Random headcanons & art

Near

1. Near is the president of the university’s robotics club.

2. He never attends lectures in person, only watching recordings.

• Near prefers solitude and finds social interaction draining. Watching lectures at his own pace allows him to stay focused and avoid distractions.

3. He plays competitive online chess between classes.

• Near enjoys mental challenges and chess offers a way to test his strategies and keep his mind sharp while relaxing.

4. Near’s dorm room looks more like you just stepped into a Toys R Us than a place where someone sleeps.

• His collection of puzzles, toys, and models are a source of comfort and focus, keeping his mind stimulated even when he’s not working.

5. He wears the same hoodie almost every day, claiming it reduces decision fatigue.

• Near simplifies his wardrobe to focus more on his studies and hobbies, seeing no point in making unnecessary daily decisions about clothing!

6. He never raises his hand in class but always gets the highest scores on exams

• Near doesn’t care at all about showing off or impressing professors; his only concern is understanding the material.

7. Near has a meticulous calendar and study schedule, but only he understands it.

• His methodical approach to everything extends to his study habits, though his system appears insanely chaotic to others, it works perfectly for him.

8. He’s known for sketching detailed robots during lectures instead of taking notes.

• Near finds doodling and sketching helps him focus on the lecture, as his mind works better with a hands-on task to accompany the information.

9. He orders takeout almost every day, refusing to cook.

• Near considers cooking an inefficient use of time and would rather spend his energy on intellectual pursuits or working on projects. (At least that's what HE says to hide the fact he'd probably find a way to burn water whilst boiling it)

10. Near loves to leave cryptic or downright weird messages on the dorm bulletin board for fun (or to freak people out since no one's figured out who the hell''s been doing it)

Mello

1. Mello has a part-time job at a trendy coffee shop/cafe, but he always brings his laptop to work on assignments.

• Mello thrives in fast-paced environments and enjoys the energy of the café, but he’s too ambitious to let work get in the way of his academic goals.

2. He takes pride in his motorcycle and often rides it to campus even if it’s impractical.

3. Mello constantly competes with classmates, turning everything into a challenge.

4. He studies late into the night, fueled by energy drinks and chocolate.

• Sometimes, Mello’s intense personality and desire to outdo everyone pushes him to work harder than most, even at the expense of his health, so I can see him always bothering L or A to root through their med stash on a bad day.

5. He has a secret stash of stress balls, even though he pretends he doesn’t need them.

• Despite preferring to act tough, Mello gets easily stressed/anxious, and stress balls are a discreet way to manage his anxiety. He rather keep his peace and not get his issues looked at.

6. Mello never misses gym days, using working out as a way to release his aggression.

• Physical activity helps Mello balance his high-strung self, giving him a productive outlet for his frustrations.

7. He writes essays/assignments at the last minute because he couldn't actually be bothered but always manages to get top marks.

8. He has a complicated love-hate relationship with Near’s success.

• Mello and Near attended the same high school since Year 8. Mello resents Near for his calm, effortless brilliance but also deeply respects him as his closest intellectual rival.

9. He’s notorious for bringing loud snacks (like Doritos or Lindt) into quiet study spaces, just to annoy people. People being Mikami or A.

• Mello likes stirring the pot and pushing boundaries, even in the smallest ways just for the giggles but will ease up if someone is actually super upset.

10. Mello refuses to share study notes with anyone, even his friends. He rather watch you bleed out or something. Fend for yourself.

1. L sleeps in the student lounge more often than in his dorm.

• His irregular sleeping habits caused by his insomnia mean he’ll nap wherever he is when he’s too exhausted to stay awake, and he values convenience over comfort. Mikami's sick of having him curl up in his shower every time he invites him over.

2. He has an entire drawer in his room dedicated to different types of sweets.

• He CLAIMS it HELPS him think faster and stay alert during long study sessions. Liar. He's just a greedy little fellow.

3. L uses his position as a teaching assistant/tutor to solve difficult academic problems instead of actually helping students.

• L is more interested in challenging his own intellect than in teaching, so he sees the TA role as a way to gain access to tricky questions for giggles. Some poor students are ready to stone him for it....

4. He refuses to wear shoes to lectures and insists that thinking requires “maximum comfort.” If you say otherwise you're committing a hate crime.

• L’s eccentric habits extend to his fashion choices, and he’s convinced that anything uncomfortable distracts from his ability to concentrate, hence choosing more minimalist-type clothing. Sometimes he gets bullied into wearing shoes by Mr. Wammy. Sometimes.

5. L often shows up to class with food stains on his clothes because he’s always eating something.

6. He writes all of his assignments in incredibly small, illegible handwriting, frustrating professors.

• L doesn’t care about neatness, only content, and figures if he can read it, others should be able to, too. Poor you if you can't.

7. L has a habit of texting weird messages to his friends late at night of whatever the hell comes to his brain.

• His thought process often leads him down really fucking strange paths, and he enjoys sharing odd observations or philosophical musings at random hours. Light's just learnt to ignore him but Mikami's a light sleeper and too people-pleasing so he succumbs to the peer pressure and listens to L's nonsense. At least it's interesting sometimes.

8. He never takes notes during lectures but still scores perfectly on every exam.

• L has a photographic memory and trusts his ability to recall important information without needing to write anything down.

9. L never shows up to social events but always seems to know what drama happened at them before anyone else in the friend group.

• He’s highly observant and picks up details from casual conversations or watching people closely, even without directly participating. We love a nosy king who stays on top of campus nonsense.

10. He likes balancing objects in lectures from books to erasers etc just to see how tall he can make his towers. Sometimes even the lecturer gets distracted when they get too tall and wants to see what'll happen.

“yandere beyond birthday headcanon”

content: yandere beyond birthday, kidnapping, reader is a death note user (it’s a bit of a plot contrivance tbh), also there’s a bit of smut (just a glimpse into what bb might be into), it’s the very last part and there’s a warning ahead too - can be interpreted as either dom! or sub! reader.

𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘆𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲:

𓆩†𓆪 now, at first I think it’s good to look at what BBs life has been like to see what traits he might prefer in his darling

𓆩†𓆪 BB sees the date of everyone else’s death - and their names too, and he is able to do so without having done the shinigami eye deal, since he somehow possesses this ability since he was born.

𓆩†𓆪 also, it appears that he sees the date not in the weird shinigami numeric system; but in a way that humans can understand too -> I don’t think that the novel explains exactly how this is done, but he is constantly aware of when the people around him are destined to die

𓆩†𓆪 so, he has lived his life with the constant reminder of the inevitably of death. Quite obviously, that does something to a person.

𓆩†𓆪 he has also lost both his parents - in quite brutal ways (his mom died in a train crash and his father was murdered by a thug)

𓆩†𓆪 i think it’s relatively certain to say that he thinks of people as expendable. they’re going to die anyway; why try to build meaningful connections? the date of their deaths is constantly there. he even toys with different ways of killing people, trying new methods:

𓆩†𓆪 as a result, i believe that for him to be seriously interested in someone, they would need to not be “marked” with a date of death only visible to him; thus, providing him with something that he is not used to.

𓆩†𓆪 so, most likely, a death note user *

𓆩†𓆪 he will perhaps feel a connection to his darling: just like with him, their date of death is uncertain - since he’s not able to see the date of his own death either:

𓆩†𓆪 also, and that’s more of a reason for him to really be intrigued; perhaps he might feel slightly bested by his darling -> they have broken out of the mould, so to speak, he perhaps can’t see them as inherently disposable as he sees almost all other humans. and the novel makes it quite clear that BB does not like to feel bested by anyone.

𓆩†𓆪 so, his darling must probably be a death note user, therefore he can’t see their life span and this intrigues him.

𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀:

𓆩†𓆪 BBs intelligence rivals that of Ls, and he also seems to know very little morals. sure, he only kills individuals in the moment that they were set to die in regardless - but I don’t think that that’s anything to do with morals, it’s just because he can’t kill them at an earlier time than the exact date of death that he is shown - if he tried, he would not succeed.

𓆩†𓆪 safe to say, he probably spends some time stalking you, most likely also hiding cameras in your place, and he feels absolutely no apprehension about doing so -> at first, he only wants to make out just why he isn’t able to see your date of death.

𓆩†𓆪 but, I think it’s likely it’s during that time that he catches feelings for you.

𓆩†𓆪 at first, it’s probably because he isn’t certain when you’ll die - so he’s constantly wondering if you’re still alive. ergo, you’re constantly on his mind.

𓆩†𓆪 he might also fall for you because the unknown date of your passing might convince him that you’re the one person who’s date of death he can influence

𓆩†𓆪 remember, he has no idea that what he has are the shinigami eyes/how exactly they work - he just knows that he’s somehow able to see everyone’s name and their date of death.

𓆩†𓆪 well, everyone’s death date except yours

𓆩†𓆪 it wouldn’t surprise me if he somehow believes himself to be some kind of shinigami - or at least, something of another otherworldly being. the novel supports this too:

𓆩†𓆪 so, he probably becomes convinced that you’re some kind of otherworldly creature too; he finds a weird kinship between himself and his darling. maybe he even recognises this as some kind of “love” -> you’re the only thing that comes close to being his equal, so he must know more - either to eliminate his possible competition or to finally have something more worthwhile.

𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴:

𓆩†𓆪 BB is a master of deception. he probably stalks you until he finds out just what you like in a partner; and then, meticulously, puts on a persona that matches your exact fantasy.

𓆩†𓆪 we’ve seen that he is very, very good at make up - and he’s definitely willing to give 100% if it means making you fall for him.

𓆩†𓆪 he’ll probably approach you whilst he’s in this persona, and woo you off your feet.

𓆩†𓆪 i think that for a few months, he just continues playing this persona.

𓆩†𓆪 he probably tells himself that he’s just doing this to find out just why he’s unable to see your remaining life span - although he might have caught some feelings too.

𓆩†𓆪 i believe that because BB fundamentally sees himself as other than human - not necessarily less than; but somehow above - he is uncertain about his own feelings.

𓆩†𓆪 perhaps he is uncertain about feeling “love” since he sees it as such a typical “human” emotion - or since he’s rather used to constantly putting on an act, for a while, he might believe that he is just really invested in the act.

𓆩†𓆪 i feel that he takes a long, long time until he classifies his feelings as “love”, if he ever does so at all.

𓆩†𓆪 the act that he portrays probably stops once he finds out about the death note -> which he most certainly will, either through snooping around or by getting you to trust him.

𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀:

𓆩†𓆪 as soon as he finds out about your death note, things will probably change quite dramatically.

𓆩†𓆪 for simplicity’s sake i’m assuming that the death note got into his darling’s hands when a careless shinigami dropped it as they died whilst stalking a victim; perhaps some other shinigami would jump in and explain the rules/the shinigami eye deal to them, only to then fuck off back to the shinigami realm when you don’t show any interest in the eye deal **

𓆩†𓆪 whether you don’t really use the death note at all (except once in the beginning to see whether or not it’s legit) or if you even use it on a larger scale like Light did: BB is probably going to see your “divine power” as further proof that you are his equal in some capacity

𓆩†𓆪 if you are not as super-intelligent and manipulative as he is, he will definitely trick you in some way. this is the part where he sees you as less than him; he knows how manipulative he can be, and he won’t relent until he has you where he wants you.

𓆩†𓆪 once he truly realises how rare you are, he will be determined to never let you leave his sight

𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁:

𓆩†𓆪 he’s probably going to take your death note away in some way. he will probably hide it; somewhere quite far away. he’s too worried about you possibly hurting him with it; and that just wouldn’t do.

𓆩†𓆪 it wouldn’t surprise me if he would experiment with it; try to find out its limits - and then promptly disregard it when he finds it uninteresting.

𓆩†𓆪 i think that he would still be interested in you, however. he might deny it, but in the time of him pretending to be your partner, you have grown on him.

𓆩†𓆪 he would probably keep you in a big, nice house, far away from civilisation. he would probably keep you chained to the ground, by using a big long chain; and he’ll be around you as often as possible. no contact with the outside world for you.

𓆩†𓆪 he probably also immediately drops the act of the “perfect boyfriend” that he was playing for you in the months prior; he would probably be delighted to see that shocked expression on your face as you see just how much he has manipulated you

𓆩†𓆪 he is constantly thinking about the possibility of your death; since he’s not sure of when it’s going to happen, he knows that it could come every minute.

𓆩†𓆪 he might play with the thought of having you forfeit ownership of your death note; just so he can see when you’ll die - but he’ll never end up doing it, because then you’d be as boring as the rest.

𓆩†𓆪 assuming that you know of all the rules - and he’ll make you tell him - he’ll probably make you touch it once a year, just to make sure that you stay as its user; so that your remaining life span remains invisible to him.

𓆩†𓆪 truly, a big part of why he keeps you with him is because he likes the mystery aspect of you.

𓆩†𓆪 he’s basically like a child who just found a new, especially unpredictable toy.

𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝗺:

𓆩†𓆪 as i said before; he’s making sure that you have no way of contacting anyone. so, you’ll watch TV, but anything like the internet or anything is definitely off-limits

𓆩†𓆪 with how much he revels in being in control; even long-term “good behaviour” will never sway his mind

𓆩†𓆪 i think that during the first few weeks of being forced to live with him, he would keep his distance - just awkwardly stare at you from across the room like you’re a particularly fascinating painting

𓆩†𓆪 when you tell him to fuck off, he just laughs and says “you had no problem loving me before”; no matter that the version of him that you loved was just an act.

𓆩†𓆪 however, i don’t think that he would hurt you (physically). not really because he is concerned about how you feel (at least, that’s what he tells himself), but rather because he doesn’t know when you’ll die. and by hurting you, to him, there’s the possibility of him causing your death - and then he’ll be ‘alone’ again.

𓆩†𓆪 he probably also has no problem with indulging you in anything that you ask for (as long as you can’t use it to escape, of course) - whatever hobbies you have, he’ll try to make it possible for you take part in them.

𓆩†𓆪 he will still watch you, however. just sit down and stare at you.

𓆩†𓆪 in the first few weeks of you being kidnapped by him, he probably won’t even touch you; this traces back to how he thinks of himself, as other in some way - and physical affection is a very “human” thing to him.

𓆩†𓆪 at some point, however, the damm slowly breaks; perhaps you (spurred on by weeks of extreme social isolation) accidentally touch his arm or something, and he notices the sense of calm that comes with your touch. he justifies this feeling due to how he sees you - on the same level as him.

𓆩†𓆪 from that point on, he’s constantly touching you; one hand on your thigh; hugging you, holding your hand. he often presses his index and middle fingers against your pulse points - he likes the assurance that you’re still alive.

𓆩†𓆪 he will also want to share his bed with you

𓆩†𓆪 sleeping next to him is… an experience. he will cling to you; oftentimes you can’t even move. he is strangely vulnerable during the evening hours, too…

𓆩†𓆪 he probably likes laying his head down on your chest whilst he is laying down on top of you - he enjoys being able to hear your heartbeat as he falls asleep.

𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝗺 (𝗻𝘀𝗳𝘄):

𓆩†𓆪 he will never force himself on you or anything like that. this is in the same vein as the fact that he won’t hurt you - you’re his equal, at least when it comes to your non-visible lifespan.

𓆩†𓆪 he has a rather moderate libido. if you don’t want to indulge in any… intimate activities with him, then he will have no problem just jerking off. he probably will use photos of you (whether they’re more on the ‘seductive’ side or not) to get him going, however.

𓆩†𓆪 in the case that you do want to fuck him: i think that he is willing to go along with whatever you want to do.

𓆩†𓆪 he is a switch; he will go along with what you want.

𓆩†𓆪 i feel like this part of the headcanon is a good time to bring up that quote:

𓆩†𓆪 first of all, i don’t think that that’s how he really feels. yes, i know that i’m inherently biassed because i only write dom!reader, but i can - hopefully convincingly - back my thoughts up.

𓆩†𓆪 BB is pretending to be L here; imitating him - and i feel like he is also kinda making fun of him. he does consider him a challenge, to say the least.

𓆩†𓆪 so, it’s probably safe to say that he’s not telling the truth.

𓆩†𓆪 he does revel in your attention; and if you’re going to pay him attention, then you might as well make him feel extra good.

𓆩†𓆪 still, he’s mainly vanilla, nothing too wild, just… tell him that you like him, that you appreciate him.

𓆩†𓆪 he’s going to go absolutely insane if you tell him that he’s smart, however. praise his intelligence, what a genius he is… then he’s truly happy.

*sadly, I am not 100% certain if he really would be unable to see the lifespan of a death note user, since he himself is not one. yet, he has the eyes. therefore, i would say that it’s somewhat ambiguous. i just decided to assume that he wouldn’t be able to in hopes of making these headcanons a bit more interesting.

**since the shinigami die when they no longer have any stolen years left, i assume that such a thing could happen if a shinigami were to be in a haste to write down more names due to them being minutes away from dying. i don’t know how realistic such a scenario is, but i hope you can overlook that in this case :)

Did B Meet L?

I can only speak for the English translation of Death Note: Another Note: The LABB Murder Cases, but here is what L actually had to say about knowing B.

L does not explicitly state that he never met B. Instead, he says that he does not 'know' B and is simply aware of him, which could be interpreted to mean any number of things. You can meet someone and interact with them and still reasonably claim that you do not 'know them', in the sense that you do not know them well.

In this scene, L insists to Misora that his relationship with B (or lack thereof) will not affect the case; I don't see why he wouldn't be absolutely clear about never having met B if this is the point he's trying to make. Especially if L feels that B's actions reflect on him, which Mello considers here:

Mello also speculates that B may have committed The LABB Murder Cases in an attempt to meet L. However, he admits several times over the course of the novel that his interpretations of B's motives are just that, speculation. This guess is made further unlikely by B's intention to die at the conclusion of the case and the fact that he expected L to send a pawn in his place. Mello assumes they never met, but he has no way of knowing.

Beyond Birthday's disguise, Rue Ryuzaki, is an accurate enough imitation of L for Misora to think of him immediately when she meets L in person at the end of the book. How B learned about L's appearance and mannerisms in the first place, however, is not clear.

So what's the conclusion? Well, it's vague. I do think the book implies that L and B never met, but unless the Japanese translation is markedly different, you can still argue that they may have met without contradicting the text.

A very short uncomplicated analysis, but I do think it's worth talking about!

I have a question with which to distract you potentially! How do you think L and Mello would react to their love interest (by love interest I mean similar to some of your writings, where the relationship status is "serious" but also kind of ambiguous or up in the air) risking their life to save them? OvO

Thank you so much; my patience for grinding has worn paper thin.

The initial reaction is about the same: that was a stupid thing of you to do. The follow up train of thought is where the divergence happens.

L is not the type to get into stupid situations unnecessarily. If his life is in danger that is because of bad strategy on his part, choosing to be in the wrong place at the wrong time or letting a little too much slip. Your decision to try and save him, therefore, is, by extension, a bad strategic move. He would never dream of asking you to get involved with his life in any meaningful way. He doesn’t want you to be involved in the stuff he does in any meaningful way. Not only is your decision to put his life a stupid strategic decision on your part, not only does it mean he needs to rethink any plan he might have to get out of that situation, but it also means that he has made a grave error which has allowed you to be in a position to get hurt. He is not thankful that you might have— he stresses the night have— saved his life; he’s upset that he put you in danger and mad at you for doing something that could have gotten you killed. That is the type of thing that could get him to yell at you. Don’t do it again.

Mello is absolutely the type to get into stupid situations for no reason. His initial reaction has more to do with the fact that he would convince himself that whatever situation he was in he either deserved to be in or was fully capable of getting out of. You don’t need to worry about him, and there’s no point in getting yourself hurt over nothing. Having said that, unlike L, he would be incredibly touched that you would do something like that for him. Yes, you’re an idiot, but you considering his life as being valuable enough to trade yourself for someone like him? If he had any doubts about your sincerity they will completely disappear after a stunt like that. If he hasn’t asked you to make it official, he’s going to. After all, you put yourself in harm's way for him; what better way to prove that he is capable of taking care of both of you than to make it clear who you belong to? Not that you needed to do that or anything. He had the situation under control. Don’t look too far into it.

A/N: AHHHH IM SO SORRY FOR TAKING FOREVER TO UPDATE!!!! I HAD SO MUCH GOING ON IN MY LIFE, TO HAVING WRITTERS BLOCK FOR THIS STORY TO HAVING TO WATCH DEATH NOTE A BILLION TIMES AGAIN TO GET NEW IDEAS! FORGIVE ME! i hope y'all enjoy and let me know what you guys think about this chapter!!!!

Though L had told me he was going to make more time in which we would be able to meet and just get to know one another, but given the situation that we are in, time isn’t in our favor. I’ve been watching the 24/7 surveillance footage we have on yotsoba meetings. I have grown tired of hearing plan after plan, after plan. The Only real interaction or meet was when we would go eat.

“Mmm i think i like the creme brulee cheesecake over your black forest cake.” I mumble as i take another bite of my slice of cake. L on the other hand is just taking chunks out of every slice in front of him.

“ I just enjoy the taste of sugar.” L mumbles with his mouth full.

“ The point of trying cakes is to taste the flavors.”

“ I like sugar.”

“ you said that already.”

“ Then let us discuss something you haven’t heard before Y/N/N. Tell me, how do you think Kira kills? given how much you’ve watched these recordings, i trust that you would be able to come up with a conclusion.`` L leads the conversation.

“ Ryuzaki we said nothing about the case.”

“I believe that at this very moment there’s only one Kira, which makes my theory of writing in something like a book stronger. When Light said “ get rid of it” what does “ it” refer to if not an object . As a result, if we are talking about let’s say some book, then at this very moment the second book hasn’t been possessed or hasn't possessed a person yet.. If Namikawa were the second kira, I don't believe he would be giving Higuchi some type of approval/ or direction of what to do, he would just do it himself.”

“ I agree, I just don’t see how believing in some type of power in an object or being is gonna help us solve the case. If the way of killing can be transmitted between person to person, whether it be through a book or by some type of spiritual possession, the catching of Kira would be impossible.” L argues back with reason as expected.

“ Well it all depends, if we are looking for an object, then maybe the destruction of the object can end the killings. But if it is some type of possession of spirit that jumps from person to person. Then the goal is to look for the type of person the spirit is drawn to. But of course that would be a stretch and as you said, would probably be impossible to solve. But given that at one point Light was Kira, I find it hard to believe that someone who murdered so many people would have no recollection of any of it. Making it be that the person has control on if they can erase their memory and bring it back when needed. Which makes me think that Light could still be Kira without even knowing it anymore.."

“ Y/N/N, I have to say your reasoning on things goes beyond my reasoning. I only deal with the facts and the logical explanation of things. If it cannot be proven then it cannot be used as a fact to support evidence. But you use evidence to create a fact, to make a logical explanation, which is interesting. But it might all be interesting to me, simply for the fact that I cannot believe in some type of supernatural power. But I will leave that to you.” L speaks in a monotone voice, not sounding too fond of my reasoning.

“ I like the bigger picture, not the small details Ryuzaki.”

With a side glance L looks at me but returns to his cake, lifting his feet onto the chair and sitting in his weird position and finishes his cake, with not another word to me. His energy shifted from that of being open to that of being closed off. Was it my tone? No. It was that I’m challenging his logical way of thinking with a more elaborate explanation of what could be and not what is.

Start and end of the fic under the cut:

God, the rain was gorgeous. L wasn’t usually one to remark or note on the beauty of people; people did things and said things that he couldn’t understand. They hurt and killed and lied; and for what? For only themselves. But the world- the non-people part of the world- was utterly beautiful. L knew why the rain fell. It brought the plants to life. And even though sometimes it felt like nature didn’t have a purpose- like destructive typhoons and hurricanes- he at least understood that these catastrophes weren’t self-serving. The rain had no greed or selfishness; nothing to gain, and so the chaos was out of its control. The rain was always his favourite, grey and rhythmic and cool. Any beauty he saw in a human was simply a reflection of the beauty of the rain. Watari, cool and graceful and methodical as himself, nurturing lost children like they were plants below his sky. Soichiro, stoic and sturdy, creating a calm and intentional rhythm for L to think to. These people and others he had admired for sharing the qualities of the rain he loved, but there was one more. A conundrum that L couldn’t quite place.

Start:

Light Yagami. Not just the rain, but a monsoon. He was endless and unrelenting. No matter how many challenges you gave him, he dodged and weaved until the rainwater had flooded every crack in the moulding and invaded your basement. L wasn’t fond of people getting into his basement. He wasn’t cool and stoic and calm, but he came with a surging heat and a blinding sun and a furious intensity. L was almost sure he was Kira, because like Light, like the monsoon, Kira barely seemed human to him. He didn’t seem to be killing for personal or even corporate gain. Kira had convinced himself and the world that he killed for righteous reasons; for saving the good in humanity, but L couldn’t believe that. Kira killed because like Light, like the monsoon, he simply couldn’t stop.

He had never before been so attracted to a person, yet so repelled. If Light contained a duality and, say, Kira was a north magnet, and Light was a south– then L was north. There was nothing his heart, mind, and the deepest parts of his very soul craved more than a friend- or so he told himself- like Light.

But Light was Kira.

Wasn’t he?

Ending:

He knew it. Of course Light was Kira. There was no way around it. L was doomed by this narrative of friendship he had written for himself. Light was so perfect that L couldn’t have beared to lose him. So charming that the barely human, hardly affectionate, happily lonely L had warmed to him. Welcomed him. Shown him the smallest, quietest parts of himself. But Light was barely human too; becoming less and less by the day. And as L grew more and more attached, Light grew further away. A part of him had known from the very beginning how he would die. It wasn’t a slip-up in safety or privacy, it wasn’t a miscalculation, or a misjudgement of character- in fact he had judged Light perfectly from the very beginning. It was trust that had killed him.

His first, his best and worst friend, using him even now. No doubt faking his grief towards the task force. Or perhaps the grief was real. Despite it all, L couldn’t help but clutch onto the glimmer of hope he kept locked tightly in his ribcage, as the light faded from his eyes, that he could still mean something to Light, despite using him and throwing him aside.

Like he did Misa. Like he would his father and Sayu. Like he did his own soul. Like he did everyone once they stopped being fun to play with. L laughed weakly. Kira really was a child.

He had always known he would die right here, in task force headquarters, where he was supposed to be safe, and at Light’s hand, who was supposed to be his equal. He had imagined dying with a subtle smirk, Light finally incriminated, and a successor lined up to catch him. But in his ideations of death, not once had it occurred to him that it might hurt so much.

The grief, the guilt, the regret, and most of all the gaping wound that Light created, ripping into him with his bare hands and clawing at the insides of his chest, twisting a knife right into his gut as he pretended to care that he was gone.
