another sad headcanon bc I like torturing y’all ☺️
after the Curtis parents deaths any time the gang wants to watch a movie together Two-bit, Steve, Johnny, and Dally scour around to make sure there’s no car crash scene in the movie. One time six of them were in the living room. (Darry was working late that night) watching some western movie. There was a scene about halfway through where there was a car crash, specifically one involving a train. The room went silent, when the others looked back at the Curtis brothers, Soda was sobbing. Tears racing down his face, he ended up bawling for hours in Steve’s arms. Ponyboy had an absolutely terrible panic attack, y’know the train colliding into that car he saw in his nightmare in the movie? Yea, that was the scene he saw that night. It took Johnny almost an hour just to get Pony to breathe normally, Ponyboy either did pass out or came very close to it. It got to the point even Steve and Dally were really worried. Soda cried until he passed out from exhaustion, not waking up until the next morning, and Pony had such bad nightmares he didn’t sleep for three whole days afterwards, and had paralyzing nightmares every night for a solid month. After that the rest of the gang started reading about movies before they watched them.
I’m sorry.

“suddenly it wasn’t only a personal thing to me. i could picture hundreds and hundreds of boys living on the wrong sides of cities, boys with black eyes who jumped at their own shadows. hundreds of boys who maybe watched sunsets and looked at stars and ached for something better. i could see boys going down under street lights because they were mean and tough and hated the world, and it was too late to tell them that there was still good in it, and they wouldn’t believe you if you did. it was too vast a problem to be just a personal thing. there should be some help, someone should tell them before it was too late. someone should tell their side of the story, and maybe people would understand then and wouldn’t be so quick to judge a boy by the amount of hair oil he wore. it was important to me.”

Pony and Soda are both angry criers. Soda doesn't mind so much. He's the gangs bawl baby. And truly? he doesn't even mind that title anymore. none of them say it like it's a bad thing. he gets mad, he starts crying he moves on n keeps it going. but Pony? he HATES it. he KNOWS what he wants to say. he KNOWS why he's angry. and he IS. he's not sad or mixed up he's just FRUSTRATED and for whatever stupid reason it makes him cry and it pisses him off to no end.

so what if darry had a breakdown that both soda and pony walked in on because he’s just so tired and stressed and he can’t keep himself going anymore especially post book because he’s so afraid that pony is gonna seriously hurt himself and that soda’s not gonna make it out of tulsa and he just has the biggest breakdown of his life wouldn’t that be silly

currently thinking about the way death’s at my door is staged: TW for brief implied su*c*de attempt/s*lf-h*rm
Pony starts the song while sitting at the top of the church with the knife he just used to cut his hair still in his hands. Pony’s tired and he’s been holed up in that church with nothing but his swirling thoughts to keep him company while Johnny is out getting them more supplies. He starts singing about how death follows him, how he’s a danger to those around him, looking back at himself in the reflection of the switchblade.
Unbeknownst to him, Johnny’s returned with water and has been silently listening. And at that line, finally makes his presence known.
“That’s crazy talk Ponyboy” he says. And Ponyboy comes down to meet him on the next floor down. Pony argues about how he’s cursed and Johnny should “move on” and is “better off without [him]”.
Johnny has heard this before. He’s heard himself say those things before and hearing them coming from Ponyboy is scary. Especially when he sees the way the knife in Pony’s hand trembles, the way his eyes refuse to look at Johnny’s, solely focused on the white knuckle grip he has on the blade.
Johnny has mentioned wanting to disappear to his best friend before and was always met with warmth and love from Ponyboy, assurance that he still wants Johnny around. So that’s what he provides for Ponyboy in this moment. He comes closer, making Ponyboy hear him when he says “the reason i’m living is you,” which finally gets Ponyboy’s attention away from the knife.
And in the way someone would approach a dog with something between its teeth that it shouldn’t have, he holds out his hand. He lets Pony make the choice to give the knife back to him. It’s a reach that conveys Johnny’s worry for what Pony might have done with that blade if he hadn’t come earlier. It’s his relief when Pony gives it back and they close their hands around it in their promise to never leave the other alone.
And they smile because they know that while the world seems scary and dark, they’ll always be there for each other. Urging each other to go on even when things look bleak. And it’s with that comfort that they finally let themselves go to sleep for the night.

Okay so I found this picture of Pinterest and highkey. It has me CRYING. And let me tell you why!!!
Tumblr media
Both Soda and Darry are compared to their dad in the book, and while I can't really recall at the moment if any of them were compared to their mother, I'm gonna go at the personal headcanon that Ponyboy was compared to her quite a lol in a similar way to Soda and Darry being compared to their dad. But see here- their mom is blonde. Soda in the book is blond, but I feel like it's an entirely different ballgame when Ponyboy bleaches his hair. When Darry and Soda reunite with him and after the pure joy and relief that he was alive...I just imagine a sense of unease. Seeing him with the blond hair- the comparisons to their mother hadn't completely clicked until then. It makes them feel...a lot of things. But above all, there is a harsh mixture of grief and love. For both their mother and Ponyboy.

Sad outsiders headcanon:
After few years after Dally died Darry became a cop, Pony hated him for it a first. Why would his brother choose to be a part of the same team of Socs that carelessly gunned down his friend? But Darry chose to be a cop for that same reason, to be the voice of reason on his team, to make sure no other kids ended up like Dallas. By becoming a cop he wanted to remove the bias in the police department, he wanted to have greasers trust law enforcement again instead of trying to handle everything themselves.

the idea of darry meeting mason is actually so tragic to me. Mason "does it ever get easier? do you ever stop feeling like it's not enough? do you ever stop aching for the life you should have had?" Mccormick and Darry "No. But sometimes they'll run to you when they skin their knee or look at you first when they laugh or fall asleep pressed against your chest and maybe that's enough" Curtis
Is it ever enough to just love them?
No. I wish it was.

bro imagine all the events of the book happen. and then pony gets taken from darry by the state and put into foster care 🧍‍♂️
it would be very sad. and also. it’d be an awesome fic to write where pony writes letters to his brothers from his different homes and we only see the story through their back and forth letters. which of course includes pony’s unreliable narrator ass
