It’s with a forceful thrust of the arms that a gift box is taken from the inventory and subsequently presented outward, eyes shut tight as a head snaps to the side. Rip it open to reveal... a book. A scrapbook, to be exact. One plastered with stickers of camellias and sunflowers. And inside that would show numerous photos. A two-versus-two match with both Lucas and Camille riding in on the Mr. Saturn coffee table, peace signs thrown toward the camera. Another with the duo posed together once more after a victory had been gained. 

A snapshot during the trip to Halloween Town, featuring magical girl Camille and chimera Lucas. A regular Halloween image with the two in Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask outfits, before the transformation had ruined his outfit. English lessons, flower gardening, Tazmily visits, trips to the Roost, K.K. It’s a whirlwind of emotions in Camille’s head; it didn’t really take any effort at all on Lucas’s part to sense it. A rush of thoughts and feelings that ( and you could tell with Camille ) were sincere. Nerves, gratitude...love.

It’s with all of this in mind that Lucas accepts the gift box from the stammering girl. He begins to tear at the wrapping paper to reveal the only thing that, in lieu of words, could possibly convey the storm of emotions whirling around in Camille’s head.

A lovingly crafted scrapbook, decorated in Camille’s signature adorable style. A combination of each one’s favorite flower adorns the pages, secures photos in place. And oh, those photos...

Each one was taken at a different moment since this iteration of the tournament began — the tournament in which the two finally grew closer and became friends. Hard-fought matches, Mansion field trips, leisurely visits to each other’s home, holidays spent in each other’s company. Victories, losses, ups, downs...

With his mouth hanging open, Lucas tears his eyes away from the book to look at the girl who so painstakingly crafted it.

Is...is she going to cry?

Lucas came to learn over time how hard things were for Camille and Cammie, having to bite back at needy neighbors before they could bite first. He may not always agree with their ways of handling things, but at the root of it all was a loneliness that he understood far too well. A weight that he wanted to be the one to lift, if he could help it. And now, looking at the scrapbook, it’s hitting him all at once just how much something so simple as being a friend meant to Camille.

He can’t help it. Seeing the aftermath of Camille wrapping up her heart and giving it to him causes tears to form in his own eyes. A smile lightens Lucas’s otherwise tear-streaked expression, and he sets the book down on a table beside him so that both arms are free to envelop her in a warm embrace.

❝ Don’t cry, Camille, you’re gonna make me cry, ❞ he jokes, though it’s too late to stop that from happening at this point. ❝ This’s probably the sweetest thing ya could’a done for me. I — I don’t even know what to say. I mean, b’sides just...thank you. ❞

It was only when the sun went down where the night owl became most active. So it was then that Blathers would find a gift-wrapped present sitting at his feet. It was a small one, nothing too big, and mostly comprised of air should the item be picked up. And something intriguing to note should the eye be keen enough? The present had small holes poked in the sides of its wrapping, needle-thin, best for letting in air. Hm. And finally, should it be opened? Well, there'd be a large, dark-brown, long antennae-sporting, six-legged cockroach for the eyes to see, and once set free, the only thing on its mind would be to escape through any means necessary.

  —Blathers is a simple man (er, owl). He can appreciate the thought behind a gift! Fully waking up for the night to begin work, he expects that to be it, really, beyond maybe a few visits from his friends around the island. But he expects little more; tidying up, and putting any new items on display.

   So, seeing a little wrapped gift plopped down at his feet brings a smile to his face! Best he can manage with a beak, at least. He has to wonder who left it here, and what memento is contained within. Maybe it's a book on the Cambrian Explosion! Maybe it's... something other than a book on the Cambrian Explosion!

  "Oh, how exciting...!"

   Humming happily to himself, he crouches down, carefully lifting the box in his wings. It's surprisingly light; probably not any sort of informational book like he'd thought. He shakes it for a moment, unfortunately for him, to see if it would give him any insight, but no such luck, as it's unsurprisingly quiet even when he does. He can only faintly feel something bouncing around inside. He raises the box up to inspect it closer, simply drawing out his excitement, and only then does he notice the holes poked into the box.

   ...Oh. You can see the bead of sweat forming on his feathered head.

   Surely, nobody would do this to him, right? His fears are definitely getting the best of him. And even if it is, it will surely be contained to one of those delightful plastic boxes, keeping a protective barrier between himself and the evil eldritch abomination lurking within.

   A shudder shakes his body. A wing is raised, slowly, to the top of the box. Though it looks like an invisible entity is physically trying to hold him back, he lifts the top of the gift off, and peers inside.

  “Eeek!” A screech that could honestly probably be heard across the island. Blathers almost immediately begins nervously stomping his feet, looking between the rather pissed off roach and the rest of his museum. An Oriental Cockroach, perhaps? Surely, he has a place for this...

  He wanders into the bug area of the museum, letting out a shriek every time the thing starts ramming against the sides of its cardboard prison. Which was often; not only did it not like its box, but Blathers did go and shake the poor thing. It’s angry, and the poor owl looks like his soul is desperately trying to leave his body.

  He makes it to the area he wants. A damp area, befitting the habitat of the waterbug, looking sort of like a swampy oasis. Sure, the little bastards tend to prefer sewers in the modern age, but the thought of that makes him want to hurl, soooooo... no, to the swamp it goes.

  His feet jump off the ground as the box is rocked by another angry attempt from the roach. This time, he can hear scratching as the thing desperately tries to climb the cardboard. The sound sends the strongest of shudders down his spine, and after a moment, he dips the box, leaving the bug to be sent practically flying into its new home. The sight prompts another screech from Blathers, because of course it does.

  It runs back at the habitat wall as if to threaten Blathers. He lets out one last shriek before darting off to the entrance hall once again. With any luck, he’ll never see that little demon ever again.

  Stop. Lean back against a wall. You’d think he just got done outrunning a hoard of zombies. He really gets this weak-legged over bugs, huh? Can you blame him?

  “What a horrid gift...” He mutters to himself. “I certainly hope whoever sent this washed their hands after handling such a thing. They are known to transfer many bacteria, after all...” Where had his friend retrieved this thing from?

  A pause, then a chuckle.

  “I suppose I will have to care for this in the future. I hope it enjoys its new home, at least... and that its sender comes to visit.”

    “ Oh Jaaaack~! ” The town Mayor called as he waddled up to the Pumpkin King on stubby legs. “ This just arrived for you. ”

        “ Oh my, what's this? ”

   The bright pink letter looked widely out of place within Halloween Town’s macabre backdrop. So much so, it had caught the eye of several citizens who skulked nearby, murmuring to the tune of ‘what’s this’.

   Opening the peculiar envelope, Jack cast hollow eye sockets over the letter and chuckled to himself. “ Ahh, how wondrous the mischief of a child is! It appears our guests are already getting into the spirit of things, Mayor. We’re going to have such marvellous fun indeed~! ”
