It's confusing times for the Jdrama world, as TV stations scramble to cope with the void created by cancelled Olympics while simultaneously trying to cobble shows together while restrictions are occurring. The disconnect between Japanese variety shows - where strict social distancing and handwashing is evident - and the drama world is stark, with all of the dramas I've seen so far this year trying to ignore what's happening in the real world. August 2020 saw some popular works come to an end. BG 2 finished up rating 15.6% while the much awaited Haken no Hinkaku rated a comparatively disappointing 12.7%. New on the block is the sequel to Hanzawa Naoki, which is holding its ratings above 20%. I tried for what must be the 3rd or 4th time to watch this series, but still could not get through the first episode. That is not to say this series is without merits, only that I'm probably too ignorant of economics and business to appreciate it. I've also watched the first episode of Keiji 7-nin 6th season, and I don't have much to say about it except that the quality remains consistently good across the seasons, so a good watch if police procedurals is your thing. Ryuu no Michi Stars: Tamaki Hiroshi and Takahashi Issei Synopsis: the owner of a factory and his wife committed suicide after being driven into debt by a large company. His twin sons attempt to get revenge ~20 years later. I couldn't finish the first episode, even on fast forward. These are 2 amazing actors, but maybe I'm just not in the mindset for revenge dramas. Takahashi portraying Tamaki's role prior to "plastic surgery" was an impressive act. The plot feels like Ouroboros (with Oguri Shun and Ikuta Toma), but the stakes feels much higher because neither of the main characters actually have much power or authority. I really miss seeing Tamaki in mainstream stuff, but lately he seems to be committed to dark stories about broken people. Hopefully his October drama Gokushu Fudou would be a nice return to more light-hearted themes. Watashi no Kaseifu Nagisa-san Stars: Tabe Mikako, Oomori Nao Synopsis: Aihara Mei is a high achiever in the pharmaceutical company she works in, but has no time (and no capability) to manage her domestic affairs. A male housekeeper Nagisa shows up on her 28th birthday. A bit of a dark horse this season and possibly reflective of a time where the general audience just wants something sweet and happy, this drama managed to rate ~13% despite its leads not being huge. I've quite liked Oomori in a couple of dramas I've seen previously but it's unusual to see him in a rom-com. He brings an affable sweetness and innocence that not many Ossans can manage at that age. There's quite a lot of cute comical moments, and is well worth the time if you just want something to take your mind off the craziness going on outside. Oyabaka Seishun Hakusho Stars: Muro Tsuyoshi, Nagano Mei Synopsis: Obika Taro single-handedly brought up his daughter after his wife passed away. Very concerned that his daughter will now go to a co-ed college after having had all of her education in a single sex school, he enrols in college to keep an eye on her. This has all the trademarks of Fukuda Yuuichi, so if you enjoyed the Yuusha Yoshihiko series, or Kyou kara ore wa! (or Saiki Kusuo no Saina or Gintama) then this is for you. Otherwise, the humour might be a bit hard to get into. It's full of WTF moments but as often is the case with his movies or shows, the pacing always seems just a tad off-kilter, so that there are moments of slowness, moments of a joke going on for too long, and moments where you haven't had a chance to appreciate the laugh before it spins away into something else. Part of that I suspect is because he relies a lot on his actors to ad-lib for comical effect. To that end, Muro Tsuyoshi is great, but not everyone is able to bounce off him. A bit surprised by Aragaki Yui's appearance (maybe she wanted to pick up an easy job in the lull?) but would love if this was a gateway for her appearing in Gintama 3, if that ever happens.

He was most certainly not a foreigner, but he had heard about their greetings before. He always wanted to try it out, but he had always feared people getting mad. He knew a bit about Ryuu from TV and he seemed nice. Nice enough to not get mad for kissing his wrist. A safer option than the cheek, he couldn’t believe some people did that for greetings!

“Hehe, it’s nice to meet Tsunashi-san! It’s nice to meet you, I’m Michi Sakurai,“ he said, though Ryuu already seemed to know who he was. He was still fairly new and hadn't gotten to meet the other talents at the agency, such as the famous TRIGGER. He was glad to meet Ryuu first, he wasn't as intimidating as Gaku and Michi wasn't sure how to approach the 'angel' Tenn. Ryuu had always seemed approachable on tv and it still seemed that way.

"So, were you taking a break? I'm taking one too," he said, sitting on the couch beside him but not too close. He was aware of personal space and didn't want to invade Ryuu's by accident.

jdrama 2020 spring

For those who haven't been paying much attention to what's happening for Japanese TV, and more as a record for my future self who may want to look at the disaster that was 2020, the spring season had meant to be the pre-Olympic season. Given that the Olympics would attract the attention of most Japanese audiences, the TV channels had invested most of their hopes (and budget) in this season. Much awaited sequels for Hanzawa Naoki, Haken no Hinkaku, the Japanese remake of Suits, and BG were to lead the season, while star-studded casts filled out the rest with Ryuu no Michi, Unsung Cinderella, MIU404 and Miman Keisatsu. Almost every A-lister was on the roll. But, like many things in the last 3 months, that was not to be, even as Japan admirably took reins of its earlier explosion and kept the local outbreak under control. None of the above listed shows except Suits managed to screen, while smaller scaled shows managed to scrape past the quarantine and make their way to the networks. Bishoku Tantei ~ Akechi Goro | Official site Stars: Nakamura Tomoya, Koike Eiko The premise of this is one of those silly things that can only arise from a manga. A private detective goes around solving cases that are related to food, and in the first case he accidentally creates his arch nemesis, a beautiful woman who connects with her psychopathic inner self and finds a second career as an assassin for hire. She enjoys killing people, so why not, she reasons, do it while helping others who want to kill people but don't know how to go about it. I only recently watched Legal High, and it was only then I realised that not so many years ago, Koike Eiko went by sexiness rather than good acting. It's remarkable how much she's come from that, especially if you watch her act in Toma's recent Watashi no hanashi ga nagai. This series brings her back to the femme fatale or murderous vixen trope, which she clearly enjoys. Unfortunately, there's not much else to enjoy about the series. Nakamura is far less interesting here than he was in Nagi no Oitoma. What might have worked as a manga with its dramatic grandstands and aggressive flirtations come across as awkward and difficult to believe when transplanted to real life. There is also not much "life" in this series...the story exists in its own bubble of reality, and the world around it seems empty and soulless - again a set up that works with manga but feels poorly fleshed out in live action. Silent Voice 2 | Official site Stars: Kuriyama Chiaki I have a fond spot for Kuriyama, who has always been one of the more versatile actresses of her age. The first season was enjoyable - Tateoka Ema might come across at first glance to be a wallpaper, but she has a special skill of extracting information from suspects by their subconscious reactions and gestures. It's as if the American Lie to Me was crossed with Amami Yuki's KinTori, Kuriyama manages to dominate the camera by the way she controls the flow of the investigation or reacts to the information presented. Almost all of the scenes take place inside the interrogation room (one reason why this season managed to screen without glitch), but still remain gripping for 40 minutes each time. Tateoka's side kick has changed from Shirasu Jin to Baba Toru, as the former has joined a cooking show set in a fictional town of European characters played by Japanese actors...so, let's not start. Byouin wo Naoshikata | Official site Stars: Koizumi Kotaro, Takashima Masanobu I had no idea what to expect when I went in, and I was pleasantly surprised. Apparently based on some true events, the story is about the revival of a small district hospital by a brave hospital director who brings in a number of radical reforms. It sounded mind-numbingly boring, but turned out to be a remarkably pleasant watch. It's nice to see Koizumi go back to playing his type (instead of his recent roles as the mastermind villain) as a smiling, unflappable, optimistic yet realistic and big-hearted gentleman. In fact, Arihara is so perfect it's hard to believe someone like him exists in real life, yet it is also very hard to dislike him. One amazing scene was when he, as the new vice director, gets confronted by the entire frontline staff over his decision to pare down and standardise medical supplies, and one of the senior nurses challenge him with, "What if we make a mistake because we're not used to the equipment?" He smiles graciously and says without a hint of irony, "Let's avoid that from happening; after all, we're all professionals." In the hands of anyone else, it's hard to avoid making that line sound patronising or passive aggressive, but there's something about Koizumi's manner that makes you believe it's heartfelt. I'm not sure how the Japanese health system works, and it seems quite different to what we're used to. The impression I get (and feel free to correct me if you're familiar with the system) is that there are numerous small privately owned hospitals, which has the right to refuse to accept or refuse to treat certain emergency patients. As one recent newspaper article alluded to, during the height of the Covid outbreak, one ambulance circled the streets of Tokyo for hours before finally a hospital agreed to accept the patient. Beyond that though, I'm getting to the stage of life (or career?) where management is interesting, if only on a theoretical level. Good doctors do not often make good medical administrators, and doctors also classically respond poorly to being managed, but whatever health system you work in, hospitals are a money-draining exercise, and sometimes these result from considerable wastage and inefficiency. It doesn't quite have the drama or stakes of Ikeido Jun's underdog series, and that's to its benefit. It's smaller scale and as a result much more intimate and relatable, as though this story might take place on your neighbourhood.

quite frankly you opened a door to hell that should NOT have been opened in the first place.

to start off with, playing Mario Party within the PM itself is what got playing games in the headquarters BANNED. It doesn’t get any better even if they’re playing it in small groups. 

Black Lizard:

it’s Michizou’s idea always, to start off with. Gin always ends up with horrible dice luck and she already sucks in a technical aspect too. the CPU beats her in placement. Hirotsu likes to seem like he’s uninterested every time Michi tries to get him to play but he’s really not because he always wins which makes Michi get progressively more pissed off and keeps making him and Gin do more games. Hirotsu’s somehow just Good Bapey. Michi has definitely shot a hole in a TV because of losing because whew, he’s such a fucking sore loser!

Dazai + Ango + Odasaku:

definitely the most calm group when playing split up. it’s even between Dazai and Odasaku when it comes to winning but only because Odasaku manages to always land on event spaces that give him free stars. Ango is confused and irritated while clearly not understanding the fundamentals of the game as all he tries to do is rack up money and thats it. Odasaku and Dazai congratulate each other when the other wins. Ango just wants to get back to his job while also not admitting he’s lowkey upset.

 Kajii + Chuuya + Mori

you’re probably wondering why the hell i paired these three up. very simple answer: Mori and Chuuya only agree to playing with Kajii to help circumvent another experiment of his which ALWAYS ends up in an explosion. his terms are if he loses he wont do it. But the problem here is that Kajii always wins. He has never lost a game in his fucking life. Chuuya’s ready to sock him in the face every fucking time the results screen shows up and Mori’s only pissed off because Elise keeps complaining about how he’s a loser and Mori just can’t believe he’s being shown up by Kajii and it lights a spiteful fuel ain’t nobody ever wanna see. Chuuya usually is in second place but apparently no one can beat Kajii: the god of Mario Party.

Elise + Yumeno + Kouyou:

vodka aunt forced to supervise the children. Elise manages to win most of the time. Yumeno gets really upset but at least he knows how to contain himself. Yumeno wins whenever Elise doesn’t. when that happens, Elise starts cry screaming and legitimately threatening to kill Yumeno. Mori would allow it if they didn’t need Yumeno. :’ ) Kouyou thus is always sitting in between them while also not having a fucking clue how to play. Ryuu sometimes passes by and she makes him play for her regardless or not of if he wants to.
