A round-up of this week's aesthetic observations on the Gundam franchise in lieu of writing another (three) long post(s).

My repulsion from the Build series isn't, I think, solely rooted in the weird corporate-ness of the the premise but also the co-opting of visual language intended to convey mortal peril and its usage for weightless fluff. That is to say, the fights always seem to be animated identically to a 'proper' Gundam show, even though Build goes out of its way to remind the viewer this is simulation. It's not like you can't wring drama out of 'harmless' games (*cough* Yu-Gi-Oh! *cough*), just that I don't think 'it's like real Gundam fighting (except it isn't)' is the best way to render an e-sport.

The main problem with the GQuuuuuuX is the utterly atrocious colour-blocking. The design *is* a bit needlessly fiddly but that's only an issue because they've gone so granular with the layout of the deco. No single block dominates, so there's nothing for the eye to catch a hold of and work out from. Compared to something like the Aerial, the G-Self or the Turn A, or even the Wing, where the extra detail and greebles/redesigns are muted by very straightforward blocking, the GQuuuuuuX is constantly at risk of becoming a confused jumble of bits. The fact the thrusters merge so readily with the arms is particularly jarring when trying to keep track of its movement (or just looking at it in static poses, as in the HG kit advertising pictures). Everything smudges and none of the shapes are distinct enough to escape the morass on their own.

This is galling because I quite like the actual structure of the thing. I wonder if it could have been improved by dialling up the contrast on the colours, but I suspect they really just needed to wash out the detail with larger blocks of blue and white. The original scheme works well for a reason.

Also there is a spectrum of Gundam reinvention that goes from 'RX-78 but different' to 'hit the mecha randomiser' and someone should have a go at plotting that graph some day.

Hell yeah! I mean it's unfortunate that the gundam looks so bad, but how the gundam looks is not that important really.

it looks good. i'm not really sure what to make of the khara connection. Anno is the second-credited writer on this. that could be good or bad, but in any case he needs to be stopped before he owns a piece of every nostalgic property on earth.

Gundam G-QuuuuuuX Spoilers

My theory is that any new entry for the Gundam franchise needs at least one of these two things to be successful:

A Char

Well, guess what…

We got a Char, but not any Char, but THE Char.

I wonder, is there’s any hope for Machu and Nyaan? Or maybe some minor characters we haven’t met yet? Pls pls pls?????

Now, regarding Char and what little I’ve read about the leaks, this series sorta sounds like Enokido and Anno’s UC Gundam fanfiction. It's not necesarily bad, it has a lot of potential in fact. Of course, not everyone is going to like it, but this is normal with everything that came after Gundam 0079, to be honest. We’ll need to watch it and make our own conclusions.

On the other hand, if the series is popular, then there’s a real possibility that Char becomes the Tumblr sexyman he was always destined to be. Can you imagine? (This could be very funny or very annoying for me. Well, we’ll get there when we get there).

Anyway, if Garma is alive in this continuity and if the showruners aren’t cowards, then they should make Charma canon, it’s just the right thing to do.

Huh.

I don't suppose it's a surprise, but that is actually a reasonably smart way to do a UC AU. It's an obvious pick, of course, as an inflection point, but it's the one with the most chance of making a meaningful difference to the wider-world plot of Gundam 79, which doesn't rest all that heavily on any single person's actions or survival.

Going back to the very start of the story and having Char win the first couple of episodes removes his opportunity to kill Garma and ensures Dozle's survival, both changes that would go a long way to neutralise Gihren's influence on the shape of the war. I am, somewhat despite myself, rather intrigued as to how they're going to develop Challia Bull as an actual character and what part Cameron is going to play, assuming he's more than just a point-at-screen cameo.

That said . . . I can't say my interest is heightened by knowing this is a no-holds-barred UC do-over. The original iteration of Gundam is not one I hold much affection for, when all's said and done, and this feels like an extremely self-indulgent move by the franchise (again, not surprising, just a bit disappointing). Plus nothing here allays my doubts that I, personally, shall get on with the mecha animation in this show. Still looks far too over-crowded and muddy to my eye.

Gundam Gquuuuuux began airing in Japanese theaters today, and it will be coming to the US on February 28th! Still no news on when the serialized anime will begin airing.

Zeonic Scanlations has translated the first half of the movie pamphlet and posted it on his site, along with scans of a bunch of images from said pamphlet (courtesy of GundamPixel), which includes some slick action shots and a ton of character designs/info.
