This article, published by UC Davis Health in August of 2024, details the experience of a man, Casey, with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and how a brain computer interface helped him to communicate. And not only communicate, but do it with up to 97% accuracy.

While this BCI was certainly an invasive one, with sensors implanted in Casey's brain, the technology is life changing. Prior to the BCI, Casey could not communicate with his words and his speech was severely impaired. Within minutes of activating this system, though, he was able to communicate the words he was thinking into text that is read aloud from a computer.

Prior to the application of the system, Casey had four microelectrode arrays placed into the left precentral gyrus—a brain region responsible for coordinating speech—in July of 2023. The arrays then record the brain activity from 256 cortical electrodes.

The article does mention previous attempts and research into this sector: "Despite recent advances in BCI technology, efforts to enable communication have been slow and prone to errors. This is because the machine-learning programs that interpreted brain signals required a large amount of time and data to perform," (Yehya, 2024).

In total, there were 84 data collection sessions with Casey, spanning 32 weeks. It is recorded that Casey used the speech BCI to conversate both in person and over video for over 248 hours.

Through the duration of these data collection sessions, the system got better and better at accurately collecting and reciting Casey's words. "At the first speech data training session, the system took 30 minutes to achieve 99.6% word accuracy with a 50-word vocabulary," according to the article. "In the second session, the size of the potential vocabulary increased to 125,000 words. With just an additional 1.4 hours of training data, the BCI achieved a 90.2% word accuracy with this greatly expanded vocabulary. After continued data collection, the BCI has maintained 97.5% accuracy," (Yehya, 2024).

The end of the article details direct quotes from the team that carried this out as well as from Casey himself. He said that not being able to communicate is demoralizing and that technology like this will help people get back into life and society.

While this technology—brain computer interfaces—isn't new, this breakthrough in accuracy for BCIs is. I anticipate that BCIs will become a huge part of the medical sector soon, hopefully with accessible and widespread use among those who would benefit most.

I just finished watching Paul Bradshaw's video, and my mind is blown. It turns out that Sky News used AI facial recognition during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding coverage. Imagine this: as the camera pans over the guests, AI instantly identifies who’s who and shows their info in real time. It basically turned the royal wedding into an interactive experience!

But don’t think this is exclusive to major networks. The video mentioned that Switzerland's SRF (Swiss Radio and Television) used a random forest algorithm (sounds fancy, but it’s just a collection of decision trees) for investigative reporting. This shows us that with the right tools, even smaller media outlets can break big news!

That said, we have to stay sharp. As powerful as AI is, it can’t replace our independent thinking and fact-checking skills. After all, the soul of journalism lies in human insight and storytelling, right?

The idea of an "inference engine" is one that was brought up by our Professor, Sean, when I told him about the themes of my last few blogs. More specifically, in the context of my last post: Nissan vehicle's collecting data about their drivers' sex lives, for example.

Although it was explicitly stated in the previous post that Nissan did not explain how they collect the data, one explanation could be the inference engine. An inference engine is "a component of a computer system designed to apply logical rules to a knowledge base, to deduce new information or make decisions" according to ITU online.

Although we may not think of a vehicle as a computer system, it certainly is a type of computer system. In fact, our vehicles have various computers called electronic control units (ECUs) that have several jobs (e.g., controlling the engine, rolling up windows, unlocking doors), according to Popular Mechanics.

Now that is not to say that there is an inference engine within your vehicle, because I truly cannot find the answer to that, but that data collection involved with coming to that conclusion (about the drivers' sex lives, again) could be related to a type of inference engine.

I find it hard to even comprehend how a vehicle could come to the conclusion surrounding the intricacies of sexual encounters and whether that very driver is driving to of from one.

This topic made me think of an excerpt from our textbook: "Computers started diagnosing diseases, listening and speaking to us, and writing high-quality prose, while robots started scurrying around warehouses and driving cars with minimal or no guidance. Digital technologies had been laughably bad at a lot of these things for a long time—then they suddenly got very good," (The Second Machine Age, pg 12).

Most of us are aware of the advances we are seeing in technology. Or at least vaguely aware of the direction we are headed in. But perhaps we aren't aware of just how much they are doing behind the scenes; tracking, analyzing, and concluding things about us.
