We don't really ban books here, but this was a book that was never stocked in my school.

I haven't read it for years and might never read it again. A young Australian boy is sent to relatives in England while his younger brother experiences hospice care for terminal cancer.

The boy is determined to meet the queen and explain the situation to her, certain that her personal physicians will be able to help and that the doctors back home aren't trying hard enough.

His feckless cousin joins him on jaunts through the city, and in a house graffitied with the word 'queens', the boy makes a friend.

His friend is a gay man, whose 'friend', or rather lover, has cancer as well as AIDS.

There's a couple of inevitable conclusions the story draws to, and it's as masterfully wrought as any of his other stories - but better, because in all the humour he writes compassionately and realistically about a boy learning about the cruelties of the world - but also seeing that love exists if you know where to look for it. The scene where they share a tangerine is so humbling and devastating.

If you're looking for a good cry and a bit of historical context, give this a read.

It's 2025, and we're sadder than ever!

Maybe it's time for a Sad Bastard Cookbook sequel? Maybe a spin-off for parents of small children? Maybe both?

Glad you asked! We wrote a cookbook full of judgement-free recipes you can make when you're suffering from mental illness, physical disability, poverty, or anything else late-stage capitalism throws up that makes basic self-care feel impossible. Some of the recipes were our own, some we collected from the community.

the dream thieves is the most perfect book ever because adam and gansey are going through a divorce, blue is breaking up with adam, ronan lets go of his crush on gansey in favor of perusing his para-religious devotion to adam full time, kavinsky is obsessed with having a threesome with gansey and ronan and sends gansey a dick pic from ronan’s phone, gansey starts dating blue behind adam's back the second they're freshly divorced and adam and blue have broken up, ronan turns kavinsky down and as a reaction to that kavinsky kidnaps ronans brother and then kills himself in front of their whole group. everyone is completely unfazed by this except for gansey who seems to care a little bit which adam thinks is cute. it's also in this book that the hitman who killed ronan’s dad starts hitting on blue’s mom. sound off in the comments if you know of any other ya books similar to this
