I've never been here before

May. May Day. May pole. Mayhem. Melee (May-Lay)

I’ve never been here before. I’ve never known this shade of dark living. Since 1958, I’ve never known a Zoe-less world. I’m not the same person that I was. (before Zoe's death)

In a B J Miller hospice you tube talk tonight, the moderator asked if returning to work aided the mourning process.

BJ said to balance the two. There is a need for grieving and a need for work. Integrate them. He used some other term, but, that’s what he meant.

So, back to work tomorrow.

10:03pm

While lying in bed, I felt someone rub the top of my head. Then, a moment later, I felt 3 taps on my forehead.  I said “Hello Zoe. Are you there?” (There was no one else in the room with me)

Zoe’s been dead for 10 day’s now. What’s it like to have been dead that long, Zoe? Skyler and I had a long talk tonight about how lonely this journey is. No one can understand, comprehend. They don’t need to. I have never felt this before or been here before. The Zoe-less world. I still can’t believe it.

Zoe was born in 1958 and died on May 14, 2023. I was born in 1955.

BJ Miller is an end of life care physician who speaks and writes on the topic of end of life care.

Skyler, Zoes friend, was instrumental in providing end of life care to her.

Skyler and I talked today, May 2, 2024. The one year anniversary of Zoe's death is difficult for both of us.

So odd to think that I haven't talked with Zoe for about one year.

Im posting a photo tonight containing photos of Zoe taken in San Diego in the 1980's. She lived and taught elementary school there for 20 years. I glued her photos to a record containing the sound track from the 1985 movie "A Room With a View". I saw the movie just as I began my volunteer work with men with Aids in Sacramento in 1986. The beauty of that film and its title song , Puccini's "O Mio Babino Caro" infuse my memories of the tragic, brave and beautiful early days of Aids work. And, caught the gentle touch that Zoe gave to life as well.

Here's Cucurucho and Oscurucho's long lore conversation from yesterday! The entire conversation lasted about 8 minutes, but most of that time was just silence between each exchange, so I edited out the long pauses and got it down to ~3 minutes. I also fixed the audio levels and added subtitles since I personally find it difficult to understand Oscurucho sometimes :'D

Devotional for April 6th

God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. - 2 Corinthians 5:19-21

God so loved the world, the sinful, faithless, deeply fallen and ungrateful world, that He sacrificed for it His innocent, holy and righteous Son, as if the great and infamous sinner were dearer to Him than His most beloved Son. He who today sees the Son of God dying upon the cross for all sinners, slain for the dead, and does not learn to read the Holy Scriptures inviting all men to the great Supper, beseeching them, ’’Be ye reconciled to God! " he who does not learn to read this upon the cross, and does not here learn to understand and believe, will never learn. For that which even Moses realized and concerning which he said, ’ Truly the Lord loves the people," is here written in letters of flame; on the cross it is preached as loudly, intelligibly, and effectually as possible. Oh, may you all draw near to the cross of Christ on Golgotha! May you consider Him in the spirit, until that fulness of love by which God loved us in the death of His Son, shall have penetrated your heart, spirit and soul, marrow and bones, and your whole being; and you from your whole soul may say, ’We love Him because He loved us first. " Here words only are of no avail. You yourself must go to Golgotha; you must see the Son of love bleed upon the cross for you; you must tarry with Him, your eyes intently fixed upon Him. His blood, His death, His wounds, the bowing of His head, shall speak to you. Pay close attention, and let everything else in you keep silence.

O sacred Head, now wounded, With grief and shame bowed down.

Now scornfully surrounded With thorns Thy only crown!

O sacred Head, what glory.

What bliss, till now, was Thine!

Yet, though despised and gory; I joy to call Thee mine.
