Season 16 Episode 15 Thoughts

What the fuck? WHAT THE FUCK? What was that? To be entirely honest this was an interesting set up for season 17 and it will be nice to see Bloodgultch again (does anyone know what was going on with optimist Church?) BUT am I the only one who thinks that all the actual plot has been dumped right at the end. The majority of the season was given over to whacky adventures that did nothing of consequence, we had some stuff with the 'Gods' that wasn't very memorable, and now, in a 16 minute segment, we've been given everything that was worthwhile in a rushed, cobbled together manor.

Now for episode based story problems. One, the biggest one in my mind, why did they have to save Wash right before he got shot? They had a perfect moment where they could have just grabbed him and locked him the hiding spot where they were waiting. So why didn't they? How is that any better for the timeline than waiting for him to be on the verge of being shot? The answer is it isn't. They were just stalling, which probably would have been fine had they not had past Wash talking to present day Carolina.

Two, why did Donut change his mind? I know the justification given was that he wanted to save his friends (you know the ones he literally just betrayed) but Cronos said they would be spared. He didn't help his friends at all. It was a pointless twist for the lack of pointless twists and an excuse to have an action scene. Oh and while we're talking about the action scene thanks for neglecting and then killing my favourite character RT. I mean he'll probably be back but come on. Let Doc/O'mally be a real character again. Make him a bad guy if you want but let him be there.

As you can probably tell I didn't enjoy this season very much. Which is a real shame because I was very optimistic when we started. I found it mediocre for the most part and I'm full out angry at it right now. Some episodes were pretty good and virtually every episode has had at least a good moment but they far from save it. Hopefully season 17 will take some of the interesting possibilities and do it...you know...properly this time but unfortunately I doubt it. It's possible red vs blue has just run its course and is now just seeing what it can get away with. Even the poor voice actors sound tired. All the same I will likely still come back next year and I still want season 17 to prove me wrong.

That's all this time folks. I'll be seeing you next season where maybe, just maybe Rooster Teeth will save their veteran show from the dumpster fire.

Season 16 Episode 14 Thoughts

I'm back. Still sick but less sleep deprived so let's do this. So Huggins is dead now for...reasons (I don't think her death ultimately made a difference. Unless of course she really was killed for running in the hallway). Let's face it she was probably killed so we could have that speech and the parallel shots with our mains. To be fair it was a nice speech. I will miss Huggins greatly. She was a lot of fun.

The good news is season 16 has finally shown me a plot I can get invested in. It's a real shame that its taken to the second to last episode to get here. This is a multi-season arc so with hope they'll carry this plot point forward and season 17 will be a strong one. I'm down for fucking up time to save our darling Washington. Am I the only one who finds it really weird when he's called David? I'm just so used to his name being Washington. Nobody gets their real names in Red vs Blue.

I do have a question. I might be wrong and it's not really a problem if I'm right, I'm just wondering about it. Sister mentions high school in this episode. Wasn't she 15 when she joined the reds and blues? And didn't she already have a reputation at that point? So was all this screwing and going from 'frigid' to party animal happen in freshman year? It's possible I suppose. I don't know how American high school works let alone future American high school. Maybe I'm completely wrong anyway and she was older when she joined the crew.

One last thing. I love the sing song type voice of destiny. I've always loved that when it comes to mystical creatures. Come on Rooster Teeth. More destiny!

Season 16 Episode 12 Thoughts

So these are AIs not Gods. Okay, I mean I guess that's a little better. Functionally they are still Gods effectively made by a God but sure. That's a tiny bit of sugar with a very, very bitter pill I suppose.

When this episode started I thought we were in for a boring ride. What we got was essentially an exposition dump that even our main characters weren't interested in. However, once the AI Gods were out of the picture this episode did significantly pick up. Wash was the best part of course. We got our traditional speech which has become a staple of red vs blue, we got an enjoyable level of drama, we even got a believable and well handled betrayal out of Donut (I mean honestly the fact that he hasn't turned on them earlier is a morale).

So here's my hope (and I know the YouTube channel Eruptionfang mentioned this a few episodes back so I apologise for stealing his point). I hope this season does a reverse season 15. That season started off strong and then went to shit. This season, while having a solid few opening episodes, took a nosedive pretty early on and is now showing mild signs of improvement. If it can somehow dig itself out of this hole then it might go down as an okay season. I don't think it's ever going to be up there with season 6 or anything but maybe on the hit or miss level of season 14.

Season 16 Episode 12 Thoughts

Woohoo!!! The ships aren't canon but the names sure are. Both Carwash and my own happy ship Grimmons have been acknowledged in the same episode. I suppose the fan community has an odd, lax sort of influence and I love it.

Overall this was a soild episode. Wash's memory slips are still the perfect level of sad and I like that a character as major as Church hasn't just been forgotten about in character interactions (though I swear Rooster Teeth if you make him an important part of this arc I'm going to flip). Jax's interactions are also brilliant. He's so much more enjoyable this season. Psycho Jax for the win.

Another plus point is that the Gods are kind of downplayed in this episode. They're there but for some reason they felt a lot more normal and natural. Perhaps because for the most part they just acted like early red vs blue villains and the fact they that they're Gods (still hate saying that and knowing it's likely canon) is kind of secondary to the whole situation.
