The Rugby World Cup Table
In France, there is something specific to Rugby we call "la troisième mi-temps" (third half-time), where both winning and losing teams and supporters gather after a game for a bite and a pint! In that spirit, as our home World Cup comes to a close tonight, I am celebrating all the teams that took part and played exciting, enthralling rugby (sometimes breaking our hearts!) all across France this past couple of months, sharing recipes from all the countries represented. I really enjoyed delving into national cuisines I did not know, and perhaps some future travels will be inspired by these delicious discoveries! In the meantime, I'll be happy eating, whether New Zealand or South Africa lifts their fourth Webb Ellis Trophy!
Pool A
Confit Duck (France)
Manuka Honey Glazed Ham (New Zealand)
Melanzane alla Parmigiana (Italy)
Pasta con Salsa Caruso (Uruguay)
Ombidi and Mielie Pap (Namibia)
Pool B
Beer Battered Sausages (Ireland)
Regte Braaibroodjie (South Africa)
Scots Apple Crumble (Scotland)
Ota Ika (Tonga)
Griș cu Lapte (Romania)
Pool C

Sydney to Nice via Dubai
It was great to catch up with some of my fellow travellers at Sydney Airport including those who had been on other Gulliver’s RWC tours with me.
I enjoyed snacks and drinks with Vicki and Paul before boarding the flight.
I had paid to select my seat and as I particularly wanted an aisle seat in a centre four , I ended up in the very back row. However I really lucked out as there were only two of us in the fours seats. According to the crew they were 2 of the only three empty seats on the plane. The back was also exceptionally quiet with very few people coming down to use the amenities.
I was able to watch part of the Australia v India Cricket before the Japan v Argentina then the crucial Portugal v Fiji Rugby. Wow the Portuguese were tremendous and thoroughly deserved their win - a shame it couldn’t have been by a bit more !
The food was excellent and the flight smooth but unfortunately as usual I did not get any sleep.
The stop at Dubai was just over 3 hours which allowed time to not only navigate to our next departure lounge ( a 30 minute walk) but also to catch up with others in the group and enjoy a coffee ( > $12 each!)
The Dubai to Nice flight was only about 25%full so I had 4 seats to myself. It was quite funny during the flight to see many had changed seats and there were sleepers spread out everywhere. It reminded me of a flight Stuart, my mother and I took from Honolulu to Sydney many years ago when the flight crew said to us during the meal service “ you don’t need to sit together there are so many spare seats”
Breakfast was not as good as the previous leg nor lunch, which is not a criticism but more a compliment to the Sydney facilities.
We arrived at the hotel around 3 pm and most of us tried to keep awake. i went for a short walk around the area.
Welcome drinks and canapes was a good way to start the tour as it gave us the opportunity to meet the 'strangers" in our group. Quite an interesting mix. Joyce and I were pleased to catch up with Damien Frawley , a formed Qld Red and Wallaby who had had a couple of seasons playing at SydneyUni .
We have mixed thoughts on which teams we are going to support now. i think for the games we are attending this weekend Fiji for most of us but sunday is divided betwen Wales and Argentina.

Last weekend was a three day affair, thanks to Labor Day. And despite having no plans until Friday evening, it turned out to be relatively busy. And warm!
On Saturday we went to the baseball - predictably (if we had checked the previous two games against the Marlins) the Nationals lost the game, somewhat (un)comfortably, 4-11. Worse still, we picked some seats that I thought would be in the shade but it turned out that was the case only for the first 20 minutes of us sitting down. Fortunately the stadium was mostly empty so we were able to move to an area that was well protected from the sun. (Note to self - do not pick areas 128-134 in future for daytime games - 114-117 would be better). Apart from the result it was a reasonably fun way of spending a couple of hours.
On Sunday we booked a Bottomless Brunch at Ala near Dupont Circle. My initial expectation of unlimited food turned out to be false, but the unlimited "champagne" (or Margaritas/Bloody Mary's) made it pretty good value. Ok, the champers was American, in a screw top bottle and a modest 10% alcohol, but hey, it was a Sunday morning and no-one wants to get overly lashed at that time of day.
Then on Monday, we resurrected The Boy's bicycle (the tyres were very much flat) and went out for a bike ride along the river. I rode a Capital Bike and my wife had the 'real' bike, so we were a bit time-limited in how far we could go, but I suspect she was keen not to go too much further anyway, with the less-than comfortable seat on that device!
Today is the day that the Rugby World Cup starts, so the next couple of months will be full of games to watch, though I suspect that my personal interest (in Wales) will not last too long this time around. According to every podcast I've listened to this week, it will be the best RWC ever. Which I'm pretty sure they would have all said last time...and the time before, etc.

Hi tumblr!
Anyone here who lives or has traveled to Helsinki, Finland? Would like to hear some travel tips! I will be there from 21 October to 10 November (with colleagues). So far, my 'tourist' itinerary is mostly within Helsinki and are after the official business hours (so, museums and parks). Still want to go for a day trip outside the city on weekends.
Any place should I visit? Foods I shouldn't miss? Definitely excited about the moose and reindeer burger!
Edit: the destinations so far.

Steady As We Burn by Pacificwanderer
Rey and Kylo Ren share a Force-bond and it distracts them both as they fight on opposite ends of a galaxy-wide war. Life is strange and attraction adds a layer of complication that neither Rey nor Kylo is comfortable acknowledging.
Still… Sometimes, in the sweet moments between dreams and reality, they meet as the Force tries to bridge the gap between understanding and love.
Snippets of life for two people who can’t be together, but find it impossible to be apart.
Chapter One | Chapter Thirteen
“Is this how you always eat on Naboo? Here I thought you had some manners,” Rey chided. She’d always eaten with her hands and getting used to cutlery had been a bit of an adjustment. It just wasn’t something that was necessary on Jakku and, truth be told, she preferred eating with her hands.
“It’s considered polite to eat this kind of food with your fingers. It’s meant to enhance the intimacy and also the flavors,” Ben explained as Rey gave him a disbelieving look.
“That sounds like something you made up so that you can keep nipping at my fingers,” she replied.
Ben shook his head, his messy locks falling into his eyes as his lips curved. “Here, it’s called shuura,” he said while offering her a piece of the same juicy, yellow fruit that she’d fed him.
Rey ate from his fingers while letting her tongue dip out to tease at his digits as the juice dripped down his hand. He liked that but seemed to be planning something more than what Rey was thinking of doing—which was more of what they’d already done last night.
Later, sweetheart. I’ll let you put those lips where ever you want.
What about now? Rey grumbled.
He was so good at deferring pleasure for himself. Part of her wondered whether he was still punishing himself for the crimes he’d committed by denying his own pleasure. Rey huffed a little as he gently kissed her nose, his lips sticky from the shuura, which earned a laugh from her.
“Moof milker,” she said while scrubbing her nose clean with the back of her hand.
“More?” Ben offered and Rey shook her head.
“I am stuffed. If I eat any more food, I will make myself sick. I’m not built like a conservator, unlike some individuals,” she ribbed.
Ben shrugged and Rey stared openly as his muscles flexed under her gaze. He was doing it on purpose and she loved it.
Chapter Thirteen now on Ao3.

Prologue | Peanut Gallery Convention
( tw: vehicular crashes, food mentions )
Venturing underground leads you to the bustling subway life. Though you and nineteen other souls will be here with the same goal in mind, that doesn’t mean that you’ll be alone down here. People have jobs, people have lives wholly unconnected to yours, and you walk past them, hearing some small snippets of different conversations.
“You really need to stop putting in overtime. Why, you look like you’re about to keel over! You and everyone else—”
“— so many kids in the neighborhood lately. More and more of ‘em each year. I dunno how they plan on fittin’ them into schools…”
“What do you MEAN you think Aki-kun’s the cutest guy idol? If you’re gonna choose someone from Fleur, it’s gotta be Ryota-kun!! He’s got this thing where—”
“—stop letting young people drive. There was that motorcycle crash earlier this year, not to mention all the OTHER crashes—”
Even those that share your future aren’t necessarily here to walk with you the whole way. Unfolding your invitation, it reads the request that everyone be at the Hope’s Peak campus by ten in the evening tonight. So long as you get here before then, what time you choose to make your journey is up to you.
“Stand clear of the closing doors, please,” a clear, enunciated and feminine voice calls out over the intercom.
Everything runs smoothly as you board your train and let it take you to your destination. Of course it would; trains have been the safest and most reliable way to get anywhere in this country and have been for over a decade.
Time passes you by, and an itch of boredom falls over you. For those of you who decide to open up the HPA forum while you wait, you get greeted by commentary of people like you or people hoping to be you.
> NOOOOO HANE-KO RAMEN WILL BE CLOSED IF MAYUMI HANEZUKA ATTENDS how am i supposed to get my doritos ramen now ლ(。-﹏-。 ლ) > More repeat names this year. Isn’t this like the third Kumagae? > lol if we’re calling out that, why not the fourth doigawa in the entire history of hpa jfc > Can we mention the super powerful families that are rolling in this year? man i wish i was rich > someone: how many music talents do you want? HPA: yes > delete this > delete this > delete this > delete this > this guy’s still stuck in the 2010s > hey we only know eighteen people so far with that good luck program announced last month. who’s the last two??? does anyone know???? > please someone reply > someone
...Maybe checking was a bad idea.

!!! I hope it's okay to reblog but I had a post sitting in my drafts about this for 2 years and I have to share even if it's a bit of a mess:
(this is copy-pasted from my drafts but I deleted a detail that I know is from the last trilogy and edited some stuff, I don't think I missed any spoilers but a lot of info was probably from epigraphs and it's hard to know from which book without doing a full reread, I will put this under a readmore just in case)
Some thoughts on Elfbark and the history of its use in Chalsed
First of all, what we know:
- Elfbark blocks the Skill & excessive use is said to kill the Skill ability in a person (also Kestrel mentioned it was also used in the 6D as punishment)
- it is commonly used in Chalsed on slaves
- it seems that people from Chalsed are less likely to understand dragons speaking? (I think that's true but I don't actually remember if we have evidence more than a general vibe, we did see at least one soldier understanding Icefyre and Tintaglia in rwc)
-I'm pretty sure dragons speak using a combination of Skill and Wit, and that they use the Skill to glamor people (unrelated but I also think cats do this too)
- Chalsed had been an enemy of Dragons/Elderlings/Kelsingra in the past, and has also been an enemy of the Six Duchies for a long time ("Sooner or later, there is always war with Chalsed")
- Kelsingra & the 6D were presumably allies in the past too if they existed simultaneously (first Farseer queen was an Elderling*, they have legends about seeking help from the Elderlings, king Wisdom, tapestries, etc) (*I'm not sure were I got this info, I just remember a vague description with the color purple in a song/historical text)
-We saw Verity use the Skill in the Red Ship War to influence the enemy and crush their boats and stuff, and this was one tired Skill user being dosed with elfbark. Imagine the sort of advantage several fully trained coteries would be in a war.
My theory is that Chalsed began to use Elfbark for their army and for their generals in order to protect against the influence of Skill users on them. (for morale, navigation, decision making in general).
They may have also used it because they didn't want to be susceptible to glamor from dragons, if elfbark was in use back then.
And if there is one thing that could potentially offer protection from stone dragons flying overhead and forging you, it would be Elfbark, but I'm not sure about this part.
I think that after the long history of wars between Chalsed and its neighbours, even if the need to use Elfbark was a long time ago, the Skill ability in the population would be very rare and weak, and that's could be why it seems most chalsedians don't understand dragons. (now editing this I think I may be wrong in my initial assumption, we know Burrich is skilled and his grandmother was a freed slave, and Tats didn't have any trouble understanding the dragons from what I remember)
I still wonder what exactly is Elfbark, where do the trees they get it from grow, and how did people know to use it. (Just realized I didn't even mention the Outislanders' version of elfbark in this post so if anyone has anything to add about it that would be great)
Silver/Skill seems to me a bit alien in nature and I have a lot of thoughts on that too (and smth I think I remember from rwc about animals drinking from Silver-contaminated water and Silver spreading up the food chain?) but this is veering off topic so I'm gonna leave now, this is already long 😅
Ahead of them loomed the city walls, and high above it, on a hill within the fortified city, stood the towers and ramparts of the Duke of Chalced’s stronghold. It was more fortress than palace, and as they approached it, Sintara knew a moment of unsettling doubt. This was a bad place, a very bad place, and her inability to summon up the specific memory that told her that only made it appear more ominous. IceFyre had been insistent that the entire city must be completely annihilated.
Ok so what with this and Rapskal telling Chalced was enemy of dragons back in Elderling times and the ehole time being a circle thing I think that maybe not necciserally Chalced as a country had always been hostile to dragons but Something in the place
#am I going to regret reblogging this instead of sending an anon#probably#I hope you don't mind I don't want to be annoying and also I'm nervous about getting things wrong/writing incoherently#that's why it was in my drafts for two years I wanted to reread the books first but I didn't so it just stayed there

Dragon Keeper Question Time:
1. What were your favourite moments?
Erek and Detozi’s letters
The dragons emerging from their cases with Thymara observing from above
Sedric being miserable about having to live on a boat
Thymara meeting Sintara (painful scene but also interesting because it lays the foundations for the rest of their difficult relationship)
Rapskal meeting Heeby and falling for her instantly
Alise at the Rain Wild Traders meeting in Cassarick
Alise standing up to Sedric when he tries to forbid her from going upriver
Sedric taking Relpda’s blood
2. Favourite quotes?
‘My girlhood dreams are dead, and I like the ones I have now better.’
‘Sleep, then,’ Mercor replied quietly. ‘It’s good practice for death.’
Home. He missed it badly. Clean sheets and large airy rooms and well-cooked food and freshly laundered clothes. Was that so much to ask of life? Just that things be clean and pleasant?
‘I just got to build something better for myself. That’s all. What’s past is past. So I’m going to get me a dragon and be best friends with him. We’re going to fly together and hunt together and always, always be friends and never angry at each other. That’s what I want.’
‘She felt silence growing in her. Sometimes it reminded her of a fast-growing ivy; silence covered her and cloaked her, and she suspected that one day she would smother in the silences Hest could create. It was an effort to break through that strangling quiet, but she did it.’
‘All female dragons are queens. Just as female cats are queens.’
‘Why are some people like that?’ She hadn’t expected him to have an answer, but he looked startled, as if she had asked him something of great significance. When he answered, his words came slowly. ‘Maybe because we let them be that way.’
For the first time, he would have money, money that was his, earned solely by his own efforts. Not his father’s money, not his family’s money, not even the inflated wages that Hest paid him for his services. His own money, to spend as he desired. Exactly as he desired. Dreams that had slowly shaped themselves inside his heart for the past four years clamored to be free.
Erek, In my official capacity of Bird Keeper for Trehaug I am relieved to tell you that the exceptionally ugly bird that was vomiting on itself after eating its own droppings has apparently cured itself. There is no danger of the contagion spreading to either of our flocks. Sa’s mercy on us all! Detozi
‘I’m sorry,’ she said, and then wondered at her words. She wasn’t sorry, not at all, and yet she could not keep herself from apologizing. When had it become so ingrained in her to apologize whenever she wanted something for herself?
‘Heeby is going to fly a long time before you ever get your big blue powerful and gracious arse off the ground, Skymaw! She’ll be a real dragon long before you are, queen stick-up-your-bum!’
3. Did the reread change your opinion of the book? In whay way?
I know that The Rain Wilds Chronicles isn’t a fandom favourite (:c), but I’m enjoying rereading it so, so much!! I did find the beginning of Dragon Keeper a bit weaker than what Hobb has accustomed us to (since beginnings are usually her strong point). For example, there’s a whole conversation between Thymara and Tats that is clearly there for exposition purpose only and feels frankly unnatural (why doesn’t he already know about her life if they’re supposed to be friends??)
But apart from these minor things, I still find the premise fascinating, I love Hobb’s descriptions of the Rain Wilds and tree cities, and I find most of her RWC characters just as complex and interesting as her other characters.
Sedric is still my favourite. I find him incredibly relatable, even when I know that we’re supposed to find his concerns ridiculous (I’m sorry but I would also hate to sleep in a narrow and sweaty bunk with people snoring around me). Speaking of which, I’m not a fan of the way Hobb keeps demonising men who like to dress well and smell nice, as if that was a flaw in itself. The double standard is painfully clear in the way Alise and Sedric are presented: a fancy lady VS a shallow dandy.
I’d forgotten how cute and optimistic Rapskal is in this first book, which - given what we know happens later - breaks my heart. I also still don’t give a dragon dung about Leftrin, but that’s just me.
#rote#Realm of the Elderlings#robin hobb#rain wild chronicles#dragon keeper#rote reread#question time#leftrin: this woman looks so sophisticated; I am in love#also leftrin: this man looks so sophisticated; what a loser#I'm saving the tats roasting for the next book

Values
I am SO DAMN TIRED of this Chick-fil-A kerfuffle. I’ve been hearing about it for years and now, because nearly all of my family are intolerable conservatives and half of my friends (including those who are LGBT) have moved to the right, it is currently the only damn thing they’re all talking about.
I swear, if I hear “they bent the knee,” “they caved to the LGBT Nazis,” or “boycott now” one more damn time I swear I’m gonna lose my shit.
I don’t get what the problem is. I really don’t. For a long time, right-wing Christians have praised CFA for their so-called “bravery” in refusing to stop donations to “bible-based” organizations that espouse anti-LGBT policies and practices. Then CFA promised to stop, but they didn’t after all, and that made the RWCs whoop and holler in joy. LGBT groups protested to the point that some cities refused to approve permits for CFA to open stores, including the San Antonio Airport.
Last week, CFA finally announced that they were stopping their current contributions to the remaining groups on that list. Now the RWCs are losing their ever-loving minds, saying that CFA has caved to bullying from the gay left and are now giving money to support “the gay agenda”. Dinesh D’Souza was more honest and just said, “the gays”. At least he has the balls to own his bigotry and say what he really means.
These same people wanna sit there and say they’re not homophobic or transphobic. Like...what? Are you people serious right now?
I’m going to reference Robert Gagnon over at The Federalist, who wrote about recipient Covenant House this way: “Every one of its 16 U.S. and Canadian Covenant House programs has undergone the assessment of Cyndi Lauper’s LGBT-fascist ‘True Colors’ to insure they are fully on board with the entire homosexual and transgender agendas.” His headline and the body of his article clashed - he claimed in the headline that CFA caved before writing at length about the fact that CFA has acetually been giving to LGBT-affirming groups and events for several years. He calls the donations to Covenant House and other similar groups “a sin tax”.
Let’s ignore the fact that the Salvation Army has fires employees for being LGBT and turned away same-sex couples who needed food and shelter. Let’s forget that the Fellowship of Christian Athletes denounces homosexuality in their founding documents. Let’s just wave off the disgusting claims by the Paul Anderson Youth House that homosexuality among boys and men is “exploding” because of abuse in the home and pushes ex-gay groups as an alternative. Then again, RWCs think that’s perfectly acceptable because SIN!
I grew up in Evangelical Christianity. I know what their arguments are, and I know their excuses why, yet I still have to ask: what the hell is your major malfunction? What drives you to deny someone basic needs, a job, or even common decency for being LGBT? How the hell do you think you’re standing for Jesus by persecuting a group that you have determined to be Very, Very Bad™️? You talk about the gay agenda, but I don’t think even *you* know what that means - you’re just a bunch of angry bigots who deny their own fear, yet that fear exhibits itself when you attack a company that decides to make their charitable donations more useful?
Oh, right, I forgot. You have your good Christian values. The Old Testament says that teh gayz should be put to death, and you completely ignore Jesus’ words and actions to push your own narrative, one based entirely upon pride and arrogance. Lemme ask y’all this...when He fed five thousand people with five loaves and two fish, did Jesus ask anyone whether they were prostitutes or tax collectors? When He healed people, did He ask if they got leprosy from their illegitimate lover? No, He didn’t care. He saw human suffering and He helped. He didn’t ask anyone to prove that they were worthy of it.
AND EVERY DAMN ONE OF YOU WEAR WWJD SHIT.
What’s more is that you spit insults at people like me for calling you out on your mess, you support President Man-Child and praise him for his locker-room antics, wear shirts that say “fuck your feelings”, and tell me that I’m angry and you really do care. Horseshit. You are all about your own pride and anger, and you wanna call yourselves “righteous”. You wanna talk about G-d’s judgment. I think you should spend some time reading Matthew 7 and give some serious consideration to your own behavior before you try to fix everyone else.
Don’t you dare sit there and tell me that you advocate freedoms when you’re really about forcing everyone to live the way you think they should. Hypocrite.
