So ": x-zile-ish"
Saturday 7/2/2016. 7:01pm
I’m at Face’s by the pool.
I left orange roses at the Orlando (Pulse Night Club) memorial out front.
The gates at Fair Oaks cemetery were closed. I think the boys wish to donate (the roses) to the Orlando 49 (49 shot to death at Pulse Gay Bar on 6/12/2016.)
"Sweet Dreams are made of this..” Plays inside (Face’s Bar)
I’m writing by a pool at a gay bar.
So “x-zile-ish”.
Yet another outsider practice. Practice dropping out of your life.
Was going to see “Lobster” again, but, something made me bring the Fair Oaks Roses to the K Street (Faces) memorial.
The new death by bullet spray. The old , by illness (Aids)
Writing, I am “sexually suspect”
Not drinking, doubly so!
End of entry
Notes 6/15/2024
The above entry was written the day that I visited the Pulse Night Club memorial at Face’s Bar in Sacramento mentioned in my first posting today.
Face’s is a huge 2 story building on K Street in Sacramento . It has a small swimming pool in the back of the building. It also contains multiple dance floors and bars.
I was sitting at a table by the pool writing the above entry. I haven’t drank alcohol since 2011, so I was not drinking that day as I wrote the entry.
If you write in a bar, even if you drink alcohol, you are considered odd. Anti social. My term for this was Sexually Suspect.
Prior to going to the Face’s Bar, I had tried to visit the grave of my first Aid’s match, Daryl Specter, at the Fair Oaks Cemetery . He died in 1987. I also would visit the graves of the Gay Dentist and his lover across the small cemetery road from Daryl’s grave. I didn’t know them in life. But, I’ve adopted them . Their head stone reads “give me patience and I want it now”!
But, when I got to Fair Oak’s Cemetery, the gate was closed. I brought roses for the boys in the cemetery, but , since I couldn’t get in to see them, I left their flowers at the Faces memorial.
I assumed that the Dentist and his lover died of Aids, as did Daryl.
Thus, my line in the journal entry “The new death by bullet spray (Pulse Night Club)
The old by illness (Aids)
I matched with men with aids on a volunteer basis in the 80’s and 90’s through Aids support organizations. We would help the men through their illness and death.
Sweet Dreams (are made of this) by the Eurythmics, Annie Lennox (1983)

My Bucket List - Blog Post 5
Since there is no blog prompt this week, I would love to talk about the list of things I want to experience in nature, at least once in my life (in no particular order). I think witnessing all these moments would be fulfilling for me, as I find them all very beautiful!
The first experience I want to share is something that I recently checked off my mental “bucket list,” which is watching a solar eclipse. I was able to watch the solar eclipse last summer with my family in Hamilton, Ontario, where it had the clearest view of the sky. We drove for an hour in traffic from Mississauga, and finally stopped at a random park where a crowd was waiting for the moon to pass in front of the sun. Honestly, I had an irrational fear that watching the eclipse would make me go blind, so I spent most of the time anxiously making sure that my family and I kept our solar eclipse glasses on properly. However, watching it was an incredible experience that filled me with awe. It was a powerful reminder that we are just humans on a small moving planet, while countless other astronomical bodies are in motion too. I recorded a video of the eclipse, but nothing can compare to witnessing its beauty in real life!
The second moment I would love to have is watching the Northern Lights. I am not specific about the location, just as long as I am able to have a clear view of the lights across the sky. Out of everything on my list, I think this would be the most beautiful and surreal sight to experience. I have always loved stargazing, but living in a city makes it hard to appreciate the stars, as I am only able to see an empty, black sky.
I always had a deep fascination with space for as long as I can remember. If I were interested in specifically studying math and physics, I would have absolutely pursued a career in astronomy. However, since math is not my best subject, I settle with experiencing these types of moments instead, where I am able to truly appreciate space.
In addition to seeing the Northern Lights, I would love to stargaze in an area where the sky is completely clear, without any city lights around. This is not something I want to do once, but many times throughout my lifetime. I could spend hours just staring at the stars!
Another experience I want to have, is swimming with fish, and other marine life in a tropical country. This is one of the cuter moments I would love to have. I want to be able to see what it is like to live with aquatic animals, and admire the view of the water from underneath. The closest I have gotten to an aquatic animal, other than small fish, is a beluga whale in MarineLand. However, I don’t agree with MarineLand's methods, as they have been found guilty under the animal cruelty laws in Ontario (Casey, 2024). I would definitely want to go somewhere that allows the aquatic animals to roam freely alongside humans. Although I am not too educated on the topic currently, I would definitely have to do more research once I am planning my trip in the future.
Finally, the last thing I want to see are bioluminescent algae/plankton. These are very small organisms that the tides wash ashore and are mixed into the sand. Once they are disturbed, for example, when walked on, they begin to glow (Sweeney, 2024). I think it’s another surreal view in nature, in addition to the Northern Lights, as they both remind me of the movie Avatar, where the illustrated environment is especially beautiful.

In a heartwarming update, Henry Cavill, known for his role as Superman in Man of Steel, and his girlfriend Natalie Viscuso have become parents for the first time. The couple, who have been together for a few years, are now the proud parents of a newborn, marking a new chapter in their lives. The announcement was made public in January 2025, after a source close to the couple confirmed that they had welcomed their first child. While the couple has yet to share specific details about the baby, such as their name, gender, or birthdate, it is clear that Henry and Natalie are thrilled with the new addition to their family. A glimpse of the couple’s life as new parents was captured by The Daily Mail on January 18, when they were spotted in Australia. The photos showed Henry Cavill and Natalie pushing a baby stroller, enjoying a walk together. Henry is currently in Australia for work, filming the much-anticipated live-action Voltron movie, which is set to be a major project in the coming months. Credits: wikicommons Sue Lukenbaugh from Sacramento, USA, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons The couple’s journey to parenthood has been publicly celebrated by both Henry and Natalie in the past. In April 2024, Henry made the exciting announcement that he and Natalie were expecting their first baby. Speaking to Access Hollywood at the premiere of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare in New York City, he shared, "I'm very excited about it. Natalie and I are both very excited about it. I'm sure you'll see much more of that." His words showed the happiness he and Natalie were feeling as they prepared for the arrival of their child. Henry Cavill and Natalie Viscuso first went public with their relationship in 2021. In April of that year, they shared a photo on Instagram where they were playing a game of chess together. Natalie’s caption for the photo read, “Just teaching my dear Henry how to play some chess...or...maybe he let me win? 🤷🏼♀️” This post marked the beginning of their public relationship, which quickly garnered attention from their fans. Over the years, Henry and Natalie have kept their relationship relatively private, sharing only a few glimpses of their life together on social media. However, the couple’s connection has been clear, and they have often shown their support for each other at various events. Their bond has grown stronger, and with the arrival of their baby, it is evident that their love story has entered a new and exciting phase. In the months leading up to the baby’s birth, Henry celebrated Father’s Day in June 2024, eagerly looking forward to the upcoming changes in his life. He took to Instagram to ask his followers for fatherly advice, reflecting his excitement and anticipation for the role of fatherhood. His fans quickly responded with support and tips, many of them sharing their experiences as parents themselves. Though the couple has remained private about many aspects of their personal life, their excitement about becoming parents was clear. Henry Cavill, who is known for his strong on-screen roles, has shared his softer side as he prepared for fatherhood. His openness about his feelings has resonated with fans, who have been supportive and eager to see the next steps in his life with Natalie and their child. Henry Cavill’s career has kept him in the public eye, with roles in blockbuster movies and TV series. He is best known for playing Superman in the DC Extended Universe, but his talents extend beyond superhero roles. Henry’s versatility as an actor has made him a beloved figure in Hollywood, and his personal life has also sparked interest among his fans. His relationship with Natalie Viscuso, a producer at Vertigo Entertainment, has garnered attention for its sweetness and sincerity. Natalie Viscuso, who has worked behind the scenes in the entertainment industry, has also gained recognition for her relationship with Henry. While she has kept a low profile compared to her famous partner, she has shown her support for Henry throughout his career. Together, they make a strong couple, balancing their personal and professional lives. As the couple enjoys their new role as parents, they are likely to continue their work in the entertainment industry. Henry is currently focused on filming Voltron, a live-action film that has been highly anticipated by fans of the original animated series. While the actor is busy with his professional commitments, he has expressed his excitement about balancing his work life with the joys of fatherhood. credits: wikicommons Gage Skidmore from Peoria, AZ, United States of America, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons Becoming parents has been a dream come true for both Henry and Natalie, and their fans are excited to see them embark on this new adventure. As they embrace the joys and challenges of parenthood, it is clear that the couple’s bond will only grow stronger. Their journey together, both in their personal and professional lives, will continue to inspire their fans and followers around the world. While details about the baby’s name and gender remain private, the excitement surrounding Henry and Natalie’s new arrival is palpable. The couple’s fans have been eagerly waiting for updates, and the first photos of the baby will undoubtedly be met with enthusiasm and support. As new parents, Henry and Natalie are likely to continue their lives in the public eye, but they have made it clear that their family is their top priority. Read the full article

BEST OF 2024
For 2023 being so boring for media, 2024 ruled.
ALBUM
Caribou - Honey
Mannequin Pussy - I Got Heaven
SONG
Anything from the above two albums. It's very likely Mannequin Pussy - Loud Bark, but it could be any song from either.
RECORD / COVER
fabric presents Rødhåd (DJ Mix) [Mixed]. All of them. From the start to finish this thing is a delight to my brain cells.
SET/MIX
Qrion - Anjunadeep 491
Mannequin Pussy - KEXP 2024
Rebecca Black - Boiler Room
All of Rob Jenkins - AMBIENT TECHNO || ## mixes were great
The Get Up Kids - KEXP
Glixen - Audiotree
MOVIE
Civil War. Everyone mistakenly thinks this is a war movie instead of a very deep movie about war journalists. Even with that in mind, the final ~30-minutes is arguably the best action I've ever seen in a movie ever.
I Saw The TV Glow (super close second. FUCKING close second. it'll probably go up to first place with enough time, but right now it's second for the mere fact that Civil War has better repeat value and no other reason.)
LONGLEGS
Anora
A Quiet Place: Day One. I really hated the glaring plot hole and plot armor, but I can't stop thinking about underlying themes. Also Eddie Munson is back baby! He's going to be in that upcoming Warfare movie by Alex Garland too.
Late Night With the Devil
Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person
The 4:30 Movie
I'm wildly behind on my 2024 watchlist: Nosferatu, War of the Rohirrim, Conclave, The Outrun, A Different Man, All We Imagine as Light, Frankie Freako, The Substance, His Three Duaghters, Blink Twice, Didi, MaXXXine, Kinds of Kindness, I Used to Be Funny, Ghostlight, Sacramento, Am I OK?, Live Lies Bleedings, Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World…. There's so much more on my list but I'm getting bored typing them all out.
TV SHOW
House of the Dragon s2. It's strange to me how much better it was over s1. All the characters finally being mature and making realm-altering decisions contributed to it, as much some of the dumb unbelievable dragon fight scenes almost ruined it. Not about CGI, more about tactics and decisions, but whatever the dialogue rules and old Game of Thrones is finally back.
White Lotus
In no order at all: Fallout, Shogun, Teacup, From, Hysteria!, Sweetpea, Arcane s2.
I haven't watched Vox s3 yet and that's probably going to be easy #1 when I do. I also watched a bunch of shitty reality TV this year. Like… a lot.
ACTOR
Maika Monroe or Mikey Madison easily. Although EVERYONE in Civil War was phenomenal.
VIDEO GAME
WOW Season of Discovery. I quit playing around May because it was too good and I needed to focus on other things. The absolute best interation of shaman and best class I've ever played in any MMO ever. Troll shaman is my alter ego.
Dead by Daylight. Again and again this game is perfect to me.
HackNet was a fairly good gem of a find this year. All the muscle memory of DOS commands still there from me being a little ass 7 year old playing on my Dad's computer is insane to me.
BOOK
Blacktongue Thief. Daughters' War. Christopher Buehlman is a personal hero for having written these books.
Josh Ambercrome - First Law Trilogy. The most grimdark book I have ever read and will probably ever read. This is one of the best examples of using the point-of-view of a character to get you to generally like them or relate to them… but then you step back and think and say no no no these people are fucking ALL awful what the fuck? Even though it was a delight to read these people are ALL generally awful.
The Wringer. Young adult or kids book, but a friend said it was her favorite book so hell with it it's only a 4-5 hour read easy enough. Such great themes of peer pressure from friends, parents, and society. Push against it to do what's right. Standing up for yourself and your morales. Learning who your real and true friends are. Using the pigeons for an analogy of racism or prejudice. What a great book.
King of the Wylds. It's a medieval fantasy book about a bunch of old ass has-been adventurers who come out of retirement to go on a quest to save one of their warrior-daughters who bit off more than she could chew. It's simeoultaneous super funny and very deep. The sequel was fucking awful and we don't discuss that.
Orconomics Trilogy. I enjoyed the constant medieval fantasy analogies to various financial collapses since the 1900s with dumb medieval investments. "If we all invest in the dragon's horde what happens when we actually get it and discover it can't possible pay us what it's worth." Just one speculative bubble after another. If he writes a 4th book it's going to be about crypto-crash and the Tesla bubble popping.
Looking back on this year I read A LOT of books. Finished WOT, Red Rising series, Stephen King Fairy Tale, Stephen King Talisman, Dean K Intensity, Ms. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, The Catcher in the Rye, The Lesser Dead, Between Two Fires, Those Across the River, King's Dark Tidings (didn't finish, fucking trash), Cleat Cute (didn't finish, was porn), Dungeon Crawler Carl, and Stephen King's It (didn't finish, too fucking violent).
ATHLETE
Trinity Rodman is arguably the coolest zoomer ever, but Alyssa Naeher. Fucking easily. https://x.com/NBCOlympics/status/1822317111701631197 [one-handed save final minutes Olympics 2024 v. Brazil.]
PERSON
I don't want to say.
FOOD
Spicy Potato Tacos. Easily. I ate my body weight x20 in these things.
Indian food is always the best forever the best, but it feels like a cheat code to keep listing it year after year no matter how true it is.
TRIP
July camping at Sly Park. 104-106 degrees for the whole trip so I floated in an inner-tube the entire time while drinking PBRs. I'm a very simple person with very simple desires.
MOMENT
This is nerdy as all hell, but fuck it I don't care. I was top-50 shaman player in the world out of like 180,000+ players and I'm bragging to every cute girl at the bar about it forever.
BIGGEST LETDOWN
Houdini. I miss that little fucker so much and everytime I think about him I instantly cry.
Idiot Kamala Harris. I've written about it endlessly and fuck it I'll do it again. Fuck her and fuck the Democrats for trying to carve out an electorate / split the Republicans with the Republicans. Fuck her fuck her fuck her fuck her.
//
Theme of the year: Get high on drugs and say stupid shit.
Goals for 2025: Break the theme of 2024. Also more nonfiction books, bike rides, and give these filthpig rats back to my mom. I'd like to honestly and earnestly just figure out a bunch of my shit.

### **Danganronpa: World Destiny - A Fanfic**
#### **The Beginning**
Bryan Barson, a 14-year-old aspiring astronomer from Sacramento, California, dreams of attending the prestigious World Destiny School. After an impressive interview showcasing his knowledge and skills in astronomy and astrology, he receives an acceptance letter. Overjoyed, Bryan eagerly anticipates his first day.
However, on the morning he is to begin his new adventure, Bryan wakes up in an unfamiliar, opulent room with astronomy-themed décor. Confused, he explores and encounters Penny Delans, a 16-year-old pop star, who is equally disoriented. Together, they navigate the building and find themselves in a garden with 14 other kids, all similarly confused.
#### **The Announcement**
A stuffed bear, half white and half black, named Monokuma, appears and introduces himself. One of the kids recognizes Monokuma from the game "Danganronpa." Monokuma confirms that they are in a real-life version of the game, where the only way to escape is to kill one of the others. He introduces all the students:
1. Roberto Valens, 12, soccer player
2. Annie Kilan, 14, mixologist
3. Joan Diamond, 13, artist
4. Alice Teman, 15, veterinary student
5. Tass Dolson, 13, marine biologist
6. Sonia Radolf, 14, professional hip-hop dancer
7. Denny Peterson, 14, programmer
8. Lorrie Savin, 13, photographer
9. Mathew Sanders, 15, movie director
10. Vinny Vanman, 13, show business and comedy
11. David Georg, 17, banking and accounting
12. Natalie Simons, 12, hotel management
13. Teo Lemar, 12, mathematician
14. Penny Delans, 16, musician
15. Bryan Barson, 14, astronomer and astrologer
16. Andrea Milan, 12, actor
#### **Life in Captivity**
The students vow not to kill anyone. A week passes uneventfully, and they explore their surroundings, limited to the ground floor and one floor above where the rooms are. Bryan becomes friends with Penny, Roberto, and Alice. Penny is friendly but talks incessantly about her relationships. Roberto is a naïve but kind-hearted soccer player. Alice, though antisocial, opens up about gaming, demons, and animals.
Bryan’s leadership is challenged by Mathew, leading to an election that Mathew wins. Monokuma later shows disturbing messages from the students’ families, leading to Annie’s breakdown, which Mathew manages to calm.
Bryan finds a newspaper dated 2040, even though it is currently 2024. Monokuma mocks his confusion and disappears. Mathew organizes a party at the pool to lift spirits, but the next morning, Teo is found dead in the storage room, impaled with a metal skewer from the bar.
#### **The Investigation and First Trial**
Clues point to several suspects: Annie, David, Alice, and Denny. After thorough investigation, it’s revealed that Annie killed Teo, driven by the desperate need to ensure her family’s safety amid the chaos Monokuma displayed. Annie is executed, shaking the trust among the students.
#### **Isolation and New Discoveries**
Friendships crumble, and the group isolates themselves. The second floor is opened, containing a medical cabinet and a computer room. Alice becomes the nurse, leveraging her veterinary skills. Denny attempts to connect to the internet and finds a document about a movie called "World Destiny," eerily similar to their situation.
Mathew, now suspiciously under pressure, organizes a party, but Alice is found dead, tied with metal wires and hanging from the staircase. Clues initially point to David but ultimately reveal Denny’s guilt. His motive is tied to his desire to experience the new technologically advanced world.
#### **Unraveling the Mastermind**
The third floor opens, containing a spa, fitness center, and arts room. Joan is thrilled to use the arts room but is later found dead, along with Sonia, in a gruesome double murder. Clues lead the students to discover Vinny’s involvement, prompted by her desire to eliminate those she found unworthy.
Mathew is increasingly under suspicion. Bryan and Penny find a voice recorder revealing the director’s reluctance and hints about a war that devastated half the world’s population. The director’s final message implicates the mastermind as one of the students, suggesting that they are part of a twisted experiment.
#### **The Mastermind Revealed**
The fourth floor reveals a huge library, cinema, and laundry room. The students find a script for a movie similar to their situation, intensifying their search for the mastermind. Monokuma offers a hefty reward for another murder, testing their resolve. Tass is found dead, leading to a revelation that the ceiling collapse caused his fatal injuries. Roberto’s exploration uncovers secret passageways.
The fifth floor opens, housing a sewing room, larger kitchen, and gaming room. Bryan and Penny find a voice recorder, hinting at the mastermind’s plan and the global devastation. Mathew’s past, linked with a psychopath’s profile found by Lory, strengthens their suspicions. Natalia’s gruesome death solidifies the urgency to find the truth.
#### **The Final Confrontation**
Bryan and Penny decide to investigate quietly. They uncover more about the mastermind’s plans and the war’s aftermath. Monokuma gathers everyone for the final trial. Arguments and accusations fly, with each student scrutinized for involvement. The clues, the notes, and Mathew’s knowledge and skills ultimately point to him.
Mathew, cornered, confesses. He reveals that he was coerced into creating the game, inspired by Danganronpa, to save them from the radiation outside. Overcome with guilt, he presses the self-destruct button, urging the others to escape.
#### **Escape and New Beginnings**
Bryan, Penny, Lory, and Roberto run towards the exit as the building collapses around them. They barely escape the exploding structure, tumbling onto the grass outside. They look back at the ruins of their prison, breathing in the fresh air of freedom.
**Bryan:** "We did it. We’re free."
**Penny:** "But at what cost?"
**Roberto:** "We have to remember those we lost. They didn’t die in vain."
**Lory:** "We’ll make it through this. Together."
The outside world, scarred by war but showing signs of rebuilding, awaits them. They vow to use their experience to survive and rebuild, united by hope and determination. Their journey is just beginning, but they face the future together, ready to overcome any challenge.

Band that has horror vibes:
Band: The Cramps
Year: 1976

Some history:
The Cramps were an American punk rock band, formed in 1976 and active until 2009. The band split after the death of lead singer Lux Interior. Their line-up rotated much over their existence. Occasional bass guitarist Poison Ivy the only permanent members.
They were part of the early CBGB punk rock movement that had emerged in New York. The Cramps are noted as influencing a number of musical styles: not only were they one of the first garage punk bands, they are also widely recognized as one of the prime innovators of psychobilly. (Wiki, Contributors to Punk. “The Cramps.” Punk Wiki. Accessed April 25, 2024. https://punk.fandom.com/wiki/The_Cramps.)

1972 - Lux Interior (born Erick Lee Purkhiser) and Poison Ivy (born Kristy Marlana Wallace) met in Sacramento, California in. In light of their common artistic interests and shared devotion to record collecting, they decided to form The Cramps.
1975 - They moved to Akron, Ohio, and then to New York. soon entering into CBGB's early punk scene with other emerging acts like the Ramones, Patti Smith, Television, and Mink DeVille. The lineup.
1978 - They gave a landmark free concert for patients at the California State Mental Hospital in Napa, recorded on a Sony Portapak video camera by the San Francisco collective Target Video and later released as Live at Napa State Mental Hospital.
—————-
1980 - The Cramps relocated to Los Angeles in and hired guitarist Kid Congo Powers of The Gun Club. While recording their second LP, Psychedelic Jungle, the band and Miles Copeland began to dispute royalties and creative rights.
1982 - The band appears in the film Urgh! A Music War.
1983 - When they recorded Smell of Female live at New York's Peppermint Lounge; Kid Congo Powers subsequently departed. Mike Metoff of The Pagans (cousin of Nick Knox) was the final second guitarist – albeit only live – of the Cramps' pre-bass era.
1985 - The Cramps recorded a one-off track for the horror movie The Return of the Living Dead called "Surfin' Dead", on which Ivy played bass as well as guitar.
1986 - With the release A Date With Elvis, the Cramps permanently added a bass guitar to the mix, but had trouble finding a suitable player, so Ivy temporarily filled in as the band's bassist.
——————-
1991 - Knox left the band. The Cramps hit the Top 40 in the UK for the first and only time with "Bikini Girls with Machine Guns"; Ivy posed as such both on the cover of the single and in the promotional video for the song.
1994 - The Cramps made their national US television debut on Late Night with Conan O'Brien performing "Ultra Twist".
1995 - The Cramps appeared on the TV-series Beverly Hills, 90210 in the Halloween episode "Gypsies, Cramps and Fleas." They played two songs in show: "Mean Machine" and "Strange Love." Lux Interior started the song by saying "Hey boys and ghouls, are you ready to raise the dead?".
——————-
2001 - On January 10 Bryan Gregory died at Anaheim Memorial Medical Center of complications following a heart attack. He was 46.

I've never been here before
May 21, 2023 8:38pm. Sunday
May. May Day. May pole. Mayhem. Melee (May-Lay)
I’ve never been here before. I’ve never known this shade of dark living. Since 1958, I’ve never known a Zoe-less world. I’m not the same person that I was. (before Zoe's death)
In a B J Miller hospice you tube talk tonight, the moderator asked if returning to work aided the mourning process.
BJ said to balance the two. There is a need for grieving and a need for work. Integrate them. He used some other term, but, that’s what he meant.
So, back to work tomorrow.
10:03pm
While lying in bed, I felt someone rub the top of my head. Then, a moment later, I felt 3 taps on my forehead. I said “Hello Zoe. Are you there?” (There was no one else in the room with me)
5/24/2023 Wednesday 9:26pm
Zoe’s been dead for 10 day’s now. What’s it like to have been dead that long, Zoe? Skyler and I had a long talk tonight about how lonely this journey is. No one can understand, comprehend. They don’t need to. I have never felt this before or been here before. The Zoe-less world. I still can’t believe it.
End of this part of these journal entries
Zoe was born in 1958 and died on May 14, 2023. I was born in 1955.
BJ Miller is an end of life care physician who speaks and writes on the topic of end of life care.
Skyler, Zoes friend, was instrumental in providing end of life care to her.
Skyler and I talked today, May 2, 2024. The one year anniversary of Zoe's death is difficult for both of us.
So odd to think that I haven't talked with Zoe for about one year.
Im posting a photo tonight containing photos of Zoe taken in San Diego in the 1980's. She lived and taught elementary school there for 20 years. I glued her photos to a record containing the sound track from the 1985 movie "A Room With a View". I saw the movie just as I began my volunteer work with men with Aids in Sacramento in 1986. The beauty of that film and its title song , Puccini's "O Mio Babino Caro" infuse my memories of the tragic, brave and beautiful early days of Aids work. And, caught the gentle touch that Zoe gave to life as well.

Sacramento tamale spot becomes the meal of choice for Hollywood stars
Feb 27, 2024
A popular tamale spot got a five-star review from some stars out of Hollywood.
The Warner Bros. movie crew couldn’t get enough of Yolanda’s Tamales. It's been a Sacramento staple since 1988.
However, Andres Yanez said, in his 15 years of running the restaurant and food truck, the coolest order he’s ever taken happened this month.

Exciting news for movie fans: the highly anticipated road trip comedy Sacramento, starring Michael Cera and Kristen Stewart, is set to hit theaters on March 28, 2025. The film’s release date was officially shared by director and star Michael Angarano at the 2025 Palm Springs International Film Festival, as reported by Collider’s Aidan Kelley. This comedy follows the journey of two childhood friends who reunite and set off on an adventurous road trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento. The movie promises to be a fun-filled ride, filled with humor, surprises, and heartfelt moments. A Packed Release Week in March 2025 While Sacramento will be one of the biggest releases on March 28, 2025, it won’t be the only movie hitting theaters that day. The same weekend, two other films are also scheduled to make their debut. One of these is The Woman in the Yard, a psychological thriller directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, starring Danielle Deadwyler. The other is A Working Man, an action-packed film directed by David Ayer, featuring big names like Jason Statham and David Harbour. These films will be going head-to-head with Sacramento for the audience’s attention. Credits: Wikicommons Lyn Fairly Media, CC BY 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0, via Wikimedia Commons In addition, there are plenty of exciting films already out the week before, which will continue to draw in moviegoers. This includes Disney’s live-action Snow White, the sci-fi thriller Ash starring Eiza González and Aaron Paul, and the drama Alto Knights, starring Robert De Niro. Also, Magazine Dreams, a film that had a lot of buzz earlier in the year, will be released again after facing some delays due to actor Jonathan Majors being convicted of assault. As if that wasn’t enough competition, the following week promises to bring even more excitement to movie lovers. Films like the Minecraft Movie, which stars Jack Black, and the Freaky Tales action comedy anthology, starring Pedro Pascal and Ben Mendelsohn, will give audiences plenty of choices. The Plot of ‘Sacramento At the heart of Sacramento is the story of two childhood friends who have drifted apart over the years. The movie centers on Ricky (played by director Michael Angarano), a carefree spirit who reconnects with his old friend Glenn (played by Michael Cera, known for his role in Barbie). Glenn is about to become a father, and the reunion leads to an unexpected road trip that takes them from the busy streets of Los Angeles to the quieter, calmer atmosphere of Sacramento. As the two friends travel together, they are joined by Rosie, played by Kristen Stewart (known for her role in Love Lies Bleeding), and Tallie, played by Maya Erskine (famous for her work in Mr. and Mrs. Smith and who is also married to Angarano in real life). In an exciting twist, the movie will also feature A.J. Mendez, a former WWE wrestler known by her ring name A.J. Lee. This film marks her debut in the world of acting. A.J. Mendez had previously made waves in TV with a recurring role in the show Heels. Sacramento will also see performances from Rosalind Chao, well-known for her role as Keiko O'Brien in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and newcomer Iman Karram, who had a role in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Behind the Scenes of ‘Sacramento’ The director of Sacramento, Michael Angarano, is no stranger to the world of filmmaking. He previously directed the 2017 drama Avenues. For Sacramento, he also worked on the script with Chris Smith, who is known for his work on Friends From College. Together, Angarano and Smith produced the movie along with Stephen Braun, Chris Abernathy, and Eric Fleischman. The film was shot in Sacramento, California, and the choice of location is important, as it gives the film an authentic feel and helps set the tone for the journey the characters are about to undertake. The movie had its first premiere at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in 2024 and received glowing reviews from critics. In fact, Sacramento currently holds a 95% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a major achievement for a movie still months away from its full release. Credits: Wikicommons Gage Skidmore from Peoria, AZ, United States of America, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons What to Expect From ‘Sacramento’ Fans of both Michael Cera and Kristen Stewart can expect plenty of laughs and emotional moments. Cera, who is known for his quirky and often awkward characters, brings his unique charm to the role of Glenn, while Stewart adds her own special touch to the role of Rosie. Together, they create a dynamic duo that promises to be both funny and heartwarming. The movie is expected to be a light-hearted yet meaningful exploration of friendship, personal growth, and the unpredictability of life. While the film’s primary focus is on humor, it also delves into deeper themes, such as what happens when old friends meet again after years of separation and the changes that life brings. The road trip genre has always been a popular one, but Sacramento stands out because of its mix of humor, adventure, and heartfelt storytelling. With a talented cast and a director who knows how to tell a compelling story, Sacramento is poised to be a memorable film when it hits theaters in 2025. Read the full article

California's Newsom takes aim: GOP destined for 'waste bin of history'
California Gov. Gavin Newsom laments: “America in 2019 is California in the 1990s. The xenophobia, the nativism, the fear of ‘the other.’“ | Rich Pedroncelli/AP Photo
The Interview
The generously coiffed former San Francisco mayor, who spent the better part of the last decade waiting his turn back in the political klieg lights, is on the attack, and on multiple fronts.
SACRAMENTO — Don’t look now, but Gavin Newsom is making some noise.
He’s coming out swinging at Donald Trump (and Fox News). Emerging from Jerry Brown’s shadow. Pushing an ambitious state policy agenda backed by a fatter-than-ever budget. Preparing the ground, many believe, for his own potential run at national office after the 2020 circus winds down.
Story Continued Below
The generously coiffed former San Francisco mayor, who spent the better part of the last decade waiting his turn back in the political klieg lights, is on the attack, and on multiple fronts.
Speaking to POLITICO in his office at the state Capitol, California’s new governor uses superlatives like “magnificent” to describe his achievements in his first six months, basks in the bliss (for now) of leading a Democratic super-majority in Sacramento and wastes no opportunity to score points on the national stage.
“America in 2019 is California in the 1990s,” Newsom says, not approvingly. “The xenophobia, the nativism, the fear of ‘the other.’ Scapegoating. Talking down or past people. The hysteria. And so, we’re not going to put up with that. We are going to push back.”
If Newsom doesn’t yet have the national profile he might want, he also knows California’s status as a virtual nation-state, as so many pols and pundits here are fond of saying, makes him more than just one of 50 governors. He demands to be watched, and will be.
There will be multiple ways for Newsom to trip up in the months ahead. The Democratic supermajority in Sacramento could easily push him to overreach, and that could backfire on him, fiscally speaking, if the state economy turns sour. His expansive policy agenda easily could turn unfocused. The state’s realities — the highest poverty rate in the country, a housing crisis, vicious identity politics that place it to the further left of the nation as a whole — risk becoming serious liabilities for this ambitious governor.
An hour with the governor reveals five dynamics at play in Newsom-world, including some challenges that he views as potential opportunities for California (and, naturally, himself).
Trump 2020 is good politics for Newsom
Donald Trump loves slamming Newsom’s California — and that’s as good for the Newsom brand as it is for the Trump brand.
Long connected to some of California’s most prominent families — a photo of Bobby Kennedy and Newsom’s late father, William, a state appeals court judge and manager of the Getty family oil fortune, adorns the governor’s office wall — the charismatic Newsom has been a man on the rise for two decades now. He emerged relatively unscathed from scandal — an affair during his time as mayor of San Francisco – and waited out two terms as Brown’s lieutenant governor before winning election handily last November.
It’s a given in California political circles that Newsom wants someday to run for president — and while 2020 is too soon, 2024 could work just fine, the theory goes…if Trump wins re-election, of course.
Newsom seems to relish a public fight with the president — and Fox News and conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, who often takes aim at California, and whom Newsom name-checks repeatedly in the course of an hour. He shrugs off concerns that Trump and the Republicans will exploit the deal Newsom and California lawmakers cut last week on health care for some undocumented immigrants.
“If it’s not this, it’s ten other things,’’ he says. “If I’m going to be worried about Donald Trump’s feelings and Tucker Carson’s feelings and Fox News’ feelings, then I won’t be taking care of the people in this state,’’ he adds. “I won’t be doing justice. to millions and millions of Californians who will benefit from our health care expansions, the biggest expansion [to benefit] the middle class – something no one thought was achievable few years back.”
Still, Newsom clearly pays close attention to the daily drama of Trump’s White House. “[Trump] says he has a great [health care] plan, and maybe it’s in the left pocket, not the right one. He pulled out the deal with Mexico today; maybe he has a deal on health care,” Newsom says.
As any California governor should, Newsom has the “as goes California, so goes the nation” message down pat. After all, California’s politics do have a way of presaging things to come to the rest of American politics — think the Proposition 187 vote on immigration in 1994 or the state’s early debates over fuel efficiency standards.
And in Newsom’s view, there’s a message there: Under Trump, national Republicans “are into the politics of what California was into in the 1990s..and they’ll go the same direction — into the waste bin of history, the way Republicans of the ’90s have gone. That’s exactly what will happen to this crop of national Republicans.”
Still, he’s cautious on the impeachment question. Newsom, who is close to fellow San Franciscan and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, defends her reluctance to start impeachment proceedings. “What’s so remarkable about someone with the experience and temperament of Speaker Pelosi is that she’s seen a lot of movies,’’ he says. “She’s been there. She’s got a better sense than a lot of folks. So I think we should stay the course. What we’re doing is working…I think Democrats are winning right now.”
Health care could be California’s – and Newsom’s – sweet spot
Newsom wants you to know he’s a policy wonk, and he’s using his perch to move the needle on hot-button policy issues that Democratic 2020 contenders — and the House Democratic majority — have far less ability to affect. As the most populous state and the country’s biggest economy, Newsom’s actions carry outsize weight – and are guaranteed outsize publicity.
Consider the national attention it garnered when Newsom signed an executive order in March halting executions – sparing 737 people on California’s death row. Witness the proclamation his office wrote last month “welcoming women to California to fully exercise their reproductive rights” after a wave of conservative states took steps to limit abortion. Newsom is outspoken on immigration, traveling to El Salvador earlier this year in his first international trip as governor.
Newsom is remembered by many for leading the way on same-sex marriage during his days as San Francisco mayor. And now, he is determined to plant the flag on universal health care – something that was not seen as a top priority for Brown — including for all undocumented immigrants.
“We’re going to get it,’’ Newsom insists. “We’re committed to universal health care. Universal health care means everybody…We will lead a massive expansion of health care, and that’s a major deviation from the past.’’
“That’s the real story coming out of California,” Newsom says. “A lot of the think tanks that are informing these presidential candidates, are informing their policies. But California is doing. We’re implementing.”
He’s all in for Kamala Harris in 2020 — really, he is
Newsom is backing Sen. Kamala Harris in 2020, but it’s worth remembering that the two were long viewed as political rivals. Both former San Franciscans enjoyed the patronage of former Mayor Willie Brown as they ascended the ranks of the state party. Harris was also reportedly eyeing the governor’s race before Newsom claimed that turf, declaring his candidacy two years ahead of the election. She announced her 2016 run for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by Senator Barbara Boxer weeks later.
Newson maintains that he’s all in for Harris; he endorsed her early in the Democratic primary, and he’s done his part to help boost her campaign coffers, hosting a recent fundraiser in the Getty home in San Francisco that raised $300,000 in one night. He gives little credence to recent polls showing that Harris is trending in the wrong direction.
Asked whether he will campaign for Harris, Newsom quickly responds: “I have been. Every time I’ve been asked.” He adds: “I’m campaigning for her right now, it sounds like.”
Harris, he argues, has “consistently been in the top five, that’s an extraordinary achievement with eight months to go before the first vote is cast.’’ The former California AG “has shown a successful ability to navigate the white waters…and continue to be part of the conversation against powerhouses — Sanders, Biden, and some of the most well-known brands in American politics,” Newsom said.
Even amid polls showing Biden and Sanders leading Harris among Democratic voters in her home state, Newsom says Harris is not at risk in California’s early primary next March. “She hasn’t really started campaigning” in her home state yet. … She hasn’t campaigned at the level she will be.”
Still, Newsom acknowledges that he has met with South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and read Buttigieg’s best-selling book, “Shortest Way Home.” The former San Francisco mayor jokes that there’s something of an affinity there: “Mayors get it done.”
In the end, supporting Harris costs Newsom little — if she wins the nomination or even the presidency, he enjoys some of the credit, and the benefits of having helped. If she doesn’t, he was still the loyal soldier as he built his own profile.
Jerry Brown’s long shadow
One of Newsom’s biggest challenges is coming out of the shadow of his predecessor, Brown, who spent four terms governing California – from 1975 to 1983 and then from 2011 to 2019. That’s why Newsom is trying hard to project an aura of fiscal prudence amid a laundry list of expensive campaign promises.
Notwithstanding his national “Moonbeam” caricature as an unapologetic liberal, Brown was known in California as a penny-pincher — the proverbial “adult in the room” willing to say no to more free-spending legislators. That approach helped the nation’s largest economy and state budget emerge solvent and successful from the financial crisis and the recession.
And while Newsom’s rein in San Francisco was solidly pro-business, he entered office in January with the Republican party decimated — Democrats now enjoy two-thirds supermajorities in both chambers, and political and policy fights are largely intra-party, with factions of moderate Democrats holding the balance of power on any given issue. Plus, there’s the prospect of an inevitable economic downturn. So the big question in Sacramento has been whether Newsom will be able to withstand the pressure to spend — or whether a newly empowered legislature would run roughshod over him.
Five months in, Newsom and the legislature just agreed on a $215 billion budget, and he argues that they’re toeing the line fiscally. The budget would expand health care for middle-income families and undocumented immigrants, clean up drinking water in rural communities and pay down teacher pension debt, while leaving the state with $19.4 billion in reserve funds.
“We wanted to really get ready to prove our critics wrong — that we could govern without being profligate, that we can be progressive in our values,” Newsom says. “We can’t do everything overnight. But we can do more than people think.”
With the budget situation still rosy, Newsom and the Democratic legislature – including Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and state Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins — are still largely in honeymoon mode and there hasn’t yet been a knock-down intra-party fight. “We all are sort of prone to friction, and I don’t think we’re providing much of it,” Newsom says with a smile.
But that’s unlikely to last, particularly if the economic situation shifts, and California’s budget — which is particularly sensitive to national economic trends – takes a hit.
Either way, it’s clear Newsom is more than a little eager to move beyond the Brown comparisons. Asked about his failure to get a housing bill through this year, Newsom noted that the effort’s been going for three years. “The previous two years you were running headlines about how Jerry Brown fell short, getting that to his desk…right? Forgive me.”
The (bad) California Dream
For all of Newsom’s California-dreaming, he’s well aware that the state’s Democrats have their own problems. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the state’s enormous income equality gap — California had the highest poverty rate in the country last year, according to Census data — and its housing and homeless problem.
Both are on display in the Bay Area, where the riches of Silicon Valley – and the skyrocketing housing prices they’ve driven – sit uneasily next to growing encampments. Amid the expanding homeless population in cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco, Newsom has repeatedly warned legislators that the issue is a stain on the state — and “we own it.”
Asked this week his most effective efforts to date, the governor — whose budget proposes a $1 billion investment to tackle the issue — ticked off a list of policy responses. Among them: “something that’s never been done in our state’s history,’’ a survey of all California surplus property” — including “44,000 specific parcels” that have been analyzed over the last five months for potential housing development.
His budget, which includes millions for tenant protection, assistance to homeless university students and mental health investments, will be supplemented by “novel strategies for new housing types and developments,’’ and helping major cities with planning and infrastructure to build them, he said.
“We’re not naive about our systemic challenges as it relates to income inequality and issues of affordability,” he said. “That didn’t happen overnight, that’s a 20-30-year trend. We own it now, we’re owning up to that. That’s at least a change: no one is denying the crisis.”

A TJSK Guide Book
4/12/2017
The following are some notes from my 4/5/2017 TJSK Guide journal. I’m including a phot of it’s cover in the following blog
The homeless encounter defined: soft, incomplete, obscure, slightly chilling, beautiful.
4/12/2017 7:55pm Starbucks Coffee House
His name was Mike . He was standing on the sidewalk outside Brenda Club Parking lot He was a 6’4” tall blonde. Blue eyes. He had just the clothes on his back.
I took him to Preservation Coffee downtown. Then, we had Round Table Pizza in front of my house. Mike was very pleasant. He was a bit red faced and out there except when he said that he saw a zebra coming. We were sitting outside Preservation Coffee. I turned, and, sure enough two people on horseback leading a young Zebra!
I told my friend who was a clerk at a local gym I was a member of about my encounter with Mike. She was not pleased. She said “be careful”. She thinks she has met and talked with Mike before. He’s been on the street for years, estranged from his mother. He’ into drugs, suffers from paranoia and is a thief. But the man she was talking about was in his 40’s. Mike is in his late 20’s to early 30’s.
I gave him a TJSK bag by the parking garage. Later, at the house, I gave him Troy’s back pack and an old tote green suit case. He was delighted.
The gym clerk re: the homeless “They are unstable. You never know when they could snap.” She kind of ruined my helping high. But, despite her “fearingism”, Mike was a kind, nice man who was extremely wary of me. He still is. He insisted on staying at the Salvation Army shelter after I said that he could stay at my house
My money runs low. I promised Mike a ride to Sacramento Friday and clothes buying tomorrow. Better delay. I gave hime $20, the same $20 I would have spent on the movie “Frank” (I saw it for the first time yesterday.) Mike and I “became” the movie.
So, let it ride.
End of entry
Notes: 9/22/2024
This is the same Mike that I blogged about recently in regard to why the Zebra became the symbol of my homeless encounters.
This entry fleshes out my experience with Mike more fully. Troy was a homeless man who had stayed at my house for 3 days just prior to my meetin Mike.. After I bought Troy a phone, he blasted out of my car port on his bike never to return. He left all of his possessions behind. So, I gave some of them to Mike. The clerk at the gym provides a good example of the push back I would get from some “housed” people. I like how I called this “fearingism”. Hiding behind their fear, they could not know the healing that comes to you in a homeless encounter.
TJSK was a trader Joe Survival Kit bag. I would put food, socks, and toiletries in a Trader Joe bag and pass them out to the homeless.
Brenda Club was a gym that I belonged to. The Clerk in the entry above worked at another gym I was a member of row at the time.
I was low on money much of the time that I was working with the homeless. It left me feeling more connected with them.
I googled the movie “Frank” but can't seem to find it. I have no recollection of what it was about. But. Truly, my experience with Mike “was” a movie!
