News - Studio Ghibli is set to become a subsidiary of broadcast Nippon TV (NTV), with Nippon TV becoming a majority shareholder in the company. From the link above:
According to Suzuki, the acquisition will “allow Ghibli to continue to concentrate on making movies.” Yoshikuni Sugiyama, CEO of NTV, said he “would continue to support Ghibli’s works and protect the environment in which Ghibli could continue to make movies.”
This isn't the first time NTV has acquired an anime studio--in the past, they also bought majority stakes in both Madhouse (in 2011) and Tatsunoko (in 2014).
It's unclear if this will have any big changes for Studio Ghibli moving forward. I guess we'll see!

Nippon TV’s News Every Segment on Tamagotchi Attracting Foreign Tourists in Japan
We said it once, and we’ll say it again: Don’t call it a comeback, call it a takeover! Nippon TV, a television broadcasting company in Japan has just recently aired a segment about the social phenomenon taking place in Japan as foreign tourists are purchasing Tamagotchi’s like never before!
News Every is a television program that airs on Nippon TV that features news everyday Monday through Friday! The segment was really interesting. Foreign tourists were interviewed at the Bandai Namco Cross Tokyo Store the opened up back in November 2023 about their attraction to Tamagotchi!
youtube
The forge in tourists explained their love for the brand and nostalgia of the toy, their attraction to the unique shell designs, and how they are so happy to see them on shelves from when they were a kid back in the late 1990’s. As people are taking more and more about them, it comes a social phenomenon, you just have to have one!
It’s a really cute clip, and we really love to se the popularity of Tamagotchi. It is really interesting that some of these foreign tourists may not realize that the Tamagotchi Original may be available in their country!

Promotional poster for 24 Hour Television Love Saves the Earth, 1978
This 24 hour TV light entertainment / telethon program was first broadcast from 8pm Saturday 26 August to 8pm Sunday 27 August 1978. It was planned as part of Nippon Television Network's 25th anniversary with the concept that it was to expose television viewers to the realities of how the elderly on welfare, people with disabilities, and those in developing countries lived. In part it was an adaptation of the previously televised Labour Day Telethon which began in 1975.
Most of the Japanese industry's top talent turned out to perform on the show and it also included appearances by Tezuka Osamu, C3-P0 and R2-D2, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, Godiego, professional wrestler Dick "The Destroyer" Beyer, and a lookalike President Jimmy Carter. As you can tell from the poster, Pink Lady also performed and was the program's headline stars.
Now in it's 43rd year, the program continues to broadcast at the end of August annually.

"Miyazaki’s son, Goro, has repeatedly been mentioned as a possible successor, but has “firmly rejected the idea,” the statement said. “It is too much to shoulder by myself. It is better to leave it to somebody else,” Goro, an anime director, said, according to the statement. Nippon TV described Ghibli as a studio that “we can be proud of”, adding that its autonomy would be respected after the acquisition. The broadcaster will receive 42.3% of voting rights in the studio, which will become its subsidiary. It has not disclosed how much it will pay for the acquisition."

From the classic Japanese film Caveboy and Gorilla-Man Battle the Evil Robot (1968).
Actually it's a still from Jungle Prince, a tokusatsu television series from 1970. It was produced by Nippon Denpa Eiga, ran for 26 episodes, and was one of the last series filmed in black and white.
Nippon Denpa Eiga, the folks who gave us Giant Phantom Monster Agon aka Agon the Atomic Dragon (among others), went bankrupt in 1990. I've haven't been able to learn what happened to its assets, which are usually bought up at bargain prices by other companies and people. But apparently no one bought Jungle Prince.
To my knowledge the series was never released on home video, and it is considered lost. That's a shame, because I really would've like to see this Tarzan-wannabe and his gorilla pal tackle the robot.

Sho Sakurai goes to the romantic Miyajima Island on a two-day, one-night school trip with Shinichi Hatori, Eiji Kotoge, and Takashi Yoshimura on the "1 Oku 3000 Mannin no SHOW Channel" special
"The Nippon Television" variety show "1 Oku 3000 Mannin no SHOW Channel" "Adult Social Studies Field Trip SP", featuring Arashi's Sakurai Sho, announcer Hatori Shinichi, Biking's Kotoge Eiji, and "Heisei Nobushi kobushi'"s Yoshimura Takashi, will be broadcast from 14:35 p.m. to 16.00 p.m. on japanese time and on 6.35.-8.00 a.m. on european time 27.10.2024. This time, they will go on a two-day, one-night trip around Hiroshima and Hyogo.
Miyajima in Aki, home to the World Heritage Site Itsukushima Shrine, is a popular tourist destination visited by approximately 4.65 million tourists annually. It is counted among Japan's Three Most Scenic Views alongside Matsushima (Miyagi) and Amanohashidate (Kyoto), but we embark on a journey to discover why Miyajima was chosen as one of Japan's Three Most Scenic Views and why Itsukushima Shrine was built on the sea.
Arriving on Miyajima by ferry from the mainland, Sakurai and his friends are astonished to discover that, although the island is inhabited, there is absolutely no "that" on the island. What is that "that" that does not exist on Miyajima, which is known as the "island of the gods"? Having suddenly come into contact with the mysteries of Miyajima, Sakurai and his friends learn about the unknown relationship between Miyajima and Taira no Kiyomori, and the secret hidden in the large torii gate that stands on the sea, as they walk along the approach to the island with historical writer Kawai.
The shrine building style of Itsukushima Shrine, which incorporates the Shinden-zukuri style of the Heian period, is one with the sea and the mountains, boasting an unparalleled beauty. When you look around with your back to the worship hall, you will see a mysterious sight. Yoshimura, a history lover, is excited to learn the reason why Miyajima was chosen as one of the Three Most Scenic Views of Japan, and the romantic untold story behind it.
Afterwards, they will enjoy the trip atmosphere by eating local gourmet food at the Omotesando shopping arcade in Miyajima and making their own original rice scoops. They will also enjoy piping hot conger eel rice at a famous conger eel restaurant that is frequented by many celebrities.
After filling their stomachs, they head to Mount Misen, which towers behind Itsukushima Shrine. It is said that if they reach the top of the mountain, they will understand why Miyajima is called the "Island of the Gods." They take a ropeway to the middle of the mountain, and then walk for 30 minutes to the top. After seeing some amazing sights and finally relaxing in the hot springs of a long-established inn, Sakurai and his friends head to their next destination, Kobe.
The second day of the trip starts in Kobe. They elegantly enjoy the "world's best breakfast," created by a French master and said to have captivated the French president and Hollywood actors. After a luxurious morning, they head to their destination, Kawasaki World. It is an experiential museum where you can "see, touch, and learn" about the products created by the Kawasaki Heavy Industries Group, well known for its Kawasaki motorcycles. Kotoge, a motorcycle enthusiast who had been bossed around by the history-loving members up until now, is excited to see it.
The predecessor of Kawasaki Heavy Industries was a shipyard established in 1878 (Meiji 11) by Kawasaki Shozo, known as the king of shipbuilding. How did Kawasaki Heavy Industries, which was originally a shipbuilding company, become famous for motorcycles? Learn about the surprising history of the company, which not only made ships and motorcycles, but also made everyday items that everyone uses at home and Japan's first ○○, as well as its incredible achievements in Europe.
The company that Kawasaki Heavy Industries is currently focusing on is "that business" that is attracting attention as the next generation of energy. Learn about Kawasaki's amazing technology, which is a world first and has an eye on the future.

Tamagotchi Featured on Nippon TV’s Kintore Show in Japan
Prime time! Tamagotchi was just featured on the television show Kintore in Japan on Nippon Television Network. The idol group King & Prince are the main personality of this television program and they try many new things in each episode.
On the episode the aired on Saturday, May 4th, 2024 the idol group King & Prince were competing against A! Group. The question in the quiz was asking what era Tamagotchi was born in. Was it the Showa era or Heisei era? Showa Era refers to post-war Showa around 1926-1989, Heisei refers to the era from 1989-2019, includes the 90’s, culture such as Shibuya fashion, and more. The answer is of course the Heisei era (which includes 1996 when Tamagotchi launched)!
You can watch the full episode on TVer.
