HGUC 1/144 E.F.G.F. Prototype Close-Combat Mobile Suit RX-78[G]E "Gundam Ex"
Gundam Ex is here!! I had a lot of trouble pre-ordering this one, but luckily found it in-person at a Black Friday sale so picked it up and cancelled the pending order. Ever since the trailer dropped I've wanted to add this to my collection, alongside the 08th MS Team suits.
This kit has some of the best features of modern HG gunpla. There's excellent colour separation, with some cool part shapes on the arms and head to create the two-toned dark and light grey paneling, as well as some of the red accents on the chin and torso. There's almost no colour-correcting stickers, apart from a yellow one to colour the raised E.F.F. insignia on the shield and another to depict the targeting sensor on the beam rifle, and two red strips for the side skirts.
There were some details that needed to be painted, including the a whitish section on the bottom of the shield (which unfortunately turned out a little bluer than I intended due to the paints I had on hand), and the grey vent details on the face. I also ended up painting all the yellow sections by myself, to avoid them looking too shiny from the foil stickers.
The foil stickers also detail the eyes and front camera in a reflective red. There are 3 eye options for each of the compound eye camera activation styles, but I ended up using the option with all three cameras activated, as the eyes are rather small as it is, so this helps the eyes be more visible.
I also ended up painting the blue flame effect on the beam saber effects. Unfortunately, while in the show they're depicted with a prominent blue glow to their base, the included effect parts are a single transparent pink. I think they look a lot better with the transparent blue though.
As usual, I detailed this kit with my Tamiya weathering sets D and C, and some drybrushing in gunmetal and silver. I also had a new chrome silver marker which I used to pick out some of the rivets and piping.
There are also a set of nice clear stickers for the decal details, which are mostly a series of red lines and the "78 Ex" and "E.F.G.F." badges. These are well designed to fit flush over panels, although unfortunately the sheet doesn't have any spares.
The kit comes with two open fist parts, which have a unique peg connection rather than the typical ball joint, as well as a trigger hand for the right arm. The lack of a ball joint limits articulation a little, but the wrist can swivel independently, so posing is still doable, including of course the menacing approaching pose from the promotional materials and box art.
In terms of accessories, there's a large shield, which has a simple handle similar to the The Origin RX-78-02 and MSV GM, although there's no additional 3mm peg connection. The back has a gatling gun, with an ammo drum on the backpack and a flexible rubber ammo chain that can flex as you pose the gun.
On the left shoulder, there's a rack of three beam sabers, which swivels forward to dispense them into the suit's hand. There's also the beam rifle, which has a very stripped down design, appearing as just a few tube details attached to a small boxy body and large dish-shaped sensor reminiscent of the sensor from the original RX-78-2 design.
The kit has really impressive articulation. There are no polycaps, so everything is super stiff and secure. The hip joints can rotate downwards to allow the thighs to swing almost all the way forward and back. There's great range of movement at the shoulders as well, and there's a decent amount of waist rotation as well as a cool ab-crunch that reveals hidden mechanical detail under the armor. The skirt armor is designed from the start the move independently, so there's no extra cutting necessary to unlock movement.
Overall I had a great deal of fun with this kit. Panel lining took a really long time as it the kit is saturated with detail, but after completion, the detail really stands out. While I didn't end up enjoying Requiem for Vengeance very much, I'm glad I managed to get this model.

A round-up of this week's aesthetic observations on the Gundam franchise in lieu of writing another (three) long post(s).
My repulsion from the Build series isn't, I think, solely rooted in the weird corporate-ness of the the premise but also the co-opting of visual language intended to convey mortal peril and its usage for weightless fluff. That is to say, the fights always seem to be animated identically to a 'proper' Gundam show, even though Build goes out of its way to remind the viewer this is simulation. It's not like you can't wring drama out of 'harmless' games (*cough* Yu-Gi-Oh! *cough*), just that I don't think 'it's like real Gundam fighting (except it isn't)' is the best way to render an e-sport.
The main problem with the GQuuuuuuX is the utterly atrocious colour-blocking. The design *is* a bit needlessly fiddly but that's only an issue because they've gone so granular with the layout of the deco. No single block dominates, so there's nothing for the eye to catch a hold of and work out from. Compared to something like the Aerial, the G-Self or the Turn A, or even the Wing, where the extra detail and greebles/redesigns are muted by very straightforward blocking, the GQuuuuuuX is constantly at risk of becoming a confused jumble of bits. The fact the thrusters merge so readily with the arms is particularly jarring when trying to keep track of its movement (or just looking at it in static poses, as in the HG kit advertising pictures). Everything smudges and none of the shapes are distinct enough to escape the morass on their own.
This is galling because I quite like the actual structure of the thing. I wonder if it could have been improved by dialling up the contrast on the colours, but I suspect they really just needed to wash out the detail with larger blocks of blue and white. The original scheme works well for a reason.
Also there is a spectrum of Gundam reinvention that goes from 'RX-78 but different' to 'hit the mecha randomiser' and someone should have a go at plotting that graph some day.
#gundam#g-quacks#seriously you have to understand how important it is to block properly#when you haven't gone to the effort of creating a distinct silhouette for each limb#the fight scenes are going to be hell to keep track of#and not in a good way

Title: Cuteness Member - Mark
Today, I'm celebrating my dA friend, "Spider-CatEarthHTF99's" birthday (formerly known him as "MarkTheTreeKitty1998" / "El-Gato-Arania"). I've already make an artwork for him, so I won't shown ya for the next year. 😉 Happy Birthday, dude! 🎊🥳🎂
• Nonetheless, instead, here's my throwback of Mark 🐱 and his AU of enrolling "Cuteness Defender Academy". With his first "Cuteness Mecha Armor" was the same armor as Flat the Mouse [CLICK ME!] (from "My Melody" franchise) albeit a color changed (the "Titans Color" suits him perfectly); the armored "G Mk-II" / "Gundam Mk-II". 🤖🙂
G-Mark Mk-II [Titans Color] Based on: RX-178 Gundam Mk-II [CLICK ME!]
Armament(s):
• Beam Saber he only fixed armament of the suit are two beam sabers for close combat, which, like the ones of the original RX-78-2, were stored in recharge racks on the backpack of the suit when not needed.
• Beam Rifle Since beam rifles were now a common equipment of most mobile suits, the Mk-II was also equipped with one as its main armament. Each rifle had its power rated at 2.6 MW and was powered by a replaceable e-pac, with two spare e-pacs stored in the shield of the suit.
• Clay Bazooka A projectile-firing bazooka, as its name indicates, the clay bazooka was originally designed to fire adhesive rounds which immobilize enemy machines rather than destroying them outright. However, this weapon can fire several different types of ammunition, and it's normally used with conventional explosive shells. Like the hyper bazooka it was clip-fed and capable of carrying seven rounds per clip plus 1 round in its chamber. Again additional clips could be stored on the rear skirt armor storage rack.
• Hyper Bazooka For heavy firepower, the Mk-II could carry a large hyper bazooka, which was clip-fed and capable of carrying seven rounds per clip plus 1 round in its chamber. Additional clips could be stored on the rear skirt armor storage rack.
• Shield As with most other "CMA" suits, the Mk-II carries a single physical shield for defense on its left arm.
Special Equipment & Feature(s):
• Flying Armor The Flying Armor was designed so any "Cuteness Mecha Armors" could lock its feet into place at the top of the rear section. Additionally, two sections at the front contained grips so the "CMA" suit could lock into the Flying Armor with all four limbs if necessary. The surface area of the Flying Armor was enough to cover and protect the entire "CMA" suit during atmospheric entry. There are also hover nozzles on the bottom, allowing it to function as a sub-flight system within the atmosphere.
• FXA-05D G-Defenser The FXA-05D G-Defenser is a fighter craft created to support the Mk-II in battle. and connected to make a Super G Mk-II.

Tactical Data: Regarded as the most versatile of project Symphony, the Starlight Waltz is known for it’s speed, and it’s GN drive Tau. Threat level: PRIME
Report: Thanks to the quick thinking of Dr. Akarui we have come up with a temporary V-fin for the Waltz. That being using the V-fin from a ground type gundam. For many among us they agreed it would do for now. Honestly I’m surprised we even had this big of a argument over something as simple as a V-fin for the Waltz. Then again, as our top engineer Leo Roberts pointed out, the look of the Waltz determines how not only we, but the enemy see the Waltz. One of the most famous mobile suits, the RX-78-2 “Gundam” or “White devil” as some of the Zeonic forces called it wore a very simple singular V-fin design, meanwhile suits such as the Zeta gundam, and even the Nu gundam wore a duel V-fin design. Some believe the duel design makes a suit more intimidating for some reason, other’s don’t see a difference. As for my opinion on the matter I prefer something that could make it clear this is no ordinary mobile suit. Something you’d see and could tell this suit meant business, and it had both the speed and fire power to prove it. Something that would make you think twice about facing this suit head on. In my head the makes me think of a duel V-fin but not in your typical “Small version of the V-fin followed by a big version of it” style. No. If the Waltz is to have a V-fin it needs one that’ll stand out. Something that will make us well known on the battle field. Like the helm of a knight the Waltz’s V-fin needs to be the best it can be. For some of us this is our last chance to actually make a difference, others it’s there last chance to get a big pay check, and for other’s it’s to leave behind a legacy. As for me I made a promise, and I intend on keeping that promise to the bitter end. As far as weapons testing has gone I honestly believe we found the perfect set up for the Waltz. The Starlight Waltz, as designed by doctor Akarui, was designed with two core factors in mind. Speed, and versatility. Yes, the weapons listed above are it’s “Main weapons” but that doesn’t mean you can’t make a load out for it based on say sniping or close quarters combat, or anything in between. X-0027J-G10H. This serial number was given to the Waltz on purpose. “G” in our project has a double meaning. Obviously it stands for “Gundam” but it also stands for “Prototype”. As for the numbers 0027 and 10 the “00″ part is a slight nod to Celestial Bio engineering as all there suits, and I mean ALL of there suits have the number “00″ at the beginning, the “10″ is actually a nod to Dr. Akarui’s birthday October 31st, right on Halloween. As for the “J” and “H” those refer to Jenna Roberts, Leo’s daughter who was born only a few days ago, and Hudson Cray. One of our test pilots who managed to survive the Waltz in it’s early days of development. As for the “27″ that would be me. I was born on the 27th of October. As to why we chose these things to make the serial number of our gundam we wanted it to feel personal. After all this suit IS our last chance to create something that can change the world. We have no guarantee that this project will be a major success. Even if we are now leaps ahead of project Hellfire they can always bound back ahead if even the slightest misstep is made. Which is where the “X” in X-0027J-G10H comes from. In many cultures “X” stands for something. In ours...it’s stands for the unknown variable, and to mark the end of the map. If the Waltz does not impress this could be the end of the road for all of us. With a temporary V-fin and face mask on the Waltz, I look at it with both hope, and fear. I’m hoping to whatever god above the Waltz succeeds.
Personal update: to lighten the mood, the date with Dr. Akarui went well. Even got her first name. Ichika. I won’t lie I giggled a bit at it. For such a smart, and at times rather cold girl to be named Ichika which means “One thousand flowers” it seemed so unfitting, however I think that’s because I only know her from our time working on the Waltz. When she’s in “Work mode” she’s laser focused on the task at hand, so much so she acts like a ice queen so to speak. But while on our date she seemed so warm, so cheerful, a bit sassy maybe, but she was happy, smiling even which, as I’ve heard from her father, Takashi, is something she rarely does anymore. Perhaps this is telling, to some extent, about how work focused she’s become.

Title: Cuteness Member - Flat
Hey, did you know, that I drawn first three Sanrio characters suiting a "Cuteness Mecha Armor"? (BTW: One of which was from a character in the My Melody Anime) Well, I do have on dA art storage, but I declared them as an "Unofficial Cuteness Mecha Member". Except one, who already made its debut, but we'll see them very soon. 🤔
Nonetheless, here's my first every "Official" Sanrio character enrolled the "Cuteness Defender Academy", Flat the mouse 🎵🐭! 😁 And his first two "Cuteness Mecha Armors", the armored "G Mk II" (a.k.a. "Gundam Mk-II"), and the armored "Zeta"! 🤖😁
G Flat Mk-II Based on : RX-178 Gundam Mk-II [CLICK ME!]
Armament(s):
Beam Saber • The only fixed armament of the armor "G Mk-II" are two beam sabers for close combat, which, like the ones of the original RX-78-2, were stored in recharge racks on the backpack of the suit when not needed.
Beam Rifle • Since beam rifles were now a common equipment of most "CMA" suits, the Mk-II was also equipped with one as its main armament. Each rifle had its power rated at 2.6 MW and was powered by a replaceable e-pac, with two spare e-pacs stored in the shield of the suit.
Clay Bazooka • A projectile-firing bazooka, as its name indicates, the clay bazooka was originally designed to fire adhesive rounds which immobilize enemy machines rather than destroying them outright.
Hyper Bazooka • For heavy firepower, the Mk-II could carry a large hyper bazooka, which was clip-fed and capable of carrying seven rounds per clip plus 1 round in its chamber. Additional clips could be stored on the rear skirt armor storage rack.
Shield • As with most other "CMA" suits, the Mk-II carries a single physical shield for defense on its left arm.
Special Equipment & Feature(s):
Flying Armor • The Flying Armor was designed so any "Cuteness Mecha Armors" could lock its feet into place at the top of the rear section.
FXA-05D G-Defenser • The FXA-05D G-Defenser is a fighter craft created to support the Mk-II in battle. and connected to make a Super G Mk-II.
Zeta Flat Based on: MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam [CLICK ME!]
Armament(s):
2-Tube Grenade Launcher • One of the Zeta's more unique weapons is a pair of 2-tube grenade launchers built into the Zeta's forearms. The grenades are moderately powerful self-propelling explosives that can deal significant damage to a "CMA" suit or battleship, but are particularly effective against machines with heavy defenses against beam weapons. Each tube carries two rounds, meaning each grenade launcher carries four grenades, for a total of eight rounds that the armor "Zeta" can use before needing to reload.
Grappling Wire • A Grappling Wire can be use as optional equipment that replaces the explosive warheads on the grenade launchers. It mainly used to immobilized the enemies, very suited to this "CMA" suit.
A.E. BLASH XB-G-35/Du. 105 Beam Saber/Beam Gun • The beam saber is the standard close-combat melee weapon of "CMA" suit descended from the armor "RX-78-2".The pair employed by the Zeta are stored in hip recharge racks, are hand carried in use, and have a power rating of 0.65 MW.
(BOWA) XBR-M87A2 Beam Rifle • The Zeta is often outfitted with a unique (BOWA) XBR-M87A2 Beam Rifle. The XBR-M87A2 beam rifle is larger than most other models employed by other "CMA" suits and is powered by a replaceable e-pac, with a powerful power rating of 5.7 MW. The beam rifle is also capable of emitting a beam saber from its barrel, allowing the Zeta to use it as melee weapon should the situation call for it.
Grenade Launcher Cartridge • When the Zeta needs greater firepower than its (BOWA) XBR-M87A2 Beam Rifle can deliver, it will be equipped with the hyper mega launcher. Looking like a "big brother" version of the beam rifle the hyper mega launcher is appropriately more powerful with a power rating of 8.3 MW. Like the beam rifle the hyper mega launcher is powered by a replaceable e-pac and can double as a large beam saber.
FF-XV-SH-609Z Shield • A standard defensive feature of most "CMA" suits is an arm-mounted shield. Originally a thick piece of extra armor designed to stop physical rounds, shield technology has been forced to adapt to the development of beam weapons by incorporating an anti-beam coating. The anti-beam coating allows shields to block energy beam attacks, however with each hit taken it gets worn down until rendered useless.
Special Equipment & Feature(s):
Bio-Sensor • A technological variant of the Psycommu system developed by Anaheim Electronics. Although its full capabilities are unknown, its primary purpose is to allow a Newtype member to more easily interface with his/her "CMA" suit via mental commands. The bio-sensor could also have a rather surprising side effect when the pilot was mentally and emotionally focused enough (usually when angry or upset) to cause the bio-sensor to amplify the power, speed, and strength of the "CMA" suit for a short period of time.

Lexus ES: 2019 Motor Trend Car of the Year Contender
WE LIKE Rear-seat space, big trunk
WE DON’T LIKE Fussy controls, frustrating touchpad
Cabins this spacious simply don’t exist in sub-$50,000 German luxury sedans. But unfortunately for Lexus loyalists, the new ES’ interior remains as frustrating as other recent models from the brand.
Mark Rechtin described the interior design as “a weird mishmash of swoops and confusing angles,” and Frank Markus likened the control knobs poking out on either side of the instrument cluster to bullhorns.
The toggles for temperature adjustment aren’t as easy to use as knobs, and the deservedly maligned touchpad interface remains harder to control than competitive systems. One bright spot: Apple CarPlay finally appears in a Lexus, facilitating everyday in-car phone, navigation, and audio tasks.
At some point, you’ll stop fiddling with the interior and actually drive. Once you do, the ES 300h hybrid delivers an experience that Kim Reynolds called “a bit soft and fluffy.” The ES attempts to provide exactly what you’d expect from a luxury sedan as long as you don’t push it, though some found the ES’ ride too busy and floaty on poor surfaces. Last-gen ES hybrid owners will find improved end-of-travel brake feel and a cavernous trunk; its 16.7 cubic feet matches that of the V-6 model.
Even on the standard V-6’s new F Sport trim level, the ES never acts as sporty as it looks. When the similarly priced IS isn’t a good fit for those who need a more capacious interior, Lexus’ Avalon-based luxury sedan is ready to step in. Ultimately, however, a bigger trunk and the hybrid’s seriously impressive 44 mpg combined city/highway rating can’t overcome our issues with the interior and suspension.
