Oncorhynchus rastrosus
first art of 2025 is a fish! starting off strong a female Oncorhynchus rastrosus, the spike-toothed salmon. it's commonly misrepresented as a massive sockeye salmon with tusks slapped on, but we know that they didnt undergo any drastic levels of sexually dimorphic remodelling
for those who wonder what males look like, the majority of the dimorphism isnt noticeable as the it's present in internal skull bones and minor proportional differences, however, one way to tell is males only have one dentary tooth and lack the smaller additional premaxillary one

Yeah, just pure vibes until you're an old man who dies a painful death at the ripe old age of 33 - if you don't die as an infant, or by the hands of a saber-toothed cat, or a natural disaster, or possibly cannibalism. So much fun dying a slow death with no pain medication or supplemental oxygen or bleeding to death while being dragged by a saber-toothed cat a mile away to their babies to eat for dinner. And how great for the women too. No protection from the law if your man beats you or your kids, or you get raped. Just pure vibes. And if your neighbor steals your salmon and berries, you just fight to death over it. Fun times. Ah ... the good 'ole days. Kumbaya, man. Kumbaya.

Ancient ‘Saber-Toothed’ Salmon Had Tusk-Like Teeth, New Study Shows
An extinct species of giant salmon called Oncorhynchus rastrosus sported a pair of front teeth that projected out from the sides of its mouth like tusks, according to new research. Prehistoric Fish
Having gone through ... 1,668 pieces of Paleo media (movies, TV, Documentaries, Video Games, Youtube Productions), I've noticed quite a few patterns (naturally). Stock Footage sources (Planet of Dinosaur, Phil Tippet's Animation from Dinosaur! (1985), The Lost World (1925), One Million B.C., etc.), species appearance regularity (everyone uses Tyrannosaurus, but you'd be surprised how common Brontosaurus and Diplodocus are), etc.
But I noticed one pattern that got to be annoying.
Once vertebrates go on land, Fish generally aren't talked about. Like, they stop existing as far as the 'narrative' goes on. If post-Devonian fish are talked about, it's usually one of these:
The Western-Interior Seaway/"Hell's Aquarium"
Megalodon
Carboniferous Shark Diversity
And that's it.
Sure, we get stuff on Whales and Sea-Going reptiles, but nothing more than that and the generic "Ammonite" being mentioned.
I can't help but feel that there's more interesting stuff on the oceans elsewhere.
I know of a few.
Like the Trematosaurids, Gavial-like amphibians that swam in the Triassic oceans. Oncorhynchus rastrosus, the Saber-Toothed Salmon the size of a large Tuna. Inoceramus and Cladoceramus, giant cretaceous reef-building clams that could get 1 meter in length. And Foreyia, the Triassic Coelacanth parrot-fish mimic.
And those are just the organisms I can recall offhand. I feel there's a lot of untapped potential with aquatic animals in media beyond "Generic Herring-like Fish to be eaten by more charismatic fauna."
It's like how Hadrosaurs are used in documentaries only much worse.
So, Paleo-Nerds of Tumblr, what are your favorite unsung aquatic organisms?

The Epic History of the Earth
“When a Billion Years Disappeared”
“That Time It Rained for Two Million Years”
“When Giant Scorpions Swarmed the Seas”
One thing I like about the PBS Eons show is its epic headlines. Not least because they aren’t actually overdramatic. It was technically 1.2 billion years of Earth’s history that disappeared in the Great Unconformity. It rained so hard for so long that a bunch of stuff went extinct. The giant sea scorpions could grow to 2.5 m long.
So, what might the next billion years of Earth’s history hold?
I decided to use the completely scientific technique of giving a list of PBS Eons episode titles to GPT-3, a neural network whose task is to predict new text that goes with whatever came before. Here are some of the neural net’s predicted episodes in Earth’s history/future:
When the World Was Made of Jelly How the Moon Took Back the Sea When Whales Ruled the Skies How a Single Species of Moth Almost Destroyed the Entire Human Race That Time the Earth Almost Turned Into a Giant Pufferfish How Spiders Conquered the Seas How a Soda Can Could Have Killed the Dinosaurs When the Earth Was a Puddle When We Almost Always Had Butterflies How a Cat Almost Destroyed the World's Largest Continent How the Biggest Snake Ever Almost Ate the World's Biggest Croc How the World Almost Had a Binary Sun The Island of Swords
I sampled these episodes at a temperature setting of 0.8, which governs how often the neural network is allowed to use lower probability text. The higher the temperature setting, the higher the chaos. But it turns out chaos doesn't necessarily make the output weirder, just different from the prediction. In early neural nets that meant different from the English they had been trained on, toward more erratic spelling and punctuation. In GPT-3 chaos seems to mean more toward other text that it saw on the internet - and when your starting point is very weird, moving in any other direction might make the output LESS weird. That's mostly what I found at the highest temperature setting of 1.0, although there were a few notable exceptions:
When Salmon Grew Swords and Tried to Take Over the World How Darth Vader Helped with the Founding of America That Time a Mutant Super Robin Nearly Wiped Out England The Vegetarian Dinosaurs Who Refused to Die When the Biggest Terrible Prehistoric Thing Glared Down at Earth Hilda Doolittle and the Potteries That Await Us It's Not Easy With Floofs on the Moon Triceratops and Little-known Fact About Giraffes Megahippus Rode Saber-Toothed Cat Elevator That Time Giant Hungry Sharks Exploded Through Florida
I was also rather fond of the headlines that SOUND epic, yet actually aren’t all that unusual once you think about them. One major source of this effect is the fact that birds are technically a kind of dinosaur.
That Time Humans Chased Down and Ate a Dinosaur When Crabs Got as Big as Dinosaurs That Time A Spider Hunted Dinosaurs How the World's Drunkest Animal Changed the Weather The Unkillable Rock
Supporters get bonus content: Some output from temperature setting 0.8, which produced such gems as “How a Blue Whale's Farts Changed the World”.

Weepy Creek
We met our children down at Weepy Creek. They stood on rocks downstream, watched us. They looked down on you and me. We looked back down at them, then went on. Not knowing there was a future at all. Nightfall was said to arrive at dusk. We had to pitch tents in a hidden location. Somewhere where the bears wouldn’t find us. Even then, we kept calling each other honey. Knowing that just outside, either one of us could get bitten.
Morning came and we wept. Our campsite was littered with the remains of rabbits. That bear knew our location, it taunted us. Weepy Creek was said to be a place that took no prisoners. Those superstitions and why we kept our distance.
Those trees had our faces. They served as spies for the bear. That stalker with a brown fur coat. Jaws as jagged as a saber toothed tiger. We knew we couldn’t stand a chance. Let alone a wrestling match. So we took to the waterfalls instead. Risked our lives and jumped, hoped. Hoped that we could make it back to civilization. Before the creek enveloped us.
We lost our clothes, we lost the war. That bear knew where we lived. Followed us home and looked through our windows. All we had in the end was our love. Even then it was being licked and dissolved. That bear had its tongue on us.
So when we return to Weepy Creek will we see ourselves with the salmon in our mouths? Those same two former selves staring at us? Those were the questions through our minds. We were dragged back by the bear, less than a month later. Den was a word that meant many things. But we let the fire spread, and that’s why he wanted to roast marshmallows with us.

A Wolf Pup Mummy From the Historical Arctic Greater than 50,000 years in the past, a den in sandy soil collapsed on a wolf pup and killed her, sealing her away from air and moisture so the pup’s physique mummified within the chilly. She stayed buried in permafrost till 4 years in the past, when the work of world warming and the explorations of a gold miner uncovered her in Canada’s Yukon Territory close to Dawson Metropolis. He needed a valuable steel; what he discovered was paleontological gold. That mummy is now on show on the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Heart in Whitehorse — physique and fur intact, lips shrunken again so her tooth are seen in what seems a bit like a snarl. The pet is so effectively preserved that it’s straightforward to inform from visible commentary that she is feminine. She additionally has a reputation, Zhur (which means wolf) within the language of the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin folks, in whose ancestral land the wolf was buried. Amongst fossil animals, Zhur is “principally one of the best preserved wolf that’s ever been discovered,” mentioned Julie Meachen, a paleontologist and professor of anatomy at Des Moines College in Iowa, who led a workforce of specialists in utilizing noninvasive strategies, together with DNA, biochemistry and bone construction, to review all the things that might be discovered in regards to the historic wolf pup. She and her colleagues revealed the outcomes Monday in Present Biology. Angela Perri, an archaeologist at Durham College in England, who was not concerned within the examine, however has collaborated with Dr. Meachen on different initiatives, mentioned the examine of the pup was an instance of how scientists have change into in a position in recent times to achieve again into deep time and paint a vivid and detailed image of a person animal. The researchers, she mentioned, had been in a position to ask not simply, “What had been Arctic wolves like?” however “What was the lifetime of this wolf?” The primary stroke of luck, mentioned Dr. Meachen, was the invention, and the preservation of the pup. Due to local weather change, the permafrost in the Yukon is melting, as it’s world wide. In Siberia as effectively, warming has uncovered troves of beneficial fossils. The miner who discovered the mummified pup, Neil Loveless, notified Grant Zazula, a paleontologist with the Yukon territorial authorities, who contacted Dr. Meachen. She and Dr. Zazula put collectively an interdisciplinary workforce of Canadian and U.S. scientists to review Zhur. Utilizing a wide range of strategies, equivalent to carbon relationship, DNA research of the evolutionary age of the fossil and chemical research of the oxygen ranges within the specimen, they zeroed in on the time Zhur lived, some 56,000 to 57,000 years in the past. It was a light interval in an ice age known as an interstadial, when temperatures had been heat sufficient for there to be flowing rivers and streams within the space. By X-rays of the bones and the event of tooth in Zhur, they knew she was between 6 and seven weeks previous on the time of her loss of life. She was in good well being and effectively nourished, and the soil by which the den was dug was sandy, and due to this fact unstable, so the researchers concluded that she more than likely died when the den collapsed. The destiny of her possible littermates, mom and the remainder of the pack is a thriller. Learning her DNA confirmed she was an arctic wolf of the Pleistocene, the identical species as as we speak’s grey wolves, however not a direct ancestor. Simply as people got here from Eurasia in a number of waves, so did wolves. Her world was one in all massive herbivores and different carnivores, a lot of them gone, equivalent to saber-toothed cats, cave bears and American lions. Wolves of this time did prey on massive mammals like caribou, however a have a look at the chemical compounds preserved in Zhur’s bones confirmed that her weight loss program was heavy on creatures from the ocean, more than likely salmon. There are wolves as we speak that reside on salmon at sure instances of the yr, when the fish are swimming rivers and streams to spawn. As soon as the coronavirus pandemic is over, you’ll be able to journey to Whitehorse to see Zhur in individual, however for an early glimpse, the interpretive middle may have a Fb reside occasion Monday, Dec. 21, at 3 p.m. Japanese, with the workforce of consultants who studied the fossil showing from their areas.
