So Weird on NPR
Before his interview with Make Weird Music Sacha Mullin let us know about his NPR one.
"I have to talk about Annmarie and Alexz because they were involved with my record, so I promise all the So Weird I can mention. They *barely* kept my So Weird talk in during the NPR interview lol."
The This Is What Chicago Sounds Like segment is online and on Spotify. And while So Weird's name was left out, they did leave in all the details.
You can hear it 2 minutes 40 seconds in.
"I did watch enough of this show and the music and it was really folk-rocky. But it hit me in such a particular way, and it starred Mackenzie Phillips from The Mamas & [the] Papas lineage. And I was such a fan!
I watched the end credits because I was obsessed with credits for things. I think a lot of it had to do with disembodied voices in music and television. I was just hearing sounds and going, ''Where is this person? And how do I get to be a disembodied sound?'
So I wrote a letter to the composer Annmarie Cullen, she wrote back to me and we just kept trading letters and she was super kind… physically writing letters and then eventually emails."
We love learning how much So Weird has impacted people's lives. Thanks for sharing, Sacha!

Christmas from the Choir Stall
You don't have to be holier than thou to enjoy a little choral exaltation.
The Swingles' 2016 take on Brahms's lesser-known cousin to Silent Night is gorgeous.

In 1983, Marcel Pérès and Ensemble Organum recorded a new interpretation of some 12th century polyphony. This sample of monody breaking into polyphony (at 0:45) from the Christmas Matins at Saint Martial De Limoges hints at how the church managed to get a stranglehold on the solstice for so long.

14 January 2024: Effusive Supreme, Lovely Little Girls. (Skin Graft, 2023)
Beginning in late December and continuing on well into January, I got enamored by the new album by Chicago singer-songwriter Sacha Mullin. I learned that he has an extensive resume of guest appearances with other musicians, and I started investigating online. One of the projects he's contributed to in the past is Lovely Little Girls, a Chicago avant-jazz group led by vocalist and visual artist Gregory Jacobsen. Mullin doesn't appear on the band's latest album Effusive Supreme, but I was struck by its graphic design and started listening on Bandcamp. My first reaction was that Jacobsen and crew are just way too theatrical and shtick-based for my taste, but I liked the quasi-Beefheartian jazz instrumentals I heard and when I kept waking up some two weeks later with vocal cut "Be Good to Your Shoes" still in my head, I knew what would happen: that copy sitting in the bins in my neighborhood shop would be coming home with me. If one counts all the band's CD-Rs and self-released items, according to Discogs this is the sixth Lovely Little Girls album since their formation in 2001.
Jacobsen's visual art focuses on grotesque, "body horror" imagery, and on the album artwork here you get plenty of examples. Above we see the front cover, with Jacobsen's stylized portrait of the band, first with an obi strip spanning the bottom of the cover, and then the unexpurgated cover. I repeat this with the back cover; the rear obi features blurbs from music critics as well as the bar code, and when you remove it you see the song titles and album credits.
Here are a couple close-ups of this. First, the back cover, obi first and without obi second (that second photo is a bit blurry).
Here we see the obi on the front cover, letting us know this copy is the colored vinyl edition.
Next we have both sides of the insert.
Next, both labels.
And now a shot of the marbled green vinyl.
My partner complained emphatically when she saw this album cover in the store a few weeks back as she flipped through the "L" bin. I can't bear to reveal to her that I bought it. I also can't wait until I'm trying to blare "Be Good to Your Shoes" and she inevitably walks in, because I know she will despise the music as well. And last, I want to thank Matt at the neighborhood shop who, when he sold me this record yesterday, said "Ah! I worked with Gregory at the movie theater." I'd been wracking my brain for two weeks trying to remember where I knew that guy from, and now it is clear: back when I was a constant moviegoer, he sold me many a movie ticket.

Sacha Mullin is a singer-songwriter who is changing the art-pop scene with his extraordinary voice and singing skills. He has made it to the top of Chicago's singing scene. With his new record "Casino Wilderness Period," Mullin takes his already famous work to a whole new level. There are lots of fun and exciting songs on this trip. Mullin is famous for his work with alternative musicians like Dead Rider and Cheer-Accident. Ten years of bold musical discovery have led him to this single project. His singing ability is amazing, and it motivates and inspires people. No one else can mix strong jazzy tunes with a light touch like he can. Mullin's newest album is a great piece of modern pop. Some of the artists that helped shape it are Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, and the Sugababes. It has eight tracks. This album was made by Todd Rittmann, who is known as the "master of experimental rock." It has rock, jazz, and deep lyrics. Each song tells a story in its own unique and memorable way. They remind me of show tunes that would work well on stage or in movies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4lDo8sYKeo&list=OLAK5uy_kPpVslrqY1bJmdnWocaRzp005Ojq1zPNc When big names in the field, like Emily Bindiger and Judi Vinar, sing background vocals on Mullin's music, they add more depth and variety to the moving parts. For the album's first song, "Arranging Flowers," Rittmann's powerful drums and Mullin and Bindiger's moving singing make for a great performance. There is a sporadic vintage gem by Glass Void that goes with the song. It fits perfectly with the song's themes of fame, wealth, and mental pain. Another great song is "Telepathy," which has R&B and jazz sounds mixed together to make a full sound. At its best, it has a singing chant that moves your spirit. [caption id="attachment_12137" align="alignnone" width="1500"] Sacha Mullin Redefines Art-Pop With Boundary-Pushing Album 'Casino Wilderness Period'[/caption] "Margaret," a disco-country mix, "Waves," a throbbing number, and "Window Out," a mix of styles that ends with an ode to Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick's famous chorus, are just a few of the album's many great songs. Sacha Mullin's "Casino Wilderness Period" album is a big deal in the music business. It makes people feel like they can go on a trip through different settings, each of which is full of heart, imagination, and real emotion. As an artist, Mullin shows how to be unique and skilled in a world where music types are often and clearly defined. https://open.spotify.com/album/7AuACl5ZrsQ3rDL51N8BvY?si=pPeIdkyBSwqeJz_XBMvcxQ

Sacha Mullin - Casino Wilderness Period (Indie Pop)
The 100 Baby Challenge
Sydney is the daughter of Keshia, #26.
Sydney Mullin:
Things have been strange recently. Kurt, Brendon and I moved in with Auntie Sacha, Uncle Leon and Auntie Leia... and Auntie Sacha passed away. I’m really going to miss her. I loved my auntie Sacha. I wish she’d at least got to meet my baby. Things are going well with the pregnancy... I just hope the baby will be all right because I was certainly shocked after losing Auntie Sacha.

Columbus Crew SC 3, Orlando City SC 2 | 2018 MLS Match Recap
USA Today Sports
July 21, 201810:15PM EDT
Following a 41-minute delay to the kickoff due to inclement weather, a late rally gave Columbus Crew SC a 3-2 win over Orlando City SC at MAPFRE Stadium on Saturday.
Orlando City started the game hot, as Yoshi Yotun’s shot just over a minute in clanged off the post. They found the breakthrough in the 16th minute, as a cross was redirected in the box and Sacha Kljestan stroked in a one-timer to put the away side ahead.
Crew SC tied up the game in the 51st minute, with a goal that was remarkably similar to Orlando’s goal, with Niko Hansen sending in a cross from the right that was turned in by Gyasi Zardes. Just seven minutes later, however, Orlando went ahead once again, as Yotun and Kljestan connected to set up Stefano Pinho. That goal was somewhat controversial, at least from a Crew SC perspective, as they contended Zardes had been fouled on the other end just prior to the build-up, but referee Silviu Petrescu waived off their protests.
Joe Bendik, who came off the bench in the first half after starting goalkeeper Earl Edwards, Jr. suffered an injury, made a key save on Patrick Mullins’ point-blank attempt in the final quarter-hour. But Crew SC got a late lifeline, as RJ Allen was called for a foul in the box by Petrescu, and Zardes stepped in to convert the spot kick for the draw. Then Wil Trapp provided the late dagger in stoppage-time, with a blast from deep to give Crew SC a much-needed win.

90+2′ – CLB – Wil Trapp
Three Things
THE BIG PICTURE: The game did not lack thrills late for neutrals. Orlando City will feel like they really ought to have won 2-1, and probably have merit to their case, but Columbus took the chances they got, and can’t be begrudged for clinching three points they desperately needed.
MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Trapp scored just his second career goal in MLS, and his first at home. The goal for the captain and hometown guy was the stuff of legend.

— Columbus Crew SC (@ColumbusCrewSC) July 22, 2018
MAN OF THE MATCH: Zardes has a case with his brace, but Trapp gets the honors. His ability to show the leadership to keep his team in the game and then tally the winner gives him the edge.

Friend of the So Weird fandom Sacha Mullin hung out with Make Weird Music this month.
Sacha came to our attention a few years ago when he covered Jewel Staite/Callie Snow's "Questions" live with a band on stage. It was the first time we ever heard about a So Weird song being used in public.
He actually purchased some rights to have it recorded and his cover of "Questions" is on Spotify.
In his talk with Make Weird Music Sacha mentioned "Questions" (about 19 minutes in), So Weird (around the 52 minute mark) and its soundtrack.
It was Annmarie Cullen's work on So Weird that got his attention as a kid and eventually lead to him working with her on his recent release. You can hear Annmarie's vocals on the song Margaret.
Other mentions: covering an Alexz Johnson song and Mackenzie Phillips.
Thanks for spreading the So Weird love, Sacha!

"Crow" By Sacha Mullin from Chicago Acoustic Underground on Vimeo.
SACHA MULLIN is a Chicago-based singer-songwriter, arranger, pianist, and educator. At once commanding and vulnerable, Sacha's often been compared to Jeff Buckley and Morrissey – though he more closely studied the heartfelt gymnastics of folks like Joni Mitchell, Heather Nova, and Lisa Fischer. Sacha is perhaps best known for his work with avant-rock groups CHEER-ACCIDENT (Cuneiform Records), and Lovely Little Girls (Skin Graft Records), with whom he did two albums and tours. He has also sung with Bobby McFerrin, Jeanne Arland & Patty Peterson, Hannibal Lokumbe, Ariel Pink, Dead Rider, Lori Dokken, Bobby Conn, Debbie Duncan, Carla Kihlstedt, Daniel Knox, Gabriele Roberto, Sarah Winters (vōx), The Gabriel Construct, and Dessa; shared stages with Lightning Bolt, Kayo Dot, RUINS, and Mitski; has been heard on MTV, CBS, NPR, and Japan's NHK; and is currently a co-host of the comedy podcast N*Sync Found Fan Fiction with Chicago zine queen Liz Mason.

Sacha Mullin covered “Questions” at one of his concerts! “Questions” is the song that Jewel Staite sings in “Siren.” This is the first video I’ve seen of a band covering a So Weird song at one of their shows. Very cool!

Rosalyn on IG shared this video with Sacha who then tagged us because, in his words, "Laughing (cosmically) about being on NPR, only to once *again* not focus on promoting my new album, but instead talking about Disney’s late 90s science fiction show So Weird, ha."
In case you missed it, Sacha Mullin talked about So Weird on NPR and while they edited out the title of the show, they kept the other details.
(The source credit is going to him because Rosalyn's original post was an IG story.)
