During the April lull, I went through the list of top rating dramas in the last 10-20 years and caught up on a few I hadn't watched the first time around. Haken no Hinkaku (2007) Stars: Shinohara Ryoko, Oizumi Yo, Koizumi Kotaro Synopsis: Omae Haruko is a "legendary" casual worker who only ever holds onto a position for 3 months, leaves on time for lunch and for home, but somehow still gets more things done than everyone else and has multiple unexpected certificates under her belt. Apparently the drama that the every popular Doctor X had copied the premise from, there are multiple similarities between Omae Haruko and Daimon Michiko. They are both extraordinarily good at their jobs, and they make mockery of normal Japanese workplace expectations for hierarchy and overtime. I don't know what I expected though, because I was disappointed by Omae Haruko as a character. Maybe she made more sense to the Japanese audience? The script forces her to hold a lot back, whether it is her feelings, her thoughts or her history. She walks through the series with an emphatic deadpan except at moments where she's associating with people outside her S&F job, where she could be sweet and smiling. I think this series launched the careers of Oizumi and Koizumi (I only just realised that one of them is Oizumi - big spring - and the other one is Koizumi - little spring), and they're both delightful here, Oizumi in his bullied melodramatic best, and Oizumi being unusually charming and placid even for him. Overall it's an interesting examination of the somewhat unique workplace culture of Japan, the many pitfalls and prejudices, and the inequality (at the time) between the permanent and casual workforce. Dragon Zakura (2005) Stars: Abe Hiroshi Synopsis: a lawyer who is recruited by a private school to sort out its debt decides to take matter into his own hands and create a special training class to get those select students into Tokyo University I only put Abe Hiroshi as the star, but the cast is fleshed out with would-be mega-stars, including Hasegawa Kyoko, Nagasawa Masami, Yamashita Tomohisa and Aragaki Yui. The story apparently deviates significantly from the manga. Yamashita and Nagasawa's roles are substantially bigger than the others - if you're here hoping to see Gakki in one of her early pre-fame roles, you'd be disappointed. I've only watched Masami in a few recent things where she's happily picked up bit roles. Let's just say I was pleasantly surprised by her in this, and I can see why she's decided to go down the Serious Actress pathway, as opposed to Gakki still slogging it out as sweet-everyone's-favourite-waifu-idol type roles. Not that there's anything wrong with that, given Gakki probably gets more $$$ from all the commercials because of her wholesome image. I thought this would be similar to Gokusen, but it isn't. Whereas Gokusen was content with the idea you could be bad at school, but you were okay if you kept your good heart, Dragon Zakura blasts all this shounen manga idealism away with depressing realism, but also things I wish people taught us when we were in our teens and thought we could easily change the world. To survive in the adult world, there are rules you need to follow, and as Dragon Zakura points out, often the people who make the rules are smart people, who make the rules to convenience themselves. If you want to change the rules, you need to become one of them first, then you'll have the power to change things. If you are happy to stay dumb, then you will never understand the rules and you will live the rest of your life being cheated of things that you have the rights to, and you will always end up worse off. This is something I think every kid needs to know, because unpleasant as it is, it's frequently true.

At the party with Kotaro, which is an annual tradition, Ninomiya, Fuma Kikuchi ("TimeleszW"), Takashi Yoshimura ("Heisei Nobushi Kobushi"), and "Gambareruya" (Mahiru, Yoshiko) reunite at the Koizumi family's favorite Chinese pub. Thanks to Kotaro's kindness: "Please feel free to drink from my father's bottle," this time I borrowed my father's bottle again. Then Yoshimura, who was attending the event for the first time, looked at the former prime minister's bottle and said with great excitement: "This was the prime minister when I came to Tokyo!" He excitedly recounts his memories from twenty-five years ago, when he happened to run into Junichiro on the street shortly after moving to Tokyo from Hokkaido. When Ninomiya makes the usual call: "Okay, let's drink Oyaji's soda," Kotaro reveals a joyful information: "He was happy when he saw Nino-san for the last time."

Before listening to Kotaro's story, we decided to look back on this year for Nino-San. Ninomiya playfully said, "Luckily, i got to work with you," but Kotaro, who acted alongside Ninomiya in the drama, said, "I think the summer was really hard, i worked with him and even in between, he films other works. It's amazing because he doesn't show it," he said, admiring his vitality. Ninomiya surprised by revealing, "I did five concerts in the summer. In the end, i acted the whole time, from March to the end of December." Meanwhile, Kikuchi and "Gambareruya" will be starring in a drama for the first time, with Kikuchi as the lead. Mahiru praised Kikuchi, saying, "It was amazing, he was a different person from the variety show. He was in the lead as the main character." Yoshiko also said, "There were all sorts of people in the room in front, and Fuma-kun was really spinning." Kikuchi had a busy year, not only singing and acting, but also auditioning new band members. Reflecting on the turbulent year, he says, "Last year, we didn't even announce that any of the members would be leaving this year, and it was quite a turbulent year. The band's name was decided." Yoshiko burst into tears after watching the video. "I never thought i'd cry because of Fuma Kikuchi," she says, reenacting the famous audition scene and bursting into laughter.

This year, Kotaro's variety show appearances increased dramatically. "It changed a lot for me. It was the first year i filled my yearly schedule with variety and travel shows. It was the year i changed shifts," he said. According to the program's research, in addition to filming dramas, he appeared on more than 270 programs through November, including MC specials, title programs, and guest appearances. He was surprised by the figure, saying, "I feel like I'm going to get sick if i listen to that much. I've worked so hard." In May, i went to Australia with Ninomiya to promote a drama, and in September, i went to Hawaii to film a variety show. While filming on location, a slender woman wearing sunglasses and a hat came up to me and asked, "Do you recognize me?" "To be honest, i thought it was a woman i had a relationship with in the past," he said, feeling excited as the woman's true identity is revealed, taking off her sunglasses in front of Kotaro. Also, Kotaro, who has a busy work schedule, opens up about why he never refuses to appear on variety shows no matter how busy he is, and how he prepares for variety shows.

Kotaro loves golf so much that he has his own TV show, and although he is very busy, he never misses a game of golf. "Even if i don't have a day off, I will play golf early in the morning, even if it is only half the time. In the summer, even if i play one round at four in the morning, i will be finished by eight in the morning. . After that, i go filming or go to the studio." Kotaro's love for golf was as follows. At the end-of-year party, he was a big hit. The members of the "Nino-san" episode can't help but say, "I understand why he keeps getting offered variety shows" and "It's like a musical film." There are so many fun and quirky episodes.

Also, Ninomiya directly says to Kotaro, "Can i ask you something?" Something happened last year that made me think, "What?" What changes in Kotaro made Ninomiya worry? Kotaro, who made a big impression at the New Year's party with his unique views on love, seems to have changed his mind, saying things like "I don't go shopping with women" and "I've gone to the cinema with women and left in the middle many times." Series of conversations. He once again speaks honestly about what kind of love life he would have if he had a girlfriend. I started watching Black Pean, or Black Forceps the other day and binged until episode 7! It was so good!!! I can’t wait to finish it!

Nino was so good as Tokai! I can’t say I’d want to be friends with him if he were a real person but he’s an amazing character lol! Usually I think of Nino as the cute little prankster so to see him play such an intimidating character was so interesting! He’s such an amazing actor 😭😭

Sena is really good too! I love how Tokai starts to trust him! He’s just a little guy and he’s learning! It’s so cute when Tokai trusts him to stitch up the patient in the ER even though he’s an intern. Takeuchi did an amazing job as Sena. :))

Saeki is such an ass like ughhhh he’s such an arrogant little shit and he knows it. I love his character though! Seiyo Uchino plays him so well! The man is so versatile! Like he’s such an arrogant ass in this show yet he was also in What Did You Eat Yesterday? as like the sweetest gay man in the world 😭 (He’s handsome too ngl)

And Takashina. Just Takashina. I know he might not be everyone’s favourite. But he is mine. He might just be the Snipe guy to a lot of viewers, sure he’s a bit misguided and kinda all over the place. He’s a mess, but he’s my mess. If Takashina has 100 fans I am one of those fans. If Takashina has only one fan, I am that fan. And if he has no fans. I am dead. I love this man so much I, no joke, had a dream about him the other night. Kotaro Koizumi, don’t ever change, you beautiful man. 💕💕

This drama addresses the argument of technology versus skill and talent where it comes to modern medicine.  With the race to become the most influential and innovative hospital, the doctors of Tojo University are pitted against each other.  

Ninomiya Kazunari did a great job in his role of the methodical and ruthless Tokai Sensei.  Here he is so charismatic and cruel.  He is super cool!

I particularly liked how Tokai interacted with the empathetic Takashina Sensei, portrayed by Koizumi Kotaro.  Takashina made for an interesting foil to Tokai, especially in his ventures of backing new technology at the hospital.  

Like many hospital dramas, this drama can become a little formulaic in it’s week to week episode structure, yet overall this was an interesting and compelling drama.
