Chiyoko Hibiki (Ryoga's mom) - Character ref sheet
I've had the idea for Ryoga reuniting with his mom planned for this comic since, like, 2017. So it's very satisfying to finally be able to share her with y'all.
Her design has gotten a couple of revisions while I waited (im)patiently for her to appear. She originally had glasses, but I decided I didn't feel like drawing them (lol) plus she has a really nice eye colour and I didn't want glasses to block their view. Her overall "look" has stayed pretty consistent overall, though. I basically just removed her glasses and gave her some choppy bangs. And a cute button nose.
I liked the colour of her glasses frames, though, so that wound up being the colour of her speech bubbles! She still needs glasses, but started wearing contacts in her late twenties or so.
Her hair colour is naturally the same shade as Ryoga's, as you can see from her outgrown roots. She bleaches it chapatsu style, which is something young women in Japan were doing around the early to mid 1990s. Chiyoko likes staying on top of the trends, and I wanted her hairstyle to reflect her "rebellious" nature. She had a shotgun wedding at 20 years old during the 1980s, so you can imagine she caused her parents a bit of grief back in the day.
You can tell how long she's been away from home by how grown-out her roots are. It's rare to see her with freshly-bleached roots--there's almost always a few inches of growth, at least.

❀ ⋆ ―  「 @xshoujiki  & @gazaardoll-and-gardenias  」 ❛ sᴛᴀʀᴛᴇʀ ❜

Purple Lilac - love at first sight.
Ryoga’s mother had always been kind-hearted.
Despite the living situation they were in, she had told him one night that she was taking in the child of a mother she was close friends with. They were traveling to another country but didn’t want to upend their child’s life, which made no sense to Ryoga but he didn’t think about it for long. This was his mother’s home and she was allowed to invite whoever she wanted into it, even if he dreaded having to meet a new person and figure out what personality he’d be dealing with until their parents were back home.
To say he was surprised would be an understatement; it was more like he was whacked upside the head with his back turned despite the warning he had received. Looking back at it now, when you first appeared in his life, you hadn’t looked special. You looked tired and like you had packed your things in a hurry, but you were polite, even granting him a smile (which was not most peoples first reaction when meeting him). There wasn’t an ounce of fear in you despite his size, or the direct way that he talked, or any other factor that made delinquents on the street immediately challenge him to a fight (that they always lost).
Ryoga doesn’t think about how struck he was by you until he’s in bed that night, or his new bed which was now the couch in the living room while you got yourself comfortable in his actual bed. You had appeared awkward about it, insisting the couch would be just fine for you, but it didn’t sit right with him to let it happen. He wouldn’t claim to be a man with great manners but it’s not like he was an animal – he knew how to treat guests. You seemed reluctant but when Ryoga had grabbed a spare blanket and had taken his place on the couch, there was no more room for argument, and your voice had been soft as you thanked him for his kindness.
Now that was something he really didn’t hear every day.
After you’re in bed he’s thinking about you. The way you walked, the outfit you were wearing, the sound of your voice and how it changed the slightest bit when his mother wasn’t around. It was like you were comfortable with him right away, not unusual considering your ages were similar but he wasn’t used to people being comfortable around him. He was either getting cursed at, ordered around, or altogether avoided. The meat you made that night was delicious, and you were going to be more help with taking care of his mom, who had only been getting sick more often in the last few weeks, so he couldn’t say your presence was unwelcome. Maybe you could be the good kid that he never was.
There had to be something more to that, maybe just because he was attracted to you and it wasn’t something he was used to. Romance had never really fit his image, never grounded itself in his head, it didn’t seem like a concept meant for him. Imagine someone who looked like him having a crush. Not to mention he was horrible at flirting even if he attempted to try. He couldn’t get words out in normal conversation, how the hell was he supposed to be smooth and charming in front of someone he was infatuated with?
He doesn’t know why he’s having these thoughts. They’re annoying, interrupting his sleep, and making him shift around at the concept of you walking into the living room to see him staring up at the ceiling rather than sleeping. He huffed, turning on his side, trying to settle himself into the couch that he was far too big for.
Ryoga didn’t believe in love at first sight… but what else could this be?

Most Harem anime present everyone as an option for the protagonist, though sometimes there is preferred option or head girl.
In Ranma 1/2, as you said, the harem is generally there for the sake of antagonizing Ranma and Akane's relationship like the rivals. Infact even the fathers tend to get in the their children's relationship.
The Ranma/Nabiki engagement plot was in both the manga and anime. In the manga, Nabiki had even more outrageous behavior such as trying to pimp out Ranma to Shampoo, Ukyo and Kodachi. The anime version removed/replced this scene, in line with Nabiki being generally nicer in the anime like Shampoo and several others.
Both the manga and anime reveal that Nabiki was not actually interested in being Ranma's fiance and her plan was Akane would buy him back from her, she actually thinks she went too far when it seems she broke them up for good.
Yeah, I remember Nabiki pimping Ranma out to the other suitors. Again, something that didn't really bother me as a kid because I didn't really understand it, but looking back as an adult it's like "Wow, that's super gross."
As I recall, Ranma 1/2 was kind of just. Like that. It's kinda like 8-Bit Theater. Nearly every character is an extreme over-the-top caricature of an asshole in one way or another, and the comedy is driven by the wild antics these characters inflict on each other with their behavior.
The main male protagonist is a guy whose dad absconded with him when he was little and promised his mom that he'd chisel him into a REAL MAN, and if Ranma fails to meet a certain threshold of masculinity then they'll both commit ritual seppuku. His mother even carries the seppuku blade with her whenever she comes to visit.
His father's method of teaching him masculinity is by training him in esoteric martial arts, such as tying a bunch of fish to him as a child and then throwing him in a pit full of cats - An unconventional form of training, to be sure, but one that successfully awoke in Ranma a deep and profound... uh... fear of cats.
The main female protagonist is a bitter misandrist who hates men because one day an unwanted harasser at school made a declaration that any man who wants to date her must first defeat her in a fight. Naturally, all the boys listened to him rather than, like, asking her opinion.
So now every time she goes to school, she has to physically fight off assaults from harassers trying to beat the shit out of her and declare their love. Consequently, she has a deep and frothing hatred for the entire male gender. But also, like, you get where that's coming from. I'd probably hate all men too.
And those are the two most sympathetic characters. It's a rabbit hole of broken people expressing themselves by trying to murder each other by way of mystical arts where you blast your foe with weaponized self-pity or erasing each other's memories with amnesia shampoo. One time Ryoga tried to cast a love spell on Akane that would make her fall for him but then accidentally hit Ranma instead. Genma created two entirely separate Forbidden Arts for breaking into people's homes and stealing all of their shit. There's an entire set of cursed springs all in one location carrying various curses based on whatever drowned in them in ancient fable, including a pig, a cat, a duck, a statue, an octopus (!?), and a yeti riding a bull while carrying a crane and eel.
Ranma 1/2 was a fucking trip. XD

There are alot of kittens this week at the Diorama Restaurant!
Note: In case you aren't familiar with Japanese or don't watch anime, "Kun" means boy and "Chan" means girl.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, this is the only litter that has a momma. I'm not sure if she has a name, but the staff just call her Okaa-san which means 'mother.' Her babies are named Morn-kun, Wicke-kun, Koa-kun and Pippi-chan. Pippi-chan is the only Calico and only girl, and her brothers are all white like mom.
These two cuties are Kaira-chan(red collar) and Mashu-kun(blue collar.)

And these three kittens are Honoka-chan, Ryoga-kun and Temari-chan. Ryoga is pretty shy and Temari seems pretty laid back.

Odd question for OOC on Ranma and Ryoga— how in advanced do you usually save these asks for the blog? Like with the current story arc are these older inquiries you saved to start shaping the story? Just generally curious as I’ve always been interested in the process and am looking forward to this arc 💖 keep up the great work and strides in art improvement!
It depends on a few factors, but I try to have a buffer of at least a few weeks ahead to keep up with early access updates for Patreon.
I used to get a few months worth of weekly updates queued up, during the end of the Beach Arc I was maintaining that, for instance. But now I’m trying not to get TOO ahead so that I don’t lose out on asks coming in too late to be used, because by the time they get sent in I’m already too far ahead of what their question pertains to. I fell into this trap a couple times during Ryoga’s mom introduction. Some Chiyoko-related questions came in when I already had the near the end of the arc drawn out and scheduled to post.
For the Body Swap arc, I really want this storyline to get really interactive with the ask box, so I dont want to get too ahead of things so folks get a chance to send stuff in. The asks are really gonna be what creates the chaos for this storyline so I’m excited to see what people send in to add to the hijinks.
I just finished pumping out a good chunk of updates, so right now, I’ve got public updates queued until June 2nd. And I only did that cause I’m going camping this month so I wanna make sure updates are taken care of lol

Today is kinda…sorta…well, not at all really, Ryoga’s birthday.
On this day in 2017 I went to feed the cats, and there was this little piglet! Now, this is a farm, but not that kind of farm, so this was not our pig.
Okay, he was our pig. Mom couldn’t find the owner, and so WHAM, we had a pet pig. Or rather I did. I bonded with the little fells really quickly.
Excuse the poor photos. The top two were taken moments after I found him. The bottom one is the most recent I took, and sadly thanks to technical difficulties I can’t share better ones. I wish this pic gave even a hint of his current size.
I never wanted a pig in my life, and yet now one is my best friend. Go figure!

12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
- i wouldn't call these two disliked, just rarely mentioned. i like kogane (the ghost girl from two of the filler eps) bc she's funny and i think her friendship w kasumi is sweet!!! I also think kodachi is very funny and ppl only include her when talking abt ranma's suitors like 30% of the time bc they forget she exists 💀
22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
- .........huge pet peeve of mine. Ranma knows he's in love w akane. Like from less than 10 eps in. Ryoga goes "wait a second.... you're in love with her too!" and ranma blushes and tells him to shut up and tries to change the subject to fighting. Fanfic writers ARE aware you aren't meant to actually BELIEVE him when he says stuff like this, right????? Right?????????????? Please say sike rn or i'll accuse u all of sleeping thru ur high school lit classes. Why are there SO many post canon fanfics where he's unsure abt how he feels abt her when he straight up indirectly told his mom he wants to marry her in vol 37 ("son, could it be you dont want to marry her?!" "I didnt say that!!")

28th- Death upright | Endings, change, transformation, transition How’s the future for Zexal characters? Show us what you think a Zexal character (or several) are doing post-series or how they look when they grow up?
I believe most of them are still living in Heartland (but still travel elsewhere etc) and I thought of some cool careers and things they could be doing:
Yuma - pro duelist this was a given considering it was his dream, only fair to make it come true when he's grown up
Astral - warrior/protector, interdimensional researcher his role in Astral-Barian World remains the same. After the worlds were forcibly fused together, there need to be someone to keep all that Chaos in check so that the Astralians don't disappear. He also helps with pooling interdimensional knowledge since he, himself, is not human and lives in somewhere other than Earth
Kotori - kindergarten teacher I think she would make a good teacher and her likeable and caring personality would be popular among little kids and their moms
Ryoga - marine biologist and/or interdimensional researcher Shark was never extremely passionate about dueling and I believe all that drama throughout the series would definitely drive him away from dueling professionally again, I do see him as a scientist though. As Astral, he has experience first hand with being non-human (formerly)
Kaito - engineer, interdimensional researcher already things he was from the start of the series, so no massive changes except for his age and being more experienced (eventually taking over his father's laboratory)
Rio - pro duelist, model, actor, athlete she showed how much she is capable of so it's only natural that she would hone those skills and have an active life doing several different things. She preferred modeling for environmental causes, acting in stage/theater and competing in winter sports
Tetsuo - pro skater, model, maybe also pro duelist I think it would be so much fun if Tetsuo started skating professionally and I can totally see him rocking urban/alternative apparel and making a lot of money/fame as a model
Tokunosuke - "entrepreneur" he's still swindling people, just a little bit smarter about it
Cathy - pet groomer of course she will work with animals, what did you think?
Takashi - paralegal don't see him as a lawyer but I do see him working in justice. That was pretty much a given, considering his personality
Anna - pro duelist and stunt performer it would be freaking hilarious to see her as a stuntperson so, why not?
Haruto - interdimensional research assistent by choice, Haruto doesn't get involved directly in his family's research, so he takes on a organizational and administrative role more
III - historian, researcher, writer I like to think that III had a very important role in the ongoing discovery of all interdimensional things due to his profound knowledge of the past and how it influences today. He never sought fame but it comes to him anyway with all his published papers
IV - pro duelist, model all that interdimensional stuff? He's not interested in the slightest. IV duels his way to the top of the top and, as usual, he's very smug about it. He can be, he's that good
Durbe - professor (perhaps a specialist in linguistics) I can't see Durbe as anything else than an academic, he just has that vibe going on for him
Vector - ??? who even know about Vector. He's rich, somehow. He comes and goes as he pleases and when people ask he says something like "don't worry about it ;-)"
Alito - bartender, dancer I'd love to see Alito excelling in all kinds of dances, receiving accolades because of just how skilled he is, and working in the local nightlife seems like it would suit him
Gilag - bodybuilder, strongman yeah, that's about it. He's got the muscles for it, he should use them
Mizael - interdimensional researcher it was surprisingly tricky to figure him out? And I feel like he takes on a more mixed role, not too hands-on and not too detached either. He's mainly helping the Tenjos with in-field research
most of the other characters I didn't mention here are most likely following the same path as the show.. Fuya is still an actor; Faker, Byron/Tron and V are scientists and interdimensional researchers; Droite is a manager and Gauche is a pro duelist/wrestler
in most my headcanons, everyone was resurrected by the Numeron Code including Don Thousand. I'm unsure of his role but he would stand together with Eliphas in Astral-Barian World, their roles as the most powerful beings (akin to gods) would be to maintain the harmony. Ena would be more of a messenger and mediator. As Vector, Number 96 would be mysterious, but he mostly stays in that world, challenging Astral to duels here and then

STMPD Recommends Ranma 1/2 Fanfiction: Nemo Blank's Chaos Factor (Or, Ucchan is Best Girl)
Okay. Time for some changes around here.
Yes, that's right. You're not dreaming, dear reader. In my neverending Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath to waste my own time on the internet, I've decided to expand on beyond writing reviews of Bubblegum Crisis fanfiction to review... other fanfiction. My powers grow, and grow, and grow.
Okay, huge forewarning, let's just get it out of the way, I don't actually read a whole lot of Ranma fanfiction. I used to read a lot more, but my tastes always tended toward the somewhat shitty fanfictions, not the actually good ones. So I'm probably just gonna recommend two incredibly good Ranma fics, and then move onto other pastures. There's a particular Homestuck-Pacific Rim crossover I've always wanted to sell people on, stuff like that.
Anyway! Here's a good Ranma fanfiction, incomplete but uproariously funny and maybe too clever by half: Chaos Factor.
Well, then. What exactly is Chaos Factor about? It... um... well... fuck. Hang on.
Were this a fic with weaker writing, I would have a pretty hard time overlooking CF's tendency to veer wildly all over the place in terms of setting and what its attention is focused on. So let's start at the beginning: Ranma goes off to train in the mountains, is accosted by a soul-stealing demon, is saved by his Neko-ken being a giant spirit tiger that mauls the shit out of the demon - and wakes up to Ukyo Kuonji, everyone's favorite crossdressing Kansaiben okonomiyaki chef childhood friend waifu, holding him close to ensure his well-being with a side of pressing her cleavage into his side.
Of course within five seconds Shampoo, Akane, Genma, Soun, Mousse, and Ryoga all show up. Of course there's an altercation where Akane falls into a river, Ranma saves her, and she yeets him into the stratosphere. Reader, Akane is many things in this fic, but she's hardly a kind soul. Which - is okay?
Yeah, let me just get this out of the way, I don't really like Akane. She's a girl out of her depth in Ranma's insane martial-arts world, a normal, sane human being whose dignity is constantly put to the test by the irrationality that is Ranma, his rivals and fiancees, and their goofy superpowers. Oh, sure, she can be cute at times, but more often than not she's the worst sort of tsundere, the childish one who treats any entreaty towards what little order she has left in her life as an affront on her person and then proceeds to beat up Ranma. Oh, sure, the manga probably treats her better, but that doesn't change the fact that Ranma saving her again and again and again and neither of the two admitting they might like each other over and over and over again is not really a healthy relationship dynamic. Sure, the other girls are possessive and jealous too, but at least they can keep up with Ranma to a closer degree, at least they're honest with their own affection. Well, whatever, this argument has been had since Internet Time Immemorial and will likely be thus for years to come. So... Yeah. One of the best quotes from CF (and there are so, so many) speaks to this: "It was true love, all right. True love for eight-year-olds."
Anyway, Ranma lands in his mom's backyard (this is after the manga's failed wedding ending, mind you), and they talk. Turns out Ranma thinks he's got this duty to the Tendo family to join the schools (his dad lied), turns out he doesn't know how to deal with love (he likes the Tendo sisters, but only knows that he doesn't know if he loves Akane), and... suffice to say that Nodoka finally says: No, Ranma, you're staying with me from here on out, and each fiancé will meet me in person and I'll determine their suitability one at a time.
Which would be a perfectly interesting pitch for a fic, you'd think, Ranma having to arrange all those meetings and Nodoka meeting the girls as they try to be on their best behavior. Only, we only get to Kodachi and Shampoo in interviews, because other plot threads are introduced fast. Very, very fast. Blisteringly fast. Among the things that just happen and don't stop happening:
Ranma gets yeeted into the middle of the Sailor Senshi, assumes they're a bunch of fiancés or pervs or whatever, and proceeds to avoid their attacks effortlessly. As Ranma's rivals and the Senshi get more and more intertwined, it becomes clear that a) Crystal Tokyo relies on wiping out everyone save a few million loyal to Serenity, something Sailor Pluto is largely hiding from her charges, and b) The Senshi are terrible at actual fights. Ranma simply summons Happosai (calls his name three times) and misery is had. Now, I don't especially like how the Senshi are sort of the butt of the joke here, especially since many gags are made out of how utterly unstoppable Kuno is by conventional standards, and those jokes are quite funny. But you can't have everything.
As such, when Ranma beats up a Youma without trying very hard, he ends up on the national news. Nabiki's having the time of her life playing the tour guide for the Tendo Dojo, right up until the government decides Ranma could be a useful asset in the war against the supernatural.
Washu from Tenchi Muyo ends up in a time warp where she inadvertently becomes Nodoka's mother (and Ranma's maternal Grandma!) Ryoko thinks having a nephew-niece is nothing short of awesome, and she and Sasami hang out with him and Ryoga for a bit.
Ryoga's wandering capacity is played up as a space distortion, to the point that he can end up in anywhere while going to anywhere else. Kasumi follows him to the bathroom of their house and ends up going through Egypt for a few moments, Mihoshi follows him to an alien planet, things like that.
Ranma flees normal life again, is tracked down by Ukyo using a somewhat terrifying ninja technique involving sympathetic ki, and they fight a samurai ghost together. Ranma figures out how to turn into a dragon and Ukyo falls even more head-over-heels in love with him, because, uh, dragons amirite? Meanwhile, Ranma is convinced that Ukyo wants Ranma to be a waitress for her, and that's cleared up... but Ranma still is afraid of her world, especially because Ukyo wants to become the head of a national okonomiyaki restaurant chain.
And it's all... funny, and sweet, and even if the tone it nails isn't exactly the manga's irreverent tone, as far as harem-adjacent tales go let it be said that Chaos Factor has a tone, and it nails that tone, and it keeps on that tone for 81k words. even if it ends somewhat anticlimactically before, if I recall correctly, Ranma and his fiancés are to have an audience with the emperor.
Look, I'm having trouble describing this fanfic that I've read a half-dozen times over because it's simply that good. I don't just encourage you to read it -- I implore you to do so. You won't regret it.
