn’t true.
His mother.
“Maybe it will.”
“How?”
“If you don’t go home this year, I’ll stay too.”
Scorpius rolls his eyes. “No, you won’t.”
“Actually, I will.” I stand up and put my hands on my hips.
He looks at me carefully. “Okay then.”
“Really?” I blink.
He shrugs. “Being stuck with you all break is preferable to going home.”
I look at him in shock for a moment. “I’ll write my Mum and Dad,” I say finally, composing myself.
“You do that,” Scorpius says, his attention back on his book.
I set down the book I’m reading as soon as Rose vanishes into the girl’s dorm. I’m not even sure what I was reading; I wasn’t paying attention.
She’s staying here for Christmas?  It’s a weird thought. I’ve had Christmas alone for several years now- It’s always quiet, and calm, with nobody around. I picture my typical Christmas being shattered by Rose bounding out of the girl’s dorm, wearing a horrendous sweater I’ve only ever heard about and squealing, and I can’t help but smile.
Rose emerges again, holding an envelope.
Father will be alone this year. I almost felt guilty, but then the rage builds back up behind my sternum. Maybe he deserves it.
She turns and smiles at me, and a bit of the rage ebbs away. I smile back.
“I’ll tell Professor Oakwood that I’m staying and go give this to a school owl,” she says, holding up the envelope.
I nod. “Okay.”
I hum quietly as I enter the common room. Everyone has already left for the train ride home, and Scorpius and I are the only Ravenclaws staying at Hogwarts for the holidays. Scorpius is sitting in front of a bookshelf, looking up at the domed ceiling covered in stars. He turns his head to look at me with a small, slightly sad smile. “Hey,” he says softly.
“Hey,” I respond, sitting next to him.
He looks back up at the stars, silent.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” I ask.
“Talk about what?” He sounds heartbroken.
“Your mum. I know she meant a lot to you.”
“She died 5 and a half months ago, Rose. It doesn’t matter anymore.”
I turn to face him. “Your mum doesn’t mean nothing, even if she’s dead.” He flinches, so I soften my voice. “I’m sorry, Scorpius. I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you when you needed me. But if there’s anything I can do now, just tell me, okay?” I give him a soft smile.
“Alright.” He exhales and gets up. “I’m gonna go down to the kitchens and see if there’s any food. Do you want anything?”
My stomach rumbles. “Do you think there’s any steak and kidney pie left from last night?”
“I can almost guarantee it. Be back in 20.”
Mum sends me a letter on Christmas Eve, saying that she misses me and wishes I was home with the family. Hugo signs at the bottom in green, standing out against the neat black lettering. Have fun, Rosie! I chuckle. Only Hugo would be happy that I’m staying at Hogwarts with Scorpius. He thinks we’re “cute”. I have to keep telling him we’re not dating.
Christmas morning I wake up to see a pile of packages at the foot of my bed. I groan when I see a lumpy present in red wrapping. Grandma Weasley. I cringe as I open it, knowing there’s going to be a sweater in there. I exhale deeply, relieved when I realize it’s blue and not maroon.
When I walk down to the commons room Scorpius is already up and has a book in his lap. Gingersnap rubs against his legs before laying down. She paws at his toes and he quickly drags them away.
“Can you please tell your cat to not bite me? That would be much appreciated.” He looks up at me. “Is that the infamous Weasley sweater?” He sounds excited. “It looks a lot softer than I thought it would. Can I feel it?”
I step forward to the couch, and pet Gingersnap. “Be nice!” I reprimand her, sticking my other arm out to Scorpius, who still has his legs curled up against him.
“That is so soft. I’m a little bit jelly.” He says, joking.
“What did you get for Christmas?”
“My dad sent me a watch.”
“That... Hm.”
“Yeah. I’m not sure how to feel about it either.”
Chapter Eight: Senior Prank But It’s Third Years
Too soon, the Christmas holiday is over and everyone returns to Hogwarts. I’d never realized just how loud everyone was. Even just people studying, their quills scratching across parchment, is louder than I thought.  It’s only the second day back and teachers have already started piling on the homework. Deciding to ignore the mountain of homework on my bed, I opt for a walk outside.
Scorpius joins me on the grounds while snow falls around us. We walk next to each other, the ground littered with big soggy flakes.
He shivers. "It is so cold out here." He tugs his cloak around him. His muffler hat is wrapped tightly over his head, but his nose is pink.
"And that is exactly why we're out here." He looks at me, a mixture of confusion and betrayal on his face. "Nobody else is out here because it's so cold, which makes it the perfect place to plan a prank."
"Who are we pranking? And why?"
"We are gonna give James a taste of his own medicine."
Scorpius giggles a little bit at that. "What?"
"You said it yourself. James is a Gryffindor bully. But what if we made him pay?"
"Rose, what are you talking about? I mean, I can get behind making him stop, but what are you planning?"
"So I say that we use my Uncle George's swamp spell and put it in his bag. Or even better, his bed, but that would be too hard because we can't get into the Gryff-unless!" I turn to face him, excited. "We had a spy on the inside." Hamilton, anyone?
"Or..." Scorpius adds, slowing down our conversation. But he looks as if a light bulb just went off in his head."We could put it in his goblet at dinner. Of course, we'd have to make sure the swamp was harmless first, but imagine having a swamp in a cup! That would be so cool!" Nerd
"Okay, so-new plan. You go talk to Professor Longbottom about a harmless swamp. He's the professor, so he should be the best source. And I'll talk to my uncle."
"Rose." He gives me a sly smile. "I have an idea. When the Gryffindor house wins house cup again we could put it in James’ cup.”
I nod at him. “Vengeance.”
“I’m sorry. You’re doing what?” I love this reaction.  Victoire exclaims, confusion and anger in her voice.“Look, all we need is details. Who could put it in his cup?” I ask.“Why are you two doing this?”I faux sigh. “Victoire. He’s basically just a Gryffindor bully.”She half shrugs, her light blonde hair brushing against her shoulders. “Yeah, he’s a bit annoying and all, but I don’t think he means to hurt anyone.”“Except for the Slytherins,” Scorpius mumbles.Victoire ignores him. “Look, you two should just stop. Trust me, you don’t want to get on his bad side,” She says definitively and walks out of the Room of Requirement, leaving Scorpius and me alone together.“Do you think we should stop? She seemed pretty serious.”“The one time that she ever got on James’ bad side was when she and Teddy started dating. James ignored her for three months.” I exhale. “But, I trust her. So if she says we shouldn’t we shouldn’t.”…Scorpius and I are awkward around James for a bit afterwards. Victoire keeps eyeing us in the club as if she’s assessing us. James gets suspicious though.“What are you two up to that I don’t know about?”“No-nothing.” I blurt out.He side-eyes me. “You’re lying.” He glances over to Victoire who is looking at us, her eyes pleading as if she thinks that just that is enough to keep us from pranking my cousin. He looks back at us and looks us both up and down. “This is gonna sound repulsive, but are you two dating?”“No!” says Scorpius quickly.“Hm. Interesting.” He steps back. “Alright, I’ll leave you two alone for now. But I’ve got my eyes on you.” He raises his index and middle fingers to his eyes, then points them at us.We sigh in relief as he walks away.“That was a close call.”Scorpius gives me a small smile, but it doesn’t reach his eyes.…“Are you sure we can’t send letters to each other over the summer?” I ask.“My parents would freak. I’m sorry Scorpius.”I shrug. “It’s alright. I didn’t expect anything different. I mean, I’m pretty sure if my dad found a letter you sent me he’d throw a fit too.”She takes a hold of my hand and lightly squeezes it. I look up at her. Her red hair, her freckles all across her face, and her smile. I smile back. This summer I’m gonna find a way for Rose and me to talk without owls.We both get off the train, separately so our families don’t think we’re hanging out. I watch Rose out the window as she runs towards her family, their arms wide open for her.My dad’s on the far side of the station, away from the entrance. Probably trying to avoid drawing attention to himself.I wait to get off the train until her family has left the station through the bricks. My first time seeing my dad in 10 months is nothing like how Rose’s family reunion went. He stands there while I lug my suitcase and Andromeda my screeching owl towards him.“Hey, Dad.”He nods solemnly at me. “Son.” His eyes look pained, but I don’t know why.Probably Mother. This is gonna be a long summer.…This is gonna be the best summer of my life. Sure I can’t talk to my best friend, but I get to play quidditch with everyone else. And sure we have to visit Gramma Weasley and Grandpa Weasley, but we also get to use their backyard as a field for quidditch and spend our days out in the sun.I’m not actually a big fan of professional quidditch, Mum says I get that from her, but it’s Weasley tradition to play when we’re all together over the holiday.Albus and I spend a lot of time together when Uncle Harry and Aunt Ginny bring him and James and Lily over. So we spend part of our days outside underneath blue rhododendron bushes, looking up at the sky in between the soft petals.“I think I like Scorpius,” I say.“Oh?” He sounds disinterested. #just cousin things
“Yeah.” And I leave it at that.
Something is wrong.
My dad won’t come out of his office to eat or sleep in a bed or drink water. Sometimes I hear soft snoring, and I saw him asleep on his desk, his head resting against an open book.
But… he still had dark circles underneath his eyes.
“Hey, Dad?” I’d prompted when he started behaving like this.
He responded only with a grunt.
And he hasn’t responded with anything since.
We don’t have maids or house elves; my dad insists we do everything by ourselves. So I make myself and him sandwiches and pasta. I take plates up to his study and leave him be.
I think he likes the pasta. He eats more of that than the sandwiches. A couple bites. Mum used to make pasta once a week, tortellini, angel’s hair, penne, linguine. We’d go to the store and she’d let me pick out the type of pasta we’d have that week. I too love pasta
I should tell someone about Dad. Maybe they can help him. My immediate thought is Rose, but she told me to not contact her over the summer because her family would freak out. My dad told me to never talk to my Grandpa Lucius, and Grandmother Narcissa died a couple years ago. And we don’t have any other family, so I guess my only choice is Rose.
In my room, I grab a piece of parchment and a quill and pen to her.
Dear Rose,
I know you told me not to contact you over the summer, but I think this is really important.
My dad hasn’t been talking to me or eating anything besides a couple bites of pasta and sandwiches every so often and he hasn’t left his study in days.  Maybe your parents can help? I wasn’t sure who else I could contact.
Your friend,
Scorpius
I blink, trying to think about the letter Scorpius sent me.
His great grey owl Andromeda nudges my hand and I give her a treat. “You stay here. I’ll be back with a letter for Scorpius.”She preens her feathers, and I take that as a yes.
I run down the stairs, my feet pounding against the steps.
“Mum!” I call, knowing she’ll be more likely to help.
“What is it, dear?” She asks from her favourite blue armchair. Her glasses are slipping down her nose and she has a book in her hand, per usual. Soft grown up Hermione is what I live for.
I walk towards her carefully, making sure my dad isn’t around.
“Scorpius’ dad needs our help.”
“Malfoy needs OUR   help?” My father exclaims. “And what has that idiot ever done for us?”
“Ronald, try and be a little more sensitive. His wife died last year and he’s obviously depressed.”
He grunts then looks up at my mum, and he seems to understand. He sighs in defeat. “Alright. But what can we do? Drag him out of his office? I doubt that would work.” Mum glares at him. “I’ll go call St. Mungo’s.”
“So what are you gonna do with the kid? He can’t stay in a big empty house all by himself. And it looks like the only living relative is Lucius Malfoy, who worked for You-Know-Who.” The guy from St. Mungo’s is standing there in a white doctor’s jacket, all buttoned up nice and pretty, staring down at me and my parents.
Someone else is inside talking to Scorpius and I saw multiple people go in to talk to his dad.
I feel bad for both of them.
Thinking about Scorpius, I almost miss it, but Mum glances at Dad, then says “We’ll take him.”
“You can’t avoid it forever.” Scorpius won’t look at me. He looks down at the dirt, rubbing the back of his neck. “Scorpius.”
He finally looks up, his eyes bright with tears. “I don’t want to see her,” He says. “If I see her, it makes it real.”
“You kids coming?” Dad is already inside the cemetery, and he waits behind while Mum and Hugo move forward towards the Black lot.
“Yeah,” I call forward, and I look to Scorpius.
He looks at me and sighs.
We move forward together.
Dad is already there by the time we reach her grave.
It’s not the first time we’ve visited, and it won’t be the last, but that doesn’t make this part any easier.
I look at Dad.
He looks at me.
The Weasleys lag behind, too polite to impose themselves in our situation, but I kind of wish they would.
Looking over me, Dad says, “Thank you.” It’s stiff and brittle and I’m pretty sure it’s the first time the words have passed his lips.
Mr. Weasley looks shocked. Then he looks uncomfortable. “Uh, yeah, no problem mate,” He says.
A bit of trademark distaste shows in Dad’s eyes, and I allow myself to relax. It fades without him saying anything- another first- and he looks back to me and steps forward to crush me in a hug.
I freeze, and he pulls away before I can hug back. He has tears in his eyes, and if he starts crying, I know I’m done for.
Instead, he says “thank you” again, and the Weasleys leave us alone to grieve..
I almost wish they didn’t have to give me back.
...
The summer is interesting, to say the least. After Scorpius’s extended stay at my house, life falls back into its normal routines. Dad tells me that he’s fine with me being friends with Scorpius now that he knows he isn’t “evil like his father” and I have to struggle not to roll my eyes.
You’d think after everything that happened Dad would have changed his mind about Mr. Malfoy, but I guess they have too much history.
The rumors I overhear on Platform 9 ¾ make me want to throw up.
Why can’t people just be friends?
this chapter is depressing af
Chapter Nine: Quidditch Is What Brings Us Together Today
oh yeah, it’s a princess bride reference
The Hogwarts Express seems different this time. It's where Scorpius and I say hello on September 1st and goodbye at the end of the school year. I guess this time’s just different because he lived with me for a month during the summer before his dad was deemed fit to live at home again. So there's that. But there's also the familiarity with going to Hogwarts on September 1st on the train that calms my nerves.
I haven't seen him in 3 weeks. Will he have dyed his hair like he did second year? Will he have cut his hair short? I inhale and exhale. Checking the time on my wristwatch I'm surprised when it clicks over to 10:57. Where's Scorpius? He's usually here by now. I look all around the platform, but I don't see any sign of his or his father's unique white-blond hair. I start to panic when the clock ticks to 10:58. Everyone still on the platform is wishing their child goodbye as they usher them onto the train.
Where is he?
I sigh in relief when he comes barreling through the brick wall and onto the station, pushing a trolley with his luggage and Andromeda. He slips past people, rolling his cart faster and faster to get across the platform.
He makes it on with a minute to spare.
I pet Gingersnap in between her ears while waiting for Scorpius to get to the compartment. “You’re so cute, aren’t you?” I press the pad of my finger to Gi’s nose.
The door opens, startling me.
“Hey,” says Scorpius, waving at me awkwardly.
“Hey! How was the rest of your summer?”
He shrugs. “It was alright. We did pretty normal things, like going to the opera.” Weird flex but alright.  He sets Andromeda’s cage down on the seat and unlatches it, letting her fly free around the compartment. She hops out, surveys her surroundings, then flies up to the luggage racks above our heads. She preens her wings, then lets her head rest in between her shoulders. Her body rocks slightly with every movement of the train.I scoff. “I can’t believe she just settles right in like that.”“Yeah,” he looks up at her. “It is pretty unbelievable.” He looks back at me and takes a seat on the red cushioned booth. “Anyway, how was your summer? Did you play any more quidditch with your family?”I smile. “Yes, actually. We went over to Gramma and Grandpa Weasley’s house and we saw everyone right before school, so we had time to play a bunch of quidditch instead of doing any studying.”“Wow.” He raises his eyebrow and teasingly says “You’re getting to be so rebellious. How dare you not like studying all the time?”I laugh. “You actually gonna try out this year? I know you have rebellious tendencies of your own.”Scorpius smirks. “Yep. Seeker. Will I see you there?”I try to remain as nonchalant as possible. “Maybe,” I shrug. I love 4th year Rose.
....
“Join the Quidditch team!” Riley Aberforth, the new Ravenclaw Quidditch captain, stands in the common room, a pile of flyers in zir hands. “Plenty of openings!” One of last years’ beaters walks by, and ze throws a flyer at him and hexes it to stick to his clothes.
I feel a little bad- almost all of our old players graduated last year, and it’s hard to find people willing to juggle Quidditch and studies. “C’mon, Riley, now I’ll never get it off,” The beater complains, trying and failing to pull it off of his robe sleeve.
“That’s the idea,” Ze replies savagely, and he sighs.
“Hey-” Scorpius walks up to zir, scratching the back of his neck. “I was wondering when seeker sign-ups were?”
Aberforth looks immensely relieved. “Two weeks from now,” Ze said, passing a flier to him. “Don’t miss it.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t,” Scorpius says and throws a wink over his shoulder at me.
‘Shut up,’ I mouth at him, and he chuckles as he disappears into the boy’s dormitories.
I watch as Aberforth sticks a flier to the wall with a permanent sticking charm.
Maybe there'll be an easy chaser spot, I think.
I exhale and grip the handle of my broom tighter. Now that I’m here, everything seems exaggerated. I look to the stands at Scorpius. He waves, and I smile awkwardly, waving back. I’m really doing this.
Scorpius had been talking about trying out for seeker since he came over for the summer, but I only decided to try out for the chaser position three days before tryouts. It left me with a bit of a time crunch but, well, too late to worry about that now.
“And… start!” Aberforth throws the quaffle straight up into the air. One of the other chasers gets to it first- she dives and twists up in a move that I, luckily, recognize from years of playing with Albus and his sneaky tricks. I get the ball from her easily, and in a whirl of movement, I’ve already scored.
Aberforth blows zir whistle and looks impressed. “Good job, Weasley!”
I blush, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “It’s nothing, really,” I try to avoid, and ze smirks.
“Precisely,” Ze says, and throws the quaffle in the air once more.
...
It’s my turn.
There are a few assembled people- a blonde girl with bright eyes, a boy with comically oversized glasses- but most notably is Lorcan Scamander, looking completely out of place and practically swimming in his borrowed gear.
“Lorcan?” I ask, bewildered. “What’re you doing here?”
He jumps, then puffs out his chest, glaring. “I have every right to be here as you do,” He says defensively.
“Right, of course,” I say, “It’s just you don’t really seem… the type.” He manages to look even more outraged. “I can fly!”
“Right,” I say.
He finally deflates a little. “I mean, I heard Rosie was trying out, so I figured… why not?”
I blink.
He crosses his arms.
I blink again.
“Right,” I repeat.
He huffs and opens his mouth, clearly readying to lecture me, but luckily, Aberforth blows on zir whistle, and he closes his mouth.
“Alright, everyone know the rules?” Ze calls, and there’s no way ze isn’t using a sonorous charm. Even zir lungs aren’t that big.
Most people nod, but I frown. “No,” I say.
Ze sighs sharply. “Basically, I’m going to release the snitch.” Ze opens zir hand to reveal the snitch, wings fluttering against zir palm. “When someone catches it, my wand will flash- like so.” Ze lets it go, only to catch it out of the air immediately. Zir wand flashes a bright blue light twice. “When you catch it, release it immediately.”
“Okay,” I say.
“Whoever catches it the most times wins,” Ze finishes. “Three… two… one… go!” Ze lets it go, and immediately it takes off, zipping up into the sky and blending into the cloud coverage in the span of a blink.
Everyone scrambles to their brooms, Lorcan nearly falling off, and the game begins.
...
An hour of rigorous gameplay and half an hour of random, unannounced bludger attacks later, the game is over.
The blonde girl comes first with 13 catches.
I come at a close second with 8.
The boy with the glasses is third with 5.
Two angry-looking boys yell at each other in what sounds like French with a tie of 3.
Lorcan catches a grand total of 1.
Disappointed, I go to leave, but Aberforth quickly catches up, grabbing onto the edge of my sleeve. “Hey, Malfoy, wait up.”
I stop and turn to zir. “What?”
“Listen, I know what I said, but I think you have potential,” Ze explains. “Would you like to take a Chaser position alongside Weasley?” When my eyes widen, ze smirks. “Don’t tell her yet, postings aren’t up until after keeper tryouts.”
“Yes, of course,” I exclaim. “Thank you so much!”
“Our secret,” Ze says with a wink, and then ze is gone, jogging back to meet with the winner
When I meet up with Rose, she looks sympathetic. “I’m sorry you didn’t get seeker,” She says.
“Eh,” I say with a shrug and a broad smile. “I think everything’s gonna work out.”
...
Rose zooms across the other side of the field as we both head for the goals. I manage to get near the keeper from Gryffindor who’s tall and burly and looks like he could be better suited as a beater with his large shoulders.
Rose passes the quaffle to me, and I throw it into the hoop.
“It’s only their fourth game of the season and they’re already tearing up the scoreboards-That’s another ten points to Ravenclaw!” I know sports *laughs nervously*
We’re becoming awesome players. Not being able to play with Rose and her family was annoying, but now I actually get to play with her and some of her siblings are on the opposite team.
“It looks like Potter is diving towards something- has he spotted the golden snitch?” Jordan's voice booms across the fields. “Hare is going after it too and it looks like it’s gonna be a close call! Oh, and she pulls up right before hitting the ground-and Potter is down!”
I look down to where he’s crash-landed on the wet grass. He gets up on his broom and flies back up to where we are.
Good move, Hare .
The burly keeper throws the quaffle back into the game, and Rose and I set into motion, me going for the ball and her towards the goal. Finnigan from Gryffindor flies up and sends a bludger right for Rose. I can only see it hurtling towards her before shouting a warning.
“Watch out Rose!”
She ducks, but it still manages to hit her elbow, knocking her even more off balance. “Thanks!” She calls to me. She still has the quaffle held in her good hand. She flips herself right side on her broom and passes it to Aberforth, who scores the goal easily.
The game goes on and on, but it doesn’t drag by at all. The adrenaline keeps me watching every move my team makes and I follow the quaffle with my eyes and broom.
Bordeaux scores a point.
“That’s another 10 points to Ravenclaw, making  it 190-160 Ravenclaw,” says Jordan. “This is a close call for Gryffindor, who has won all of their games for the last 2 years.”
I pass the quaffle to Rose.
“And the game’s over! The Ravenclaw seeker has caught the snitch, ending Gryffindor’s streak. Good job, Alaska Hare and the rest of the Ravenclaw team!”
...
“Good job team!” Aberforth calls from the top of people. Ze’re crowd surfing. The crowd whoops.
“Ravenclaw! Ravenclaw! Ravenclaw!” They chant, and I join in. Adrenaline still rushes through my veins.
Scorpius makes his way over to me, two butterbeers in his hands.”Do you want one?”
I take it. “Thanks.”
“No prob.” He rests his back against the wall, taking a sip of his drink. “They’ve also got some roast beef sandwiches from the kitchens if you want one.”
“Sure. Where?” I look over to him. He has a moustache of foam on his upper lip. I giggle. “You might wanna wipe that off.” I point at it.
He blushes and wipes it off with his sleeve. “Better?”
“Yep. It’s all gone now.”
He sticks his free hand in his jeans pocket. “So, sandwiches?”
I follow him to the corner of the commons room, where people are munching on the food offered at the table. I grab a sandwich, and Scorpius grabs the same, plus an apple.
“Let’s go sit down.” I motion towards the seats. Most of them are occupied, but there’s half of a couch still open. I set my plate and drink on the table, and settle into the soft couch. Scorpius does the same.
“Is it bad that I wish there weren’t as many people celebrating in the commons?” He takes a bite of his apple.
I shrug. “I don’t think so?” We barely see almost the entire house in one place besides the great hall for meals. “It’s weird to have everyone in here.” Especially partying. Everyone either has a drink or food in their hands and are chatting. Though there is one person I can’t seem to find. “Where’s Hare?” I ask.
“Probably enjoying the peace of the library.” He sighs wistfully. mood
Chapter Ten: Christmas At The Weasley’s
I bounce on my heels as I scoop Gingersnap up and stuff her into her container.
“Meoooooooow,” She whines, and I shush her.
“Be quiet, Gi, we’re going home!” I shut the latch on my suitcase and drag both her and the suitcase down into the common room.
Scorpius is sitting by the fire, staring into the crackling flames and not moving.
“You’re staying here again?” I ask. I try not to sound surprised, but he notices. I can tell by the way his shoulders curl up around his shoulders.
“Yep,” He says. “It’s not any different than any other year.”
“You don’t think…” I trail off. It’s not my place. “Right.”
He turns to look at me, and he smiles sadly. “Happy Christmas, Rose,” He says.
I smile back. “Happy Christmas,” I respond.
I would stay with him, but after last year Mum made me promise to come back this Christmas, and even though my parents have warmed up to Scorpius, I don’t want to risk making them resent him.
He turns back to the fire, so I leave without another word.
It feels wrong, but I don’t know what else to say.
I climb up the stairs to the Hogwarts Express and walk into my usual compartment. I close the door and let Gingersnap climb out of her cage and explore the compartment. Satisfied, she curls up on the seat and falls asleep. I buy and eat an entire box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans without too much trouble. ( I got a Vomit, Earwax, and a Boogey flavour). The ride is quiet, but I don’t mind. Silence is better than sharing a compartment with James.
I get off the train and see my family.
“How was Hogwarts?” Ron asks my brother and me.
“It was so great, Dad! I got to see a hippogriff!” Hugo says excitedly.
“It was fun!” I say. “I joined the quidditch team and Scorpius, Bordeaux and I were scoring a bunch of points, and our seeker, Alaska Hare, is really good. Like really good.”
“I’m gonna join the quidditch team when I get older!” Hugo announces proudly.
“I look forward to beating my little brother.” I tease.
He sticks his tongue out at me.
“I’m glad you two had fun.” Mum rolls her eyes and picks up my trunk. “Come on,” She says and leaves. I follow her to the car. On the way there, I see Mr. Malfoy looking hopefully at the Hogwarts Express. Why I wonder, is he waiting for someone who will never come? He waits for Scorpius every year. Hopeful, but deep down, knowing the truth. Why I wonder, avoid your family like fire?
When I get home, the whole family is there for Christmas Eve. Uncle George and Aunt Angelina, with Roxanne and Fred II. Gramma Molly and Grandpa Arthur, Uncle Percy and  Aunt Audrey, with Molly and Lucy, Uncle Bill and Aunt Fleur, with Dominique and Louis, Uncle Harry and Aunt Ginny, with James, Albus, and Lily. Victoire and Teddy also show up together. Hagrid is there, too, and Professor Longbottom.
“Happy Christmas, Rose,’’ Professor Longbottom says, and then he has to leave. Hagrid drops off his presents and then is on his way, and then the place goes into chaos. The only other children besides me that aren’t crazy are Victoire and Teddy, and they’re technically not ‘children’, both being 18. James, Dominique, Louis, Hugo, Roxanne, and Fred II all run off to play Quidditch, and Lily, Molly, and Lucy all group up and giggle about things, while Albus sits quietly on an armchair. “Albus!” I wave at him. He gets up and wanders over to me.
“Did you hear,” he says, and then starts ranting about the wonders of unicorns. I smile and nod, but I’m not listening; I’m wondering what Scorpius is doing, alone at Hogwarts without his family.
Soon we are all crowded into the kitchen and living room for dinner. In the summer we always eat outside, but since it’s the Christmas holidays we’re all inside enjoying the warmth. There’s a strong chorus of “Can you please pass the potatoes?” and “Is that turkey? I’ll have some of that, please!” throughout the kitchen. I relax when I step into the quiet living room. At least, quiet compared to the kitchen. You can still hear everyone in the kitchen talking to each other as they pile food onto their plates. I flop onto the couch, careful not to spill my food onto the floor. Soon enough everybody starts walking into the living room.
After everyone eats, it’s Hugo, Victoire, Teddy, and I’s job to put away the food and do the dishes the muggle way. This leaves my prankster of a cousin free to do whatever he pleases.
I hear a very familiar sounding song being sung by James and I pale. “SCORPIUS AND ROSIE, SITTING IN A TREE, K-I-S-S-I-N-G! FIRST COMES LOVE, THEN COMES MARRIAGE, THEN COMES THE BABY IN A BABY CARRIAGE!” He bellows.
“Sorry guys, I have to go!” I tell my brother, Victoire, and Teddy. I run up the stairs into the room I’m sharing with Lily and lock the door behind me.
I need to focus, I tell myself. Focus. Focus. Focus.
I take a deep breath in, then exhale. My mind is still racing, but at least my heart has slowed.
I lift one of the floorboards up to reveal a box. I open it and see all the pictures I’ve taken. I look through one pile of Scorpius and I, too angry with James and too embarrassed of what he might have told everyone else to bother looking through the family pictures, look through my pictures of Scorpius instead. My favourite picture of us is when we were on the roof. I bring my camera everywhere, I think, amused. I fall into a fitful sleep, skipping dessert entirely.
I momentarily forget about my anger with James on Christmas morning. I rush down the long flight of stairs from Lily and I’s room into the family room and start emptying my stocking. All the kids are already there, munching on Saint Nick’s leftover cookies. I brush past them, staring at the mound of presents underneath the tree. I sigh as I see a small box under the tree with my name on it from Gramma Molly. That can only mean one thing. Sweaters. Sure enough, a navy sweater with an R on it is in that box and I put it on, for now, vowing to never wear it again after this day.
I spend the day mostly happy, (as long as I steer clear of James), preferring to spend my time with Albus (who I am quite fond of) and take pictures.
“Maybe you could be a photographer for the Daily Prophet one day Rosie,” Lily suggests, “Since you love taking pictures so much.”
“Maybe,” I reply.
Too soon, or perhaps not soon enough, it is time to return to school.
“Good-bye Rosie, see you after schools’ up!” Mum calls after me as I board the Hogwarts Express.
“Bye, Mum,” I say, rolling my eyes to myself.
I get off the Hogwarts Express without my luggage or Gingersnap, trusting the house elves to take care of them.
I smile as I see Scorpius running towards me from school.
“I was looking everywhere for you!” He says when he catches up to me.
“Why?” I ask.
He takes a deep breath and asks, “If 120-X = 3 times 4, then what is X?” Why can’t I be doing this kind of math in school right now
I burst out laughing. “You ran all the way out HERE to ask me a question about homework?!”
“Yeah,” Scorpius says, looking confused, still panting slightly from running. “Why wouldn't I?”
“Nevermind. What class is this for? Arithmancy?”
“Yep!.”
“Huh,” I say. I didn’t know he took that class.
“Yeah.”
I rack my brains for the answer (I’m out of practice!) and say “It’s negative one hundred eight.”
“Thanks,” he says. He runs his left hand through his hair, and it sticks up. I take a step towards him and flatten it. He looks up at me and opens his mouth to speak. “Hey, um. Do you want to hang out sometime?”
I allow myself a small smile and say jokingly “Don’t we already hang out?” He looks heartbroken. My hand, which is at my side seems to have a mind of its own. It reaches for his hair and I run my fingers through it, successfully messing it up again.. I take a step closer to him and lift his chin up so that his eyes meet mine. “Scorpius,” I say. I hear a crash from the woods, but don’t turn my head. It’s probably just Grawp having another tantrum. Sometimes I wonder why they let him teach. I hear the rustling of the leaves and students’  voices carrying across the lawn.
Wait, there’s no wind. I think, why would the leaves be rustling? Scorpius stiffens, his eyes full of alarm. I turn around and see a beast. It’s lean and almost hairless. It growls.
“Run,” I say. And we do as if a werewolf is right on our heels. So subtle.
Scorpius trips in front of me and we both go flying. I’m breathing heavily now, adrenaline is rushing through my body and I feel as if we’re being watched. Oh, how I wish I was safe inside the Ravenclaw common room, snuggling with a book in my favourite armchair.
I hear panting, and at first, I think it’s Scorpius, but these breaths sound more… dog-ish. I look five feet to my right and see the beast. It’s sharp canines protrude from its mouth, saliva drips onto the grass and I identify it. Werewolf.
I put my hand in my pocket, searching for my wand. It’s not there. I left it in my dormitory. I mentally bang my head. Stupid, stupid, stupid…Scorpius is lying beside me, barely conscious. “Give me your wand.” I hiss at him. He doesn’t respond. I frantically search through his robes. “Where is it?!? Where did you put your wand?!?” I finally find it and raise it to where the werewolf was standing. It’s gone.
I wake Scorpius enough that he can lean on my shoulder and walk. I lead him to the Infirmary where Miss Moone hovers over us,  warning us to be careful and such things. She starts ranting as she grabs a bottle, but I focus on Scorpius’s face, zoning out.
I sit in a daze by Scorpius’s bed for hours, longer than Miss Moone would usually let a visitor stay, but I sensed that she took pity on me as it is no secret how close Scorpius and I are close. Please excuse the poor grammar. We are but poor grammar nerds who did not notice this when writing or editing.
Eventually, she shoo’s me off, insisting that I need to sleep, and I return to my bunk, although I do anything but sleep. Instead, I stare at the wall, Scorpius's unconscious form flashing through my brain every time I close my eyes.
The sun’s pink rays scrape the sky as I walk out of the dormitory. I sneak down the halls to the Infirmary.  Once I see him lying in the bed I feel the adrenaline fade and I feel as if I am made of lead. I sit in the chair beside his bed and feel my eyes droop.
I am woken by someone shaking me.  “Rose Weasley, GET UP!!!” I turn my head and find Miss Moone’s face three inches from mine.
“Huh?” I say groggily (I never was a morning person).
“You’re going to miss your classes.” My face remains emotionless. “It’s already half past nine. Get up!”
“It’s Saturday. Leave me alone.” Rose is making this up, or is confused. don’t 2 her And she does. But not after protesting a little bit more. I am left in the clean, cold silence. I find a blanket and fall asleep again.
Chapter Eleven: Hogsmeade
I love this chapter
A few days later everything goes back to normal, or as normal as things can be when you see a werewolf. Scorpius gets out of the infirmary and we celebrate by finishing the boatload of homework we both have.
As we work on our Transfiguration homework Scorpius says “Miss Moone said you were at my bed night  and day.”
I blush a little, then nod. I haven’t done much talking the last few days, and I think Scorpius is starting to worry. I can’t stop thinking about that werewolf. Hogwarts is supposed to be protected from them.
Scorpius waves his hand in front of my face. “Hello? Anybody in there?”
I nod. He doesn’t accept my answer, so I say “Yeah, I’m here.” I look at his eyes which today are more blue than grey. I smile, thinking of that night on the roof…
“Hello. Earth to Rose!” Scorpius says, snaking his fingers in front of my face.
“Huh?” I snap back to reality. “Sorry. I got distracted.”
“Obviously.” He snorts.
I smile at him and turn back to my homework.
“Night and day,” Scorpius repeats.
“Yes! Night and day! Now can you focus?” I snap.
He grins devilishly. “Hm. I don't think I want to.”
“Ugh.” I lay my head on the table. “We're not getting any homework done tonight, are we?” I groan.
“Now, why would you think that?” He says, feigning innocence.
I grin. “Oh, I don't know.”
He grins back. “Hogsmeade?”
“Tonight?” I ask.
“Yep.”
“Like, right now?”
“Yep.”
I sigh heavily. “Oh, why not?”
Scorpius laughs. “Exactly my point.”
He grabs his forest green messenger bag from the back of his chair. We sneak out through the passage behind the one-eyed witch, using the invisibility cloak to shield us from prying eyes and to make sure Miss Cod doesn’t catch us.
I grudgingly follow him out of Hogwarts and into Hogsmeade. I wrap my jacket close to my body in the freezing tunnel. Before opening the trap door in Honeydukes we make sure that nobody’s there. No footsteps can be heard. Peeking up we see the light on, but nobody seems to be in the room. Quietly, we make our way upstairs, invisible.
We slip past the worker and the counter. We make our way out of Honeydukes and down the block before entering the Three Broomsticks. Before we do so we take off the Invisibility Cloak and put it in his bag, brushing the snow off of it.
We buy two butterbeers and I lead us to a booth as far away from the door as possible. We each take a seat, Scorpius sliding across the table from me. Peculiar. I lean my back against the wall and stretch my legs across the seat. He remains sitting up in a more formal position, and I frown a little. It's unlike him to be so formal. Usually, he's the one to stretch out first. He rolls his glass in between his hands, something he doesn’t usually do unless he’s nervous. ;)
I sit forward, his nervousness making me nervous. “What is it?” I demand.
“What?” He asks, setting his butterbeer down and reddening a little. ;)
I narrow my eyes at him suspiciously and sit back.
He opens his mouth, then closes it again, a look of wistfulness in his eyes. ;)
“What?!” I demand.
“I- it's nothing!” He says defensively.
“I’ve known you for four years and you expect me to think it’s nothing?”
“Well- well, there's this- well, it's- well,”
“Oh my god. Spill!” I say, leaning forward again.
“Well, “ he grins sheepishly at me as I glare at him. “It's- it's. There’s a girl.”
“WHAT?!” I yell and the few people in the Three Broomsticks looks at me like I’m crazy.
“Stop making this harder for me!” He whines.
“Fine.” I glare at him and sit back. “Go on.”
“You see, this girl, well-” he clears his throat.“I kinda like her.” He looks down at the table, blushing profusely.
“Oh.” Inside I  feel like a deflated balloon, but I try to hide it. “What's her name?”
“Well,” Scorpius says blushing even more than he already was, “she's- she's- well- her name is Rose,” He doesn’t look up at me.
“Me?” I ask. I feel as if all the wind has been knocked out of me. I can’t even breathe, let alone talk. I open and close my mouth, probably looking like a fish while Scorpius rubs the back of his neck awkwardly. We love reoccuring themes.  At last, I regain my breath. “Yes.”He looks up at me, confused. “What?”I smile at him. “Yes, I’ll go out with you.”He blushes even more and downs his butterbeer in one gulp. “Want some more?” He asks, pointing at my half-empty glass. I nod. We stay there for an hour or two more, dancing around us now dating. When we finally leave the light has faded from the sky and only a hint of the purple is left. The night air is cold against my face and my hair whips at me. I can’t seem to keep a smile off my face as I walk next to Scorpius. He carefully clasps his hand in mine and I let him. We walk side by side back to Hogwarts through the tunnel, holding hands. #awkward
I grin as I lay in bed, unable to sleep. The feeling of giddiness is overwhelming me. I can't believe it! He asked me out!!! Well, sort of. But it still counts! My only problem in the whole world is how Dad will feel.
I sit up in bed, suddenly worried. How will he feel? Will he throw a fit again? Will he not care? Will he be happy for me?! How will my friends feel? How will Mum feel? How will anyone feel?? Will everyone hate me? Will they think less of me? Will they be disappointed and tell me I can do better?
Stop it, I chide myself. It’ll be fine.
With that thought, I slowly drift into a dreamless sleep.
“Hey,” Scorpius says as I walk down the hall towards Divination, “Meet me in the library during lunch.”
“Okay. Bye babe,” I say teasingly. He blushes and waves, darting away, in the wrong direction. I laugh. “It's a miracle that boy hasn't gotten lost already,” I say to myself.
“Who?” A voice says to my left. I whirl in that direction and see a girl with auburn hair and huge green eyes walking next to me.
“Oh. Just my friend.” I say with a small smile.
“That boy with the blonde hair?” She asks.
“Yes,” I say carefully. I glance at her robes. Weird. Ravenclaw. Why don't I know her? “What year are you in?”
“Oh, I'm in fourth. I just like to keep to myself.” She says, nodding. I notice that she has a copy of the Quibbler in her hands, a magazine written by my friend’s mum Luna Scamander about all sorts of crazy stuff.
“Oh. Okay,” I say as we arrive in divination. I sit at a desk, grab some parchment, and stare at the clock.
All too soon, class is over and I am thrown into the craziness that is pre-lunch hallways. If you thought Muggle school was bad before lunch, try going to a magic school with levels and 142 staircases that move around on their own accord. It's horrible, but I manage to shove and push my way through the crowd to the library.
Chapter Twelve: Strange Conversations
I sit at a table in the library, surrounded by books. Where is she? I wonder.
Finally, the library door swings open, revealing Rose, her face flushed. I catch a glimpse of the huge crowds swarming outside of the library. She slams the door shut and takes a deep breath, adjusting her robes and smoothing out her frizzy hair. She glances around the library before noticing me with a small smile.
“Hey,” she says, sliding into a chair across from me. Her eyes scan the books stacked on the table and pulls one off the top.
“A History of Magic ?” she reads aloud.
“Homework,” I say, and she sets it down, nodding.
“So is this like… a date?” she asks.
“Yeah. Sort of,” I say, feeling heat rise into my cheeks.
“Okay,” she says slowly.
“Okay,” I say back.
She grins at me, setting her elbows on the table and resting her chin on her fists. “So.”
“So,” I repeat.
“Homework,” she says, playfully raising an eyebrow at me.
“Yes, right,” I say, looking down at my parchment. I’m supposed to be summarizing A History Of Magic, but I can't help but glance up at Rose as I write, watching as her hair slips from behind her ear and in front of her eyes, blocking them from view.
She reaches up and tucks her hair back, keeping it up with a hair clip she seemingly pulled from thin air. Her brow furrows as she works on her potions homework, chewing on her thumbnail absentmindedly.
I return my focus to my homework, refreshing my ink and continuing to write. A librarian walks by, smiling down on us as she restocks the shelves. I try to ignore her but it's hard not to as she openly watches us, her eyes feeling like needles on my back.
“Is it just me or is that librarian staring at us?” Rose whispers to me.
“She is definitely staring at us,” I agree.
We both glance up at the librarian, who suddenly is out of books and hurries off.
I grin at Rose, who giggles slightly. She checks her watch then sits up with a start.
“Oh no! We’re going to be late for class!” She says, gathering up her parchment and ink and stuffing them into her side bag.
...
We rush into Potions a few minutes late, with a disapproving look from Professor Engleman. “Ten points from Ravenclaw for tardiness,” he says.
I wince. “He always had a thing against being late,” I whisper to Scorpius, who nods.
When I look at him, I feel a bubble of happiness grow inside me as I realize, for the second time that day, that he asked me out, and that we’re dating.  No, you asked him out.
He gives me a smile, the corner of his lip turning up, before turning back to our empty cauldron.
On the board reads the instructions for brewing Veritaserum, the truth potion. “Get along with it then,” Professor Engleman says, waving at us with his hand.
“I wonder if Professor Engleman would notice if I slipped some into his drink,” Scorpius whispers to me, nodding at the flask Professor Englman is drinking from.
I giggle quietly, which Professor Engleman hears.
“No talking while brewing!” he snaps. “This should be where 100% of your attention is,” he hisses, pointing at my cauldron. “Five points from Ravenclaw.”
After we brew the potion, Professor Engleman assigns us homework, an essay about Veritaserum.
“I hate Engleman's strict rules!” I groan as we exit the class.
“Yes. I agree that they are quite extreme,” a voice says from behind us.
I turn around to see who it is. “Oh, hey Alaska.” I wave at her. She smiles back. Lorcan’s standing next to her, his hands shoved into his pockets, and a scowl on his face. I choose to ignore him. The arse.  This made me laugh.
“You ready for the next game?” Alaska asks. She’s always kind of quiet, especially when playing quidditch, but it seems to be the only thing she’ll willingly talk about.
“Only if you are.” I snap my fingers and point finger guns at her.
She laughs, her head leaned back for a harsh bark of a laugh. ”I hope so.”
I smile nervously and look back to where Lorcan is. I find him glaring at Scorpius, and I’m eager to knock him over the head with one of my books and tell him to knock it off. I suffice for kicking my leg out behind me and hitting him in the shin.
Lorcan quickly turns back to me with a forced smile. “Anyway, Alaska and I have to go. Come on!” he says, grabbing her hand and pulling her away towards the courtyard.
She looks bewildered. “But-”
“No, no, we'll be late for class!” He says with forced cheer.
“I wonder what that was about,” Scorpius says.
“Yeah,” I agree. “I wonder.” I hate Lorcan ngl

Scorpius’ first thought: of course she’s beautiful.
With one hand holding the still-cold metal doorknob and the other his fast-beating heart, Scorpius stood in the doorway of his dorm room stuck in an unrealized inhale.  Because ten feet away from him, on the edge of his barely-made bed, was Albus.  Albus, with one hand holding “her” face and the other a combination of blue bunched-up bedsheets and blankets.  Though the obviousness of what they were doing hit Scorpius into stillness, he felt as though he was sinking down into the ground at the same time, far into that hardwood floor, as if the capacity to hold himself up was no longer something he acquired.
Perhaps that’s why he tripped forwards: the lack of bodily control.  And suddenly, his body fell into the threshold, shoes scuffing across the floor and catching the attention of Albus and the beautiful girl.  Once Scorpius looked up from his now-stable feet, he met their faces for the first time.  Their lips were on the brink of purpleness and for a moment that sent a shockwave down his spine, Scorpius wondered how long they had been at this, if it was so good that they would have continued with Scorpius’ body in the doorframe if his arrival hadn’t been so unceremoniously announced.
The glances he was given were completely opposing.  The girl was scowling at Scorpius, etching sharp lines in her face that seemed misplaced on the roundness of her cheeks, the wideness of her eyes.  It terrified Scorpius still.  But not nearly as much as the deep sadness Albus looked at him with, as if Scorpius had disappointed him greatly by not realizing what was going on even before he knew.
Scorpius didn’t know if he would have preferred knowing earlier, though.  He pictured himself in the spot in the library where he was previously, desperately attempting to shove sentences of textbooks into his brain as to distract it from what was going on.  In this daydream he saw himself tapping his foot relentlessly, tearing his hands through his hair, slipping into the dangerous hypotheticals of what they were doing.  In this daydream, he only lasted a good fifteen minutes before he came barging in with some lame excuse—constructed entirely out of selfishness—of why Albus had to stop kissing her immediately and flee the scene.
Maybe it was better to stumble in on it.
The girl’s response made him think otherwise.
“Uh, excuse me,” she scoffed.  “We’re in the middle of something.  Close the door.”
Scorpius just gripped the handle tighter, his jaw emulating the squeezing action by clenching teeth against teeth.  “So, I guess this is your room now?” he asked her, pouring all of the sarcasm he could into the question.
Her eyebrows raised while looking around the cluttered bedroom, as if she was actually considering what it would be like to live amongst Albus’ unorganized shoes and the faint yet ever-present smell of cologne and tea.  But her eyes settled back on Scorpius as she responded, “What do you mean?”
“Well, considering you’re giving me orders on how to behave and what to do, I guess this is your room then, right?”
“Scorpius— ” Albus butted in, but the girl kept speaking over him.  In the resulted powerlessness, Scorpius risked a glance in his direction.  Albus still looked thoroughly miserable (and miserably handsome, so Scorpius kept looking at him because he couldn’t stop himself).
Therefore, all he heard was the last few sentences of the girls’ argument.  “Plus,” she said, in that over-enthusiastic way people do when they get new ideas to tack on to an old one, “Albus is your roommate.  He has just as much say as to what goes on in here as you do.”
Responding to her point, but not to her—he was still looking into Albus’ green eyes, putting all his effort into not getting lost in them—Scorpius asked,“So I guess you can do just anything you want in here, then, Al?  Regardless of how it affects your roommates?”
As if he knew he didn’t have much time, Albus blurted out, “I didn’t think you’d be back.”  But it was said like an accident, an afterthought, with pouted lips and a soft tone.  Almost apologetically, but, after years of being best friends with him, Scorpius knew it wasn’t exactly not knowing Scorpius’ schedule that Albus was apologizing for.  It was something different and he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
But Albus’ were still awkwardly dangling on the girl’s arm, keeping Scorpius’ glare ever-present, his face red as apples.  Albus kept glancing between his fingers and Scorpius: a silent questioning of, “Is this okay?”  Even though he knew the answer, but not the reason.  Scorpius would rather endure a Crutiartus curse than tell his best friend, his only friend, that for upwards of a year he had been craving for something more.
Hence the anger.  The anger that wasn’t anger at Albus for kissing someone else, but at himself for never being good enough to be on the receiving end.  And just at the thought of it, his chapped lips burned.  If only he was the one getting Albus’ lips to that purpley-blue, getting to coax them open and bite them and press his own against them.
“Well I am back,” Scorpius stupidly retorted, feeling foolish but powerful as Albus frowned further.  “So are you going to let me have my room back, or are you going to make me leave again?”
Scorpius didn’t realize his heart could hurt more than it did when he opened the door on this mess.  But when Albus’ open mouth didn't speak another word, Scorpius had to grip even tighter on the doorknob to keep his torso upright from the force of his heart’s aching.
Trying to appear unaffected, Scorpius cleared his throat aggressively.  “I see,” he noted, forcing as much disappointment into the words as he could muster before turning around and closing the door behind him, trapping Albus’ call of his name behind the wooden slab.
He wouldn’t turn back.  And he wouldn’t wait up.
So Scorpius started darting down to anywhere else, dodging students passing through the common room, some looking concerned and others looking amused.  A few cruel comments were called out from behind him, but nothing could hurt him more than seeing Albus with someone else, than Albus not caring that he had seen, than Scorpius blaming his best friend for something so obviously his own fault.  Albus didn’t have control over the fact no one else wanted to befriend Scorpius; or that no one could make Scorpius laugh as hard, as often; or that Albus was so irresistible without realizing, like how he woke up curly hair in uneven tangles and smile so lazily warm it made Albus feel as though he was being dipped in sunshine.  And his voice was deeper then, coarser, but never callous.  Whenever he spoke in the morning, it caught Scorpius off guard, and he almost dropped what he was carrying or tripped over his feet.
Albus was just Albus.  It wasn’t his fault he was everything to Scorpius.  It wasn’t his fault that Scorpius was in love with him.
Scorpius froze at the realization, stumbling out of his running.  His lungs were dry and heaving and he wished he hadn’t had ran or argued or left Albus’ call of his name hanging in the air to no avail.  For months he made sure Albus couldn’t suspect the truth; he shoved every piece of evidence deep inside of him so Albus wouldn’t tease him about being jittery or notice the elementary sketches of initials in hearts he scratched into parchment corners.  So how was Albus to know what kissing some random bird meant?  How was he to realize what he meant to Scorpius if Scorpius was doing everything in his power to keep Albus from knowing just that?
“Fuck,” Scorpius whispered.  For the briefest of moments, he watched his breath turn white in the air, transfixed out of not wanting to drown in guilt, before he fell forwards.  He stumbled into the fluffy snow of the Divination courtyard, almost landing on his hands from the thickness of it.  Scorpius almost laughed at the fact the “fuck,” he let out seconds earlier now seemed like a precursor as opposed to a reaction.
But he didn’t have time when, from behind him, he heard a voice unmistakably belonging to Albus spit out the same word, making him freeze once more.
“Shit!  I didn’t mean… I should have stopped running earlier.”
Scorpius turned around, the motion full of tentativeness and apprehension.  He was met with just as much from Albus, who stood with a head tilted downwards, shifting gaze, and hand on the back of his head.
Years ago, in a makeshift pillowfort the two had spent far too long on considering its finalized appearance, Albus and Scorpius had sworn to always be frank with one another.  “Not telling no secrets,” Albus had said, as if he knew what was to come, the way he would grow to hold Scorpius’ heart unlike anyone else.  “Just, like, if something is bothering one of us about the other person, or there’s something we have to say, we don’t take offense.  Got it?”
Scorpius had nodded his head, and, in this moment, he was happy he had, as it gave him the permission to bluntly ask, “Why are you nervous?  I was the one being the asshole.”
Like the snow they stood on would in the spring, Albus’ expression of grief melted, replacing his frown with a small smile.  He even looked up at Scorpius; those green eyes effectively destroyed every ounce of Scorpius’ composure within milliseconds.
“Really?” Albus asked.  Everything about him was unsure.
“Yes.  I overreacted.  I’m… I’m really sorry about it, Albus.  It’s just,”—“not telling no secrets”—“I had a really long day.  It’s not about you.  You didn’t do anything wrong.”
As if the soft, “oh,” Albus responded with wasn’t enough of an indicator, his focus was down and his feet kicking at the snow, emphasizing his displeasure with the explanation.
Besides himself, Scorpius felt his anger returning.   “What?  Did you want it to be about you?” he spat out.  If it weren’t for his coldness this morning, the sharpness of his voice would have surprised him.
But not as much as the defeated, “Yeah,” Albus directed towards the ground.
Like a balloon that was just untied and hissing out oxygen, Scorpius felt all of the madness flush out of his body instantaneously.  Every part of him that used to hold rage was filled with shock instead and the world felt wrong.
“What?”  Scorpius could feel how scrunched his face was in confusion, how it almost looked appalled as a consequence.
“It should be about me,” Albus continued to the ground, as if he was talking to himself.  “I knew you were coming back.  You told me this morning.”  In a flash Scorpius recollected their conversation, recollecting more of Albus deep morning voice than what he said when using it, making his memory fuzzy; Scorpius shook his head side to side in an attempt of clarity.
“I… I don’t remember mentioning that.”  For some reason, Scorpius’ throat suddenly felt dry.
“Well, you did.  And I… I fucking knew, okay?  And I’m sorry.”
Albus still wasn’t looking up, was still directing his gestures towards the ground, so Scorpius let his face fall into a frown and pressed on Albus slightly.  “It’s okay,” he reassured.  “I’m not that mad, I swear.”
“But you should be.”  Albus’ breathing was ragged, and Scorpius knew it wasn’t from the running, but how much energy what he was saying took out of him.  So Scorpius kept quiet, fiddling with the edge of his jacket nervously, afraid of why Albus was so adamant to take the blame.  So for a moment, all that was heard over the high howls of winter wind were Scorpius’ coat’s fabric rustling and Albus’ heavy breaths.  Even Scorpius’ heartbeat was muffled, because, for some reason not apparent to Scorpius, Albus’ eyes had flicked back up, causing Scorpius’ heart to stop moving altogether.
All until Albus broke the silence he had began.  “I knew.  I planned it so you’d walk in on us kissing.”
“Why?” Scorpius asked so quickly, the question beat the confused expression which fell across his face.
“I wanted to see if I cared.  If you cared.  If I cared whether or not you cared.”  Albus was letting his eyes flutter around in nervousness, never landing on Scorpius as he spoke, so Scorpius didn’t expect him to see the confusion from the last question still residing in his expression.  Therefore, he stayed silent, waiting for those wandering eyes to land on his face once more and see the questions he wasn’t vocalizing.  So Albus kept going once his eyes saw what Scorpius had left for him.
But this time, he sounded less confident and less icy from that composure.  It seemed as though something got lodged deep in his throat.  “You see, I thought… I thought, well, really, I was looking back at the past to see how I felt, so I concluded, I suppose, that I, uh, have a crush on you.”  As if they weren’t already rosy from the chill, Scorpius felt all the heat in his body rise to his cheeks, reddening them further, he was certain.  He glanced over at Albus with a gawked expression but, as was usual for Albus in that conversation, his focus was elsewhere.  There was never a time Scorpius could remember wanting Albus’ eyes on him as much as he craved them now.
“But I never really felt like that towards someone before,” he continued, voice still full of uncertainty.  “So I had to test it, of course.  I kissed a couple of birds, a couple of blokes,”—Scorpius, for the first time, allowed his face to fall as Albus spoke of kissing other people—“but it still… it wasn’t enough.  But I still didn’t think I liked you in that way.  So I supposed it was jealousy or something.  I don’t know.  I guess I thought I wanted to prove that I could get someone.”
“You can have anyone you want,” Scorpius blurted out.  It was a truth he had withheld for Merlin knows how long, how he felt no one could be compared with Albus or his smile or sense of humor or way of making the world seem brighter.  “And you got her.”
Albus was shaking his head.  “She’s… she’s no one.”
Remembering her beautiful face, deep eyes, long lashes, Scorpius retorted, “She’s someone.”
“She’s not you.”
Scorpius thought Albus’ torso jamming into his back was the maximum force Albus held that could make Scorpius feel the unbalanced.  But as that statement faded into nothing in the air but everything in Scorpius’ heart, he felt his knees buckle slightly, his ribcage contract.  The weight of Albus’ words were enough to make him melt.
What was worse—or, perhaps, better, if it weren’t for the fact his words kept making Scorpius feel faint—was that Albus kept going.  “I was wrong, Scorpius,” he said, tearing his hands through his unruly hair.  “It wasn’t about making you jealous of me, but jealous of her.  So I ran after you because… because I’m so tired.  I’m so tired of pretending you don’t mean as much to me as you do.  I can’t keep kissing strangers and pretending that they’re you.”
He was unsure of where the sudden bolt of sympathy came from, but Scorpius found himself asking, “Does she know?”
Albus’ eyes darted upwards, cold and confused at first, but turning softer the longer they looked at Scorpius’ face.  Scorpius guessed Albus was trying to wage exactly how defensive he needed to be.  But, Scorpius focused on keeping his expression more doubtful than accusatory and watched it work as Albus’ glare disintegrated.
“Yes,” he admitted.  “Of course.  I explained myself right after you left.  It was short and terrible, but I wouldn’t have come after you otherwise.”
“Good…” Scorpius nodded, focus drifting off to nowhere in particular.  A lump began rising in his throat, one he could not seem to push down, because, suddenly, the air between he and Albus was charged.  There was tangible energy between the two of them, and Scorpius wasn’t sure how to take the lead, now that Albus had spoken his truths.  There was no smooth and suave way to reciprocate.  No way Scorpius could conjure that wouldn’t make him seem like a pathetic, lovesick mess and be sure to scare Albus away before something even began.
Apparently, he had been quiet for longer than he had realized, or looked even more dazed than he felt, because when Albus whispered out his name, the utterance full of concern and fear.  Yet it still remained so soft.
So, this time, it was Scorpius who looked up, whose eyes had to rise to meet Albus’.  Against the whiteness which covered every tree, bush, rock, archway of their backdrop, they looked even greener than usual.  For the first time, Scorpius indulged himself in the act, not looking at Albus’ eyes but into them.  If it weren’t for the fact the December chill could turn anyone’s face red—and that, even though it was after Albus admitted his feelings, Scorpius still felt as though he didn't have the capacity to make anyone blush under any circumstances—Scorpius may have let himself believe it was his attention that caused Albus’ face to flush.
“Sorry,” Scorpius muttered.  He wanted to continue with, “your eyes are just really beautiful,” but decided against it, knowing Albus felt as though they were of his father’s ownership more than his own.  Instead, he shook his head side to side to try and refocus.  Nothing he could say felt adequate enough, yet Albus’ lips had turned upwards into a smirk, as if Scorpius was taking things far too seriously.
So the, “It’s okay,” Albus responded with was more of a chuckle than an apology.  “I’m just assuming that you’re stalling to try and find a way to let me down easy.”  He was still smiling, somehow, and it made Scorpius’ stomach turn in on itself.  “But don’t worry.  I’ll still be your friend.”
“No.”
Scorpius surprised himself in the delivery; it was sharp rather than desperate, and would have been too aggressive if not for the involuntary swinging of his arm towards Albus’ chest, begging for his presence (somewhere deep within, Scorpius knew the previous dialogue was an attempt at an outro, but Scorpius wasn’t finished yet).
The motion caught Albus’ attention.  He glanced down at Scorpius’ hand, considering the fingers stretched flatly against his coat’s chest pocket, before resurfacing with scrunched eyebrows and an almost-frown on his mouth.  Scorpius found himself wanting to kiss that scowl off of Albus’ lips; he swallowed down the craving until he realized he no longer had to.  The epiphany made his body buzz, his knees weaken, his heart stop yet beat even faster at the same time.
Because he wasn’t sure when it began exactly, the desperation for Albus.  He assumed the fuzziness in memory was due to the fact they only had one another—or, more honestly, Scorpius only had Albus—turning their friendship into a kind of necessity which easily covered up the underlying romantic feelings Scorpius developed.  But when it hit him, it felt more intense than falling off of a broomstick from thousands of meters in the air, headfirst.  He was thinking of Albus in class and while he was talking to someone else and before falling into sleep and while sleeping.  Albus consumed Scorpius’ mind during times when Scorpius didn’t even notice he was thinking; during walks from the bathroom back to class, packing up his parchment and quill, making his bed.  Yet, even with the shape of his face and sound of his laughter ever-present in his mind, Scorpius found himself yearning for Albus’ presence.  Scorpius wanted Albus around longer, body closer to his.  Close enough to “accidentally” brush hand against hand or shoulder against shoulder.  Just enough to make Scorpius realize how truly alive his best friend was.
He wasn’t sure when it began exactly, but Scorpius assumed he’d either die in the attempt at love, or due to the pain of it.  When he imagined his future, Albus was never an option as much as a pipe dream.  If he had other friends, Scorpius would have been embarrassed to tell them his feelings, not because they were directed at Albus but because they felt that impossible to be realized.
So he wasn’t quite sure to do with himself with a hand resting on Albus’ chest and the entire English language at his disposal, broad yet lacking in words to describe how he felt.
Scorpius settled with reusing the same expression.  “No,” he repeated, letting his head dip down in unnecessary shyness, “I… I don’t want to be your friend.  I want to be your boyfriend.”  He felt his fingers start slipping down slightly, and his voice was shakier as he said, “It’s all I’ve wanted for so long, Albus.  I can’t even remember when it started.”
“You’re trembling,” Albus muttered, voice overlapping the fading of Scorpius’.  Yet it was delivered almost just as softly, quietly, like he hadn’t meant to say it.  But the way Albus reached his fingers up to catch Scorpius’ falling ones convinced Scorpius otherwise.
It was only in watching that action take place that Scorpius saw his fingers shake.
“Sorry.”  Scorpius’ blush was so strong, he felt the warmth of his cheeks regardless of the winter chill.  “It’s just… I don’t even know how long I’ve been bottling this all in.  It’s a lot to finally say it out loud.  To even be able to.”
Albus took hold of Scorpius’ wrist, looping his fingers around it loosely.  “Come here,” he whispered, and Scorpius let his body do what it had been desiring for years: fall into Albus’.  His forehead dipped down into Albus’ chest and both of his hands cradled Albus’ back, forcing Albus to let go of the very wrist that had led them into this position.
But, if Ablus’ words were any indication, he didn’t mind the release at all.  Instead, with his own palms across Scorpius’ back, lips brushing against his ear, Albus’ murmured one more apology into his ear.  Even though it was the most simple one, most quiet one, most indirect one, it still washed over Scorpius’ body with a power unlike the, “I’m sorry,” screamed at him earlier.  Scorpius felt absolutely defenseless against the tenderness, the vulnerability.  He allowed his head to roll to the side and rest against Albus.
For a moment, all Scorpius could hear were the deep beats of Albus’ heart in his chest; sometimes, a gust of wind would whistle intensely enough to be noticeable, but that was the only other sound recognizable.  And it was more than enough.
Albus was the first to move.  He took the smallest of steps back—just to get my attention, Scorpius assumed, not to get away from me—prompting Scorpius to look up.  Perhaps it shouldn’t have taken him by surprise, but when Scorpius’ eyes met Albus’, his heart fluttered at the fact Albus was already looking down at him; he wasn’t used to being the focus of anyone’s attention like this, and wasn’t quite sure how he’d handle the fact that it was those green eyes giving it to him for the first time.
He gave Albus a smile that felt only about half as pathetic as he knew it must have looked.  Albus laughed through his nose, through an exhale.  It was in the short jolt of his body that Scorpius realized Albus’ hands were still on his back, just trailing up, up, up.
One stopped on the nape of his neck, the other on the back of his head and he knew what this meant from watching Albus with that girl before—not that that mattered anymore; nothing except this did—so his heart started pounding like heavy rainfall and his fingers twitched again and he closed his eyes and lifted his chin.
In the second before the kiss, Albus realized with a sort of ironic nostalgia that it was the last moment of his life he’d live without knowing what it was like to kiss Albus Potter.
But, once their lips connected, Scorpius recognized he was more than fine knowing.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Saturday 16th June, 2018
This isn’t a super long recap, just a couple of little things I really loved (mostly about act four) and wanted to gush about! By which I mean half of these points turn into rambling headcanons and this is actually well over 2k words long. I should probably apologise now... *whispers* I have a lot of feelings, okay?
Act Three, Scene One
“So we can continue our work together?” “We can” - It’s always been difficult to imagine Scorpius ever being the Scorpion King, and Jonathan’s Scorpius even more so. Yet today I truly saw the Scorpion King on stage for the first time. It was so jarring. Jonathan has such a baby face. His Scorpius is the definition of precious. Yet when he lowered his chin and his voice as he spoke to Umbridge, their was a flash of something. It was dangerous and sinister. It only lasted a second or two each time, but it was there. It was frightening how he could slip into that, but a relief that he couldn’t hold it. It’s not who he is but clearly it’s there within him.
Act Three, Scene Twenty
Jonathan was so great to watch in the torture scene today. He was getting so angry with Delphi. I love the way his voice dropped as he spoke back to her. He’ll stand up for himself and defend his friend even if it kills him. That anger, that fight inside of him… in the most unexpected turn of events, it’s Jonathan’s Scorpius who I can see the Scorpion King in the most. (Or at least aspects of him. It doesn’t seem like an impossible jump anymore.) He may look like a sweet sunshine child but make no mistake, he’s a Malfoy and he’ll protect what’s his at any cost. For example, despite having been tortured several times himself, the second Delphi goes to raise her wand at Albus to hit him with a crucio, Scorpius immediately leapt up and tried to get in between them despite being bound and injured himself. There was zero hesitation here. Even when he stumbled, he got straight back up and moved towards him again. It was a selfless act as well as one of pure defiance against Delphi. I was beaming with pride. Now this is the Scorpius people don’t see. The one Scorpius wishes his dad knew about. It’s sad because this is Scorpius. It defines so much about his character. I hope Draco learns about it one day. I also hope Albus acknowledges it at some point. I don’t know how you even go about thanking someone for doing that. But if anyone can, it’s Albus. Oh! Also, imagine Albus and Draco talking about Scorpius one day and Draco thanking Albus for looking out for his son or something. But then Albus being like, ‘Me??? He was the one who protected me.’ Now that’s a conversation...
Act Four, Scene Three
“My geekiness is a-quivering” - (Jonathan is still saying geekiness not geekness ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) Scorpius was flailing so hard he was at the point of passing out. Bless him. So Albus comes running over and stands in front of Scorpius and says, “Scorpius, breathe”, and as he does, he’s raised his hands up and slowly lowers them in hopes Scorpius will breathe out in time with him. He did, and it was brilliant. He had those breathing exercises ready to go which makes me believe this isn’t the first time he’s had to do this. Amazing. Such nerds. I LOVE THEM.
Act Four, Scene Eight
"You know about Delphi?” - So right before this, the boys are asked where Delphi is and Scorpius tries to respond but struggles. You see, Jonathan’s Scorpius has a bit of a stutter and he tends to restart his sentences and stumbles over words. I love it because it adds a whole new layer to Scorpius. This nervous, lonely kid who’s bullied and gossiped about by children and adults alike, and now he has this to deal with too. What’s worse is that none of the above are going to help him overcome his problem either. If anything, they exacerbate the issue. The contrast between him and his dad is also interesting. Draco is such a Malfoy, a real smooth talker. I’m sure watching his son grow up and struggle with his speech must have been difficult for them both. It’s another hurdle they would have had to overcome. But anyway, back to my point. When Scorpius was trying to talk here today, Draco stood next to him and just like everyone else, was eager to hear what was going on. This is vital information! But when Scorpius started to stutter, Draco started nodding his head along with him. Not in anger or out of frustration, but in an encouraging kind of way. I couldn’t tell you what happened much after this because I was lost in a world of headcanons. Of Draco’s concern, of Astoria’s support, and of their joint effort to help him in any way they could. I have no shame in admitting that it had me in tears. I haven’t seen Draco acknowledge his son’s stutter before and I never realised how much I needed it. This tiny little thing said so much about their father-son relationship. Especially since it was after their hug. It was like getting a glimpse into their lives outside of Hogwarts.
This is what I adore about James Howard. He takes those few and far between moments in the script and adds so much richness to it. He’s a true blessing to this play.
Act Four, Scene Nine
This is such a weird thing to notice but I myself am weird so here goes… you know in St. Jerome’s when Albus is asleep on the pew while Ginny and Harry are talking? Well Albus is always completely still, but today Joe moved slightly. I think he was simply readjusting his head (books don’t make good pillows whatever Scorpius says) but it made me think of an old ‘what if?’ I had. So once upon a time I suggested that maybe Albus wasn’t actually asleep in this scene. He’s merely pretending and ends up listening in to his parents conversation. I don’t think he is, but can you imagine if he was? Albus listening to his dad talking about how he does love him specifically. That he loves him to such an extend he understands how you could repel the spell of death (a spell Albus has now witnessed firsthand). His dad listening to his mum for advice just as he himself probably has over the years. Because ‘dad is pretty complicated’ so I’m sure he’s had many conversations with her about him over the years. Again, I don’t think he is listening in but reading/watching that scene with that in mind makes it super interesting. The later scenes too. Albus awkwardly looking at his dad after the ‘there’s plenty of things you’re good at’ line. Albus would understand what that’s about. It isn’t ‘right’ but he would finally see that his dad is trying. Then Albus standing up for his dad to Draco. He doesn’t quite know what he’s doing either but if his dad is trying then so can he. They share a small smile after this by the way and it warms my heart immensely. As does Hermione and Ginny knowingly smiling at each other and Harry.
Talking of ‘what if’s,  you know in Deathly Hallows when Hermione falls asleep on the sofa and Ron on the floor and Harry sees them in the morning and they’ve clearly fallen asleep holding hands? Well... imagine this with Albus and Scorpius in the church. Albus is on a pew and Scorpius has collected every single cushion he can find to make a bed on the floor beside him (he’s too tall to fit longways on the bench). Imagine the adults finding them some time later and noticing how their arms have fallen, clearly meaning they were at some point most likely holding hands. Now that’s a conversation I’m sure either of them want to overhear right now. Because it isn’t about that.
It doesn’t stop Ron saying ‘bloody hell’ as he stumbles upon them. Or Hermione’s knowing smile. Or Draco’s initial internalised panic before he’s overwhelmed by relief at his son’s happiness. Or Harry experiencing déjà vu and not knowing what to do about anything. Or Ginny smacking Ron as he boosts about his love potion while she tries to contain her own delight. Because she knows right now, this doesn’t mean much more than two best friends holding onto each other for support (and probably out of fear the other will disappear as soon as they close their eyes). But she’s got a feeling it probably won’t stay this way...
Act Four, Scene Ten
So while Ron and Draco are winding each other up in the church, I decided to watch Albus since this act is Joe’s strongest. He did not disappoint. When Ron first said ‘zap her’, Albus looked across at him and smiled and nodded along. His face screamed ‘yeeeah!’, he was clearly very onboard with this ‘masterful’ plan. But then Draco laughed at the plan and pointed out it’s flaws and Albus turned to look at him and instantly changed his allegiance. He stopped getting excited over Ron’s plan and looked far more serious and started nodding along with Draco. I absolutely LOVED IT. I loved it because you got to see two sides of Albus so clearly. Because there’s aspects of Ron and Draco in his personality. He’s impulsive and funny, yet all dry humour and pure resourcefulness. (His plans are spectacular when he puts his mind to it.) So it was brilliant to watch him flit between the two so quickly.
Personally, I think these two influence Albus a lot. Or at least have in the past and will do in the future. They’re important to him. I think the way Albus runs up the stairs towards Ron in the other timeline when he’s frustrated by Harry says a lot. It makes you wonder how often he’s done that. Gone to his uncle Ron for sweets and a joke because they’re easier to ask for than support. It’s a thing they do. A code. Then of course Draco’s influence will come much later. I have no doubt about that. They’re so alike and have common interests. Although right now he’s probably just 1000% aware he no doubt blames him just slightly for dragging his son into this. He wants to make a better impression (he’s Scorpius’s dad after all) and besides, Albus is a Slytherin. He understands Draco’s logic over Ron’s Gryffindor style plan any day. (It must be nice, having grown up surrounded by Gryffindors, to finally be around an adult Slytherin.) But yeah... to see Albus stood in between these two and connect with them both was everything.
Act Four, Scene Eleven
“You’ll always be an orphan. That never leaves you.” - From the angle I was sat, I could see Scorpius perfectly over Harry’s shoulder for this line and oh boy was that interesting. So as soon as Harry says this line, Scorpius instantly looked at Harry and the look on his face broke my heart. Now I know he’s not an orphan, but it was like he was understanding that the loss of his mother was a pain that was never going to go away. It’s something that will stay with him forever, and that’s something he’s going to have to process. I feel like deep down he knew this already but hearing Harry Potter confirm it out loud clearly affected him. It only lasts a moment before he remembers where he is and what’s happening. He then quickly broke his stare and looked down at the ground. It was such a fleeting moment but it said so much about Scorpius. I guess with Albus not talking about her much and the topic being one Draco can’t seem to broach with him, having it said so plainly in front of him gave him no choice but to face it. But then after everything he’s just gone through, maybe it’s an approach he won’t hesitate so much over in the future?
Act Four, Scene Twelve
“And there’s nothing I can do to stop him” “That’s not true” - Draco’s line was said in a slightly different tone today but that’s not what threw me. It was the fact Draco flicked his robe back and reached for his wand. I have never, ever seen a Draco do that before and I was in shock. (Or at least never so aggressively? That’s what caught my eye. The forcefulness with which he did it.) Because what could he have done? Gone after Voldemort himself? I could understand that on some level. For his childhood and for how it’s still affecting his son’s life. But then Scorpius reached over and put his hand on him and said, “Dad, now is not the time”, and he stopped. It was like it hit him where he was and who he was now. You could see the effect Scorpius has had on him. His whole body changed as he realised what he instinctively wanted to do and what he needed to do where totally different because he was different now. (I wonder how that felt? Having those feelings take over so quickly. I wonder if Scorpius has similar fears with the Scorpion King? I wonder if when/how Draco and Scorpius discuss this?!) The fact he then spends every second of the rest of this scene holding Scorpius so tightly in his arms to comfort him tells you everything you need to know about who Draco is now. This is how this man protects his son, by putting his needs first. Nothing shows how much he’s grown like this scene does.
While it was a super interesting choice for this scene, I’m not sure I could take it every time. My heart stopped beating for a second there. I mean, let’s face it. Draco would no doubt lose a duel against Voldemort. But I guess that glimpse of the old Draco was intriguing. But orphaning his son is not an option. Revenge, fear, justice. Those instincts mean nothing compared to what his son means to him.
I have to say, it reminded me a lot of Albus. Albus is headstrong and fuelled by his need to defend Scorpius during the torture scene, yet one gesture/word from Scorpius and it stops him. That parallel is fascinating. I’ve always said those two are more alike than they realise right now. But once they get to know each other they’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
Act Four, Scene Fifteen
“That heart is a good one” - As Harry said this, he pointed at Albus’s heart and a second later, it was like Albus realised what his dad was saying and instantly got a little bit embarrassed by the compliment. He quickly zipped up his hoodie and turned round away from his dad to hide and Harry laughed so much. Albus, realising everything is surprisingly okay between them, turns back to face his dad and gives him a shy little smile. It was adorably sweet. My heart...
The Harry and Albus hug at the very end hit me right in the feels. Harry reached his arm round Albus’s back and Albus looked down at his dad’s hand on his shoulder and smiled. He then rested his head on his dad’s shoulder and pretty much tucked himself into his chest. They both looked so happy. Harry then put his other arm round Albus and brought them into a proper hug and as the lights went down, I cried like the little girl that I am. These Potters have a lot to answer for.
