interacting with the finnish karelian community online can be hard when ur one of the ppl who think its not Valid to show up to events with those cheap suojärvi ruutat when ur family is not from that region with an eagle feather in ur hair.
#.txt#like you dont need to have ruutat as fast as possible. its something that needs time n care n understanding#there are karelian craftspeople who can teach you what ruutat you should be wearing based on ur family n region#and some of them can even make them as a commission#and feathers in the hair is just... making it very clear u wish u were native american#bc thats not a thing for us. it doesnt go along with our beliefs abt collecting n keeping things from animals

Disappointed but not surprised. This is Karelian wear, not Finnish.
It is extremely disrespectful to call the headdress that is an important part of the whole of the ruutat "funky" and refusing to even draw it. This is a trend I've seen with finns over and over again calling our cultural wear funky and ugly because it doesn't suit their personal interests. Headdresses, as well as every single other part in Karelian ruutat tell a story of the wearer, the exact place they're from, their age group, their marital status as well as which family they are from.
Following the trend of Finnish cultural appropriation of taking a part of Karelian heritage (that has been marked clearly as Karelian, even recognized here by the poster) and STILL insisting it to be Finnish is such a spit in our face.
There are so many historical dresses found from different areas of actual Finland, yet you still go and choose one clearly labeled as being from the Karelian region. Honestly if you're such a cultural history nerd, do your research better and please, add to your reading list at least a few cultural history books that detail the struggle of Karelians and the erasure of our cultural history.
Finnish Miku, but its the iron age because I'm a cultural history nerd.
The outfit I used as reference is from the later parts of the iron age, perhaps around 1000 AD. Based on archaeological finds in the Karelia region, and this particular reconstruction has been made by Hanna Aalto. I did take some minor artistic flairs and instead of the funky headdress just added some braid decorations.
#the art is lovely but the disrespect runs deep. I need finns to do better about this.#and yes I know BECAUSE of the erasure of our culture and heritage differentiation can be hard#but even op here clearly states the reference is clearly labeled as having been found in the karelian land. you are muddying it even furthe#karelian

Owning my own Ruutat would make me feel so whole!
I've been kinda scared of meeting people from my community, since i'm scared of potential invalidation and abandonment from community. This also cause my family doesn't really take my efforts to recovering my culture and identity.
To me the invalidation by my family makes the doubt is it all worth it, since it feels that they don't really support me going through with the recovery of my family's identity that's most likely forgotten due to possible trauma i don't know yet about (if not the events of evacuation itself). I'd like to feel that they'd be somewhat proud of me for even trying.
I know where we left and why, but not really else. Was our name changed? What Karelian we spoke? Is there something Karelian i haven't yet noticed in my family?
I have so many questions yet so little answers and it's hard in an environment who doesn't really understand my cause and what i need.
What could help would be information and education fellow Karelians and once get my garb that fits me and who i am. I'd like my ancestors to feel they're not forgotten and that their family still walks in their footsteps for the better.
I hope i'd hear from some of ya on how to potentially progress!

The Finnish national dress group is a source of endless amusement when it comes to the Karelian catalogue. Without a fail, someone gets a Karelian dress, and doesn't know how the weird parts are supposed to be worn. Person: How is this supposed to work? Person2: I'm Karelian! You wear it like this, attach it here, Person: No thanks I don't like your IDEA Person3: I'm not Karelian but I've always worn it like this *attaches a photo of some hilariously wrong way of wearing the thing* Person: I like your IDEA a lot better, I think I'll go with this one! Meanwhile, I assume, the Karelian dies a little bit inside. XD Whatever though, national dresses are not ruutat or even folk wear, IMO if someone wants to look funny in their dress just... let them.

i think something finns in particular dont understand abt why its wrong for them to wear ruutat or ‘karelian kansallispuku’ is that these clothes have very specific meaning to us, they tell stories of your family and your village and they can differ greatly depending on those factors. theyre not just clothes, theyre holy, and you need to live in the culture to understand any of it.
and yet, they can easily just piece together an ugly as hell ‘kansallispuku’ with no understanding of those meanings n their history, get praised for it by other finns, while actual karelians wearing ruutat will get mean stares and called ethnic slurs for it by the same mfs, possibly risking getting physically assaulted even.
and the thing is, this stuff is a very basic part of understanding cultural appropriation, and yet these gold standard nonwhite allies dont even Know abt it.

im tired of remaining silent abt it... the karelian kansallispuvut that finns wear are ugly as sin. like putting aside all of the racism n cultural appropriation for a second, making n wearing those party city versions of ruutat should count as a hate crime in of itself.

[ID: light-colored text on a dark background saying:
"Are Karelians indigenous?
yes. karelians are viewed as indigenous in russia and by most other indigenous ppls. we experience anti-indigenous racism and our history shares a lot of similarities w other indigenous ppls in terms of oppression. we also relate to other indigenous ppls thru traditions and worldviews.
Are Karelians poc?
not inherently. most karelians arent poc, but there are karelians who are poc. note that karelians are also generally not considered white by white supremacists in places like finland and russia, but we definitely still benefit from white privilege in many ways. being visibly karelian (such as by wearing ruutat or speaking karelian) will get you treated like shit no matter what, though. ultimately whether or not a karelian individual considers themselves white is a personal choice, but i consider myself n other karelians nonwhite due to our oppression as indigenous ppls and as said before, how white supremacists in and near our home do not consider us white. this is a topic that has likely as many opinions as there are ppl discussing it, so its something im fine with agreeing to disagree on generally.
its also important to remember that karelians have suffered multiple attempts of ethnic cleansing from both finland and russia, so while traits like darker skin and monolids are not as common anymore they still can crop up in karelians with white looking biological parents. saying this bc brown karelians often get accused of not being really karelian or being adopted for having those traits.
lastly, a poc whos been adopted into a karelian family is just as karelian as someone with karelian blood. this is normal and traditional for us." End ID]
i don't want to be ignorant, i'm just curious, how are Karelian people indigenous? i don't want to offend you with the question, it's just that when reading about Finnish history you see them integrating Karelian culture, identity and folklore so hard into it, it's difficult to me as an outsider to draw the line.
from my FAQ (link)
also like... how is finns stealing our shit bc they see us as primitive subhumans n thus closer to "Real Ancient Finnish Culture" a point against us being indigenous or different from finns? the finnish national identity as we know it now started to build in the late 1800s during the rise of finnish nationalism, in which they started looking into karelian and sámi cultures for inspo for their Official Finnish Cultural Identity bc they thought their own culture wasnt exotic n interesting enough. meanwhile karelians have been mentioned by name in texts from as far back as the 400s. finns only see karelians n our culture as finnish whenever it benefits them, but they had no issues trying to prove to the nazis that karelians were the real subhuman race and not them via graverobbing and skull measuring, or putting us into concentration camps run by mannerheim to 'purify' finland from the races that are too filthy for finland.
